Opportunities for career exploration, pre-graduation

F

ive classes a day devoted to glass and metalworking. Thousands of dollars from Career Tech Ed (CTE) to fund materials and machinery to make the Jewelry and Metal Design program of the highest quality.

Mark Paxtyn Merten Editor-in-chief Walker’s story of introducing the Jewelry and Metal Design class to our campus draws attention to just one example concerning the growing amount of opportunities for high schoolers to explore various interests and career opportunities that exist at here and throughout the Edmonds School District (ESD).

At MTHS alone, there are many electives available – art, CTE, languages and more.

For instance, students can pursue their interests in marketing by running the

student store. Those who want to go into childcare can take Child Development.

Prospective engineers, doctors and scientists can go into the STEM program and take classes in engineering, biotechnology, aerospace and computer science.

These classes can put students in positions to get ahead in their respective fields post-high school, and also allow them to wade through the options to figure out what field best suits them.

In addition to classes offered here, students can take intra-district classes, which are CTE classes located throughout the district high schools and at Edmonds Community College. Current intra-district offerings include career preparation classes in architecture, broadcast field production (at MTHS), carpentry and construction, fire services and health care professions.

Sno-Isle TECH is a similar program that offers five career pathways with multiple courses in each. Students can enhance their

skills in business, marketing and management, human services, information technology, science and health, and trade and industry. These classes can offer a professional setting in a variety of careers.

There’s only one problem: availability.

Many of these courses are only offered for a single period or timeframe during the day, making it tough on students with strict schedules to fit them in. Greater availability would solve this, however that will not happen without a greater demand for the classes. This problem is likely not due to a lack of interest, rather a lack of knowledge of these programs among those who they would appeal the most.

Essentially, there are plenty of opportunities for students to try new things and explore different careers. Students simply have to spread the word about them as well as commit themselves to getting the most out of the variety of programs designed to help students pursue their dreams. H

Finals aren’t necessary

Student expression bill

A

bill promoting the freedom of student expression was heard in Olympia on Jan. 21. Students and advisers testified in support of the bill, which would prevent censoring student journalists among other advances.

The bill would also assist in reversing the impacts of a the 1988 Supreme Court Hazelwood v.

Kuhlmeier ruling, where student journalists were forced to censor entire articles due to the school principal deeming subjects inappropriate for publication. The journalists were required to change names and get permission from outside references.

The Supreme Court determined the journalists’ first amendment rights were not being violated in a 5-3 vote.

Passing this bill would give student media statewide a real voice. Student journalists would have the opportunity to make a difference in their communities and report real news without fear of censorship. They wouldn’t be held back by the arbitrary actions of school officials.

The Student Freedom of Expression Bill – SB 6233 – has yet to be passed by the Senate Education Committee.

If passed, the bill will continue to the Rules Committee then the state Senate and House. H

emester finals are over, but the idea of them are alive and well.

If you Google “why do finals matter?” the majority of the results are a variation of one answer: they don’t.

Finals are based off an entire semester’s worth of information that tends to go in one ear and out the other.

Students are expected to test on more than four months of information in under two hours. Not only are finals an unrealistic expectation, they also create pointless stress for

students everywhere. There are weeks of studying for two days of unnecessary tests.

Although finals aren’t something anyone enjoys, they do give students an opportunity to increase their grade. Going from a B- to a B is really important for some.

But even with this positive outcome, it can also unreasonably lower grades. Getting a poor grade on a final can drop a person’s overall grade in the class to something that would otherwise stay in a reasonable place. H

This process takes only about two to three minutes and effectively communicates what needs to be done. Even with communication Marianne Nacanaynay becoming easier and more effective Hawkeye Staff as time passes, one problem with communication is that it’s almost completely absent in an academic setting between middle and high school teachers during the transition between eighth and ninth grade.

This lack of communication results in lessons being taught again, whether it’s learning about how to structure an essay, or the types of cell organelles. I’ve even found myself falling asleep in a class because of a lesson being taught that was learned in seventh or eighth grade.

Some, like freshman Madison Balser, believe “lessons are being taught again to go deeper in and to refresh you of what you’ve already learned beforehand. To me, it feels like previous years were just prerequisites to what we’re doing now.”

