Aloha!

n behalf of Hawaii Youth Symphony, THANK YOU very much for coming to support today’s young musicians. They are on a journey to become the very best that they can be, and with your help, they will.

Whether you’re a family member, friend, or member of the public, every person in the concert hall plays a part in bringing the orchestras’ music to life. Even if we’re not musicians ourselves, to what extent can we inspire musical growth in our youth?

Last spring, when HYS welcomed Midori (a world renowned violinst), she was asked by a parent, “How do we inspire passion in our children?” Midori thought for a moment, then said, “It’s important to show interest, and curiosity, in what they do.

Not just sometimes, but all the time. Passion will grow, as a result.” Similarly, a year ago, the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s Principal Trombonist, Toby Oft, taught us “Practice being inspired… Practice makes permanent!”

As you sit in today’s concert, may I suggest you listen attentively, not just for pretty melodies and things you recognize, but also for details: texture, combinations of instruments, sounds that surprise you or ideas that catch your attention. HYS program books feature fabulous notes by Ruth Komatsu, and they are a great entry point into how to listen to an orchestra concert. Later, ask a musician some questions about what you saw or heard. Engage them in conversation about the music, and let them know if you were really fascinated by it.

Dozens of hours of personal practice, lessons, ensemble rehearsals, sectionals, and more went into the students’ preparation for this concert. Let’s let them know how much we appreciate their musicianship! A big round of applause for the students of Hawaii Youth Symphony, and for you, for celebrating their passion!

About the Youth Symphony

awaii Youth Symphony (HYS) has connected Hawaii’s young people with music education since its incorporation in 1964. We are the only statewide youth music education program, directly serving an average of 650 students, ages 7–18, from over 100 schools statewide.

Our mission is to advance critical and positive links between music study, academic achievement, and social emotional development with programs that service youth through orchestral music education, performance opportunities, and community engagement.

HYS is able to strategically serve any interested student, regardless of previous musical background or ability. We distribute over $30,000 annually in scholarships and financial aid, as well as travel assistance for neighbor island students.

Additionally, HYS reaches neighbor island communities with annual outreach tours that target a different island each season. In total, 20,000+ people attend our 20+ concerts each season!

H

annah Watanabe is a graduate of the University of Hawaii at Manoa, where she received a bachelor’s degree in music education. She is also a former member of the Hawaii Youth Symphony, in which she performed while a student at Kalani High School. She is currently teaching orchestra at Moanalua Middle School, and also taught at Hawaii Baptist Academy, Moanalua High School and Kalani High School. Mrs. Watanabe is a member of the Music Educators National Conference and the Hawaii Music Educators Association.

W

ayne Fanning is a graduate of Hilo High School. He received a Bachelor of Education from the University of Hawaii at Manoa, where he went on to earn a Master of Arts in Music Education. He has performed with the Honolulu Symphony, Royal Hawaiian Band, Kamuela Philharmonic, Kona Chamber Orchestra, Maui Symphony, and the Hawaii County Band.

He has served as a clinician and guest conductor for various middle and high school bands in Hawaii. He has conducted several middle school honor bands as well as the Maui District High School Massed Band. He has been teaching band and orchestra at Niu Valley Middle School since 1998, where the musical ensembles have performed for the Board of Education, the State Legislature, the Inauguration of Governor Abercrombie, and local and national conferences of the Hawaii Music Educators Association and American School Band Directors Association.

About Concert Orchestra

Concert Orchestra is the third most advanced of HYS’s seven orchestras. This year, Concert Orchestra is composed of 96 students, grades 6-12, from 32 schools across Oahu. This season, they will rehearse more than 110 hours and perform 5 concerts. Remi Furuto, a seventh grader at Iolani School, is this season’s concertmaster.

Program Notes Romeo and Juliet Overture It is the timeless story of two star-crossed lovers, Romeo and Juliet! Russian composer Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840–1893), best known today for his ballets Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty and The Nutcracker, completed the score to his Romeo and Juliet Overture when he was only 29, almost the same age Shakespeare was when he finished writing the play. It was Tchaikovsky’s fourth published orchestral piece, and suggested the genius the young composer would become.

