TAKING OFF ON A NEW FLIGHT H

ello, Mountlake Terrace! My name is Benjamin Eyman, and I am one of the co-editors-in-chief for the 2018-2019 school year. Along with my partner, Annika Prom, we have lots of plans for this upcoming school year. But, before we start next year, we have this school year to finish.

We have had a lot happen this year and over the past week, and this caused me to think.

First, we must address the elephant in the room – the scare that Benjamin Eyman occurred on Thursday, June 7 shook CO-EDITOR-IN-CHIEF many of us to the core. As a school and as a community, we must come together and support one another in this difficult time, especially as the news of others who suffered the same abhorrent situation – or worse – fill the news. We must help each other heal. Most importantly, we must say thank you to the people that have helped us grow and learn over our years here that will

be leaving us soon. These seniors greeted us as LINK Leaders, friends and mentors alike as we were first coming to grips with the realities of high school.

I know that we, the editors and staff of the Hawkeye wouldn’t be the same – or as good as journalists – if we hadn’t had the support of the editors and staff that have since graduated that taught us and helped us improve our skills. And I am sure that the positive influence of the seniors is not limited to here within the confines of the Hawkeye.

Every club needs leadership, and the seniors, with their maturity and experience, helped provide us. They brought us all together, despite our disagreements – and we all have them.

We all have our differences, we all take different classes, we have different friends and we have different lifestyles. But we all have one thing in common: we are all Hawks. As we finish out the next few weeks and continue on in our lives, let’s not forget that we’re all in this together, we all attend this school, we all will graduate together, and we’ll fly together, from this year, into the next one, and beyond. H

Mission Statement The Hawkeye’s mission is to provide the MTHS community with quality, thought-provoking student produced publications. In policy and in practice since 1960, the Hawkeye is a designated open forum publication.

Unsigned editorials represent the opinion of the Hawkeye Editorial Board. Views printed herein are meant to be opinionated and do not necessarily represent the opinions of the Hawkeye staff, student body, faculty, administration or school board. A TIME OF TRANSITION HERE’S TO A GREAT YEAR AND FOR STUDENTS & STAFF W AN EVEN BETTER 2018-2019 A WORD FROM YOUR ASB LEADERS

H

ey Hawks! The year is finally coming to an end and there’s a lot of stuff that has happened since I last talked to you, and I just want to update you guys.

During the month of May, there were a lot of people taking their AP tests and people taking their SBA tests. I’m glad that AP and SBA testing is over with. The month of testing is a stressful month for everyone, but for seniors, they get to sleep in.

So I guess that’s good?

Either way, we’re coming up on finals week and Andy Nguyen ASB PUBLIC RELATIONS OFFICER I just wanted to wish all of you good luck! We are planning on having some snacks and treats for everyone before and after school for testing week.

Just watch out for some hanging snacks somewhere in the school.

We recently had a Multicultural Assembly at our school, which showed the different cultures ranging from different ethnic cultures to the gay culture. Seeing all of the different people that are at our school was very exciting, seeing the dancing and singing performances.

Thank you to BSU, LSU, and GSA for hosting the assembly, you guys put in a lot of hard work to show the different cultures of our school. The diversity of MTHS is a reason why I’m proud to go here.

With the year coming to an end, everyone is busy studying and trying to make the most of the school year. The importance of being safe and secure is what is prevalent. Through times of stress whether it’s about finals or other problems, we as students need to support and love one another through our hardships. As a big school, we may not talk to one another as much. But if you know anyone that has been going through anything, reach out and support them. Just sparking up a conversation with a stranger can help. We can be a community that can love and support each other through our peaks and valleys, so don’t be afraid to reach out!

Well Hawks, with that being said, we do have a great school year ahead of us next year. With many exciting events coming, I can’t wait to be with you guys for the journey!

Some stuff we really want to do next year is to have some more MTHS merch (such as fanny packs,) more events, and to try to have a great and positive year.

Also, we want to bring the message of #WeAreTerrace to this upcoming school year, whatever we go through and whatever happens to us, we will always be together as a community that will support each other.

If you ever have any questions or just want to talk to me about anything, let me know!

Of course, you’ll probably see me in the hallways after school or you can contact me via my social media or email.

ith the 2017-2018 school year winding to a close, it means the end for a lot of things, but it also means a lot of new beginnings.

Seniors will be leaving Terrace which they have called home for four years and will be transitioning to a very new and thrilling part of their lives – adulthood.

This will be a dramatic change for all of them but with endings Kennedy Cooper SPORTS EDITOR come new beginnings and I’m sure they are all eager to move on to this next step of their future.

I am sad to see them go but I am excited to see where they take their newfound freedom from here.

Seniors aren’t the only ones who are ending their time at Terrace, however.

Many beloved staff members will be moving on to other jobs or retirement. This includes Nadine Coombs, Craig DeVine, Randy Sibley, Robin

Cogburn-Shelly, Gail Ludig, Joan Spears, Margaret Tibbot, Saboora Deen, Ryan Chute and possibly others.

Although they will be missed greatly, their legacies, teachings, and spirits will live on long after their gone.

Although seniors and staff may be approaching their end at Terrace, it also means a new beginning for the incoming freshmen. This is a tricky transition that we have all had to go through, but the current seniors have made it this far and so will they in a couple years.

Endings can be scary and so can saying goodbye.

Like reaching the end of a Netflix series, you have to decide what you’re going to watch next when it’s over.

This can be a daunting task, but I believe everyone will find the perfect show for them next year whether that be a thriller, comedy, adventure or even romance.

Obviously, I mean this metaphorically but I do truly hope that saying goodbye to this school year can mean a new beginning for each of your lives for the next year. H

UPSET BY VIOLENCE THREAT J

une 7, 2018 I woke up, brushed my teeth, threw on random clothes and waited for Jake to come pick me up. It was a normal day, we walked into school together laughing and making fun of each other. Deep down I was hoping that the day would have been the normal day out of the week that didn’t include any threats.

A normal day of no worrying, no threats and no anxiety.

I was wrong.

