A MESSAGE FROM ANNA In 1883, King Kalakaua and 350 concerned citizens organized what became the Hawaiian Humane Society to advocate on behalf of companion and working animals, and raise awareness about the proper care, feeding and humane treatment of animals. In the last 138 years we’ve moved locations, changed, grown and adjusted focus, but our north star has been our commitment to making O’ahu a better place for animals and the people who love them. As we’ve recommitted ourselves to this mission over the last couple of years, we know that actions matter more than words, and that change comes through bringing people together and taking bold, transformative action on this issue that we all care so deeply about – the welfare of animals in our community. As we celebrate 138 years of service this July, we look back on a year of progress and change. On May 5 we broke ground on our campus in Ewa; a 5-acre facility that will bring much needed programs and services to our West O’ahu community. This year we also worked with our legislators and community advocates to pass three key animal welfare bills as well as to support two other bills to reduce animal cruelty that passed as well. We’ve grown our shelter staff, bringing additional expertise and depth in areas that are key to saving lives.

We’re looking to the future with excitement and many more plans to expand access, provide support where it’s most needed, increase our educational offerings and most importantly, to continue to make positive impacts for the animals and people of O‘ahu. From the very beginning we have been a community organization, and one of the key pillars of delivering for the animals is the robust participation of the community in our efforts. Donors, volunteers, community partner organizations, partner agencies and the media are all showing up with us as we work to make Hawai’i a great place to be a pet. Breaking ground on a new chapter in a 138-year history of service On Wednesday, May 5, Hawaiian Humane embarked on the next phase of our 138-year history of service by breaking ground on a second permanent location in Ewa! Members of the Hawaiian Humane board of directors, civic and community leaders, special guests, and employees gathered on the 5-acre site of our soonto-be campus in West O‘ahu to participate in a traditional Hawaiian blessing and turning of the soil. The celebration marked the turning of a page to a new chapter in our 138-year history of service and compassionate care.

Hawaiian Humane has a deep and sustained commitment to the quality of service it provides to animals and residents and has planned wisely as it extends services to West O‘ahu. More than 60 percent of

West O‘ahu residents have pets, which is expected to increase over time. Additionally, our Mō‘ili‘ili campus is difficult to access for a large percentage of O‘ahu's population who live in West O‘ahu and other areas outside of Honolulu's urban core. Community members who may need our services currently find it too inconvenient or are simply unable to access them. We are confident that this second campus will meet the growing demands and changing needs of the community in West O‘ahu. The 5-acre site on Old Fort Weaver Road, a generous gift from D.R. Horton, will provide a full range of services to the West O‘ahu community including (but not limited to): • A “new generation” shelter designed to optimize the behavioral, medical and socialization needs of the animals and the people who visit them, and for ease of cleaning, maintenance and disease control. • Services available 7 days a week to support the needs of the community. • Adoption services and facilities. • Community spay/neuter services. • Volunteer and educational opportunities for youth and adults. • An off-leash dog park for the community. The main 20,745 square feet (sf) two-story building on the northern portion of the project site is where
administrative, programmatic, adoption and shelter veterinary services will take place. The first floor will contain the animal admissions receiving area, temporary holding rooms, examination rooms, treatment rooms, surgery rooms, recovery rooms, cat holding rooms for the separation of different feline populations (isolation space, medical care, young kittens, etc.), individual dog wards, dog holding runs, dog/cat kennels and an area dedicated to our foster program. Shelter veterinary services will include a range of procedures not limited to vaccinations, health examinations, implantation of microchips, dental procedures, minor to major surgical procedures and the spay/neuter of animals prior to adoption.
An adoptions lanai will be located on the first floor and consist of a sheltered, open-air space, a help desk and a retail shop. A classroom on this floor will be provided for educational programming, youth camps and field trips, orientation for new staff members and volunteers, and public-animal related activities. A volunteer check-in area on the first floor will be provided for volunteers to store belongings and checkin with staff and other volunteers. South of the main building, the campus will have six adoption pavilions, including three dog pavilions, two cat pavilions, and a small animal pavilion. Two dog acquaintance areas for potential adopters to meet and greet dogs on a one-on-one basis will also be provided. South of the adoption pavilions and acquaintance areas, a spacious dog park will be provided for use by Hawaiian Humane and the public for dogs to walk, run, play and socialize. Two gazebos will be located on either side of the dog park to provide shade and comfort. We are thrilled to begin the construction of this longtime vision. We recognize the importance of making services more accessible across O‘ahu, for all of our island's people and pets. This project supports our mission to promote the human-animal bond and the humane treatment of all animals and underlines our commitment to create a more compassionate community for people and animals for generations to come.