The overture begins with a peaceful hymn-like introduction, representing the kindly Friar Laurence, who was friend and advisor to Romeo and Juliet. The music erupts into a faster tempo, depicting the ancient feud between the Montagues and Capulets. This leads to the famous love theme of Romeo and Juliet, that has been used in TV shows, commercials, and Tommy Dorsey’s 1939 big band hit, “Our Love.”

After a return to previous themes, the final section of the overture restates the love theme, transformed into a tragic lament. Concert Orchestra plays Richard Meyer’s arrangement of Romeo and Juliet Overture.

Listen for: • hymn-like theme of Friar Laurence • pizzicato (plucked) strings over Friar Laurence’s theme • Montague and Capulet families fighting • cymbal crashes, depicting sword fights • the familiar love theme

The Huron Carol Canadian Christmas hymn “The Huron Carol” was written in 1642 by Jesuit missionary Jean de Brébeuf in the Huron (Native American of Quebec) language.

He wished to tell the story of Jesus’ birth to the Huron people. The carol’s melody is based on a traditional French folk song. English lyrics were written in 1926 by poet Jesse Edgar Middleton and it became known as “’Twas in the Moon of Wintertime.”

Andrew Wainwright’s arrangement of “The Huron Carol” captures the mood of wintery Canada.

Listen for: • the melody presented first by solo clarinet, then passed on to different instruments • the ending on a major chord (when the piece was in a minor key)

Program Notes Millennium This 1998 National School Orchestra Association composition contest winner was written just before the dawn of the new millennium by Richard Meyer, a full time public school music teacher. Besides teaching, Meyer has composed and arranged over 100 pieces for young ensembles. His arrangements make difficult orchestral pieces accessible to developing musicians. Millennium has three sections. The heroic main theme is stated by the brass, with percussive accompaniment. A contrasting, lyrical middle section follows. The piece ends in an energetic march that includes the majestic restatement of the main theme.

Listen for: • timpani (kettle drum) roll under a solo trumpet call • building anticipation by the lower instruments and percussion • the arrival of the main theme by the brass • the slow middle section, featuring the cellos and then full orchestra • return of the main theme, featuring the different sections

Brahms First Symphony, Fourth Movement German composer Johannes Brahms (1833–1897) is sometimes grouped with Bach and Beethoven as one of the great “Three Bs.” The son of a seamstress and musician, Brahms showed musical talent at an early age. He eventually became popular and influential across many musical genre—piano, chamber music, orchestral and solo voice/choral. Brahms was a devout student of the Bible and described his musical ideas, themes, harmonies and orchestrations as coming directly from God. He wrote four symphonies and Concert Orchestra plays the finale of his first, arranged by Vernon F. Leidig.

Listen for: • the introductory theme stated by the horn, then echoed by the flute • the hymn-like main theme by the strings, then the woodwinds • snippets of the theme, treated in a variety of ways • accelerando (speeding up) • a majestic ending

Give My Regards to George The George in this tribute is none other than George M. Cohan (1878–1942), American entertainer and songwriter from vaudeville and early Broadway days.

A couple of shows have been made about his life—movie Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942) starring James Cagney as Cohan, and a Broadway musical George M! (1968), starring Joel Grey. Cohan’s most famous tunes, out of the 300+ he published, are “Harrigan,” “Yankee Doodle Dandy,” “Mary’s a Grand Old Name,” “Give My Regards to Broadway,” and “You’re a Grand Old Flag,” all included in this Mike Lewis arrangement.

lton Masaki holds a Bachelor of Education degree in Secondary Education with an emphasis in music from the University of Hawaii at Manoa and a Master of Music in Education degree from Boston University. He is currently working on a PhD in Education with an emphasis in technology from the University of Hawaii. Mr. Masaki is the orchestra director at Mid-Pacific Institute where he has been conducting since 2005. He has also taught orchestra at Kamehameha Schools, Iolani School and the Hawaii Youth Symphony Academy String Program. Mr. Masaki also serves as an orchestra clinician for a number of different camps and workshops and manages his own string quartet. Professional affiliations include American String Teacher Association and Association for Education and Communication Technology.