While repeating lessons may be used as review to elaborate on what may have been previously learned, resources like paper, time and effort are squandered during efforts to teach something that either students have no background knowledge of or something they already understand well.

Biology teacher Adam Welman noted that ineffective communication between middle and high school teachers is simply wasted time.

STEM Expo highlights STEM accomplishments I represent STEM and also want to inform you of a STEM event called STEM expo. It is an event where people gather non-competitively and learn about science, technology, engineering and math. [STEM students] will be put in teams and set up projects to solve a problem.

The following categories will be used; scientific investigations, or lab experiments/field studies. This will be used to answer a scientific question.

It's a nice event because students can learn with other people in a safe environment, all while learning how to deal/ solve a problem that could happen in real life or inside the classroom. STEM shows creativity, thinking Science technology engineering and math (STEM) classes are great way to show off your creativity and thinking.

They teach you how to make decisions for yourself and how to be a leader, which is an important lifelong skill.

Of course, we can’t forget how the classes teach you to invent, engineer and innovate. There are three branches of stem classes to choose from: Aerospace Biotech and Computer Science. Aerospace is for those people who want to delve in the world of aeronautics, rocketry and aerospace engineering. Biotech is for the people who are interested in following a medical science future. Last but not least, Computer Science is for students who want to strive toward computer software and hardware design and development.

Overall, I would recommend taking a STEM class if you’re interested in pursuing a STEM career. Or you could just do it because it’s fun.

Enjoy the Process, It Doesn’t Last Forever

t seemed like it was just yesterday that I was walking through the big red front doors of MTHS as an immature freshman. Now, a crazy fast three years later, I am knocking on the doorstep of adulthood and about to reach the next stage of life in college. It still leaves me in shock how quickly it’s all flown by and the idea of moving onto the next stage of life is still surreal.

The high school experience for me has been something like a Lokai bracelet. You know, one of Irvin Zhang ASB Public Relations Officer those bracelets that at one point, I swear everyone had. The ones that supposedly had water from the snow of Mount Everest, the highest point of the world, and the sand from the dead sea, the lowest point of the world.

There are moments throughout this four year journey where you will feel like you’re on top of Mount Everest and that you’re on top of the world. Likewise, to balance the high moments, you will experience lows that you will feel are lower

than the sand of the dead sea.

The lessons that I’ve learned from those highs and those lows are that if you’re going to be stuck for four years going to high school, why not walk through those hallways with a positive outlook, looking through the lens of optimism and just learn to enjoy the process. Look at high school not as a glass half empty but through the outlook of the glass being half full.

“High school might not be paradise: having to wake up really early, or the daily stress factor, but with every negative, there is a positive to balance it out.”

There is always a light at the end of whatever tunnel you may have found yourself to be stuck in. Everything in this world is temporary. That’s why we have to make the most out of it while it’s still here.

As simple as it sounds, these are the only four years that

you’ll ever be in high school. These are also the only years where you’re growing into the prime years of your life. Why not learn to make the most of every experience during these four short years?

High school might not be paradise: having to wake up really early, or the daily stress factor, but with every negative, there is a positive to balance it out.

Enjoy the football games under the Friday night lights where you get to stand up and scream your heart out along with your peers and not have adults give you a weird eye.

Same goes for basketball and all of the other sports at MTHS. Enjoy the assemblies where you get to love and celebrate the community that you’re in.

Enjoy it all while it’s still here because some day when you’re 40 years old, you may look back at these years and you just may feel a tingle of regret. McCleary and Funding

Washington state lawmakers have recently proposed a bill regarding education funding after being sued by the Network for Excellence in Washington Schools (NEWS) filed a lawsuit in 2007 asking the courts to order the State of Washington to fully fund basic public education.

Edmonds School District (ESD) Superintendent Nick Brossoit is currently the president of NEWS. According to the NEWS website, the suit was brought on behalf of two families: Matthew and Stephanie McCleary and their children, Kelsey and Carter and Robert and Patty Venema and their children, Halie and Robbie.

In the suit, NEWS sought to establish that the state of Washington was in violation of not fully funding education and the constitution.

“State funding is not ample, it is not stable, it is not dependable,” the NEWS website reads.

The lawsuit is also known as the “McCleary case.”

Lawmakers are currently under a court order to take on basic education costs that are being borne unconstitutionally by local school districts.

