The story of the class of 2021 is a turbulent but persistent one, bookended by tragedy but filled with hope in between. Our first year, we lost a friend to everyone in Mark Dombroski. Our senior year was shadowed by a pandemic that caused immense loss for the entire world. At The Hawk, we have been chronicling that persistence, that tragedy and hope, for these past four years. This edition serves as an ending for some of us but simply a chapter in a longer history for the university.

It’s odd to think that the red envelope we received four years ago has now turned into a diploma, a certification of what we were able to accomplish in what felt like a blink of an eye. The following pages are an effort to capture that blink of an eye, an effort to recognize what makes St. Joe’s so special. We may have eaten a Hawk Wrap, heard “walk sign is on to cross City Avenue” and pushed open the heavy glass doors of the library prepared to face the brunt of hours studying for the last times.

But what will endure, what has endured even during a pandemic and a last year we could never imagine, is the relationships that came from that life-changing decision to call St. Joe’s home. Those relationships will persevere beyond 54th Street and City Avenue. We may be moving on from Hawk Hill, but Hawk Hill will always be home. —Ryan Mulligan ’21 Editor in Chief, The Hawk

Letter From the Edition Editor: Welcome to the 2021 Commencement Edition of The Hawk, and congratulations to the class of 2021. In this special edition of The Hawk, we wanted to highlight the best of times during the past four years while also acknowledging the hardships. We cannot ignore the effects of the 2020 pandemic or the racial injustice that finally led to demonstrations all over the world last year, including here on Hawk Hill. Members of our community have struggled in various ways at various moments these

past four years, and some are no longer with us. Yet, in those times of darkness were sparks of light that we wanted to spread throughout this edition. It was important that we shine a light on our triumphs as well as our struggles. There are stories here of students adapting to overcome a year of isolation, advocating for social justice, both on and off campus, leaving the nest to explore the world abroad and excelling in their college athletic careers. The focus of reporting in this issue was to capture this important journey,

to amplify diverse voices and to end the academic year on a note of hope. We wanted to showcase the essence of what it means to be a Hawk— compassionate, ethical and determined in our convictions. We hope when you read this issue you will be as proud as we are to tell your stories. There is proof in these pages that we at St. Joe’s are resilient and that The Hawk—truly —Will Never Die. —Domenica Pillo ’23 Editor in Chief, Hawk Commencement Edition

Seniors of

The Hawk Newspaper

Nick Karpinski Managing Editor I started working at The Hawk during my first semester at St. Joe’s. I never wrote a single piece of journalism prior to joining. Since then, it’s incredibly rewarding to think about the various reporting journeys I’ve been a part of. Whether it’s traveling the world to cover stories in South Africa or covering stories right here in Philadelphia, I’ve learned to love and appreciate the intersection of social justice and storytelling. I’ll never forget the lessons I’ve learned and I’ll always value the connections and friendships I’ve gained. Carly Calhoun Copy Editor Being a part of The Hawk is something that has defined my time at St. Joe’s. From South Africa to Hawk Hill, I have found my passion for reporting on important issues and people, and I’ve met some of the most amazing friends that made long nights in the newsroom more than worth it. Riley Frain Sports Editor Hey Jackie, unfortunately I didn’t really have any time to put one together with my finals schedule the past few days but I appreciate you asking! I'm sorry.

May 22, 2021

Jackie Collins Senior Editor I started working for The Hawk as a foreign correspondent during the South Africa study abroad program in summer 2019. I did not have experience in journalism writing prior to the trip, but I threw myself headfirst into this foreign craft in a foreign country. I always tell people that learning on the fly was the best way to do it, but I wouldn’t have been able to be so fearless if it weren’t for the welcoming and supportive environment that The Hawk staff and advisors fostered for me. Cara Smith Copy Chief I am immensely grateful for my time at The Hawk. I discovered my passion, met my best friends and advocated for the community I love all within the walls of our newsroom. My fellow journalists have taught me the most valuable lessons which I will carry with me forever. And the biggest thanks to our outstanding advisors, whose endless support allows all of us to succeed.

Ryan Mulligan Editor in Chief With The Hawk I was able to see the power that storytelling can have on a community. Through the incredible people I met, the indescribable experiences I had and the caffeine filled hours in Simpson Hall, I grew to learn the importance of telling stories that matter. From the beaches of Durban, South Africa to press row at Hagan Arena, my college experience was shaped by my time on The Hawk and the people I spent it with.

Jaylen Dotson Film Critic Back in 2019, I was in a very dark place. I was questioning all of my choices and had even contemplated taking my own life in a moment of desperation. Then, Dr. Spinner offered me the chance to write the Cine Hawk column where I could review the latest films and give my recommendations. It turned out to be the best thing that could have happened at the time, giving me an important outlet to express my ideas about a medium of art that I love so much. Working with my editors helped me grow so much as a writer and cannot thank Giana, Jackie, Celia, and the rest of the gang enough. To everyone at the Hawk, thank you and good luck in life! Elaina Wall Assistant Features Editor Working for The Hawk has given me a real sense of community, which I definitely needed during the pandemic. I am grateful for the opportunity to work with some of the most talented people who’ve helped me grow as a writer and a person. I’ll never forget my time with The Hawk, and I will carry the skills and lessons I’ve learned throughout this experience with me for the rest of my life. Sam Jenkins Social Media Manager Working with The Hawk for the past year has positively affected my college experience more than I could ever have imagined. I’ve been able to get to know so many hardworking, passionate students and have learned so much from the stories they reported on. My time with The Hawk taught me lessons I will carry throughout my life and career, and I am so grateful for the opportunity I was given to work with and learn from The Hawk.

