From the Pastor Continued In September, I will teach a class on Wednesday evenings centered on James Bryan Smith's book The Good and Beautiful God: Falling in Love with the God Jesus Knows. The broader church is blessed by his careful presentation of following Jesus as an apprentice. An apprentice learns the habits of a mentor, and our mentor is Jesus. Over the course of nine or ten weeks, we will adopt the Jesus story, engage in soul exercises, participate in community, and be led by the Holy Spirit. This relatively simple process is the core of walking with Jesus and will shape my teaching ministry with you over the coming years. We will read from The Good and Beautiful Life, The Good and Beautiful Community, and The Good and Beautiful You. I appreciate Jim's emphasis on three transcendentals in classical thought: the good (ethics), the true (theology), and the beautiful (aesthetics). Jim's in-laws are Pinehurst UMC members, and I hope he will be able to come and lead a weekend retreat with us sometime in the coming year. In the meantime, I am trying to learn names, adopt the Haymount rhythm of ministry, and live as a follower of Jesus. Our family thanks you for allowing us to join with the saints and sinners of Haymount in seeking the welfare and prosperity of Fayetteville and Cumberland County. Pardon me if this note is a little brief ... I still have a train to catch!

Thank you Haymount ! Finance (and subsequently Church Council) approved Trustees’ request to allocate $118,356 from Cape Fear Avenue Property sale proceeds to a much needed designated fund for Repairs and Maintenance. Our facilities and equipment are aging. Thanks to the Trustees for their diligence in monitoring and efforts to be prepared for upcoming repairs and replacements! There are also designated funds for HVACs and NLC Chillers. Please contact the Finance Office if you are interested or have questions. Reminder: Numerous opportunities for honorariums, memorials, and/or "just be cause I love HUMC" are available through our designated funds and endow ments. Haymount Endowment Program in Action "Supporting Our Church Now and Forever" It’s time for our Fall cycle endowment fund disbursements! The Endowment Disbursement Application forms are due in the Finance Office by August 15. Our committee is excited to remind the church of these funding opportunities from the following Endowment Funds: *Senior Adult Ministries Fund – for a comprehensive older adult ministry at HUMC. Ministry components include – spiritual, enrichment, nutrition, intergenerational, outreach, recreation and service. *Mary Evelyn Cross Hayes Fund for HUMC - for United Methodist Women programs, children and youth programs and the sanctuary flower fund. Thanks to everyone for being so supportive of this Endowment Program! Our committee is so appreciative that the number of our endowment funds is growing, and this growth so benefits our church and its many programs. Wednesday Evening Fellowship WEF will be held September 7-November 16, 2022. The September newsletter will have more information, including menus for your planning. We look forward to sharing fellowship with you when fall schedules resume. It takes 10 people per week to make it all happen, but it’s a fun way to meet new people and serve your church!

CRESP We know it’s early to think about BACK TO SCHOOL but please keep Cumberland Road Elementary in mind as you see back to school sales! “Share with God’s people who are in need.” Romans 12:13 Haymount began a partnership with Cumberland Road Elementary (CRESP) in 2013, that began with the idea of helping children in need! Since that time, our volunteers have made a difference in the lives of so many children! Whatever your gifts, there are several ways that you can be a vital part of this ministry! • Volunteer one hour each week in the classroom mentoring children K-5th grade. You can be a lunch buddy, reading buddy, classroom volunteer, make copies, help with special celebrations, etc. They are excited to welcome much needed volunteers back into the school next year and will work with your schedule! • Volunteer after school with one of the various clubs… Garden Club, Beautification Program, Boys to Men Program, Uniquely Me for Girls and Comic Book Club • Donate School Supplies- July 1- August 31 o Drop off school supplies in boxes located outside of the Sanctuary or Church office. A Look Ahead Wednesday Evening Fellowship (WEF) is Kicking Off on September 7th! Here is a layout of all the exciting WEF activities 5:15-6:15 - Meal served in the New Life Center 6:15-7:15 Classes and activities for all ages: Adults Rev. Allen Bingham will teach from the book, The Good and the Beautiful Life, by James Bryan Smith. (12 weeks) Cost of book: $14. Please pre-register. Rick Daniel, Becoming a Contagious Christian, by Bill Hybels. (6 weeks). Cost of book TBD. Please pre-register for the course. Youth Bible study and group activities in Room 227 Children For infants-pre-K in Room 217 - child care/Jesus' Friends w/crafts and activities For elementary-aged students in Room 208 - KidMo To register for these classes, please email office@haymountumc.com or call the church office - 910-484-0181. Do you want to make a difference in the life of a child? Then consider teaching children's Sunday School! The commitment is once a month or as often as you wish. The curriculum is provided. For Parents - A Look Ahead as you plan for the 2022-2023 Year: Sunday, August 28th @ 4pm - Blessing of the Backpacks and dinner. Kids and Youth bring their backpacks for a blessing and prayers for a Christ-centered school year. Sunday mornings, 10am Sunday School for all ages; 11am Kids Worship for 4s-3rd Graders Sunday evenings, 5:30-7pm LIGHT for Ks-5th Graders. This is a kids group that fosters Christian fellowship and learning how to live as a disciple of Jesus Christ. Meals are provided Wednesday evenings, 6:15-7:15 KidMo for Ks-5th Graders. This is an interactive learning of biblical truths through the telling of Bible stories. Other events will be posted as they are planned. Haymount United Women in Faith No, that is not a misprint!!! In March it was announced the UNITED METHODIST WOMEN (UMW) would have a new name - UNITED WOMEN in FAITH (UWF). During the 150+ years in mission, the organization has had more than 25 names reflecting the ways of the times. Perhaps the thought is that as we are facing a change in the United Methodist Church, perhaps it is time to change our name. We will maintain United Methodist Women as our legal name for now and remain the official women’s organization of The United Methodist Church. “ We remain the organization training women for leadership, growing spiritually, transforming through education and providing opportunities for service and advocacy. We remain women in mission who follow God’s call for our time.” (Yvette Moore) The new logo features the new name – UNITED WOMEN in FAITH – next to a Christian cross in muted yellow, blue, orange, and green. The traditional structures – circles, units, districts, conferences – remain the same. HUWF circles begin meeting in September – (Circle 2 meets September 9 at noon in the Commons Room, Circle 3 meets September 12 at 1:30 p.m. in the Commons Room, Circle 6 meets September 12 at 6:30 p.m., place TBD) We will sell desserts at WEF September 7, October 5, and November 16. We will sell desserts November 5 at the UMM Barbecue. If you can provide a dessert, contact JoAnn Stanford. Continue to give your pledge and make checks payable to UMW as before. Those at-large members can send checks to me or leave them at the church with Nicole. If you would like to join a circle or have questions, please contact me, JoAnn Stanford, president. The Appalachia Service Project The HUMC Youth recently returned from a service trip in Elizabethton, Tennessee. During their trip they stayed in Hunter, TN and traveled daily to Elizabethton to assist families in need of home repairs. They installed door frames, completed bathroom repairs and began individual home renovation work. Check out some of the pictures from their trip!