Never in my life have I ever felt so Samantha Svikel scared. Never in my life have I felt OP/ED EDITOR like I was not protected at school, even with police surrounding the campus. Three whole years at MTHS and I have never seen such a poor response by administration to something that affects all of the students and staff in the building.

In my third period class my teacher was talking to the whole class about the situations occurring at school.

The whole class talked about how they felt, this was before students found out about the new rumor.

The new rumor circulated that someone was going to attack the school at 11:20 a.m..

When I first found out, I was sitting in my choir class and I instantly thought about not only my life, but my boyfriend’s life, as well as the lives of everyone in the school building.

What shocked me the most was administrators saying this rumor was caused by students, although I heard that a person called the anonymous school tip line saying they’d come attack the school.

I don’t understand why administrators would phrase it in such a way to make it seem like us as students – students who were crying, calling their parents saying they love them

and their loved ones – blame us, US, to be the ones to spread this rumor.

The majority of students who I talked to after the event agreed with me that they did not hear about this rumor until teachers mentioned it. Something has to be missing that we do not know and it’s driving my brain crazy. I want to know the real hard truth behind this situation.

The line by the attendance office to leave school was incredibly long, filled with students rushing to leave before and after the lockdown. I went upstairs to see the line and I noticed that the majority of kids in the line were not sad, not worried and not freaking out. The students were laughing and joking around with their friends.

The kids who were crying for their life didn’t go home but rather stayed at school through the pain. I was sitting in the Hawkeye room during 6th period that day, I texted my mom asking her to excuse me from sixth period because I needed to calm down. I felt safe in the Hawkeye room, I was around people I spend a majority of my time with.

Although I was still in the building, I was not in class. That day first and second period had an average amount of people and same with my third period class. Then, fourth period, my class kept getting smaller and smaller, and by fifth period there was around onethird of the students in my class. How can we have school when students can’t focus and feel unsafe?

This topic is serious, any kid who jokes about this is not being funny. This can happen at anytime and unfortunately we as students have to think about it. We should not have to worry about someone shooting up the school.

I don’t know what was going through that person’s mind. They could have wanted to put fear into young teenagers who will now, because of all of the mass shootings, be affected by this for the rest of their life.

This event could have been real and the thought that so many

I don’t care if that’s because they didn’t know how to react but risking other people’s lives and futures are not funny and needs to be taken seriously.

I was sitting in my choir teacher’s office, as I mentioned earlier, and I was about to bawl my eyes out. This is not a way to live throughout high school. There should never be a fear of being shot by another student.

The most disappointing part to me was how the administration decided to handle the situation. You have people in the school who are bawling their eyes out and they handled it so poorly. The students were not well prepared and there were only one or two lockdown drills. The problem with the drills is no one takes them seriously.

This generation is careless, the majority of students don’t care about other students. They bully them indirectly, talk behind other people’s backs, backstab their friends, but those people believe they should be treated respectfully.

I know there are people in this school who don’t feel like their voice is heard, not only by other students but by school administrators. I have no one to blame for this, but I think that this event made students uncomfortable.

Last Friday, the administrators held a community forum, where they did confirm that this was only a rumor and not a phone call. We found out that it was spread by someone who used to go to our school but currently lives in California.

I believe that students want to see results with what happens to this kid who threatened our school.

I understand the school said they can’t punish or do anything to this kid, but in order to effectively comfort concerned students and families, I believe the administration needs to take further action. H

Several threats to school safety occurred during the week of June 4 to June 8. The threats culminated on Thursday, June 7, when the MTHS campus was put into a state of total lockdown by administrators at approximately 11:14 a.m. through an announcement over the intercom.

This total lockdown lasted until approximately 11:30 a.m., when administrators announced over the intercom that the total lockdown was over and the building would be put into a state of modified lockdown for the remainder of the day.

Principal Greg Schellenberg attempted to keep MTHS families informed of the situation during and after the response to the threats as events unfolded. Schellenberg sent a series of emails and the Edmonds School District (ESD) sent several robocalls to the MTHS community throughout the week in an attempt to keep families as informed as possible about issues relating to school safety.

DEVINE BLASTS PAST THE FINISH LINE

Aerospace teacher Craig Devine will be retiring after 18 years at Mountlake Terrace High School. Over his time teaching, he has overseen the MTHS Robotics Club and guided the STEM Leadership into the organizations they are today.

Devine graduated from Washington State University and planned to be a professional engineer. He returned to college shortly afterward, getting a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of Washington. He then spent 10 years working for John Fluke Engineering, later transferring to Northwest Spring Manufacturing in Redmond for another 7 years.

Originally, Devine didn’t plan on becoming a teacher. However, he joined the junior achievement program while at Fluke Engineering. There he visited various middle and high schools to teach economics once a week. He found that he thoroughly enjoyed every visit to the classrooms. After a num-

“I’ve also been very impressed with the staff here at MTHS,” Devine said. “There are so many staff members who are very passionate about their role as teachers and who are creative and who are very generous with their time.”

He also appreciates the MTHS administration’s work toward funding the program.

“Overall these years...the administration has been very supportive of the growth of STEM. The support that we have gotten is amazing.”

Now, Devine can look back and reflect on his time spent here and is original decision to go into education after leaving his engineering career.

“This has been the best career decision I have ever made,” Devine said. “And it has been hard, teaching has been a challenging role, but as hard as it’s been, it’s been very rewarding. I feel very fortunate to receive an opportunity to teach here.”

“Thanks to students, staff and administration that have been so supportive,” Devine said, ”it has been a wonderful experience.” H

Shelly engraves her name in stone Story by Jackson Freund HAWKEYE STAFF

Robin Cogburn, now Robin Shelly as of Feb. 2018, has been teaching for 33 years total, of which 28 have been in Washington, and has taught at MTHS for 15 of those years as a Spanish teacher.

Before attending college, Shelly was an employee at a restaurant. She planned to continue working in restaurants until one day when her family went on a cruise to Mexico. During this trip, Shelly fell in love with the Mexican culture.

