PONTOON WATERSCAPE

The project focuses on the study of the typology of ferry piers. They do not only behave as an infrastructure, a transportation node but also a portal to connect people from land to sea. While piers tend to be fixed in place and result in hard thresholds, I experiment in intervening in an underutilized pier in Hong Kong - Tsuen Wan Pier to expand its use and make the structure more welcoming to the water with the use of pontoon modules.

The proposed units would be in four variations 2 dedicated for creating stepped conditions and 2 dedicated for creating flat surfaces within the unit.

diversify the characteristics of each unit hence creating more variations and possibilities to take place, allowing people to enjoy the pontoon spaces with different approaches.

The units are pre-divided into grids to form standardized areas which allow additional modules to be placed upon. The vertical displacement of each step is 50 centimeters as it is intended to make every step space not only for people to walk up and down but also as spaces for people to sit. In other words, the basic form of the pontoon units is aimed to encourage people to walk and rest in any spot within the unit.

The main idea of the add-on structures is to introduce more levels and heights to the units and to enrich the spatial content within the unit. The components of the add-on structures should be able to adapt to different activities (ie. sitting and dining at a table). They should also be able to re-oriented or flip over to create new uses based on contrasting volumes and voids.

The introduction of pontoon variations creates a framework to form a landscape. The introduction of add-on structures to the units helps to further 3

YEAR 2022 INSTRUCTOR Katy Barkan

The project takes a stance on how detached bungalow court units are spread evenly on the site while floating on different levels to leave up voids on the ground to infill public programs and activities within the site. The circulation connecting to the units is the key to determining the partitions to divide units within the massing as well as demarcating public zones on the ground. The units are elevated under a clockwise sequence where housing units are situated on the ground, in mid-air, and on the site’s top level. Stepped staircases are cut through the units to serve as both circulation and physical dividers to separate public and private realms when the project is seen in elevation views. Since units are lifted, the public circulation is allowed to spread in the center part of the site. Community rooms are placed at the turning points of the private circulations to create exclusive nodes just for residents.

PARTING CHAMBERS

The design project begins with exploring daily objects that suggest the keyword ‘openings/ containers’. Documentation and observation of other objects from other classmates as a collective work inspired my development of composite drawings which can be interpreted as plans, sections, and master plans. The chosen site is Kong Toei, Bangkok, which is a canal that lies beside a local temple for worshiping and holding funerals. As the canal is the only direct pathway

13

walking towards the main river and allows people to scatter cremains, the canal becomes the location for designing a columbarium which aims to enhance the walking experience as well as the environment for both the deceased and the living one.

- PARTING CHAMBERS -

Each ‘chamber’ is integrated with different kinds of openings to interplay with the form that is suggested from the composite drawings. One of the formal linkages with the traditional Thai Buddhist architecture and the design is the form of STUPA, which is a large structure that stores cremains of people with high social status or wealth. I would like to imitate its form and integrate it with the characteristics found in bottle openings to introduce light and shadow

15

and respect the traditional form of architecture. In terms of circulation, ‘chambers’ are connected with a walkway that stretches through from land to the banyan tree in the middle. While they are scattered around different parts of the canal, visitors have to walk back and forth to complete the entire funeral rituals to create a cycle with overlapping routes. This also attempts to symbolize REINCARNATION, rebirth as Buddhist teaching suggests that death is

not the end of a person’s life but also a new beginning to start, without dead-end. Through the walking experience, visitors can have time to contemplate their lives and memories of the passed one.

SANTA MONICA - AUGMENTED MICRO URBAN NARRATIVES BIKE CENTER A regional-level bike center to cater growing needs for biking and related services in accordance with Santa Monica Bike Action Plan

YOGA & PHYSICAL THERAPY CENTER Individual consultation rooms and yoga rooms scattered and stalked to provide privacy and thresholds to isolate from the hustle and bustle world and contemplate.

YEAR 2023 INSTRUCTOR Yara Feghali

The collaborative project aims to create a game which visualizes architectural narratives based on a street block in Santa Monica. The development of the block varies and results different urban landscape depending on the choices you make in the game. In some of the narratives, or “multiverses”, my predictions would be a bike center which caters the future development of Santa Monica’s bike development plan; a physiotherapy center which consists of multiple yoga rooms, meditation rooms and medical spaces to address the physical and mental wellbeing of residents, based on trends in the foreseeable futures.

The project investigates the possibility to infill new programs and transform its original function - fast food restaurant - into a food distribution center that also helps contributes to the people in need for both food and shelter.

COLLABORATOR Ezalden Alleheibat Peilin Cao

Taking the advantage of the existing layout and equipment from the restaurant, minimal interior renovation is needed and the existing parking area is replaced with a modular building system to configure transitional housing units and activity rooms for the residents. The function of courtyard space within the building blocks changes according to the time of the day to cater different groups of users who dominate the venue for dining, education and social gathering.

The graphic design project aims to consolidate fragmented bus route information and service operated by two major bus agencies: Kowloon Motor Bus (KMB) and Long Win Bus (LWB) serving Tuen Mun District in Hong Kong. The map style references Hong Kong Mass Transit Railway (MTR) system map to help users familiarize the purpose of the map as a part of public transit system and visual identity for Hong Kong. The colors of bus routes are categorized by the regions of destinations eg. green for Kowloon Peninsula, purple for Hong Kong Island etc. The saturation of such specific colors also indicate the service pattern of corresponding bus routes.

Unlike route maps for railway service, bus networks are more flexible in terms of routing since bus fleets are not limited by specific tracks or passages, but a large variety of road networks that increases the complexity of visual demonstration when multiple bus routes traveling the same highway or main road.