However, while the Supreme Court has discussed the McCleary case, it seems as if they will be pushing the final decision to the school year of 2017-18, according to Brossoit.

According to ESD Executive Director-Business & Operations Stewart Mhyre, it would take place by September 2017.

At the Jan. 26 ESD School Board Meeting, the members of the School Board discussed the McCleary case.

Director of District Five Diana White called it “confounding” that the state is neglecting funding basic education.

She continued, saying that this procrastination shows a lack of leadership in the state. She mentioned that the bill passed earlier this year on Jan. 20 to keep Washington charter schools open after a September court ruling declared them unconstitutional.

“The legislature sure did fix that charter school problem a while back, why are they ignoring the funding of public education?” White said.

Brossoit called this bill a priority for all of Washington state and said that everyone should be either knowing of the bill or supporting it. He also said the legislature has made a number of promises before in the past regarding public education and has not come through, so he isn’t sure whether or not to trust this time. White also said she doesn’t understand why the state is paying for other things, such as local construction, when she feels most are still asking for basic education to be fully funded.

Trotting around an industrial-looking room with flame torches at the ready and the smell of molten metal in the air, all while avoiding a heated crucible that’s somewhere around the order of 2000 degrees

Fahrenheit: it’s a scene you wouldn’t expect from a high school classroom.

Then again, Jewelry and Metal Design is no ordinary class, taught by no ordinary teacher. It is a specialized program established at MTHS in large part by Mark Walker, who students simply refer to as “Mark” out of familiar respect.

Walker’s background in art and life experiences have equipped him to fill a unique role at Terrace and in the lives of his students.

Where he began Walker first got into jewelry work while attending Edmonds Junior High School,

now the Edmonds Center for the Arts, where he took a jewelry class and his teacher got him excited about the art of jewelry.

After graduating high school at the now non-existent Edmonds High School, Walker joined the U.S. Air Force as a jet engine mechanic in 1978. While there, he was able to work on some art and cultivate a greater

While Walker did not study to become a teacher, his master’s degree allowed him to apply for a conditional teaching certificate, which allows anyone with at least a Master’s degree in a specific subject, in this case sculpting, to teach in a public school.

“They hired somebody that had never set foot in a high school classroom as a teacher.

I had never [taught] one class, period, [and] they hired me,” Walker said.

After Walker was hired, he started off teaching all the basic art classes such as sculpture, ceramics, painting, drawing and even calligraphy.

On top of that, every student pays an art fee of $40 per semester. Walker has maintained that it’s the kids’ money so they should have the ability to spend it, so he gives them the opportunity to choose what tools and materials they want in the class-

“I used to buy the material, but then I thought, well, crap it’s not my money, so the kids that want to spend it, spend it. Other than that I pretty much know what to get,” Walker said.

The birth of a program About eight years ago, Walker’s job came into jeopardy. He was told his conditional teaching certificate had been renewed improperly ever since he started and he would either have to figure something out or go back to school. Walker refused.

“I’m not going [back] to college, I got my masters. [It] ain’t happening… and I thought I was going to get laid off,” Walker said.

But before he left on vacation, he and a friend drew up a proposal to the state for Walker to teach jewelry through the Career

They said he was “dominant, would get mad at the whole class, if one messed up the whole class would get in trouble, [and was] really strict with attendance.” Yet on top of that, and above all, the two said that they really liked him. “[They said] they felt like they weren’t getting this respect that they deserved as young adults, and they didn’t like teachers that didn’t have this respect for them,” Walker said.

The students’ verbal assault left Walker without a chance to respond. It impacted him in a sig-

Marshall has kept art as a hobby of hers and is working towards an Associate of the Arts degree.

Phung has also built a strong relationship with Walker during her years in Jewelry and Metal Design.

“I can’t imagine a Jewelry and Metal program without him.

It wouldn’t be the same at all,” Phung said. “He’s someone I can’t imagine not continuing to talk to, I feel like once I leave Terrace there’s a 100 percent chance I’ll still be in contact with him.”

Above all, there’s a consensus that the Jewelry and Metal Design program just wouldn’t be the same without Mark Walker.

“If Mark’s not here then the class isn’t here,” Marshall said, “Mark is as much a part of this class as blood [is] to a body; it needs Mark.”

