Dear Friends, Merry Christmas!
ones. We lived in Scotland, and as romantic as that may sound, we felt terribly lonely and homesick. We lived in one room, had no Christmas decorations, no family closeby, few friends who would be in town, and so little money we planned not to have even a small tree. But I remember that Christmas as one of the best of my life! What a surprise that was! Sometimes the “different” Christmases are the best. This is my prayer for each of you this year.
Christmas this year is “different.” Humming Wishing you and yours the Christmas carols Hope, Love, Joy and Peace! instead of singing to shake the rafters is going to be different. A Dr. John church that is “socially distanced” on Christmas Eve is going to be different. Fewer Christmas parties this year is going to be different. Family members who can’t join us because of safety concerns is going to be different. But I’m guessing most of us have had “different” Christmases before. The first Christmas Elizabeth and I were married was one of those “different”

The Characters of Christmas 12.6 The Stump Of Jesse Isaiah 11:1-10 We sometimes hear about “the stump of Jesse” in prophecies and Christmas Carols. A stump doesn’t sound interesting or glorious, and certainly not “Christmasy.” In fact, it sounds like something ugly that ought to be dug up and disposed of. I suppose that image actually describes a lot of us before Jesus redeemed us! And now, we are filled with glory! 12.13. The Angels. Luke 2:1-20 and Nativity Angels are beautiful messengers from God. Today, we will celebrate the ministry of angels. We will also have the children’s Christmas pageant at the 9:45 and 11:00 services. 12.20. The Lessons and Carols At both services, we will have the Lessons and Carols. At 9:45 it will have a contemporary flair with music arranged by Andrew Sanchez. 12.24. The Manger (4:00 and 6:00) We will have two worship services, one at 4:00 in the NLC, and one at 6:00 in the sanctuary. Both will be live-streamed. This year, we cannot predict how many people will attend in person, so there will be seating in the NLC as well as in the sanctuary at 6:00; the service will be live streamed from the sanctuary into the NLC. This will ensure plenty of social distance and a beautiful worship experience for everyone. 12.27. The Shepherds Luke 2:1-20 Shepherds were rather ambiguous characters in Bible times. The good ones were a model of loving care. The bad ones were a model of low character. Either way, they tended to be very poor and socially marginalized. Don’t you love it that God chooses the poor and marginalized to have front row seats at the greatest event in human history? He is so good!

A Note from Stewardship When we started talking in October about planning our giving for 2021 it seemed a little early, didn’t it? And yet here we are in December, getting ready to begin the New Year at Haymount Church in joy, hope, and faith! Thank you for all your faithful planned giving for 2021. As of this writing, we have 171 households who have returned an Estimate of Giving card, and the estimated gifts total is $1,069,001. If you have turned in a card, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. You have been a light shining onto the path of the New Year ahead. If you have not been able to turn one in yet, perhaps you can be one of the heroes who helps us make it over the line to our goal! HUMC Records In looking through the list of Haymount members, I noticed a lot of adult children are still listed with their parents. Church Finance Greetings, I’m sure that most of us are doing a good bit of reflecting about 2020 as December is here, winter has come and we long for time with our families and friends. It has been the most unusual of years, I would say. We have been separated by distance out of necessity in compliance with “social distancing” and the fears and anxieties we experience due to the coronavirus. We have not been separated in thought, nor prayer, nor the opportunities to share via telephone or Zoom. Our Haymount family has participated in all of those. We have endeavored to be as ‘close’ as we can be through whatever means we could. THANK YOU. Through the faithfulness and gifts of our congregation, we have maintained our facilities, provided for our designated missions (and others), paid our apportionments and each loan payment due. We have provided opportunities for children, youth and adults to worship in a variety of ways. Bible studies and other classes have been great inspiration for many. Our organ will soon return, refurbished and “itching” for Monica to sit on that bench and lift our spirits once again with beautiful sounds. The organ will come with the Festival Trumpets added to the balcony to enhance our worship through music. We have assisted our Pre School program. We were fortunate to receive a PPP Grant through the Cares Act of 2020, which, in part, allowed all our staff to continue working all year. I am certain that many of you have done exceptional deeds of kindness through your Sunday School classes, small groups, and personally. We know this has been a year of uncertainty and stress for so many and are so appreciative of the steadfastness of our Haymount family. (Continued on the following page)