Shelly realized how kind and giving the people were and decided that she wanted to visit Mexico more. At that time, she realized she should attend college to get a better paying job. Once she returned from Mexico, she immediately quit her job and started attending college, having doubts in the beginning but continuing nonetheless.

After finishing college, Shelly graduated with a bachelor’s degree in home economics education and a minor in Spanish. After beginning to teach

Spanish, she became more interested in the culture, and later earned a master’s degree in teaching Spanish. She eventually acquired a doctorate’s degree in language, literacy and culture in the foreign and second language education department.

Shelly decided to retire from teaching Spanish this year due to her recent marriage and plans to move to Arizona, where she will continue to focus on her hobby of firearms engraving.

Shelly became interested in firearms engraving during her time in SingleAction Shooting Society (SASS), an organization formed to preserve singleaction firearms invented before the 1900s. This group is commonly known for shooting “cowboy,” in which a person would reenact famous gunfights from movies with live ammo using two pistols, a rifle and a shotgun to shoot metal targets. In these reenactments, the shooter is timed to see the speed of the firing and the accuracy of the firing, being docked points by not shooting in the correct pattern or missing the tar-

get. During these reenactments Shelly goes by the alias “Buttercup Bandit,” as the people involved are not supposed to use their real name in these events.

“The thing that I really like is that you have to dress in costumes from 1900 or before,” Shelly said. “I really like the costumes.”

When Shelly first started out, she noticed other firearms and how beautiful they were due to professional engravings.

“I’ve been practicing firearms engraving for four years now,” Shelly stated.

Off of a personal recommendation from another shooter, Shelly started taking classes in Kansas to learn engraving in 2014 and has been in love with it ever since.

As well as spending time in firearms engraving, Shelly will be messing around in real estate along with her husband, who is also retired,and is currently making money through real estate in Arizona. H

Senior Ethan Pyke is the lead trombone player in Jazz 1 and also a prominent student in the computer science pathway in STEM at MTHS. “I like to incorporate music and STEM together which is something that not many people do,” Pyke said.

Childhood Impacts Growing up, Pyke’s family had lots of influence in both his music and STEM career. Pyke is both Vietnamese and British.

“My dad’s side is the British side, and they have really been the driving force on my music passion,” Pyke said.

Pyke’s paternal grandmother was an important figure for him as a musician. Pyke recalls that she “was a really devoted musician.”

“Everytime I went over to her house she played piano for me and taught me how to play duets on the piano with her,” Pyke said.

Pyke’s Vietnamese heritage had a great influence on his academic career, pushing him to work hard and pursue a rigorous academic program.

“My mom’s side is Vietnamese, and one of the things that Vietnamese people push the most is hardwork and determination, so they have really pushed me on school work and all that,” Pyke said.

“Having him play trombone and then me being able to continue that was really one of the driving forces of me starting band,” Pyke said. “Once I got to middle school that passion came from my middle school band director, Ron Madden.

He really inspired me to continue it and when I got to high school I went to the Mountlake Terrace Jazz Band, as it’s one of the best ones in the country.”

Over Pyke’s four years of high school, he was twice able to attend the Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition & Festival, which is hosted in New York by one of the nation’s best jazz orchestras, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra (JLCO). This is a national competition where only fifteen out of over 100 bands are selected to compete. As a senior, while Pyke was lead trombonist, JLCO gave the section an Outstanding Trombone Section Award.

“For the past few years we’ve made it to the Essentially Ellington competition which this school has only done a couple other times for consecutive years,” Pyke said. “I hope that we can extend this streak even to longer periods of time, so maybe next year if they go for a third time in a row that’ll be the longest streak in Terrace history.”

During the road to success, Pyke realized one recurring challenge is communication and being able to work in unity.

“Being able to overcome that and to make music is definitely one of the harder things we had to learn how to do,” Pyke said. “Now as a senior I pride myself in being able to help diminish conflicts in the band because I’ve been through all of those situations where I had to learn how to

overcome that. It was conflicts that were super hard to overcome and learn how to fix that, and after doing that I’ve learned how to fix it later on.”

WHEELS UP FOR WELLESLEY

As a member of the 2018 graduating class, Karen Benson will be leaving MTHS with a powerful message to students, traveling 3000 miles to the next big step in her life.

Throughout her four years as a Hawk, Benson has been recognized multiple times for her academic excellence and has been very involved in the school through clubs and extracurricular activities.

Benson has been involved in track and field, FRC Robotics, STEM Leadership, American Sign Language (ASL) Honor Society, National Honor Society and IATRIX21.

Along with her extracurriculars, she held many leadership roles. Benson held positions such as treasurer her sophomore year and activities manager junior year in ASL Honor Society. In ASL Honor Society, she helped plan and participated in events including the Deaf Fiesta at Central Washington University and the Deaf Carnival at Seattle Children’s Hospital. These events involved leading games and activities with kids and helping them to translate between English and ASL. For three years, Benson has also been involved in STEM leadership, where she helped organize and volunteered in outreach events. For example, Benson taught elementary and middle school students how to light LEDs using breadboards in these outreach events.

Being academically driven, she has maintained a 4.0 throughout high school and will graduate as a valedictorian.

Throughout her four years at Terrace, she has taken a total of nine AP classes, a Running Start class, five STEM classes and several dual enrollment courses at Edmonds Community College and Seattle Community College.

“I am most proud that I have handled these rigorous classes, keeping my grades up, running in my free time, volunteering at organizations outside of school such as the Deaf Fiesta, the Deaf Carnival, and Food Lifeline and working part time all four years of high school,” Benson said, adding that she’ll be running in her first half marathon June 12.

She will be attending Wellesley College in Massachusetts in the fall, where she has received more than $250,000 in scholarships. There, Benson will be pursuing a degree in biochemistry and hopes to attend graduate school, focusing on a degree in genetics.

Benson feels that if there was a legacy she is leaving behind, it would be her dedication to school work. As Benson grew up, she was surrounded by poverty and addiction and with this, there were no high expectations of her or pressure for her to go above and beyond in school.