Hawkeye went on to help form Pearl Jam. This sculpture will be scanned and made into a seven foot statue. There is also the added chance that the sculpture may go into the Experience Music Project (EMP) Museum in Seattle. For Walker, that’s only the cherry on top.

“It’s not so much about having your name out there; I like to get paid, I like to do work for people, but it’s not about becoming known,” Walker said.

Some of Walker’s art has been put into various galleries, including the Copro Nason Gallery and the Hive Gallery and Studios in California, both of which show work primarily from special effects artists in Hollywood.

And then there’s Walker’s work for Valve Corporation, popularly known for their software and video games, such as the Half-Life and Counter-Strike series. After a few Valve designers took a class at Pratt Art, they asked Walker if he would teach a class at Valve, which he eventually did. This whole time, Walker didn’t have a clue of what Valve was or how big of a corporation it was. “[I] tell a couple [of] high school students, they take a deep breath, and next thing I know these kids are freaking out,” Walker said.

A few years after Walker taught the class for Valve, the company came back to him and asked him to make a trophy for a Dota 2 tournament, another popular Valve video game.

Walker has even received job offers from other companies and businesses, but he hasn’t ever thought twice about leaving MTHS. “They couldn’t pay me enough to leave [this] high school, at all,” Walker said.

The Walker effect Walker has always told his students how much he likes them, but it’s beyond that: he loves them.

“There’s no doubt that he really loves his students, and you can’t help but respond to that,” Phung said.

About 11 years ago, Walker’s son Forrest caught meningitis, a disease which causes inflammation of the brain and spinal cord membranes. Initially it was unclear whether or not he would live

through it, and even after it was determined that he would make it, Forrest remained in the hospital for 32 days.

“To have a son in a bed and watch him just wither away, it was really bad. I wasn’t talking to my mom, wasn’t talking to my dad, could’ve cared less. Me and my wife weren’t talking. There was nothing to talk about,” Walker said. “I’d get up and go to school, and guess who took care of me at school?

You guys.”

Walker recalls his students doing everything from giving him hugs to being good in class, even to his substitute teachers, and just comforting him any way they could.

“I don’t think I ever would have made it if it wasn’t for those kids. So one of the reasons why I love my kids here is because they saved me, and that’s the bottom line,” Walker said.

Walker has taken up an attitude that he uses to enjoy life while making an impact in the lives of others, especially his students.

“If I got a kid that needs help I’ll frickin’ help them; you know the bottom line [is that] in another 30 years I’m going to be dead so what’s the big deal? So I buy a car, so I got payments, what’s the big deal?” Walker said.

Teaching the students about skills they can use and giving them a comfortable place to be creative and just ‘let things go,’ is one of the most special things about Walker’s job.

“I’m there for the kids. These

And hanging around high school students constantly has rubbed off on Walker in a few ways, from his worsening language to his increased immaturity, but he maintains that even through the five classes of jewelry that wear him out, it’s all worth it because it’s for the students.

“You know, when I come home at night I have to take a nap, I’m just brain-dead. And on Fridays when there’s art club? I’ll come home, I’ll sleep for about an hour and a half, I’ll get up and have dinner and I’ll go back and lay down,” Walker said.

After spending some time around Walker, it’s not hard to see how much he loves his job.

“I’m [at school] all the time. I’ve been in there at midnight, I’ve been there at four in the morning. I got my keys and I can come and go as I please: plain spoiled,” Walker said. “They’re going to take me out of there in a box; I’m not going anywhere [and] I’d like to teach as long as I can.” H

Will MTHS change start times?

In an interview with the Hawkeye a year ago, NHHS student Nathan Lowe admitted to using the later start times to stay up until midnight almost every night.

Students at MTHS tend to stay up less to just as long as Lowe.

After interviewing MTHS students in different age groups, a recurring theme was that people in older age groups stayed up later, whether it is due to after school activities, hanging out with friends or procrastination.

“I usually stay up until midnight,” junior Angeline Cartwright said, “I [am] generally out late with Robotics and then do homework. I also am a bit of a procrastinator. ” This can be compared to underclassmen who do not stay up quite as late as their upperclassmen peers.

“On school nights I would usually get to sleep at 10 p.m.,” sophomore Isa Kembel said. “[I am typically up] studying for school and playing soccer late at night.”