SUSAN OCHI-ONISHI Youth Symphony II, Co-Conductor

S

usan Ochi-Onishi has been with Kaimuki Middle School since 1993, directing the Beginning and Advanced Concert Bands.

Mrs. Ochi-Onishi graduated from the University of Hawaii at Manoa with a Bachelor of Music degree in 1984 and a PDMUS Secondary Music Education degree in 1987. She received a Master of Music degree in 1985 from Northwestern University, where she studied the oboe with Ray Still (Chicago Symphony Orchestra) and the English horn with Grover Schiltz (CSO). Mrs. Ochi-Onishi is a member of the Oahu Band Directors Association and the American School Band Directors Association. Mrs. Ochi-Onishi is proud to be an alumnus of the Hawaii Youth Symphony program, where she served as principal oboist for both the Junior Orchestra (1976–1977, under the direction of Norma Parado), and the Hawaii Youth Symphony (1977–1980, under the direction of Peter Mesrobian and Grant Okamura).

Special Guest KOYUKI ASADA

K

oyuki Asada is an eleven-year old from Tokyo, Japan and began playing the piano at the age of four.

Koyuki has been awarded honors in many competitions including fifth prize at the Japan Classic Music Competition, bronze medal in the Chopin International Piano Competition in Asia, and first prize in the KomabaKai Piano Competition in Tokyo. Most recently, Koyuki was the first prize winner in the solo and concerto divisions of the 2016 Aloha International Piano Competition.

Koyuki recently returned from attending the Jablonski Piano Academy in Sweden and had the opportunity to study with professor Peter Jablonski of the Royal College of Music (London). She also attended the Aloha International Piano Academy in June 2016.

An active performer, Koyuki has appeared in recitals at many prestigious venues and international festivals including the Tokyo Opera City, Fuchu-no-mori Arts Center, Tokyo Kioi Hall, the Misasa Violin Museum, the Ritz-Carlton Osaka, and the Tokyo International Piano Festival.

About Aloha International Piano Festival

The Aloha International Piano Festival (AIPF) presents an annual music festival and competition in Honolulu, including concerts showcasing world-class artists, masterclasses & workshops, and a weeklong Piano Academy.

AIPF offers aspiring pianists the opportunity to share their talents at a prestigious event that fosters a spirit of healthy competition. The concerto division of the Aloha International Piano Competition is held bi-annually and two winners are selected to perform with the Hawaii Youth Symphony. Koyuki Asada, who is featured in tonight’s concert with Youth Symphony II, won the AIPF competition this past June. Kyran Park Adams will be featured on the Youth Symphony I Spring Concert, on April 9, 2017.

Master of Ceremonies DENBY DUNG

D

enby Dung is a Clarinetist and Emcee with the Royal Hawaiian Band, a music instructor at Chaminade University, and the on-camera Host of The Pet Hui on OC16. A graduate of UH Manoa with a Bachelor of Education Degree in Secondary Music, Denby has taught general music, band, and chorus at numerous schools. In 2001, Denby represented her island home at Miss America as Miss Hawaii, promoting her platform “The Music Effect,” exploring the positive effects of music as an essential part of a complete education. She has been featured in the award-winning Louis Vuitton Hawaii International Film Festival trailer, Deal or No Deal Australia, The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, and Hawaii 5-0.

Program Notes Merry Wives of Windsor Overture In his short life, German composer Otto Nicolai (1810–1849) made important contributions to the musical world. He wrote a few successful operas, and founded the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in 1842. But his most significant contribution was an inadvertent one. He was asked to write an opera for the La Scala opera house in Milan based on the life of King Nebuchadnezzar, but rejected the offer.

Young Giuseppe Verdi (1813–1901) took on the task, and the result was Nabucco, his first successful opera. Verdi went on to become the greatest of all Italian opera composers.

Nicolai’s opera Merry Wives of Windsor is based on William Shakespeare’s 1602 comedy of the same name. It features impoverished nobleman Sir John Falstaff, subject of two other Shakespeare plays. The portly scoundrel Falstaff tries to con two wives of Windsor’s leading merchants out of money. The families scheme to get back at him to teach him a lesson.

