Cherokee County Park Project:

Throughout my internship at Lose Design, me and one fellow landscape intern were in charge of redesigning a future park project located in Cherokee County. There was a previous concept we based our final design off of. Our main goal was to produce renderings for the county to visually see the site in 3D through programs like SketchUp & Enscape.. We were able to do smaller work related to other projects, but our main focus over the summer internship was producing this project.

SITE ANALYSIS

OBJECTIVE:

This partner-based project is focused on redesigning the award-winning Atlanta Dairies site. The site was a former dairy processing plant that was redesigned into a mix-use community area. They used many features from the original plant, like crushed concrete and reusing the loading dock. The site is mainly planted with native plants and features an open lawn with a small stage for events.

OBJECTIVE:

These two designs are two different approaches in developing our final design. We both decided what sections of the site its’ vegetation be dedicated to. My partner took the approach of color coding the site while I rendered what the plants will look like from planview. We took both our designs in consideration for the final rendering and perspectives.

OBJECTIVE:

The class was given a blank residential site to graphically design a lush and functional landscape. I was able to put in any features we wanted, along with deciding on a broad plant selection.

R E N D E R I N G S:

I was Responsible for developing rendered perspectives in any style we like. Perspectives focus on the backyard of the residence. Master plan was also rendered and shaded. The final design is quite simple with lots of plant screening and water features. There are also multiple patios with plenty of seating.

OBJECTIVE:

The site given to the class sits outside of Athens Downtown located along the North Oconee River. It was originally a storage unit facility, and we were to imagine it being a Historic House that we were to redesign to draw more attraction. The surrounding site was to later be designed into a park for a future project, so I kept that in mind in the connectivity through this site.

The site is packed with amenities for visitors and even features an outdoor kitchen and picnic area. There is a courtyard with a fountain, and a vegetable garden for future volunteer opportunities. There also needed to be some parking and open space in case of any larger event. The result was fantastic, but it was more pleasing to later develop this into a larger park site.

PROJECT OBJECTIVE:

In this project I was given a large site outside of Downtown Athens located near the infamous Weaver D’s. The objective of this project was to turn this barely used space into a functional and programmed park for residents nearby. Another goal was to later connect this to the more urban part of Athens in a later urban focused community. The park was also to connect to the Athens Greenway to bring in further residents as well.

OBJECTIVE:

Understanding the slope and different elements affecting the site was my first priority in my design process. Also deciding what existing was going to stay was another important step.

DESIGN:

The design approach I took for this park is focused on reflecting the environment that surrounds the park. The Oconee River runs along the site, so I included curvy walkways with playful boulders in between to mimic the river. I designed a large amphitheater that mimics Red Rocks Theater in Arizona where there is a massive slope towards the river. There are many more amenities like the courts, playground, and viewing spot of the river. All these elements finally tie back up to Weaver D’s which can feed visitors with some local delicious foods.

E X P A N S I O N

This project was an extension of the previous park design as it sits right across the street and a little closer to downtown. The site was originally occupied mainly by parking lots and a couple apartment complexes. The infamous church steeple where R.E.M had their first concert sat on the site as well. The goal was to design a more functional urban space that extended from downtown that could build revenue and attract people to reside near the area.

The design features a mix between residential and commercial spaces. I added more sought-after urban spaces that could bring more life to the site. There is a restaurant space added, along with a courtyard and commercial center surrounding the R.E.M steeple. These and more features will draw visitors of Athens Downtown further away from the main hub, while still giving them that authentic Downtown Athens feeling.
