Music is an art form built off communication: musicians must not only conquer the obstacles of notes and rhythms in order to inspire an audience, they must work to listen to each other; they must react to each other at every turn of phrase. It could have been an easy choice to stop the music after the COVID-19 pandemic began, but we at the Hawaiʻi Youth Symphony kept going. We are so proud to offer you this program as a representative of the passion we feel for our mission to bring the best out of every music student.

It is with a special joy that we welcome you to enjoy this hour of music making with the state of Hawaiʻi's finest youth muscians and acclaimed guest artists Jake Shimabukuro and Amy Hānaialiʻi.

About the Hawaii Youth Symphony

H

awaii’s only state-wide music education organization, HYS serves students ages 7–18 of all skill levels and every economic background, brought together from more than 100 schools across the islands. Since 1964, the nonprofit has advanced its mission of developing youth to their fullest potential through orchestral music, offering diverse programs including general music, string and band classes, jazz, symphony orchestras, summer intensives, and more. Contributions from the celebration will go toward breaking down barriers to music education including financial hardship, access to qualified music teachers, the high cost of instruments, and expanding the reach of HYS in rural and under-resourced communities.

Among the largest youth symphony organizations in the country, HYS ensures that no interested child is turned away from a quality music education because of financial need and awards over $50,000 a year through its financial aid program. HYS also offers assistance for registration fees, instrument rentals, private lessons and air and surface travel for neighbor island students.

During the pandemic, HYS never stopped making music, and pivoted to a virtual format—online sectionals, workshops, masterclasses, recitals by renowned guest artists, and virtual concerts. Team HYS is composed of more than a dozen employees and has a roster of nearly a hundred artistfaculty, all of whom are expressly dedicated to music education and its transformative opportunities for Hawaii’s youth.

Featured Artist JAKE SHIMABUKURO

O

ver the past two decades, Jake Shimabukuro has proved that there isn’t a style of music that he can’t play. While versatility for any musician is impressive, what’s remarkable about Shimabukuro’s transcendent skills is how he explores his seemingly limitless vocabulary – whether it’s jazz, rock, blues, bluegrass, folk or even classical – on perhaps the unlikeliest of instruments: the ‘ukulele. Responding to the urgent calls of his fervent imagination, the Hawai’i-born virtuoso has taken the ‘ukulele to points previously thought impossible, and in the process he’s reinvented the applications for this tiny, heretofore underappreciated four-string instrument, causing many to call him “the Jimi Hendrix of the ‘ukulele.”

Humbly, the good-natured musician, who first picked up the ‘ukulele at the age of four, says, “From the time I started playing, I was just doing what came naturally and what felt like fun. I love all types of music, so I never thought, ‘Oh, I can’t play that on the ‘ukulele.’” He laughs and adds, “If you don’t know the rules, you don’t need to follow them, and then nothing can hold you back.”

Shimabukuro’s incredible journey has taken him from local phenom to YouTube sensation, from playing tiny clubs to headlining the world’s most prestigious concert venues like the Hollywood Bowl, Lincoln Center and the Sydney Opera House. He’s performed on the biggest TV shows and has released a string of award-winning, chart-topping albums. Just recently, he was nominated by President Joe Biden to serve as a Member for the National Council on the Arts.

Amy has played for the Dalai Lama, two inaugural balls in Washington, D.C. for President Obama and the first entertainer ever to perform in the Great Hall of the People in Tiananmen Square, China. After obtaining a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts from United States International UniversitySchool of Performing and Visual Arts in San Diego, Amy spent time with her paternal grandmother, International Hawaiian superstar – Jennie Nāpua Woodd.

Undoubtedly her world-famous falsetto training and strict pronunciation lessons gave Amy beloved respect of Hawaiian Culture and Music, making her grandmother Nāpua one of her most influential people in her life.

Woodd, one of the original Royal Hawaiian girls in Waikīkī or Tūtū as Amy affectionately calls her, helped shape the entertainment scene of Hawai’i as a Kumu Hula/Choreographer in Hollywood, Las Vegas, and NYC. Woodd worked on every Pacific-themed motion picture in the 1940’s and 1950’s and her choreography defines that cinematic genre. Also, Woodd while performing on Broadway and the Lexington Hotel in New York City, Tūtū met Amy’s grandfather Lloyd B. Gilliom.