My “why” By: Isabella Romualdo, Teens4Animals 2021 Leadership Team I started volunteering at the Hawaiian Humane Society in 2018. Back then, I had no clue just how many different programs and services Hawaiian Humane has to offer. A year later, I joined the Teens4Animals Council. I attended the summer training and my eyes were opened to all that Hawaiian Humane does. We learned about everything from animal cruelty to marine life safety to behavioral training. As the year went on, we also learned about pet identification, spaying/neutering your pets, and even about how Hawaiian Humane is an amnesty site and what that means for illegal animals on O‘ahu. At first I applied to the Teens4Animals council because I enjoyed volunteering and wanted to do more at the Hawaiian Humane. When people ask me ‘what’s your favorite part of being
on the Teens4Animals council?’, they expect me to talk about how much I enjoy working with the animals, or something along those lines. Although the animals are a big part of why I love being on the Teens4Animals council, in all honesty I love working alongside fellow council members just as much. I’ve now made friends with people from different schools across the island who share the same passion and dedication towards animals as I do. I also really enjoy meeting Hawaiian Humane staff and talking with people in the community that we meet at the various events we volunteer and educate at. Over the past two years, the Council has attended countless outreach events all over the island and has helped out at the numerous events that the Hawaiian Humane hosts. Volunteering at these events has strengthened
my people skills and has given me the confidence to be a leader in my community. I am so thankful to have been a part of such an amazing program. I will never forget the incredible people, programs and experiences being on the Teens4Animals council has given me.
Congratulations to the graduating 2020-2021 Teens4Animals Council! In a year full of uncertainty, we were able to count on these remarkable teens to show up for our island’s animals. From shadowing our veterinary services team and running our Pet Food Bank, to helping us open the new Pet Kōkua Outreach Center in Waipahu, we are so thankful for their contributions! DID YOU KNOW?
Hurricane preparation means a plan for pets too! In our island home of Hawai‘i, the summer months mean that we must be prepared for an event such as a tropical storm or hurricane. Hurricane season notoriously runs from June through the end of November and being prepared for a disaster means also having a plan in place for your pets. Your plan should include knowing where your nearest shelter is and having a pre-packed emergency pet kit. In an emergency situation, listen to your local radio stations and check other news outlets to stay updated on weather conditions and shelter locations. According to the City & County of Honolulu’s Department of Emergency Management, all emergency shelters on O‘ahu are pet-friendly. However, based on the nature of the storm or other circumstances, some shelter locations may be closed and other facilities may be utilized last-minute. As shelters do not stock pet supplies, your pre-packed emergency pet kit should include: • A 14-day supply of food and water in sealed containers along with food and water bowls • A crate or carrier for each pet in which they can stand up and turn around in with an ID card attached • Your pet’s leash and collar with an updated ID tag. Be sure that your pet’s microchip is updated with your current
contact information before the weather report spells trouble! • Bedding, towels and your pet’s favorite toys and treats. • Medications, hygiene and grooming supplies as well as cleaning supplies for crates and litter boxes. • Your pet’s vaccine records and other veterinary information such as medication and dosage/ administration instructions. • A pet first aid kit. • In case of separation, have photographs of your pet(s) on hand. Hawaiian Humane staff and volunteers help run the shelters that the City & County opens during a disaster. At these shelters, the Red Cross helps with the care of people, while Hawaiian Humane’s focus is on pets or stray