Haymount UMC Vacation Bible School 2022 God Provides for His People Through His Animals For an intense but wonderful week at VBS, God's children learned that God created animals to provide for his people. They learned about Heifer International, the ministry that sends animals to provide sustainability to communities in underdeveloped areas all around the world, even in the USA. They learned that alpacas and sheep provide wool, chickens provide eggs, but also insect control and fertilizer. Cows and goats provide milk, but also fertilizers, and bunny rabbits, dogs, and cats provide unconditional love and help calm us down. They also learned about the Bible stories of Elijah and the Raven, Balaam and His Donkey, The Money in the Fish, and how God is Our Shepherd. A huge, huge shoutout to our amazing leaders for VBS - it takes a whole community to raise our children, and the HUMC church family came through. Judy Norris, Patty Driggers, and Melissa Blanding led the Opening Gathering, with Drew Ellis on AV. Bible stories were told by ladies from our Grandmother's Group: Brenda Booth, JoBeth Johnson, Lynda Clark, and Kim Hurley. The Activity Station leaders were Brenda Booth, Tricia Everett, Laurie Doherty, Gerry Croll, Edward Tellez, Diane Davis, Pat Trujillo, and Monique Moguirre. Our fearless group leaders were Katherine Pugh, Mary Rowlette, Tristan Ross, Libby Daniel, and Tricia Brookover. The stage artwork was done by Kim, Nathan, and Noah Feldmeyer. Thank you!! And then our youth, we could not have made it without our amazing youth: Elizabeth Brookover, Kaleigh Schneider, Nathan Fugitt, Samuel Pate, Charlotte Shepherd, Noah Rowlette, Samuel Davis, Myra Davis, Cruz Parese, Angelina Cartrett, and Abby Cartrett. For our mission focus, Heifer International, the children raised just over $1000. The children were encouraged to do chores and earn the money they donated. These funds will allow Heifer to send several animals into communities to allow our God to provide for his people in these remote areas all around the world. Glory be to God for his blessings on our children and our leaders as we all grow into more faithful disciples of our Lord Jesus Christ. -Dorothy Funkhouser

KidServe 2022 - VBS On-the-Go KidServe 2022, the VBS on-the-go for kids who have completed 4th and 5th Grades God Provides for His People Through His Animals The older elementary-aged children spent the VBS week learning about Heifer, International, and how even kids can make a difference for the Kingdom of God in Fayetteville, NC. The destinations for the group of kids were a fish farm, where the children learned of the value of fish for sustainability in a community; gleaning corn - 647 ears of corn!!! - that were delivered to Veggies for Vets; and the Cumberland County Animal Shelter, where the children delivered the mountain of pet food that was collected from the Haymount UMC family. Thank you, church family, for supporting our mission! A huge shoutout to Lisa Courter, who co-led KidServe. Thank you, Lisa!!