He himself a musician who played trumpet and steel guitar with the likes of Sammy Kaye, Tommy Dorsey and other notable bands of that era—joined Woodd to build a rich tradition of Hawaiian Culture on both coasts of America.

Amy sits on 3 Native Boards, Native Arts and Cultures Foundation, Hawai‘i Academy of Recording Arts and Hui O Wa‘a Kaulua.

Aside from the music community, Amy has garnered accolades from the Pacific Business News as their “40 under 40 Business Person of the Year” award, recognizing not only her talent but also her business acumen needed to market her talent.

Recently, she has launched 3 vintages of wine under her wine company Hānaiali‘i Wines with her 2013 Merlot earning a 90 from Wine Spectator, The LA Wine Festival and 5 Gold medals. Amy’s next selection of wines will be available for purchase in December 2019.

yan Wilson is the director of marketing and creative services at Hawaii News Now. He spent a decade working on Sunrise as executive producer and as a producer. He has also worked as a reporter and photographer in Great Falls, Montana and Colorado Springs, Colorado.

had Asuncion is the Digital Operations Manager for Hawaii News Now and has worked in the digital media industry for over 20 years. Originally a designer by trade, Chad has extensive experience in new media technologies, product development and digital advertising. Prior to Hawaii News Now, Chad worked for media companies The Star-Bulletin and The Honolulu Advertiser.

rin Yamada is a marketing professional with over 28 years of media experience working with businesses both large and small.

Hosts ASHLEY NAGAOKA

A

shley Nagaoka anchors Hawaii News Now's "First at Four" newscast at 4 p.m. on KHNL and the popular midday round-up show, "This Is Now" at 12 p.m., on KHNL and HNN's streaming platforms.

After graduating from college, Ashley went on to become a news reporter and producer at KGMB, Honolulu's CBS affiliate.

The Kauai-native then moved across the country, to Washington, D.C., where she worked as press secretary and spokeswoman for then-U.S. Rep. Colleen Hanabusa.

After five years on Capitol Hill, Ashley moved back to Hawaii and joined Anthology Marketing Group, one of Hawaii's top marketing and communications firm in Honolulu. There, she managed public affairs clients in tourism, government, energy, land development, and agriculture.

Ashley re-joined KGMB, this time as a member of the Hawaii News Now team, in 2017.

She is a board member of the Domestic Violence Action Center, the Hawaii Food Bank Kauai Branch, and Make-A-Wish Hawaii's Young Leader Board. Ashley is also part of the Pacific Century Fellows and a member of the U.S.-Japan Council's Emerging Leaders Program.

BILLY V

B

illy V has spent more than a decade as the Entertainment Reporter for Hawaii News Now. He’s a 35-year veteran in the broadcast industry, spending 30 years on the radio. He has hosted dozens of television events such as Miss Hawaii, Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards, Merrie Monarch Festival. He has also severed as emcee for UH Athletics, NFL Pro Bowl, Hawaii Bowl and more. Plus, he has acting chops, appearing on shows like Baywatch Hawaii & Hawaii Five-0. Billy V is a proud graduate of Konawaena High School and the University of Hawai‘i.

Youth Symphony I, Conductor

J

oseph Stepec currently serves as the director of the Hawaii Youth Symphony's Symphony Program. Under his tenure, the orchestas have collaborated with the Hawaiʻi Symphony Orchestra and countless guest artists; the organizations top orchestra, Youth Symphony I, has been featured in concert on outer islands and most notably during the Nā Mele broadcasts reaching thousands of households across the state of Hawaiʻi.

A passionate arts educator, Mr. Stepec has been featured in orchestral residencies throughout various universities in the United States and abroad. In addition to his work leading youth ensembles, he is also the Music Director of the University of Hawaiʻi Symphony Orchestra, the UHSO, a mixed-major collegiate ensemble that has been featured in concert on stages across the island of Oʻahu and most notably in All Nippon Airway's Inaugural Honolulu Music Week.