Even if the studies show that start times should be moved back, this does not mean that it can be done.

According to a Seattle Times article by reporter John Higgins, there has been opposition from many areas on changing school start times.

These include sports coaches not wanting practices cut short, community groups that don’t want to wait later for gyms and fields as well as before and after school programs that don’t want to change their schedules.

According to Higgins, other school districts have tried and failed, such as the Issaquah School District who tried for two years to see if there was a good way to change bell times before giving up.

“I support later start times. But I also understand that it is a very complicated decision,” Schwab said.

Seattle Public Schools voted to switch to later start times in November, according to the Seattle Times. Effective next year, high schools in the Seattle Public School system will start at 8:30 a.m.

Since then, other districts around the state, including Edmonds School District (ESD), are considering the same thing.

According to University of Washington (UW) researchers, teenagers are not physically ready to fall asleep before 11 p.m. and are not alert or fully awake before 8 a.m.

This conflicts with the start times for MTHS and many other high schools in the ESD that begin at 7:20 a.m., with the exceptions of Scriber Lake High School, which begins at 8:35 a.m. and Edmonds Heights K-12, where the earliest classes start at 9 a.m. High school students are trying to work in school at a time when they should most likely not be awake at all, the UW research shows.

There is an ESD committee looking at what to do about the subject of new start times.

This committee, called Graduates Who Are Ready For Life, is one of ESD’s Strategic Direction Work Groups.

ESD Community Relations Manager Debbie Joyce Jakala said there will be a work group in the spring consisting of parents, community, staff and students that will be looking at the consideration of new school start times.

According to the ESD website, the committee will be looking at High School start times in March, April, and May. At this point, nobody can be entirely sure if this could happen at MTHS and how long it could take.

Nathan Hale High School Students who got less (NHHS), a Seattle Public School, is an example of how later start times than 6 hours of sleep had can work in high schools. In 2003, lower test scores NHHS decided to change its bell schedule to start the school day at 8:40 a.m. and end at 3:10 p.m.

“[Executive ASB] can’t give everyone equal money or everyone as much as they want, even though we want to,” Anderson said.

A majority of the money in MTHS’s budget goes toward “Leadership,” with $8,000 in that budget account. This money is designated for conventions, food and travel expenses, among other things, throughout the year.

Stewart said that while it doesn’t seem like Leadership should receive $8,000, their expenses add up throughout the year. He also said not all of the money put in the Leadership account was entirely used up last year due to fewer conventions attended by ASB and Inter-High.

Stewart also couldn’t understand why everyone always asks questions after the budget is approved. He said these questions should be asked during the all-school budget meeting where anyone can attend.

“Where were they back in April?” Stewart asked, laughing.

“These are questions for then, not now.”

After that meeting, the budget is approved and sent to Schwab for approval. Throughout the following year, Anderson’s and Coombs’ job is to make sure no club or sport spends more money than is in the budget. Anderson said Coombs is “on top of that.”

Every year, the newly elected members of the Executive ASB meet on a Saturday morning with Activities Coordinator Kim Stewart and Secretary Nadine Coombs to lay out the annual budget for the following year.

The meeting begins with the total money available written up on the board. Along with what is currently in the ASB bank account, the estimated income of ASB cards and Homecoming tickets is added.

“You must understand this is all projectional,” Coombs said. “We estimate a lot of the budget.”

Stewart said the change in the vending machine contents has brought a decrease in the budget, due to less students buying products.

According to Coombs, the revenue for vending machines is much lower than years past. Before, ASB could expect $50,000 to $60,000 from vending machine revenue, but for the 2014-15 school year, just $10,000 was hoped for, but even that wasn’t achieved.

Coombs said this was due to students being able to walk to any nearby corner store and buy the products that the vending machines no longer hold.

“That’s what I do,” Executive ASB Treasurer Kaitlyn Anderson laughed.

Stewart said his and Coombs’ jobs are just to administrate the meeting and that they do not step over the officers.

“My job is to keep the principal out of jail,” Stewart said, referring to his responsibility to make to sure the budget doesn’t give any club or sport too much or too little money.

However, Principal Greg Schwab, nor any other administrator, is present during this meeting. It’s completely run by the Executive ASB officers, according to Stew.