Church Finance Continued Thanks to the diligent and efficient work of our Trustees, the YAC was sold in record time. The Finance Committee and Church Council have voted unanimously to apply $460,000 of those sale proceeds to our loan balance. We currently are preparing our budget for 2021 and are grateful to our Stewardship committee and all who assisted in that effort. Today, it is too soon to tell exactly what that budget will look like but progress is good and the Finance committee pledges to always seek God’s guidance and leading in decisions that will be made. Our goal is to ‘underwrite’ the budget 100%, providing for the identified needs and requests from our staff and work/mission areas. Thank you for your commitments and dedication to HUMC. We will continue to update as to current financials in the bulletins and E updates. Again, thank you ALL for all you do to for Christ’s Kingdom in and through Haymount United Methodist Church Have a blessed Christmas as we rejoice in the birth of the One who makes all things possible. Facilities Update by. Rev. Donald M. Warren There is a lot of exciting progress being made around the Haymount campus. Work continues on the new festival trumpet en chamade addition to our organ! The back of the balcony is being prepared for the installation of an organ bellows and electronic control module for the new trumpet division. The control cables will be run beneath the sanctuary subfloor from the organ console in the chancel all the way to the back of the balcony. In the front of the sanctuary, the carpet has been removed and the hardwood flooring is being prepared for refinishing. The acoustics in the chancel area are already greatly improved for the choir. Listen to the anthems on Sundays and see if you can hear the difference. When the organ console returns, it will be installed on a new raised platform that has been installed by Al Miller and some of our United Methodist Men, and we thank all of them for taking care of this project for the church! Outside of the building, you will begin to see changes as our new landscaping company begins in December. NC Design Concepts, owned and operated by Fayetteville native Patrick McLaurin, will begin to re-shape our landscaping. Patrick is a graduate of Fayetteville Academy and also NC State University, with a degree in landscape design. He was part of the team that installed the shrubbery in front of the Fellowship Hall a few years ago. We look forward to seeing the churchyard looking even more beautiful when spring rolls around! As we begin to slowly re-open parts of the church, ionic air purification is being added to more of our HVAC systems. These emitters inject a stream of positive and negative ions into the air as it circulates through the blower. When the ions come in contact with viruses, bacteria or mold, they remove the hydrogen molecules – without them, the pathogens have no source of energy and will die. This adds another layer of protection on top of our sanitizing equipment to keep the rooms safer while they are in use. We now have ionic purification in the sanctuary, the fellowship hall, the administrative offices, and the main seating area in the New Life Center.
Traditional Music Update - A Note from Monica Dear Haymount UMC Family, We have wonderful things happening in Music & Worship Arts in December. We look forward to the the Children’s Nativity and Handbells in worship on December 13th, sharing in “Lessons and Carols” on December 20th, and celebrating Jesus’ birth on Christmas Eve. Everyone gets to sing at Christmas! This year watch for HUMC’s first Virtual Christmas Carols. Videos will be accepted until Friday, December 4th, so there is still time to submit your video. Information is found at https://bit.ly/32JzMJw I want to take a moment and share my favorite carol with you - O Come, All Ye Faithful. For many years, it was assumed the carol was an anonymous Latin hymn; however, current scholarship finds the hymn was composed by John Francis Wade around 1743. Fleeing the Jacobite rebellion, Wade was a Catholic refugee that settled in France. Seeking a way to support his family, he taught music and trained as a copyist of musical scores. At age 32, he produced a copy of Adeste Fidelis, Laeti trumphantes. When he died at the age of 75, he was remembered for his “beautiful manuscripts.” Slowly, Catholics returned to England. One hundred years later, Rev. Frederick Oakeley, an Anglican minister translated Wade’s hymn as “Ye Faithful, Approach Ye.” Unfortunately, the carol did not catch on. In 1845, Oakeley came up with a different translation, “O Come, All Ye Faithful, Joyful and Triumphant!” Oakeley shared the hymn with his congregation, and it soon spread throughout the community. 