The overture gives a sneak peek at some of the music to be heard in the opera.

Nicolai died only two months after the premier of Windsor, but this overture remains an oft-played piece in concert halls today. It is traditionally played by the Vienna Philharmonic in its final concert every season as a tribute to founder Nicolai.

Listen for: • the lovely, romantic moonrise in the opening section • the sweet aria (song) of a young mistress • huffing and puffing of the portly, boorish Falstaff • interaction between themes/characters • a rousing finish

Program Notes Piano Concerto, Hob. XVIII/4 No. 4 in G major I. Allegro moderato Koyuki Asada, piano Franz Joseph Haydn (1732–1809) was a prolific Austrian composer, writing over 750 works across all classical music genre. He wrote over 100 symphonies alone. Haydn was known for his sense of humor too. He once woke up sleepy audiences with a sudden loud chord in his “Surprise” symphony. He also hinted to his employer Prince Nikolaus Esterházy that the overworked musicians needed a vacation. He wrote the “Farewell” Symphony (No. 45) where the musicians leave the stage one by one, leaving only two violinists on the stage at the end of the piece.

Haydn composed 11 concertos for keyboard. The earlier ones, such as Concerto No. 4, were written for harpsichord, as the piano was still being developed and improved. His later works were intended for piano, with their greater dynamic markings.

A Christmas Festival Leroy Anderson (1908–1975) was an American composer of short, light concert pieces, many of which were introduced by the Boston Pops Orchestra under the direction of Arthur Fiedler. A Christmas Festival is a medley of popular Christmas carols: “Joy to the World,” “Deck the Halls,” “God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen,” “Good King Wenceslas,” “Hark! the Herald Angels Sing,” “Silent Night,” “Jingle Bells,” and “O Come, All Ye Faithful.”

Program Notes Star Wars: The Force Awakens American composer John Williams (b. 1932) is considered to be one of the greatest film composers of all time. His most notable works are scores for the films Star Wars, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, E.T., Jaws, Superman, Schindler’s List, the Indiana Jones series, three Harry Potter films, and Jurassic Park. Williams has also composed works for four Olympic Games and several television shows. He served as principal conductor of the Boston Pops Orchestra from 1980 to 1993.

The Force Awakens (2015) is Episode VII, the latest installment in the Star Wars saga. The story takes place 30 years after Return of the Jedi (1983), and introduces the character Kylo Ren. He is the son of Han Solo and Leia Organa, and nephew of Luke Skywalker, who were the heroes of the original 1977 Star Wars film.

Sean O’Loughlin’s arrangement of Star Wars: The Force Awakens features the Star Wars Main Theme, Rey’s Theme, March of the Resistance, The Jedi Steps and Finale.

H

enry Miyamura conducts Hawaii Youth Symphony’s top orchestra, Youth Symphony I, and has been HYS’s music director and conductor for nearly three decades. Joining HYS in the early ’80s, Maestro Miyamura provided the artistic vision that has shaped HYS’s programs and led to tremendous growth of the organization. Miyamura also founded and directs HYS’s summer program, the prestigious Pacific Music Institute.

Maestro Miyamura recently retired from the University of Hawaii, where he conducted the UH Symphony Orchestra. His numerous credits include 14 years as band director at McKinley High School; principal clarinetist with the Honolulu Symphony; and membership in the Eastman Wind Ensemble, the Hillel Chamber Concert Orchestra and the Rochester Philharmonic. Miyamura also served as assistant conductor for the Honolulu Symphony, which gave him the opportunity to conduct concerts featuring artists such as Wynton Marsalis, trumpet; David Bar-Ilan, piano; Joshua Bell, violin; and Harvey Pittel, saxophone, as well as Hawaii entertainers.

Miyamura was named winner of the prestigious 2001 Alfred Preis Award by the Hawaii Alliance for Arts Education for his lifetime commitment to arts and education in Hawaii. Miyamura received a Bachelor of Music degree and a Performer’s Certificate from the Eastman School of Music, as well as a Master of Music degree from Western Washington University.

