August Sermon Series - Sticking with God in Tough Times Following the familiar and exciting story of Joseph, we will explore the ways God wove his good plan for Joseph through his Father’s love, his brothers’ jealousy, his slave master’s abuse, and his own spiritual giftedness. As Joseph stayed true to who he was, and as he stuck close to the Lord during one misfortune after another, God blessed Joseph and used him in a mighty way. If you have ever wondered whether God can use your brokenness and pain to create something beautiful, join us for worship online or in the cloister this August. 2 Storybook Family? Genesis 37:1-11 Few people have a perfect childhood. Joseph’s mother died when he was young, and his Father doted on him. His step-brothers loathed him. A storybook family? I guess it depends on what kind of story… 9 Betrayed! Genesis 37:12-35 Most of us have experienced betrayal from someone we loved and trusted. Young Joseph was the indulged son of a wealthy family, until his step-brothers sold him as a slave, telling his father Joseph was killed by a wild animal. How do you heal from that? 16 When Justice Oversleeps Genesis 39:1-23 In an ideal world, Justice always triumphs. In the real world, Justice is sometimes elusive. How does a Christian deal with that? 23 A Life Line Genesis 40 Joseph lives through the betrayal of his family, and a miscarriage of justice resulting in imprisonment. Yet, he maintains his life-line of faith in God. It is through this life-line that he not only survives but flourishes. In Jesus, you too can have this life-line of strength. 30 God’s Plan Revealed Genesis 45:1-11 Did God cause Joseph’s brothers to betray him? No, but God worked a miracle through their evil. Did God cause Potiphar’s wife to falsely accuse Joseph of rape? No, but God worked a miracle through her evil. Our miracle-working God is able to bring good out of evil and victory out of defeat. Sometimes, we can only see this in retrospect.

Our laity is the best, engaged in many activities, for continuing to “stay in touch” and assisting each other. Our wonderful staff is working diligently to maintain operations within the church and connectivity with all of us. The Organ Refurbishment with the Trumpet pipes (Trompette de Gabriel) continues to be on target for completion in November, as are the plans for our 75th Anniversary Celebration. Introducing Dr. Monica Sparzak Dr. Monica Sparzak is a native of Dunn, NC. She is a graduate of the University of Michigan with a Doctor of Musical Arts in Organ Performance: Liturgical, and Church. She holds a Master of Sacred Music from Emory University and Bachelor of Music from Salem College. She has given organ recitals throughout the United States, and she has served churches in the Midwest and Southeast. In addition to her love of organ and choral music, she enjoys handbells. She was a bass and battery ringer with the Detroit Handbell Ensemble. Dr. Sparzak is Instructor of Organ at Methodist University. She is an active member of the Fayetteville-Sandhills Chapter of the American Guild of Organists. She lives in Eastover, North Carolina with her husband Paul, and two children, Matthew and Liam.

Ocracoke Work Teams Haymount is planning to send two work teams to Ocracoke, on the Outer Banks - September 13-18 and October 11-16. The Methodist Church (under the direction of Al Miller) is working with 20 homes whose families have not been able to move back in. 8-10 of those homes are in various stages of repair, and we will be working on some of those homes. We plan to leave after church on Sunday, driving the church van and one other car. We will work full days Monday - Thursday, returning on Friday. We will stay in housing provided on the island, take care of preparing our own breakfast and dinner, and getting some kind of carry-out for lunch. Construction tools and materials will be provided. Dismantling Racism: Starting the Conversation Dr. Elizabeth Tyson will be hosting a 4 week Zoom study of Jim Wallis' New York Times bestselling book, America's Original Sin: Racism, White Privilege, and the Bridge to a New America. Jim Wallis is the founder of Sojourners, a magazine and a movement dedicated to help Christians put their faith into action for social justice. This book is on the NCCUMC's list of recommended resources for dismantling racism, and both Cokesbury and Amazon are selling the book for about $13 (with free shipping!). The study will be held on Wednesdays @ 6pm: August 5, 12, 19 and September 2. We will discuss chapters 1-3 on August 5th. Don't cry’.” I'd rather have them say, ‘Go ahead and cry. I'm here to be with you.’” - Mr. Rogers Often when the struggles of life come, we bottle our emotions and tuck them away. Here, Mr. Rogers reminds us of processing those emotions and sharing with a trusted friend. Perhaps God is leading you to be such a friend. Stephen Ministry will be offering a new training opportunity this Fall. YAC for Sale The Church Council has authorized the Trustees to put the YAC (Youth Activities Center) on the market. The building, located at 1900 Fort Bragg Road, was vacated by NC Conference Disaster Relief in July. The YAC sits on 1.2 acres, zoned for residential use. The building, originally built as the Church of the Nazarene features a gymnasium, a full kitchen, bathrooms equipped with showers, and rooms suitable for use as offices, meeting rooms, and storage. The gym itself is 7,600 square feet, and the classroom/office portion of the building is an additional 5,600 square feet, for a total of 13,700 square feet of space. It was originally acquired by Haymount UMC in 2002. At one time, the building housed the youth ministry and the contemporary service, but the New Life Center has better fulfilled both of those needs. Questions or interested parties may be directed to the Trustees or Peter Stewart.
For Sale! The Christ UMC building on Raeford Road. is being sold. The sale is expected to close in December. We are going to be holding a "garage" sale with all the items remaining in the building. Money from the sale will go into the Christ Church endowment, which is to be used to support Haymount ministries, particularly those for youth and children. We will not be taking on additional items for the Christ UMC sale, however, as soon as we enter phase 3, we will begin receiving items at church for the next garage sale at Haymount. Help is needed for both sales. The Christ UMC sale will be held in Christ UMC, with items left in the rooms where they have been used. We need to price them in place. We started pricing on July 20th, working for a few hours at a time, two or three days a week. The sale is planned for mid August, and may last a few days. Help is also needed with pricing for the Haymount UMC garage sale and with being present during both of the sales. If you are interested in helping out, please let me know.