9:45am Worship Update - A Note from Andrew First, I want to thank our volunteers in the New Life Center for their assistance in the 9:45am service. This includes everyone in the praise band, the audio and visual team, and the greeters. Your offering of your time and talents does not go unnoticed and is hugely appreciated. Each of you adds so much to the flow and success of the worship service. Second, if you are not a part of the wonderful volunteers that help make the service so glorious and are wondering how to be more involved in the Church, I want to encourage you to pray and ask God for guidance in this. Scripture tells us that God has given each of us unique gifts and we are to use these gifts to glorify Him. Being a part of a team feels good and it feels even better when your team is God-centered and God-minded. Maybe you are a people person. Try being a greeter one Sunday morning and watch how God uses your gift of hospitality and kindness to welcome God’s people into His higher courts of worship. Maybe you enjoy making music as a singer or instrumentalist. As a musician in the praise band, we are called to lift God’s people into His throne room. God has given us the wonderful opportunity to bring the lost and the broken into His presence. He has given us the keys to the throne room and the responsibility of throwing open the doors so that His people may flood into His gates with thanksgiving and praise. Maybe you are someone who likes to help but does not want to be on stage or in the spotlight. Being a part of the audio and visual team is exactly that. The production of the service, whether it is running sound or making computer slides or being behind the camera or light board, is the backbone of the worship experience. Without great sound, creative slides, and good lighting, the service cannot be as successful as it can be with those things. If you are tech savvy, this is the ministry for you. Your God-given creative mind will flourish and help benefit your Sunday morning worship experience while also giving you a creative outlet to thrive in. We are God’s Church. God gives us these gifts so that we may enjoy life while also glorifying Him. Confirmation Sunday Confirmation Sunday was Celebrated on November 29th. Eight amazing young people were confirmed by faith into membership of this congregation - what a joyous and momentous occasion! Pictures will be published in the January newsletter so that you can see who these gifts of God are and you can congratulate them. Please pray over them as they continue their journey of faith, that God may protect them and that they continue to allow God to guide and direct them. We also want to thank Diane Helfrich who gave selflessly to these adolescents, teaching them, loving them, shaping them. The best part is, Diane never lets these young people go out of her life. Bibles for Our Third Graders On November 22nd our church celebrated Bible Sunday, a day set aside each year when this congregation gives our Third Graders their very own Bible. We do this for the Third Graders because this is when most children have achieved the independent reader level and have grown in their reading comprehension. The children received a personally inscribed Bible specially designed for either a girl or boy, taking each of them, while they read, into devotional times that speak specifically to where they are in their lives. The children also received a booklet that explains how the Bible came to be and how very special it is. Please be in prayer for these beautiful children God has given this congregation to love and nurture, and their parents, as they continue to guide them into a deep love relationship with our God. December Happenings Outdoor Mid-Week Play Time for kids K-5th Grades - Wednesdays, 4:30-5:30 underneath the Great Magnolia. Temperatures will be taken and COVID questions asked. Preschool Update “It takes a village to raise a child.” Truer words have never been spoken. Haymount UMC is our village, and our preschool is our “child.” Together, we can have a positive impact on every child who walks through our doors, and in turn, have a positive impact on our community. Haymount UMC Preschool has been learning in person since August 17. To say we are facing challenges during this pandemic is an understatement. Several teachers did not return this year because they had to stay home with their children who are learning virtually. Our enrollment dropped significantly, and we had to close two classrooms. Lower enrollment means fewer dollars coming in, so we tightened our belt. New protocols in place mean teachers are working hard and doing things they never imagined. Parents, children, and staff are learning new ways of teaching, learning, and communicating. Due to positive COVID-19 cases, we have had to quarantine two classes at two different times. Thank you for being our village and supporting the preschool during this difficult time. We are very aware that the church is facing difficulties too. People (big and small) are hurting, scared, confused and anxious. We have been called to serve them. As your preschool, we pledge to do our part. We ask for your prayers as we navigate the uncertainty of the coming days, and in turn, we commit to pray for you.