In addition to leading orchestras, Mr. Stepec also maintains an active and varied teaching schedule. He teaches a private conducting studio and teaches a popular violin studio class for non-music majors at the University of Hawaiʻi. He has worked reguarly with the Hawaiʻi Symphony Orchestra in a variety of concerts and settings.

CHAD UYEHARA

Director, Academy String Program

A

n alumnus of HYS, Chad Uyehara conducts the Intermediate String Ensemble and Concert String Orchestra, and has recently been appointed Academy String Program Director. He received his Master’s of Music in Music Education and Viola Performance from Northwestern University where he studied viola with Roland Vamos.

He earned his Bachelor’s of Music in Violin Performance, studying with LaVar Krantz, Bachelor’s of Arts in French, and membership in Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. Additional studies include the Brevard Music Center Summer Institute and Festival, the Conductor’s Workshop of America, Mimi Zweig’s Retreat for Violin and Viola Teachers, Suzuki Association of the Americas teacher training, and Paul Rolland String Pedagogy certification.

Mr. Uyehara has performed on violin and viola with the Las Vegas Philharmonic, Desert Springs Chamber Orchestra, and the Honolulu Symphony. He currently performs with the Maui Pops Orchestra, with local music theater companies, and as part of a violin-piano duo. He has taught orchestra for the Clark County School District in Nevada, the Las Vegas Youth Philharmonic, the Hawai‘i Department of Education at Kalani High School, KaimukĪ Middle School, and Moanalua Elementary, Hanahau‘oli School, and St. Andrew’s Schools. Mr. Uyehara also served as interim conductor for the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa Symphony Orchestra during the 2014–2015 school year. Currently, he directs orchestras for the Hawaii Youth Symphony, the Pacific Music Institute, and Moanalua Middle School. He also maintains a private violin and viola studio.

Mr. Uyehara serves as president of the Hawai‘i chapter of the American String Teachers Association (HASTA), and organizes the HASTA Junior Festival Orchestra. Other professional affiliations include the Paul Rolland String Pedagogy Society, Suzuki Association of the Americas, Music Teachers National Association, National Association for Music Education, and the American Viola Society. He has been honored with the 2018 Teacher of the Year award from the Hawaii Music Teachers Association.

DEAN TABA

Director of HYS Jazz & Advanced Contemporary Ensemble

A

highly regarded studio and freelance musician, Dean Taba began his musical studies on the piano at the age of 6 and played french horn in the Hawaii Youth Symphony. It was a desire to play in the high school jazz band that introduced him to the bass and improvised music. After extensive studies at the Berklee College of Music in Boston and a refinement of his skills on both the acoustic and electric bass, Dean relocated in 1984 to Los Angeles to become one of its most in demand musicians.

Also a respected clinician and educator (Los Angeles Music Academy, Musician’s Institute, Cal-Poly Pomona, Grove School of Music) Dean has recently performed/recorded with Jeff Lorber, David Benoit, Mark Murphy, Jake Shimabukuo, Andy Summers, Sadao Watanabe, The San Francisco Symphony, Hiroshima, Rick Braun, The American Jazz Institute Orchestra, Dave Koz, Jeff Richman, Pauline Wilson, The Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra, Daniel Ho, Bill Watrous, and many others as well as playing on countless CDs, TV shows, and movie soundtracks.

ichael-Thomas Foumai (b. 1987, Honolulu, Hawai‘i) is a composer of contemporary concert music and is the recipient of the Fromm Foundation Commission from Harvard University, Morton Gould Young Composers Award, BMI Composer Award and the MTNA Distinguished Composer of the Year Award. His orchestral works have been performed by the Minnesota Orchestra, Milwaukee Symphony, Buffalo Philharmonic, Hawaiʻi Symphony and the American Composers Orchestra at Carnegie Hall. Dr. Foumai holds degrees from the Universities of Hawaii and Michigan. He is a member of the faculty of the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa Music Department in the area of Theory & Composition.

year after the great eastern Japan earthquake, Mr. Sukenori (founder of Dosanko JO) attended a performance by a junior orchestra in Iwate, Hanamaki—another city with severe earthquake damage. Mr. Sukenori was inspired and established the Dosanko Junior Orchestra in Hokkaido. The Dosanko Junior Orchestra has since interacted with many overseas orchestra groups from China, the Czech Republic, Thailand, and now Hawaii!