About Youth Symphony I

Youth Symphony I (YSI) is the most advanced of HYS’s seven orchestras, and is one of the finest youth symphonies in the country. In its history, YSI has performed with renowned guest artists and was a Finalist in the Na Hoku Hanohano awards. This year, the orchestra has the special honor of being selected to perform on From The Top, a nationallybroadcast radio show.

For the 2016–2017 season, Youth Symphony I is composed of 100 students, grades 9–12, from 27 public, home, and independent schools across Oahu and Maui. They will rehearse more than 130 hours and perform 10 concerts on Oahu and Hawaii islands. Megan Uchida, a senior home school student, is this season’s concertmaster.

Program Notes Semiramide Overture Have you ever crammed to do an assignment or project? That was a normal thing in creating an opera in Gioachino Antonio Rossini’s (1792–1868) day. From the time a contract for an opera was signed until opening night, a composer was given about a month to complete the project. That included finding a libretto (script), composing the music, supervising rehearsals and conducting the first performances. The Italian composer Rossini completed the music for his two-act opera Semiramide in just 33 days.

Composers of the day often wrote generic overtures that could be used to open any of their operas, but the overture for Semiramide included musical highlights from the opera itself, making it unsuitable for use for any other opera. The audience was aurally treated to a preview of things to come, similar to today’s audiences experiencing the opening credits of a movie. This overture’s lasting popularity makes it one of the most frequently performed pieces today.

Listen for: • a stirring introduction • lengthy opening section, featuring the horn section, woodwinds, and pizzicato (plucked) violins • light, joyous melodies, despite this opera being based on a tragedy (Voltaire’s Semiramis) • a section featuring the woodwinds over marching strings • “Rossini crescendo” (music gradually getting louder)—a long, gradual crescendo of an unvarying rhythm, building slowly toward a climax—a trademark technique of Rossini

Sinfonische Metamorphosen (Symphonic Metamorphosis)

I. Allegro III. Andantino IV. Marsch Rejection was a blessing in disguise. In 1940, Paul Hindemith (1895 – 1963) composed ballet music for a dance company at the request of its director Léonid Massine. The music was rejected due to “artistic differences” between both parties. Three years later, Hindemith developed the music, originally written for piano, and it became Symphonic Metamorphosis, his most popular orchestral work.

Hindemith was a German composer who eventually became an American citizen. He based Metamorphosis on themes from 19th century German composer Carl Maria von Weber’s piano duets.

Listen for: • a constant, driving beat by the full orchestra • the middle section, featuring the oboe and other woodwinds • woodwind solos to open the slow 3rd movement • serpentine melodies in the middle section

“Polovtsian (Polovetsian) Dances” from Prince Igor He was a doctor and chemist by day and a part-time composer by night, and he still made important contributions to all three fields. Alexander Borodin (1833–1887) was a member of, The Mighty Five, a group of Russian composers that included Modest Mussourgsky, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, César Cui, and Mily Balakirev. The group’s focus was to produce Russian nationalistic music.

Borodin set his opera Prince Igor in the 12th century where Prince Igor and his son are captured by a tribe of nomadic Polovtsy, led by Khan Konchak. At the end of Act II, Polovsty maidens and slaves dance to entertain the Kahn and his captives. At the time of Borodin’s death, the opera was unfinished. His fellow Mighty Five member Rimsky-Korsakov completed it.

Borodin’s music was adapted for the musical Kismet. Three songs from the show are from the “Polovtsian Dances,“ the most popular song being “Stranger in Paradise.”

Listen for: • Borodin’s use of Orientalism (music depicting Eastern cultures), by using different modes and scales • the “Stranger in Paradise” melody by oboe and English horn (alto oboe) • dances of different styles and tempi (speeds) • the return of earlier melodies/dances, interwoven for the finale

Selections from Les Misérables Les Misérables (translated from French as “The Miserable Ones”) is a novel (1862) by French author Victor Hugo. Les Misérables is known to many through its numerous stage and screen adaptations. In 1980, a musical of the same name opened in Paris.

It has gone on to become one of the most successful musicals in history. The music was composed by Claude-Michel Schönberg (b. 1944), with libretto by Alain Boublil.