Youth Update This past month we have gradually been able to meet inside as a youth group, something we have been looking forward to for so long. It has been wonderful having the chance to get back to a bit of normal in our new normal. In November, we gathered in the New Life Center for Pilgrimage. We were reminded of our identity in Christ and as people of the church. For three of the four sessions we were able to join in worship, prayer, fun, and mission. I want to say thank you to all those who were able to make this weekend possible! From helping with sound, providing snacks, good conversations, and more, we couldn’t have done this without you! Youth Update This month, we will have our Youth Christmas party. Dress up as your favorite Christmas movie character or in your pajamas as we watch The Grinch together and enjoy some cookies and Christmas treats. We’ll also have a White Elephant gift exchange, with a $10 maximum! Come celebrate the season on December 20th in the New Life Center from 5:30-7:00! Angel Tree: Thank You! It has been an honor to be the Angel Tree Coordinator over the past 5 years. I always look forward to talking with the caregivers of the children whose parent or parents are in prison. Angel Tree is a great way to share the love of Jesus with these families, especially for those with feelings of hopelessness. Angel Tree can spark the hope that Jesus’ love brings into each of our lives, and each year I am humbled and proud of our Haymount congregation. Not only did you select an Angel and take time to decide on a special gift for each child, but each year you go beyond what is expected, and I and the families appreciate this with overwhelming gratitude. Thanks to you, Haymount angels, nearly 90 children will have a brighter Christmas this year! May God bless each of you during this Season of Hope, Jackie Kubinski

A Christmas to Remember Haymount’s annual tradition of A Christmas to Remember is the way we honor the Christ child with a birthday gift! It is a gift that delights our Lord because it is a gift that demonstrates our love for others. John 15:12 tells us, "My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you." Jesus loves us in such an extraordinary, incredible way. It is up to us to take the love we receive from Him and find ways to bring that love and goodwill into our world. This year’s recipients are Fayetteville Urban Ministry and a well project in Rwanda, which is a special project of a Methodist University student. We hope that you will join us as we bless both ministries beyond our regular giving to Haymount UMC. Checks (memo: Christmas to Remember) can be put in the offering plate, mailed in, or brought to the church anytime between now and December 30th. You can designate one of the recipients by adding that name in the memo line. Thank you!
Update: Ocracoke Work Teams Our third work team has returned after another good week of repairing homes, including the Methodist parsonage, on Ocracoke Island. Crew Chief Al Miller led this team which also included members of Hay Street UMC. Al's goal is to finish up repairs from 2019's Hurricane Dorian by December 31st. Thank you, Haymount work team members! If you have carpentry, electrical, and/or plumbing skills and are able to spend 3-5 days working on Ocracoke between now and the end of the year, please email Dr. Elizabeth: drelizabethtyson@haymount.com. Your Stephen Ministers Continue to Serve Faithfully You hear it in the news and everywhere people talk, the COVID stress is real. And what, you ask, is our church doing to help people in this trying time? Your Stephen Ministers are actively ministering to those who reach out for help - those who lost loved ones to suicide, those who are aging and feel especially lonely, those who are struggling with employment, those who have strained relationships with family and friends, etc. Please keep your Stephen Ministers in prayer as they become the tangible, compassionate love of our Lord Jesus Christ to those who are hurting, and pray for those who need courage to carry on. Children's Christmas Eve Service Designed for Families with Young Children, but everyone is invited! In the New Life Center Each year Haymount UMC offers a shortened worship experience for families with children that is interactive and visually stimulating. It does include Silent Night by candle light, but the children receive a flameless candle that they can keep. One particularly unique element of this service is that we ask all the children to bring a gift for Baby Jesus - a baby item that will be laid in the manger during the offering time. These baby items will be donated to The Methodist Home for Children teen parent ministry, as we remember that Mary was a teen parent herself. No Communion will be served this year given the COVID restrictions. If you have questions about this worship service, feel free to contact Dorothy in the church office.