“From a young age I knew I wanted to achieve academic success. I’ve worked hard throughout my years in school and it has got me here, planning on attending Wellesley College, my dream school,” Benson said.

With Benson’s hard work, she is attending Wellesley College with a $251,000 scholarship. Another part of the legacy she hopes to leave behind at MTHS is that “all students of different backgrounds can be successful in high school and beyond.”

At this point of Benson’s high school career, she is not nervous but as she looks back on her freshman year, it was the exact opposite. Benson would’ve never dared to go to a col-

lege more than an hour away from home as a freshman. This fall, she is headed to a school 3,000 miles away.

“Yet somehow as I’m approaching the end of high school and the beginning of this new stage in my life, I feel more excitement than fear,” Benson said. “I know this will hold big things for me and I can’t wait to obtain them all.”

If she could go back and tell her freshman self something, she would say, “I wish I could have told myself to take life less seriously.”

“From a young age I knew I wanted to achieve academic success. I’ve worked hard throughout my years in school and it has got me here, planning on attending Wellesley College, my dream school.”

Benson remembers waking up at sunrise on countless weekends sitting at her kitchen counter studying until sunset. She believes this dedication to her learning has played a part in her success as a student, but it has taken a toll on her mental health throughout her high school career.

“If I could do it again, I would’ve taken more time with my friends and family, to enjoy life here in high school, while the chance is still here,” Benson said. “High school goes by so fast, don’t take for granted the time you have in these halls.”

Through her high school career, Benson expressed that she has grown immensely since freshman year.

Karen Benson “I feel like I am more confident than I was freshman year,” she said. “I used to be much more shy than I am currently. It made me very anxious to be in class, work in group projects, or be in big social groups.”

Benson believes working in food service such as soup kitchens has helped her to break her out of her shell.

“Though I still have moments where it’s overwhelming to be in a big group of people, I have become a lot more comfortable in myself in working with others,” she said.

With graduation being only a few weeks away, Benson is excited about the future, knowing it will hold big things for her and she can’t wait to go for them all.

Along with a high school diploma, Benson will also earn an Honors STEM diploma.

“STEM has definitely gotten me more involved in the school, making me want to stay after school to work on projects or help out around the department,” she said.

Benson has enjoyed teaching kids circuitry at outreach events such as MTHS’s annual STEM Middle School Camp at the beginning of the summer.

It makes Benson happy to encourage younger kids to get involved in STEM early, especially young girls. As a middle schooler, she was nervous to enter a male dominated subject.

“Now, in STEM English 12, I am the only girl in my class,” she said. “I hope that other young girls find the same passion for STEM that I have and get involved in the field.”

As Benson graduates and moves on to the next big step in her life, she hopes to show that no matter who you are you and what background students come from, they deserve and can succeed in school. H

For many students, their last days at Terrace are quickly barreling towards them. Some already know what they want to do after they depart; they leave with college acceptance letters in hand, or with employment already arranged in a variety of careers. Some students, unsure of where they want to go in life, intend to spend a year exploring their interests through resting, individual exploration and occupational experience.

Others intend to serve their nation through military service.

But some students are still unsure as to what they want to do when they exit high school — and for the rest of their lives.

It’s a big world out there, and the options available to budding high school graduates aren’t always clear. Significant emphasis is placed on the traditional four-year college setting, which isn’t the best route for many students. The places students can go after they graduate are myriad and multiple.

TRADE SCHOOL AND APPRENTICESHIPS

The most conventional post-secondary setting is the four-year university. Four-year universities include most well-known universities, such as Harvard, Stanford, Yale and UW. Statistics published in 2017 by the National Center for Education Statistics say that the majority — 13.4 million — of the 20.4 million students enrolling in colleges and universities in the fall of 2017 will attend four-year universities; the University of Washington’s Seattle campus alone admitted 31,418 undergraduate students in 2016.

There are thousands of universities in the United States — about 5,300, according to the Washington Post. The selection of universities a student has to choose from is broad and universities run the gamut in terms of tuition, enrollment, discipline, class size, campus location, residency and political diversity.

Many schools specialize in one particular discipline — for example, Reed College, which Steve Jobs briefly attended, focuses on the liberal arts and humanities, and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, as is implied, is heavily focused on aerospace. The diversity of courses at four-year universities both major and minor means that there are courses for almost anybody’s interests.

Community college represents a cheaper, more accessible route to a four-year degree than attending a four-year university outright. Community college allows students to transition more smoothly between high school and four-year universities.

“It’s pretty much the same classes that you would take anywhere, at least for the first two years,” said Elissa Sanford, quoted in the US News and World Report, which produces rankings of colleges and universities that are widely cited.

Students can work part-time, living closer to or at home to reduce costs, all for tuition much cheaper than four-year universities. Many community colleges, including the local Edmonds Community College, have transferable credits with state public universities like UW, allowing students to complete their associate degree at community college before transferring to a traditional four-year institution. Community colleges typically have lower student-faculty ratios and more flexibility in scheduling, allowing students to attend classes on their own terms.

Trade schools are schools that, rather than supplying a well-rounded curriculum that lead to a bachelor’s degree or higher in a more general discipline, usually issue associate degrees and, more importantly, certifications that signify competence in a particular craft. Trade schools prepare their students for specific careers like machining and auto work, allowing them to hone their skills for the workforce.

The highly-skilled blue-collar workers that trade schools produce are in high demand in the modern era — for example, the Huffington Post reported in 2017 that demand for carpentry in particular is slated to increase by 24 percent through 2022 for wages nearing $90,000 per year. And, thanks to the demographics of the current workforce, that growth is set to continue.

A 2012 survey by Emsi (formerly Economic Modeling Specialists International) cited in Forbes reported that the majority of skilled workers in the US were older than 45. Eventually, those workers will retire, and the resulting vacuum of skilled laborers will make new talents in skilled work very desirable to employers.

According to the Gap Year Association, which aims to “maximize the potential of young adults, through accessible and meaningful gap year opportunities,”, gap years are becoming increasingly popular among students.