animals in need. We heavily rely on volunteers at these pet-friendly shelters during a disaster and are always seeking volunteers to lend a hand at locations islandwide. A happy and healthy life after amputation If you’ve visited our campus or browsed our animals available for adoption these past few years, it’s likely you’ve come across a dog or cat missing a leg. While the decision to amputate is one of the weightiest a pet owner or a shelter veterinarian can make, in the case of cancer or a severe injury to a limb, it can be a lifesaving one. At Hawaiian Humane we know that pets can live full and happy lives even after amputation. Our dedicated veterinary staff evaluate each animal for what the appropriate treatment is. We perform surgeries when it is within our skillset, or we send them to veterinary surgeons at Veterinary Emergency & Referral Center of Hawaii (VERC) or VCA Family when their specialized expertise is needed. Our Chief Veterinarian Dr. Carter explains, “our team sees many animals who come to us with considerable medical difficulties. We focus on how to give each animal the best treatment possible so that they can live happy and pain-free lives. We are fortunate to be able to provide many treatment options, including amputations when it’s absolutely necessary.”
That ability to do more medically for the animals often comes thanks to the generosity of donors to two very specific and special funds: Max’s Special Fund was established by Larry & Patricia Rodriguez in honor of their beloved dog Max, the fund makes possible the gift of health for O‘ahu’s canine friends in need of specialized medical care. This has included life-saving surgeries, heartworm treatments and other intensive care so that we can make as many dogs eligible for adoption as possible. Specialty healthcare often costs hundreds to thousands of dollars and is only made possible through the generous support of Max’s Special Fund contributors. Smudge’s Feline Fund is dedicated to providing specialty and veterinary care to cats available for adoption at Hawaiian Humane Society with medical conditions that would require outsourced help. Long-time Hawaiian Humane volunteer and supporter Karen Scharff established the fund in honor of her beloved cat, Smudge.

Supporter Spotlight Josie Josypenko gives back to the animals in more ways than one! Josie Josypenko was first introduced to Hawaiian Humane Society back in 1990. While speaking to Hawaiian Humane’s development assistant Caroline Adams, she recalled being awestruck by the campus, “I had never seen a shelter like this one before. What the public doesn’t often get to see is that everyone at Hawaiian Humane is there because of their passion for the animal family.” Since that first visit, Josie has adopted animals from us, given in more ways than one and has created lasting relationships with people who have the same passion and commitment to animals as she does. Growing up in rural Connecticut, Josie cemented her love and commitment to animals early, crediting a lot
of her success in life to continuous exposure to animals as a child. After joining the Marine Corps., “it was hard to have pets, so I gave back to animals ... whether it was donating or volunteering at the Humane Society of the United States or the local humane societies where I was stationed.” It wasn’t until Josie’s career moved her to Hawai‘i that she was finally able to adopt an animal from Hawaiian Humane in 1990. Josie returned to our campus in 2017 to meet some of the dogs that were up for adoption. “At first it felt like there was nothing that connected me to the dogs I was looking at”, Josie recalled. “There is always that special something, you don’t quite know what it is, but there is something that makes [the first meeting] a really special moment.” Then, Josie noticed that one of the kennels in plain view from the adoption’s lanai was occupied by this “kind of funny looking dog with great big ears.” Josie remembers that as she walked past the kennel, “the dog never barked at me, but instead walked alongside me and put her paw up on the fence. I knew she wanted me to meet her.” Josie decided to adopt Pie, the goofy dog with big ears, the same day. Pie’s personality is even bigger than her ears! After getting adopted, Pie became a regular in the neighborhood game of tag, “the more the kids giggled the more she wanted to play.” Pie reminds Josie when it’s time to play too, often employing the paw trick that won Josie’s heart when they first met. A few months ago, Josie and Pie welcomed another dog named Porscha to their family.

Since adopting Porscha in March of 2021, Josie has “seen a maturity in Pie that [she’s] never seen before; Pie is more of a nurturer now.” She immediately took Porscha under her wing; “it’s like Pie seems to understand that Porscha’s been through a hard time just like she had, and they bonded within a couple of

Advocacy Update: One step closer to stronger laws for safer paws! Five bills supported by Hawaiian Humane Society’s community advocates and animal welfare partners passed both chambers of the Hawai‘i State Legislature in the recently concluded session. The measures, which will advance protection for the animals we hold dear, are awaiting the approval of Governor David Ige. SB343 amends the penal code to establish the crime of sexual assault of an animal. HB1086 protects veterinarians from civil liability for rendering emergency aid to an animal and requires them to report suspected animal cruelty. HB416 prohibits tethering a dog in a configuration that endangers the animal and bans the unsupervised tethering of a dog under the age of six months.
SB345 bans the import for sale of cosmetics developed or manufactured using animal testing performed on or after 1/1/2022.
HB1021 gives Hawai‘i authorities charged with enforcing wildlife-related regulations access to information about individuals convicted of violating these rules in other states.