International Vision for Nā Mele 2021

rom the grounds of the stunning Halekulani, talented HYS students, ages 8-18 from across the state, are featured performers. Together with ukulele virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro and Hawaii’s top-selling female vocalist of all time, Amy Hānaiali‘i, they will join Junior Orchestras from Hawaii’s sister cities in Japan, the Ukulele Junior Orchestra from Kanazawa, and the Pacific Music Instituteʻs Ukulele Workshop, made possible through the magic of television and collaboration with Hawaii Tourism Japan. Beyond a festive evening, Nā Mele will benefit all HYS programs and financial aid funds, advancing the nonprofit’s vision to Make Music a Right for all young people in Hawaii.

In 2020, in partnership with Hawaii News Now, HYS hosted a televised Nā Mele gala for the first time. Initially developed as a creative response to challenges of performing in the pandemic and as a celebration of the universal language of music, it also offered a means for the annual event to reach global audiences. This year’s event, under the direction of Maestro Joseph Stepec, HYS Director of Orchestral Activities, Dean Taba, Director of HYS Jazz, and Chad Uyehara, Director of the HYS Academy String Program, will keep the music playing in a joyful new extravaganza. Honoring the special connection between Hawaii and Japan, junior orchestras from Ehime, Dosanko, and Naha will also perform a special composition commemorating Hawaii’s Queen Liliuokalani from HYS alumnus and acclaimed composer Michael-Thomas Foumai.

“Music connects us all, and if the last two years have taught us anything, it is that even when we need to physically distance, we are still stronger together and wonderfully buoyed by our shared experiences,” said President of Hawaii Youth Symphony, Randy Wong. “Playing music, at any level, fosters confidence, resilience, and self-development in young people—so vital to success and joy in life. Together with the support of audiences watching this exhilarating Nā Mele, we can help ensure that the power and beauty of music education is available to every child in Hawaii. The young people featured in these performances are all exceptional musicians and it’s incredible what they can do together.

Our Vision: Make Music a Right

W

ith a bold vision to Make Music A Right, Hawaii Youth Symphony is breaking down the barriers to access to music education. As the only state-wide music education organization in Hawaii, we aspire to put an instrument into every child’s hand, and bring the power and beauty of music education into every community. Too many children are currently denied the opportunity to make music, and HYS is committed to partnering with underserved communities to bring the joy of music making to where they live.

Since 1964, HYS has provided low-cost music programs for young people, and is the only venue where children from across the state can meet and play together in an orchestral ensemble. Currently, students from over 130 schools and nearly every island participate in HYS programs. Offering financial aid, neighbor island airfare, and merit-based scholarships to ensure state-wide accessibility, HYS welcomes every child without consideration of family financial capacity.

Serving Our Community

Hawaii Youth Symphony students collaborate to take their love of music into their communities. Performed ‘for youth, by youth,’ HYS “Listen & Learn” School Concerts serve as wonderful entry points to music education. Thanks to a partnership with Hawai‘i State Department of Education, HYS reaches some 12,000 young people every year through these FREE concerts, introducing children across the state to the magic of orchestral music. HYS students frequently perform at museums, libraries, non-profits, and other community-oriented events. These concerts instill and nurture service, leadership, and passion in our student volunteers.

Music in the Clubhouse

F

or over a decade, HYS has partnered with the Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii to provide low-cost, entry-level classes to Clubhouse youth. Made possible through the generosity of private foundations, public support, and contributions to HYS, the classes provide free instrument loans, sheet music, and instruction on a weekly basis throughout the school year. More than 5,000 Honolulu-region youth (largely from Mo‘ili‘ili, McCully, Ala Wai, Pauoa, and Nu‘uanu) have had a chance to play music, thanks to our classes at the Spalding Clubhouse.