Indeed, many colleges, including Harvard, Yale, Princeton and the University of North Carolina encourage students to take a year off. A study by Middlebury College found that students taking gap years did not see a significant reduction in GPA; in fact, the study found, the average GPA for students who had taken gap years was higher.

Susan H. Greenberg, a parent, wrote in a New York Times editorial that her daughter’s gap year, during which she spent a year au pairing (essentially a live-in maid and babysitter) in Austria enriched her daughter, broadened her interests and expanded her sense of purpose and responsibility. “When you’ve spent a year legally sipping pilsner with intrepid friends in European pubs,” said Greenberg, “hanging out in a dorm room doing shots until you puke looks pretty unappealing.”

That’s not to say that a gap year is an excuse just to sit around and do nothing. As Jeffrey Selingo, University of Arizona professor, said, “Students who delay college to work odd jobs for a while to try to ‘find themselves’ don’t do as well as everyone else when they get to college. They get lower grades, and there’s a greater chance they will drop out.” Instead, Selingo wrote, gap years should be meaningful to a student, with purposeful work experience, preparation for their eventual college entrance or, as Greenberg’s daughter did, travel to enrich oneself. As long as students find an appropriate means to broaden their horizons, a gap year can provide a meaningful and valuable opportunity to recharge themselves before university.

MILITARY SERVICE

WORK

With 3.2 million people in their employ in 2015, Forbes reports, the United States Department of Defense, which encompasses the US Air Force, the US Navy, the US Army and the US Marine Corps, is the world’s largest employer. Their website, with a more modest figure approaching 1.9 million employees, states that they are the largest employer in the nation.

Every year, many students elect to join the ranks of the Department of Defense, rather than pursuing a more ‘traditional’ post-secondary education. There are a variety of reasons students enlist in the armed forces or enroll in the various officer training programs. Some feel a sense of patriotism. Some seek the benefits that come with the military, such as those afforded under the Post-9/11 GI Bill. Some want to develop certain trade skills necessary for a post-military career.

In addition, the Post-9/11 GI Bill affords veterans considerable amenity with regard to post-military education, including the subsidy of a large part of tuition costs at a multitude of universities across the United States. Other services the GI Bill offers are internships, apprenticeships, small business management courses and commercial flight training.

“I knew it was something I wanted to do since I was fourteen years old,” Staff Sergeant Logan Doyle, an Army recruiter from the Lynnwood Recruiting Center, said. “I was watching the Military Channel, watching the History Channel and I was just so proud of what I saw, and what I thought the American military was all about. I wanted to be a part of that organization.

Numerous options exist for those who wish to join, and military service does not necessarily mean foregoing college. For example, the ROTC program subsidizes post-secondary education at qualified institutions for those who join and trains them concurrently to be an officer in exchange for committing to a military career following graduation. For those who wish to join the military but wish to remain in civilian life, the reserves allow recruits to attend the same boot camp as recruits going into active service, but only requires them to volunteer a weekend of their time a month.

Perhaps the best option for learning the skills required for adulthood is going straight to work.

Even if students start at an entry-level position, there is often a chance for advancement. Famous executives David Geffen, for whom David Geffen Hall in New York is named, and Simon Cowell started in the mailroom and ended up at the top echelons of the company.

Having a greater breadth of work experience helps in finding better jobs later on, and looks good on a college application should one later decide to attend college.

Working before college also allows potential applicants to better finance their education with money gained while on the job, and having a stable income allows people to effectively learn to manage and budget their money — a crucial skill when juggling food, room and board, tuition and other expenses. The experience gained from employment can better inform a student’s interests and allows them time to think about whether they would like to go back to schooling, or if they would like to advance their career.

Tunny Parrish has been many things. Not only has he been a member of STEM leadership, the drumline and the percussion ensemble, but he has also been an active member in the MTHS drama department and National Honor Society.

Joining the drama department during junior year, Parrish’s first production with the department was “Zombie Prom,” a musical put on by the drama department during January 2017.

“When someone feels like they don’t have a voice in a traditional setting, they should have a space to do that, so like giving the girls a club. It’s not exclusive; if a boy really wanted to join, we’re not going to close the door on him or anything,” Nina explained.

“It wasn’t meant to exclude anybody. It was giving a space. It was to bring together and have a voice.”

To Nina and Ryan, representation was a need. They sought a way for girls to gain confidence and earn recognition in STEM. “We have things all the time that exclude people. [With] IATRIX, the point is that girls don’t have a voice and a guy cannot come in and say, ‘Absolutely, girls have a voice in STEM.’ Where does he get that?”

Ryan said. “That’s why we did it. We realized the need for [representation] and then we met it with this club.”

As their senior year nears a close, the Berrys have to spend their post-high school years apart. Though both participated in the bioscience pathway at MTHS, they plan to pursue the other two pathways—computer science and aerospace.

Nina will attend Gonzaga University to study computer science and computational thinking. Ryan has been directly admitted into the engineering program at the University of Washington, but is unsure of her exact field of study.

They’ve cherished their time through all levels of school together, which has had its share of advantages.

“You have a good friend that you can be with and also like, we’ve had really good friendship more as friends than cousins. The downside is some people see [us] as a unit,” Ryan said. “It’s been hard to maintain individuality, I’ll be honest. I’m very sentimental, but we’re going off to college next year and we’re going to be four, five hours away.

I haven’t been worried about trying to be myself. I just want to hold on to Nina.”

Despite spending nearly their entire lives together, the Berrys believe they can persevere through their separation. “[It’s nice] having someone that you can find in the crowd and know that you’re going to know somebody. Splitting off is going to be really hard, but we’re going to be fine. We can’t have each other, but we can live without each other; we have to,” Nina said.

Together, they hope they’ve left a legacy of kindness and service at MTHS, which is reflective of their work under IATRIX21, Key Club, LINK Crew, National Honor Society and ASB. The Berrys want to offer advice to the incoming freshmen that personally helped them fit in at MTHS and define themselves.