May 22, 2021

Christine DiSanti Assistant News Editor I’m so lucky to have been able to work for The Hawk this past year! Even remotely, I’ve had the opportunity to work with so many great people and interact with so many members of the SJU community I might not have otherwise. I still remember picking up The Hawk my freshman year, and I’m so grateful to say I was a part of the staff! Nenagh Sheehan Assistant Features Editor Working for The Hawk has been such a great and educational experience. It really brought me out of my shell and helped me connect with various people within the Saint Joe’s community. The Hawk has also helped improve my writing and journalism skills that I will take with me in my future career. I will never forget how rewarding it was to pick up the paper and see my name on it. I am very thankful I was given this opportunity. Celia Hegarty Copy Editor Joining The Hawk gave me a community that I didn’t know I needed during the pandemic. Being part of The Hawk not only allowed me to discover new passions, but it introduced me to some of the kindest and hardest working people I’ve ever met. People are what make an organization special and the people I’ve met through The Hawk are definitely that. Even though my time on staff was short, I’m grateful to have been a part of such an amazing community.

Study abroad for St. Joe’s students has been on hold since spring 2020, when semesters were cut short because of the coronavirus pandemic. But some members of the class of 2021 were able to travel before the world changed. Here’s what they remember.

Prague,

The thought of spending all my time in one pl ace in my ev eryday week was not something I could commit to be cause I could n’t decide where I wanted to go . Mary Sheehan - Guard, Women’s Basketball “I’m the type of person that I woke up every single day during these four years just excited for what that day was going to bring, whether it was a practice or a game, travel day or even just a day off hanging out with my teammates. That’s what’s really special for me.”

Sofia Filippo - Midfielder/Defender, Women’s Soccer “My sophomore year, it was our last home game, and we played Fordham to get into the semifinals. We beat them 2-0 and something about that year, in that season, and that group of people was so special to me. There was this feeling in the air that we were going to make it all the way. Even though we didn’t, it was just this feeling of hope that I’ll always remember.”

Shannon Mulgrew - Coxswain, Women’s Rowing “Our coach took one boat to the Head of the Charles [Regatta], so you had to compete out of the whole team for five spots to go and I got one of those spots. And so we went up to Boston. We went up there and raced and we came in third, which is incredible. COVID hit, so that was really our last race.”

Molly Kapala - Infielder, Softball “Our semifinal game in 2019 at the Atlantic 10 tournament and we were playing George Washington. It was a back-and-forth game the whole way and we ended up losing 12-11, but it was great because every single person contributed. It was top to bottom the best effort you’ve ever seen.”

Amanda Nava - Women’s Tennis “My favorite memory as a member of the tennis team was competing together and beating Drexel. It was a great feeling to see our hard work and determination fall into place.”

Dave Bryant - Short Sprinter, Men’s Track and Field “Breaking the school record at Penn relays for the sprint medley. It distinctly stands out to me because we weren’t sure that we were going to be in the Championship of America heat. Watching guys like Dave Henderson go 46 [seconds] and Steve Thompson go 1:49, being able to be a part of that was really great for me.” TEXT: RILEY FRAIN ’21 DESIGN : RACHEL KWOK ’22

Goldman Sachs “The student athlete experience has really molded me into the person I am today, just given the fact that the coaching staff has instilled such a strong work ethic in all their players. Utilizing the knowledge and experience that our coaching staff has given us has really propelled me and put me in the position to succeed in the workforce.”

Defender David Grana - Men’s soccer

Sidney Kimmel Medical College, Jefferson University “On my team, we have kids from Germany, Australia, Africa, different parts of the United States. Being able to have all these different cultures, all these different backgrounds, while gelling together and working together, that’s been really awesome and that’s going to translate into not only medical school but beyond that.”

Middle Distance Abby Silva - Women’s Track and Field

Salus University “I’ve saidForward to a lot of people that I don’t think I would be going Senior Jordan Olenginski - Field Hockey to physician assistant school right out of college had I not spent so much time on this team. It really taught me to go after what I want to do, to take initiative and to be confident in myself.”

Forward Jordan Olenginski - Field Hockey

Drexel University College of Medicine “I am confident the skills I’ve acquired and the lessons I’ve learned through field hockey will make me an impactful physician. I have learned how to communicate effectively with a team and how to step up to be a leader, even when it’s sometimes uncomfortable. I have learned how to deal with adversity and focus my energy on things I can control.”

Club Sports “When we eventually found out that we officially wouldn’t be having a season, most of us assumed that we wouldn’t. It was definitely disappointing though. It’s fun to stay in a hotel for a weekend and hang out and order Domino’s.”

“We still had fun. We would still do fun games that are stress-free. But we were all disappointed that we couldn’t play any real games against other schools.”

“My favorite memory was when we won the regional tournament in Virginia. We had a really good senior class and young pitching, and it made for a really fun experience.”

“I’ve been playing soccer since I was four, so it’s weird not to have that as a part of my routine.”

“I’ve made my best friends in this club sport. I never played rugby before college, and I just tried it at SJU. A lot of us bonded over having fun and learning about rugby.”

“Coming into college, you want to have that group of friends that will help you adjust to college. Club baseball gave me a group of guys that I can count on.”

“I didn’t know most of the guys going into my start at SJU, and now I talk to the boys pretty much every day. It was a great group of guys, so I’ll definitely miss the kids on the team the most.”