In 1985, an English language version opened in London. In 1987, the musical debuted on Broadway. This medley includes “At The End Of The Day,” “I Dreamed A Dream,” “Master Of the House,” “On My Own,” and “Do You Hear The People Sing?”

oan Doike directed orchestras in the HYS program for fourteen years prior to moving to Indiana. While in Indiana, she taught at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music Pre-College String Academy. Ms. Doike currently teaches the HYS Beginning Strings and String Orchestra Ensemble classes, and gives private violin lessons. As a student, Ms. Doike was a violinist in HYS while at Kaimuki Intermediate and Kalani High schools and she continued on to receive her Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Hawaii. Her two daughters, niece, and nephew are also HYS alumni and are currently pursuing master’s degrees in music.

Intermediate String Ensemble & Concert String Orchestra, Conductor

A

n alumnus of HYS, Chad Uyehara conducts the Intermediate String Ensemble and Concert String Orchestra. Mr. Uyehara received his Master’s of Music in Viola Performance and Music Education from Northwestern University. He earned his Bachelor’s of Music in Violin Performance, Bachelor’s of Arts in French, and membership in Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Hawaii. He is also a graduate of Punahou School. Mr. Uyehara has performed on violin and viola with the Las Vegas Philharmonic, Desert Springs Chamber Orchestra, and the Honolulu Symphony. He has taught orchestra with the Clark County School District in Nevada, the Las Vegas Youth Philharmonic, and the Hawaii Department of Education at Kalani High School, Kaimuki Middle School, and Moanalua Elementary. Mr. Uyehara served as interim conductor for the University of Hawaii at Manoa Symphony Orchestra during the 2014–2015 school year. Currently, he teaches orchestra at at Saint Andrew’s Priory and Hanahaouli School, and maintains a private violin/viola studio of thirty students. Professional affiliations include American String Teachers Association, National Association for Music Education, Suzuki Association of the Americas, Music Teachers National Association, and the American Viola Society.

About the Academy String Program

The Academy String Program is composed of four string ensembles with entry points for students of beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels. The Academy provides children ages 8 and up the opportunity to learn an orchestral string instrument (violin, viola, cello, or bass), develop fundamental skills necessary for musical success, and perform in concert settings. Students perform twice per season, and also participate in special workshops taught by professional musicians and other music educators.

This season’s Academy students represent 66 public, independent, and home schools.

During the summer, the Academy offers Summer Strings, daily instruction over a five-week session for beginning and intermediate players. All Academy classes are held at the Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii’s Spalding Clubhouse.

About Music in the Clubhouse

Music in the Clubhouse is a joint initiative of Hawaii Youth Symphony and the Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii. Now in its eighth year, Music in the Clubhouse features low-cost programming designed to fill gaps left by cuts to arts programs in public education. Classes take place on weekdays (afterschool) at Spalding Clubhouse in McCully/Moʻiliʻili.

The classes are open to any interested students. Children ages 7-9 may participate in the general music class, Music4Kids, while children ages 10-13 may participate in Clubhouse Band. All music, instruments, and supplies are included. A defining feature of the program is that no prior experience is required, and no tryouts or auditions are necessary! Nearly 98% of the operating costs are subsidized by HYS, with thanks to grants from multiple foundations and donors. Signups for the Music in the Clubhouse program begin in August of each year.

This year’s Music in the Clubhouse students represent 19 public, home, and independent schools.

Listen and Learn

T

hrough private and governmental support, HYS produces 7 educational “Listen & Learn” concerts each December. Inspired, in part, by Leonard Bernstein’s popular Young People’s Concerts with the New York Philharmonic, the HYS “Listen & Learn” Concerts give students the opportunity to share their passion for classical music with other children.

Concerts are narrated by lively emcees, scripted by music educators, and designed with DOE Hawaii Content & Performance Standards III (HCPS III) in mind.

The DOE endorses the concerts, as learning opportunities for both the student performers, and those in the audience.

The concerts are FREE and open to any DOE, independent, or home school on Oahu (and a rotating neighbor island). HYS sends a general announcement in early September of each year, and reservations are taken on a first-come, first-served basis. On average, nearly 12,000 children experience the magic and majesty of a full symphony orchestra and have a concert hall experience!