Ryan advises that students push themselves and “go for it,” while Nina hopes they understand that “no club is so daunting” to join.

Whether in the community or in oneself, Nina advises that others live by her favorite quote: “Nothing changes if nothing changes.”

For Nina and Ryan, they’ll be the ones to make a change as they see fit. H

SUPPORTING EACH OTHER...

Seniors Hannah Gibson and Caylie Laney have been dedicated cheerleaders at Terrace for all three years of high school. Gibson has been cheering since sixth grade as a Little Hawk. “It was kind of just a spur of the moment thing. My stepmom was friends with the coach that was doing the MTYA team and they needed more girls and I was doing nothing in the summer so I just kinda joined and liked it,” Gibson said. Laney, on the other hand, originally joined because a friend wanted her to tryout with her and now it’s become something really important to her.

Both of these girls have put a lot of work into their team and it has definitely paid off, seeing as they have made it to state two years in a row. Going to state has been a highlight for both of them, especially their junior year when they had a last minute state qualifier competition. When they found out they made it, it was a huge bonding moment for their team.

Bonding was important to both of them, and it has created some of their fondest memories. Gibson said, “My favorite memory was at a camp we have over the summer at Central Washington and it was just a fun group of girls and we had the nights to ourselves in the dorms so we just got to hang out and we all went into one room and just talked about life and I’ve never been on a team that was so open to talk to people about things so I would say that was fun.”

Because of the strong bonds that Gibson and Caylie have made with their team and their coach over the years, having to part with them will be difficult. “I’m going to miss a lot of the underclassmen that I’ve gotten to know over the years,” said Laney.

After high school both plan to continue their education but unfortunately, will not be continuing their cheering career. Gibson plans on attending Gonzaga University where she will be majoring in Biology and Pre Medicine. Laney will attend the University of Washington, majoring in Pre Health Sciences. H

Ryan Figueroa

A joke became reality for senior swimmer Ryan Figueroa. It all started Figueroa’s junior year when he and cocaptains Nate Miller and Diego Aguiniga were talking about swimming at the high school level.

Aguiniga “was talking about swimming, but was joking about swimming because we never heard anything about them.

Then a couple days went by and we actually ended up joining the team.”

For the past seasons, Figueroa swam the 50 free, 100 free, 200 medley relay and the 200 free relay.

One struggle Figueroa experienced while swimming was handling breathing.

While racing, the struggle is “not panicking when you’re about to drown,” Figueroa said. “It’s holding your breath because you’re lungs are screaming for air.

Your body is screaming for air. It’s passing through that pain.”

Before meets, Figueroa will not eat four hours prior to swimming, otherwise he will throw up. He advises other swimmers “after the meet stuff your face with anything you can find.”

Figueroa’s favorite part about high school sports is “the team. It was really fun getting to know how to swim,” Figueroa said.

“I met a lot of friends swimming just for two years.”

This year MTHS joined together with Edmonds-Woodway High School to create a team since together they made fourteen swimmers, seven from MTHS and seven from Edmonds-Woodway High School.

The team played football as a bonding exercise, which is one of Figueroa’s favorite memories. “We did seven on seven. It was Terrace versus Edmonds [Woodway].

That was a really good game, we had a lot of fun.” After graduating from MTHS, Figueroa will miss the teammates the most.

Figueroa would like to tell others “swim is really fun. More people should join and we [swimmers] should get more recognition because swim is exhausting. Swim is really hard. It’s a life skill, too.”

In the fall of 2018, Figueroa will be attending Western Washington University and will study industrial engineering/technology. H

Senior Jacob Peters, who listens to Three Days Grace before his games, will be leaving a legacy in MTHS. When Peters is graduating he will be missing the rivalries he’s made on the Terrace Tennis team.

Peters started playing tennis when he was about 10 years old. His parents encouraged him greatly.

Peters won Rookie of the Year his freshman year and recently received the Edmonds Scholar Award.

The Edmonds Scholar Award is an award that goes to athletes who were successful that season.

Peters favorite part throughout Tennis was the connections he made with others throughout the years and “when my teammates were cheering for me during a three hour match.”

The highlight of Peters four years was when he played a match against the best player in the district. Peters said, “I knew going into the match my chances of winning were slim, but I knew how to

play him and where to expose his weak points.”

Peters lost that match 5-7 and 3-6 but he was proud of how he played the game.

One of Peters’s conflicts was getting mono halfway through his junior year, which prevented him from completing the season. “It was disappointing because that was the best season Terrace had,” Peters commented.

At the very first practice Peters’s head coach Alberto Ramirez decided to put him in a singles match against the best seniors on the team at the time; Peters won both of the games which made him very proud of himself.

Before Peters serves the ball, he always bounces the ball three times on the ground with his hand and spins the racket to wish him luck.

After graduation, Peters will be attending The University of Portland mastering in Mechanical Engineering. A LESSON LEARNED IN EVERY MATCH

Senior Jenny Tran decided to play tennis because that’s what her friends were all doing freshman year, and Tran ended up having the time of her life playing all four years at MTHS. The memories that she made at team bondings were what she is going to treasure the most. She made so many friends through tennis, and will miss her teammates and Coach Alberto Ramirez, who is planning on retiring this year, most of all.

Starting out on the tennis team, Tran struggled because she had never played tennis before.

“It was my first time holding a racket and I had no idea how to aim.

Balls would be flying out the gates every five minutes,” Tran said.

Her first year, Tran did not make the varsity team. This was hard on her because her friends did end up making varsity. Add that with little to no wins during

her freshman season, and Tran felt extremely discouraged.

“Not winning any games in the season definitely was disheartening, but with every match I learned something new,” Tran said.

However, she managed to get on the varsity tennis team in her sophomore year. She continued to improve and was team captain her senior year along with current junior Kim Nguyen. They made a great team, Nguyen being the more spirited of the two and Tran being more quiet and handling most of the team organizing.

Women’s Varsity Tennis has not been at its best in the past few years, and this year Tran mentioned that they had their first win of the year against Marysville Getchell. She will never forget the joy that came with that win. Women’s Tennis had not had a win in two years, and to

win three matches this year was a big deal.