days.” Both Pie and Porscha were left out on the street to fend for themselves, but now, the new sisters have someone committed to loving and providing for them. After 30 years of supporting Hawaiian Humane, Josie has started giving back in another way: volunteering. Josie shared that, “The volunteer program here is above and beyond. [Hawaiian Humane Society] truly embraces their volunteers, and it’s so rewarding to give your time to a place that helps you to feel the difference you are making and to feel appreciation for the work that you are doing. It’s hard to find a group of people that are that passionate about what they do.” Since August of 2020, Josie has accumulated over 300 volunteer hours and recently won an award during National Volunteer Appreciation Month for representing Hawaiian Humane’s core values and being a dedicated volunteer. One staff member said, “not only does she bring her positivity, dedication, talents, and skills to her volunteer work, but she is also an advocate, supporter through adoptions, and a donor.” We’re so fortunate to have supporters like Josie!

Investing in the welfare of our animals Hawaiian Humane Society's recently announced plans to add a second campus to better service west O‘ahu residents received a sizable boost when Hawaiian Humane's board chair and longtime supporter Ginny Tiu pledged to match up to $2 million in gifts through September 30, 2021. "I decided to do this $2 million match for the Hawaiian Humane's campaign because I feel so strongly about the importance of its work and mission," said Tiu. "The need is great for the organization to expand its work to west O‘ahu. Our goal is to raise $10 million, and I thought if my pledge is matched, we will be in a good place to reach that goal by the time we open the doors of the new facility, planned in late 2022." The new facility will include a state-of-the-art shelter designed to serve the community and its animals seven days a week. The 5-acre site will also provide adoption services, spay/neuter services, lost and found services, volunteer and educational programs for adults and children and an off-leash community dog park. Ginny is an entertainer and philanthropist. She began her career as a child piano prodigy at 5 years old on the Ed Sullivan Show, and gained international fame both as a young solo performer, and as part of the Ginny Tiu Family, performing with her two sisters, Vicky and Liz, and brother Al. She has performed at Carnegie Hall, for President John F. Kennedy and President George H. W. Bush, and with Elvis Presley in the film "Girls, Girls, Girls." She credits her parents for instilling in her the desire to help others and give back to the community.

A round of ‘ap-paws’ for Tuxes & Tails 2021: A Virtual Benefit! SAKS FIFTH AVENUE This year, we re-designed our annual Tuxes & Tails so that we could continue to raise critical funds for the animals. The virtual experience extended to supporters far and wide who watched our one-hour show and participated in our online auction.

Cherie lives happily ever after, after a year in the shelter At Hawaiian Humane, we do all it takes and give animals all the time they need to find a new, loving home. While this is the case, it is not common for pets to stay with us quite as long as Cherie, a sweet 4-yearold female domestic shorthair cat who was with us at our Mo'ili'ili campus for 367 days. Over the year spent with us, our team grew to know her as a simple girl who enjoyed treats, taking naps by the window in the sunlight and familiar people that gave her gentle affection. With patience and lots of love, we were finally able to find Cherie her perfect match. Her new family told us that they were drawn to her because they thought she was beautiful and couldn’t imagine why she was

looked over for so long. As for how Cherie is settling into her new home, they say, “Cherie is coming out of her shell and warming up nicely. She is out and about in the condo even sleeping in her box under the coffee table. Last night she even rubbed her head against me, let me pet her head, and slept next to me on the floor. Plus, she has been very talkative and loves sleeping in the sun!”

35 years of friendship and helping O'ahu’s animals together! Did you know that Crazy Shirts and Hawaiian Humane Society have been partnering together for over 35 years? Each year, this locally-started brand creates new designs promoting adoption in their signature style, while also donating proceeds to the animals. In 2021 alone, they have already donated more than $7,000 to help O‘ahu’s animals and people. Over the past three decades, the company has also supported Hawaiian Humane by hosting adoption events in their stores, sponsoring events like PetWalk and sponsoring adoption fees.
