St. Joe's Commencement 2024

Letter from the Student Body President

We have arrived at a day that has, for so long, felt like a far-off fantasy. Here we are, Class of 2024 college graduates at our Commencement ceremony!

I need not remind you that our class was met with an unprecedented start to our college experience — greeting one another for the first time on Zoom or behind face masks, yelling out our name, major and hometown for classroom introductions and constantly worrying over the threat of a two-week quarantine. We managed to overcome the challenges and not only succeeded through our first year of college but reinvigorated the campus as we grew through our four years.

The covid-19 pandemic will always be a defining aspect of our college career, but it is only one part of our collegiate story. There are endless other chapters which

outweigh the hardships: Latenight walks through campus for cheesesteaks at Larry’s. Gaining mentors in our classes, clubs and organizations. Becoming a mentor for others. Interactions with beloved professors. Service projects, immersion opportunities, internships, offor on-campus jobs, maybe even studying abroad. Historic mergers, and for some, the adoption of a new campus and collegiate identity.

Throughout all of this, our university has been the center of our universe for four years, and our community here has become a second family. We leave St. Joe’s a better place than we found it — with a larger, more diverse, active and mission-oriented student body than the one to which we arrived. We are forever marked by the Jesuit education we received here. For each of you, my fellow Hawks, I hope that St. Joe’s

Seniors of

Being Editor in Chief of The Hawk has been one of the greatest privileges of my life. Not only did I have the opportunity to lead one of the greatest groups of students, but I also was able to write stories that mattered to both myself and the St. Joe’s community. Thank you to everyone who supported me, and for giving me the space to tell stories that were waiting to be told. I wouldn’t be here without any of you. I wish all future members of The Hawk the best of luck — never stop writing.

Savannah Warner Assistant News Editor

While I was only here for a year, joining the Hawk staff (shout out to Dr. Spinner) is something I will always be grateful for. Not only did this experience help me grow as a writer and editor, but it also brought me new friendships with some of the best, most hardworking people I have ever met. I’m so glad to have been able to work alongside our amazing staff and see the impact of our efforts on campus. And although the Monday night productions were long, I will cherish and miss the fun we had during them.

Being a part of The Hawk has been one of the best parts of my college experience. Before joining the paper last year, I had sworn off journalism forever, claiming dramatically that I would never write for a paper again. I’m so glad I was proven wrong. I’ve gained a love for writing, a minor in journalism, and amazing friends that I never would have met if not for The Hawk. Working with everyone on the paper each week is an experience that I’ll treasure forever, and I’m so grateful I got the opportunity to do so.

I’m extremely grateful for the opportunity I’ve had working at The Hawk since joining my sophomore year, thanks to Dr. Spinner. Through my time as news reporter and website manager, I’ve learned so much about reporting, the communities I’ve worked with, writing, digital journalism, and discovered my passion for storytelling. I will forever appreciate the memories I’ve made, thank you to Dr. Spinner, Dr. Bhayroo, Allie, and everybody on The Hawk Staff!

After randomly registering for News Reporting in Spring 2022 during my first semester here at St. Joe’s, I would have never expected journalism to become so important to me. As a transfer student, joining The Hawk turned out to be one of the most fulfilling experiences of my college career, and I am incredibly grateful to not only Dr. Spinner for encouraging me to join, but also all the people I have met since then. I am so thankful to have been a part of this community and for the stories I have been able to put out!

The Hawk Newspaper May 2024

The Hawk

Sophomore year of high school, I sat in my English class finishing up a creative writing assignment and after hitting submit, I knew writing was something that would turn into a passion for me. The Hawk has provided me the opportunity to continue this writing journey all while allowing me to foster relationships not only within my staff but within the St. Joe’s community and beyond. As features editor, I have had the privilege to explore creative outlets, share the stories of so many talented individuals and groups, and learn greater life skills that will forever stay with me.

Tess

Having the opportunity to expand my horizons and combine my love of sports with my love of editing and writing has been the most rewarding experience. Getting to meet so many amazing individuals and work closely alongside them has been one of the biggest highlights throughout my four years on Hawk Hill. The Hawk is truly a special group of talented writers and editors that are incredible at what they do, but even more importantly the best human beings.

Joining the Hawk this year has allowed for me to grow some skills outside of my major. Being a business major, sometimes it is hard for students to come across opportunities to sharpen these skills. I have been able to establish a writing portfolio, learn InDesign, network, and even share some good music with readers in the process. The abilities that I have obtained have been able to help me diversify my professional skillset, as I hope to use them in my future endeavors.

As an English student and a creative writer, my time at The Hawk has been absolutely amazing. My position as a proofreader not only sharpened my critical and editorial skills, but it also gave me the chance to be part of a team where I knew I was making a difference. I couldn’t have for a more enriching and rewarding experience, and I look forward to applying the wonderful things I learned in all my future endeavors.

While I wasn’t part of the Hawk full time or even a long time, it was an enlightening experience to have. It allowed me to strengthen my skills and experience things I never would’ve without it. It allowed me to interact with so many great people, and while I’m leaving the experience I had is something I will always take with me.

“I would say that my favorite memory is when we beat Temple. I believe that was my junior year. Temple has always been such a challenging team for us with their skill, their speed and everything. We always try to make adjustments to counter their fast attack, and we fnally were able to do that last year. It was an awesome feeling, and we celebrated after, with all the girls, because we worked hard to make those adjustments to beat them.”

Club Soccer

“My favorite memory was defnitely senior night. It was really nice being appreciated and everything. The team made signs and they didn’t tell us that it was senior night, so it was a surprise. They all made signs for us, they got us gift cards and they all signed letters. It was really sweet and it was in the middle of the game, and they contacted our parents so all of our parents were there.”

“This year my co-rec team made it to, and ended up winning in, the City 6 which was super fun just getting to play with my friends and win it all. There’s not much better than that, right?”

Intramural Basketball

May 2024 e Hawk Newspaper 22

“We were playing another senior team, and softball games are quick. They only last for 20 minutes. We were the last game of the day, so we decided to play twice as long. We were all having a good time. My team ended up losing, but it was fun being able to hang out with some of the guys, get to know some more people and just have a good time playing sports.”

“We ended up going into the women’s bathroom and hyping ourselves up as we played our music. Every year we have a song we dance to, and for our senior year it was ‘Honey, I’m Good.’ Everyone was tapping their foot to it, getting hype and in the mood and locking in, which I will say is the best part.”

Cheerleading

“Last year at our ECAC [Eastern College Athletic Conference] meet, we had a really good group of girls come for the meet. We all hung out and had a good time before the meet in the hotel, settling nerves and playing card games to have one good last meet because that was the last meet of the year.”