Along with the wins that they had gotten this year, Tran’s favorite part about playing tennis at MTHS was the team bonding that her and her teammates got to do together.

Something that the Varsity tennis girls would often do was go out to eat at least two times a week, which is something Tran very much enjoyed.

Tran will not be continuing Tennis next year, but she will be attending University of Washington Bothell to study business.

Tran recommends everybody to do a school sport.

“Joining a sport was probably the highlight of my high school career,” Tran said. “So you should join. It may sound intimidating at first, like all that exercise and running, but it is all worth it in the end.” H

“I remember my freshmen and sophomore year both clashed together. I had soccer year round besides when high school was doing it. There were track meets and then soccer games. It was hard to pick one [sport],” Hart said.

Luckily for MTHS, Hart fully dedicated herself to the MTHS women’s soccer team.

“I made amazing friends during high school sports and I met new people, which was really cool,” Hart said.

One of her favorite soccer memories was with junior Abbi Johnson, a midfielder, during a soccer game this season.

“Abbi Johnson assisted one of my goals,” Hart said. “She crossed it in and I headed it in. It wasn’t a tie breaker, but it brought us up to a tie. Afterwards we hugged. You

know, homie love.”

Hart cherishes the memories made while on the soccer team. She enjoyed “goofing around at soccer practice after school… we clown around and have a good time.”

Julia will miss the people she met while playing soccer the most. Before games “we used to listen to music in the locker rooms and get pumped.”

Hart noticed herself improving throughout her time playing at MTHS with the help of her team.

“My sophomore and junior year I made it to the second team in WESCO and my senior year I made it to the first team,” Hart said.

After each season of soccer, specific awards are handed out for members of the team. Hart earned most improved her freshman year. During her junior year, she earned most tenacious player. This year, she received the award for being the most outstanding player.

Hart will be playing soccer at Edmonds Community College next year. Her field of study is not yet determined, but she is pursuing an AA degree. H

GRUSHING TO THE FINISH

The track team is full of different people and personalities, and is a great way to make friends. That’s what attracted Senior Madisen Grush to the MTHS track team.

Starting her track career off in eighth grade, she joined to make friends and stay in shape for volleyball, which is played in the fall. Grush has always enjoyed sports, as it pushes her to be at her best.

“Working out with other people who have the same drive as me to become better athletes and perform better was so much fun because you can cheer each other on and see how much everyone can grow,” Grush said. “I also enjoyed representing the school.”

But with that drive to be the best that one can be, one can hurt themselves along the way, which is what Grush did this year during her last track season.

“I had an injury that really put a strain on my performance for my events, and it set me back from progressing in my events,” Grush said. It was heartbreaking because it was towards the end of the season when personal records start to become more common and the competition heats up, I found it difficult to keep up with everybody else’s improvement.”

But with these hardships also came many accomplishments. Grush said the highlight of her track career was when she made a personal record with javelin during districts last year.

Madisen Grush tory, especially since I had been trying to hit a personal record over 90 feet,” Grush said.

She has won awards for javelin and shot put over the past four years. Additionally, being a thrower comes with many fun bonding activities in which throwers get to take part.

“Last year after one of the meets most of the throwers went back to someone’s house for tacos,” Grush said. “It was a last minute planned thing but it was so much fun!

We played some games and did the most bonding I’ve ever done with a team.”

Along with team bondings, Grush says she is going to miss the inside jokes, bus rides and overall just being outside surrounded by other athletes.

Grush also mentioned the coaches for the MTHS track team and recognized them for all of their work and dedication.

“They do an amazing job of recognizing every athlete and work with them to help them achieve their goals and improve their skills,” Grush said.

“They also keep practice fun and I know that there wasn’t a day that I ever wanted to miss or be anywhere else. So if anyone is looking for a way to be more active in the school or looking for something to fill their time, then I would

definitely recommend coming out for track because there is so much to gain from participating in this sport!”

Grush will not be continuing track when she goes off to Western Washington University in the fall, but she will be studying physical therapy and plans to continue her education as far as a doctorate degree. H

From Mat Man to Marines

From a early age, senior Reyne Mack has been widely seen as a devoted member of multiple organizations and teams. He has been a Boy Scout since he was ten, he was part of the football team during his freshman and sophomore years, he was a member of track from his freshman through his junior years and has played a major role in the MTHS wrestling program.

Mack has been apart of wrestling for a total of six years, having started in seventh grade and continuing through his senior year. He first joined wrestling because of his mother, who forced him to join a sport.

He had the options of swimming, basketball and wrestling.

He chose wrestling because he “couldn’t dribble for [his] life” in Mack slams his opponent into the mats during a hotly contested match. Mack would go on to win the match. Mack also has participated in the Washington state wrestling championships, getting fourth place in his junior year and 17th in his senior year. He has also won three tournaments in his wrestling career at Terrace.

Mack not only wrestles for the school but also does freestyle Greco-Roman wrestling, a style of wrestling that was founded in 1848 inspired by the wrestling of antique societies and has been in the Olympics since 1896. He placed fourth in state GrecoRoman wrestling this year.

After high school, Mack intends to enter the U.S. Marines and to continue his wrestling career there, when not protecting our country. After serving in the Marines, Mack has plans to possibly become a wrestling coach to teach the next generation to wrestle. H

Dual diamond threat

Following in the footsteps of his brother, Jaden Yackley, Kendall Yackley started playing baseball when he was 5 years old and stuck with it.

Yackley and his brother have always had a close relationship and share a lot of the same interests such as baseball, hunting, fishing and other activities.

“We are very competitive with each other and it’s always a battle of who can be the best,” Yackley said. “He’s taught me

When Yackley started his baseball career he, like many baseball players,started at the little league level with Alderwood Little League. Yackley played baseball with Alderwood Little League until he was 11. Then, when he was 12 he played for the MTYAA team, which is a feeder team for MTHS. Select baseball has been a part of Yackleys career for sometime. He started when he was only 8 years old playing for the Falcons based out of Woodinville. Next he traveled all the way to Cooperstown, New York to play in a tournament with the Everett Ironhawks before he played with the Northwest Bandits when we was 13, and still plays with them today.