In 2019, HYS launched its Music in the Clubhouse initiative at the Nānākuli Clubhouse along the Wai‘anae coast. Carnegie Hall recognized HYS as Hawaii’s first recipient of a PlayUSA grant, a program that supports a wide range of instrumental music education projects across the nation, all with a specific interest in reaching low-income and underserved students on a local level. HYS also works with string students at Kaunakakai Elementary on Moloka‘i, and provides travel reimbursements and scholarships to Symphony Program and PMI students from Kaua‘i, Maui, and Hawai‘i islands.

Academy & Super Strings Program

P

roviding a welcoming, accessible, and affordable environment for students to both start and advance their music journeys, the HYS Academy String Program has existed since our organization’s inception and was the brainchild of conductor Harold Higa. Today, led by conductor and Academy String Program Director Chad Uyehara, the Academy’s students represent more than 60 public, independent, and home schools. In proud partnership with Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii, the Academy offers children ages 8 and older the opportunity to play violin, viola, cello, or string bass in group settings that emphasize the fundamental skills necessary for musical success. Children progress onward to the HYS Symphony Program and Pacific Music Institute, and many also become leaders in their schools’ orchestras.

Beyond orchestra rehearsals, Academy students are also coached in workshop settings by incredible music educators who include school orchestra directors and professional musicians. Do you know an aspiring young musician? Beginning students can start completely from scratch without any prior experience or instruments. Symphony Program

he flagship program for local young musicians, our Symphony Program is renowned as Hawaii’s most prominent orchestral training platform for middle and high school-aged students. Established initially as a single ensemble in 1964, our Youth Symphony Orchestra (as it was then known) connected Honolulu students in harmony and camaraderie. In the decades following, YSO expanded to three full symphony orchestras with students from nearly every island.

To become a member of the Symphony Program, students must pass an entrance audition. Additionally, members are held to high personal and musical standards and are expected to play in their school’s band or orchestra programs, take private lessons, or participate in other musical activities.

Jazz Program

relatively new HYS program, HYS Jazz celebrates its third anniversary this year! Under the leadership of HYS Jazz Director Dean Taba, and with the support of our dedicated faculty including Dean, Noel Okimoto, and Ryan Howe, HYS Jazz offers Intermediate Contemporary Ensemble and Advanced Contemporary Ensemble for students 14-18.

Advancing Hawaii Youth Symphony’s ongoing commitment to making music education accessible to all students, HYS Jazz also recently launched its Beginning Improvisation Group for ages 12 and up. HYS Jazz students are taught the skills necessary to play as a rhythm section, accompany others, and improvise. We are proud to have guitarists, keyboardists, drummers, and saxophonists among our student body, though HYS Jazz is a wholly inclusive environment and welcomes students from all orchestral instruments.

HYS Jazz frequently collaborates with highly-respected artists, and in its short history has already performed with Jake Shimabukuro, trumpeter Eric Miyashiro, saxophonist Steve Treseler, vocalists Shari Lyn and John Valentine!

Though the focus of HYS Jazz is music performance, many entrepreneurial facets of being a professional musician or working in the music industry are addressed throughout the year. Pacific Music Institute (PMI)

or over 30 years, HYS’ Pacific Music Institute has been the defining summer musical experience for thousands of aspiring young musicians.

A two-week summer intensive, PMI brings together a core of renowned professionals, members of the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra and Royal Hawaiian Band, internationally acclaimed soloists, outstanding string quartet, jazz & studio musicians, and more.

Ukulele Workshop

E

xclusive to Pacific Music Institute, the Ukulele Workshop debuted the summer of 2021 at the Hawai‘i Convention Center. Students entering 6th–12th grade, and graduating seniors, were instructed first-hand by Jake and Bruce Shimabukuro during this 4-day program. Participants hailed from across O‘ahu, from Kapolei to Kāne‘ohe, and even from Seattle!

Topics ranged from fretboard navigation and achieving a good tone, to learning how to practice and improvising over a 12-bar blues with basic music theory concepts and chord substitutions. The program culminated with a socially-distanced performance for family & friends and a performance video that aired in the Ukulele Festival of Hawai‘i.

The Ukulele Workshop was so popular that it will have its encore during PMI 2022!