The meeting begins at 8 a.m. and doesn’t end until they’re completely finished.

Before this meeting, every club and school sponsored group or sport will request the amount of money they want for the upcoming year and ASB will try to meet their request.

However, not every club or sport can get as much money as they want, according to Anderson. For example, band director Darin Faul requested $4,600 but only received $3,000.

Anderson said this was due to the fact that band tends to go on a lot of trips throughout the year and she and the rest of the Executive ASB considered that band could either cut back on a trip or fund-raise additional money.

The budget also depends on coaches and advisors being able to raise their own money. Anderson mentioned that tennis coach Alberto Ramirez is able to fundraise a lot of money for the tennis team. “[Clubs and sports fundraising their own money] is really helpful. It’s one less thing the school has to worry about,” Anderson said.

How hard a certain club or sports team works and how successful they are is also taken into account when delegating money. Anderson said it’s not a “how good you are” competition, but they do take into account whether or not a sports team will go to state, for example. If everyone believes they will, more money will be given to that team so the students don’t have to pay for everything.

Anderson said she wishes she could give some clubs and sports more money, such as cheer. Anderson sees that cheer works so hard and the members of the team have to spend

their own money on certain things, so she would like to allocate more than just $500 to the program. However, there isn’t enough money in the budget for that.

During that meeting, the officers will have a “healthy debate,” according to Anderson. She said that every member of Executive ASB is allowed to have their own voice heard and opinions shared.

She continued, saying that it’s good there is a meeting to go over the budget and she’s glad ASB is in charge of that process. If just MTHS administrators were to be in charge of the budget, she feels things wouldn’t be as fair as they could be because, as active students at MTHS, the officers are able to vouch for the clubs and sports.

After that initial meeting, the budget is made public during a second meeting with club members and sports teams.

During that meeting, the students are able to see the budget as presented to understand why certain clubs or sports are getting more or less money than requested.

She said this meeting is set up to fix mistakes and answer questions. This meeting is just as important, Anderson said, because there are times that the officers will mistakes in the first meeting and give a lot less money than requested. At the meeting, the club members or sports teams are able to catch those mistakes and the officers are able to supply them with the correct amount of money.

Teenagers’ Attachment to Music

Every day students walk through the halls with their headphones plugged into their ears. Many listen to their music whenever they can during lunch, PASS, independent work time and any other possible break. It’s a growing phenomenon that seems to affect teenagers in particular. In a different light, however, this music is simply a way in which students are showing a piece of their personality without even trying.

High school is the time when most people work to find who they are and who they want to be.

A large contributor to this process of mental growth is music.

A study conducted by the the National Association of Music Merchants Foundation (NAMM) confirms this.

As part of the study, 1,155 teens submitted essays to Teen People magazine discussing why music is important to them.

There were a common thread found in these essays: Music helps teens feel as though they belong and can also be a form of catharsis, serving as a coping mechanism for some. The NAMM study also found that people tend to associate music with studying, hand-eye coordination and concentration.

There are many adult views and statistics that try to explain why teenagers love music. These can be reliable, but members of the younger generations have their own reasons as to why music matters.

For instance, junior Maddy Caiola said that music has helped her make it through hard times.

Bringing black lives matter to terrace

Senior Nabressa Lilly is heartbroken each time she hears of the unjust death of another African-American individual on the news.

“Every time that happens, two lives are lost,” she said.

By this, Lilly means one life of the deceased victim, who is murdered and one life of the killer, who lacks peace of mind and privacy as his or her life is scrutinized by the media.

“You know that their lives are going to be picked apart in the media. Especially if you don’t know the full story. We don’t need to immediately pick apart their lives,” Lilly said.

She said the media should just respect the victim due to their family having just lost them. She said families should be given time to grieve.

When Lilly turns on the TV, she fears seeing her brother on the screen. She fears he may be a victim himself.

Despite this heartbreak, Lilly confessed she was confused by the headlines about Black Lives Matter. She said she didn’t know why people were angry or were protesting.

She later learned Black Lives Matter is a social movement started in response to what was perceived as unjust police brutality, specifically against the black community. The movement seeks to respond to institutionalized racism by raising awareness and spreading the word through protests on the streets of big cities and online social media platforms to share the importance of black lives.