Here at Terrace Yackley is the Varsity Captain and one of the starting pitchers for the Hawks.

When talking about his favorite part of playing high school sports he says that it is less competitive the select baseball,w “It’s fun to just come out and just compete and have fun,” said Yackley.

But that doesn’t mean the pressure was not on Yackley this year during the playoffs. For the first time in Terrace baseball history, the boys advanced to state and got all the way to

Jasmine Zenk has been playing softball since she was five years old. She was encouraged to start her softball career by her parents, who ensured she was active in athletic programs from a young age.

“My parents always had me playing a bunch of sports when I was younger just to see which ones I would enjoy,” Zenk said. “Athletics have always been a huge part of my family.”

The highlight of Zenk’s sports career came while playing with the MTHS women’s softball team last year, when she helped her team win the 2A district championships and advance to the state women’s softball competition.

Additionally, the victory came on her birthday that year, firmly cementing the memory as a highlight of both her softball and high school career.

Although Zenk firmly enjoys all aspects of being a member of the MTHS women’s softball team, Zenk especially enjoys the relationships she has developed with her teammates over the years.

“My favorite thing about high school sports has been the relationships that have stemmed from them,” Zenk said.

“Having a new set of girls coming in every year to join the team... is something that I find to be very special and irreplaceable. Being surrounded by your teammates for two to three months from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. at school and practice teaches you how to grow with your teammates, and it brings you closer together.”

Zenk has earned a variety of awards from her four years as a member of the MTHS women’s softball team. She earned the Second Team All WESCO Softball Utility Player award during both her freshman and sophomore years. In her junior year, Zenk earned the First Team All Wesco Third

Yackley was the starting pitcher on the mound and he delivered. He has 5 strikeouts and no walks. Even though the Hawks got second, it was a big accomplishment and the highlight of Yackley’s baseball career.

Yackley said that his favorite moment was during districts was knocking our Anacortes, “I don’t think anyone from that league likes them and when we beat them at their home field when the whole town was there, it was awesome.” mentioned Yackley “Knocking them out of the district tournament and advancing to state was something that I’ll never forget. The adrenaline was pumping through everyone’s veins and after that game we knew we could do something incredible. We were just one win short.”

Yackley’s baseball career at Terrace has come to an end, but we he will be continuing in college. He will be attending Jamestown University in North Dakota to play baseball and study physical education. He chose Jamestown because partly because it had everything that he was looking for, such as a small campus and everything that he loves is so close. He is also choosing Jamestown because his brother is there and he wants to play one more year with Jaden before he graduates. H

Zek earned the Basketball MVP award during her sophomore year and the Basketball Coaches award during her senior year.

Although Zenk has achieved a great deal of athletic success during her four years at MTHS, this success has not come without its fair share of struggles. Zenk has especially struggled with putting too much pressure on herself due to the intense feelings of competitiveness she feels for sports.

“One of the biggest struggles that I have encountered while playing sports is being too hard on myself,” Zenk said. “I am very competitive, and I often put too much pressure on myself, especially in softball, which I believe is harder to deal with than pressure from others.”

However, Zenk hs found that she has been able to channel the pressure that comes from her fierce competitiveness into improving both her and her team’s performance.

“As I got older I learned how to channel these feelings and apply them to the game in a way that would not only benefit myself, but my team as well,” Zenk said.

After graduating, Zenk plans to attend the Nursing School at Concordia University in Portland, Oregon. She plans to become an emergency room nurse after graduating college. Zenk will not continue to play sports at Concordia University.

CHUTE CAPITOL BOUND Ryan Chute

Honors Algebra 2 and programming teacher Ryan Chute will be leaving MTHS this year. Chute started at MTHS four years ago, coming and going just with the seniors graduating this June.

After moving 12 times within four countries: Canada, Taiwan, USA and Hong Kong, Chute hopes to settle down sooner rather than later. Chute described his life as progressing in increments of four, moving almost every four years.

Before coming to MTHS, Chute worked in south Tacoma for four years and taught math courses ranging from sixth grade math all the way through AP Calculus. Chute described it as “daunting” because it was his first real teaching job.

Next in his life journey he will be moving

down south towards Olympia, where it’s more affordable to live and enjoy the pleasures of life.

Chute hopes to make the most out of his life with his career and teach students to the fullest. Not only teaching them about math, but also about life skills and helping them learn more about themselves along the way. This is his goal because kids are young, important and “I want to improve humans as best as possible.”

Chute also believes that having a good variety in classes is what makes things unique.

“Having different genders and personalities is what shows students the difference within each other,” Chute said.

Making the world a good place and full of good people is one of Chute’s life goals.

He strives to be a good friend and teacher.

“With my students I’m Mr. Chute, but with my friends, I’m Ryan.”

His main goal with his family is to show his love, care and to tell them everything, not hide anything from them.

“This year is different compared to my last four years,” Chute said. He went on to explain that he has noticed more students are lost, and eyes were getting more and more droopy, especially during second semester when he noticed homework rates increasing.

Aside from teaching, Chute enjoys listening to music and playing video games like Rocket League, Witcher 3, Freecell, Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts and Cuphead.

He also enjoys going to bakeries and eating pastries to satisfy his sweet tooth, and trying out and discovering new movies.

His favorite foods range from chocolate and crepes to gyoza and curry. Chocolate is Chute’s number one favorite food though.

“Chocolate is made in so many ways,” Chute said about his favorite food.

Chute’s favorite animals are cats, and he owns two of them.

“One of my cats is crazy and randomly will run up and down the stairs with a fluffy tail,” Chute said.

His two cats are a Tuxedo and a Calico.

Chute says the reason that he enjoys cats is because they relate to his personality so well, unpredictable yet caring in their own ways.

Chute will be missed by many students, not only for his wonderful teaching methods but for his funny, sarcastic and outgoing personality. H