The Black Lives Matter movement started in 2012 following the case of 17-year-old black teenager Trayvon Martin’s murder, according to the Black Lives Matter official website. His killer, George Zimmerman, was acquitted and found not guilty. As a result, communities nationwide organized rallies to protest the verdict and show honor and empowerment for Martin.

Since Martin’s death, there have been a number of high-profile murders of unarmed black people, including Michael Brown in Ferguson, Mo., Eric Garner in New York, Tamir Rice in Cleveland, Ohio and more. The unjust killings of more than 100 unarmed black individuals in 2015 has led more and more people across the United States joining Black Lives Matter in protest, according to a collaboration of data, The Guardian and Mapping Police Violence.

After researching the trending topic and educating herself on what Black Lives Matter is about, Lilly’s perspective changed.

She said she felt really moved because the participants in the movement were responding to more than the conflict at hand.

“They were responding to the inequity of our society rather than just [that] somebody died, ” Lilly said.

With further research into African history, Lilly learned to love her racial identity. She learned of the things that Africans created, such as the salt and gold trade and the kings and queens of Africa. Learning that changed her perspective on herself, she said.

Lilly also has a firm belief that the phrase “Black Lives Matter” is more powerful than “All Lives Matter.”

“Black Lives Matter is not the absence of all other lives [mattering]. The lives of black people matter just as much as every other race,” she said. “Hearing ‘All Lives Matter’ reminds me of that normalization.

Everybody knows that everyone’s lives matter, but why isn’t everyone treated like their lives matter?”

Digging into research on Black Lives Matters acted as a stepping stone to Lilly’s journey to recognizing her beauty and selfworth. Lilly also hopes people can understand the depth of the Black Lives Matter movement that extends further than just the importance of black lives, such as encouraging self-love in the community.

“With Black Lives Matter, the individuals, of course, are important but we have to look deeper than that,” she said. “If I say something offensive to you, we have to look deeper than what I said; we have to look at the connotation that my words had because racism is not something that needs a face. It’s made of ideas and it [means] power.”

Bishop said he believes Black Lives Matter has affected his success in education. If black lives didn’t matter, he wouldn’t be able to be in school. With the movement, he believes black students have more opportunities and freedom with education in high school, Bishop said.

The BSU members hope keeping the discussion alive will lead to change.

Lilly suggests supporting Black Lives Matter by creating a website or Twitter to spread the word and power the movement.

“All it takes is one or two people [to] start a big social movement. Think about the little things you can do to educate people,” she said.

Boxley said he believes the Black Lives Matter movement is bigger than some people think and will make an impact on our future.

“If this is a true movement and if this is a point in history where there’s going to be changes, then this is a part of our history,” Boxley said. H

Annissipour has pounded that mindset into the Hawks. She said that the team spends more time together during the basketball season than some kids do with their own families, which strengthens their individual connections with one another and causes the team to have a bond like no other.

“We all love each other. We fight with each other. We joke with one another. We all have the same goal in mind. The drive is there and we all want to [win] together,” Annissipour said. This ideal that is shared has become transparent among the players as well.

“We’re definitely like a family,” Lambert said. “We haven’t had any drama. She’s made it actually happen and she’s built that chemistry. I care about each and every one of the girls on and off the court, and I know that they all feel the same way.” It’s not all about basketball for Annissipour. She also believes that a big part of her job is to mentor and prepare her team for a life beyond basketball. “[My biggest role as a coach is] sending the girls off into the world. It’s not always about basketball when you coach,” Annissipour said. “Coaches for me were my biggest influences so being a positive role model and teaching them the game of basketball but also life skills, that’s what I want to do.”

Annissipour’s goal heading into her first year of coaching was simply to bring back the foundation. She wanted to get the players and fans at MTHS excited once again for women’s basketball. She wanted the players to enjoy coming onto the court and getting up shots for practice. With those goals in mind, improvement is coming.

Annissipour has been able to reach out and bring younger kids to the gym. When you look at the roster, you see few juniors and seniors, but you do see a bright future as the team is filled with freshmen and sophomores. Annissipour sees that light at the end of the tunnel and believes that the time for Terrace women’s basketball to reach the top will come. “As time goes on, they will start learning together and working together,” Annissipour said. “We will be the next team to watch out for.
