A MESSAGE FROM ANNA Trying times teach us a lot. We learn about ourselves, the people in our lives and the community we live in. This has been true for Hawaiian Humane over the past few months. From the beginning of this crisis we have thought of it as an opportunity to grow, to think differently, to question our assumptions and to use what we are discovering as inspiration to build a better, more compassionate and more nimble organization.

If you’ve been following us closely you know that it’s been a little over a year since we embarked on a broader journey to transform ourselves into a truly progressive animal welfare organization, one that moves heaven and earth to save animal lives and make our state a better place for animals. I’ve spent many years in animal welfare, and I’ve learned that getting it right for the animals is not about fixing one or two things, or simply refreshing a mission statement. It takes a continuous concerted effort with thousands of adjustments, decisions and investments. In this edition of Paw Prints we’ll share some of the many exciting things that we are doing together to make O’ahu better for people and animals.

Cats

Life is difficult for Free-Roaming cats. There are many reasons for this: lack of resources, lack of public awareness of issues, antiquated views on how to address the challenge and lack of a concerted approach by all stakeholders. Our platform, our resources, our position as contractor for the City & County of Honolulu and our mission, all require us to do more and do better for O’ahu’s cats. Here, we will share some of the initiatives we are working on to bring about positive change.

It Takes A Village

COVID-19 has reminded us that no organization can successfully accomplish their mission in isolation. It takes collaboration and sharing of resources, information and people. So many organizations and individuals have partnered with us since this pandemic started, and we take some time to recognize this team effort in this issue.

July 1 which mandates microchipping of pet cats and dogs. We strongly support this requirement and want to make it as easy as possible for people to microchip their pets. We share here how we are partnering with 14 private veterinarians in August to provide low-cost microchipping services to the community.

COVID-19 Response When we went to print with our last edition we were just entering into a dramatic stage of our history as we responded to the COVID-19 pandemic. There were so many unknowns – for us, for our community and for the people and animals we care about. While we’re still not out of the woods by a longshot, we have learned, adjusted and thrived. We have maintained adoption levels, increased fostering, reopened our Community Spay/Neuter Center to even more animals, especially free-roaming cats, provided pet food to thousands of needy pets, and saved, healed and cared for so many animals.

Our staff and volunteers were heroes during this challenging time.

When we needed to change and adjust, they jumped right in. They took on new roles, new hours, new working locations and at times, entirely new ways of doing their jobs. In a year full of rapid change, COVID just added more, but we are so proud of this team for how they responded. So much of what they do happens behind the scenes. Every animal that bounds off our property to their new home represents hours of love, care, and advocacy by our team.

We are learning to be a team together, to listen and support each other, and to speak up when we see things that need to be changed.

We’re building a new culture together, a culture of respect, of transparency, of accountability. We see this change every day in the lives of the animals we care for. We thank you for making this possible.

Hawaiian Humane provides support and comfort after the loss of a pet Saying goodbye to a beloved pet is never easy. They are our family and become an ingrained part of our routines, lives and hearts. In 2010, Hawaiian Humane began offering a Pet Loss Support Group to provide support to community members processing and grieving the loss of a pet. Historically, these meetings took place in person on campus however, the current COVID-19 public health crisis has caused state and local government to rightfully place limitations on in-person gatherings. Knowing that feelings of loneliness during these difficult times can be magnified when dealing with the loss of a pet, we have made special effort to innovate and find a way to continue this support.

Starting April 7, 2020, Hawaiian Humane shifted the usual in-person Pet Loss Support Group to a virtual platform and continues to provide support to those who need it every first Tuesday of every month.

Find comfort and compassion in Hawaiian Humane's Virtual Pet Loss Support Group, facilitated by counselor Rosemarie Grigg the first Tuesday of every month at 6:30pm HST via private video conference. Spaces are limited and open to the public as well as current members.

A Socially Conscious position on Free-Roaming cats (FRC) A Free-Roaming cat is any cat that is not confined in a house or other type of enclosure. This includes pets, strays and community cats.

We’ve been making a lot of changes to improve the lives of Free-Roaming cats on O’ahu. We want to make our position on FRC clear and share what we are doing to “walk the talk.”

Paw FRC overpopulation is an urgent animal welfare concern.

Paw We support, participate in and partner with FRC population management strategies that are humane and proven effective.

Paw We will always prioritize non-lethal solutions and

will not support, participate in or partner with FRC population management strategies in which the intended outcome is the euthanasia of healthy animals.

Paw We support an approach to FRC population management that includes:

• Data-driven, high-quality and high-volume sterilization programs • Community education on the importance of sterilization, the suffering caused by pet abandonment and the benefits of keeping owned cats indoors

There's a lot more to do and a lot more in the works, but we are committed to making life better for our cats, people and wildlife by reducing suffering, overpopulation and homelessness.

This chart shows some of the initiatives we have taken and programs we are working on. There is no single answer to the challenge, but each of these programs is part of a comprehensive, big-picture approach that is helping to save cat lives and support our community.

Trap Rental Only for Trap Neuter Return Manage (TNRM) Efforts As of June 1, we no longer loan traps to individuals who are seeking to remove cats from their neighborhood or property.

Adoption Partnerships We have hired an Off-site Adoptions Coordinator to work with our partners Petco, Hawai’i Cat Cafe, and Pounce Hawaii.

Our partners have adopted out nearly 600 cats since the beginning of this year!

Doing More for O‘ahu's Cats

Easier Spay/ Neuter for TNRM

Combo Testing/ FIV + Adoptions

In December of 2019 we added a fourth day to our Community Spay/Neuter Clinic with 10 walk-in spots daily for TNRM cats.

We are working on adding more days.

Effective midFebruary, we began combo testing all of our cats. Cats with FIV now reside in a separate cat house and are promoted for adoption.

Expanded Our Foster Program We have hired a Foster Coordinator and expanded our foster volunteer recruitment. Our number of cats fostered is up 62.9% over last year.

Free Feline Fix We asked the City & County of Honolulu to make the Feline Fix Spay/Neuter program free, saving community cat caregivers $10 per cat.

We have also proactively recruited neonatal kitten foster volunteers. This program is new but showing great promise and is helping save the lives of this fragile demographic of kittens that come into our care.

On the rise: The dangers of dough In the age of “Stay at Home” orders and quarantine, sourdough starters have become the new Tamagochis for millennials everywhere, but did you know that this nationwide trend of baking your own bread could potentially be hazardous to pets?

As people have been forced to spend more time at home due to the COVID-19 pandemic, baking bread at home has become a popular hobby but with this, the ASPCA Poison Control Center has reported an increase in breadrelated pet consumption calls.

Severity of symptoms is dependent on the amount of dough ingested, but if you suspect that your pet has consumed raw, yeasted dough, contact your veterinarian ASAP as every second counts.

As long as it is not raisin bread, fully-baked bread is safe for pets as an occasional treat however, pets should be kept far away from uncooked, yeasted bread dough.

Ingestion of raw bread dough could result in effects parallel to alcohol poisoning in humans and can be fatal. This is because raw, uncooked yeast ferments the carbohydrates in the dough creating byproducts of ethanol (alcohol) and carbon dioxide. This chemical process, essential for

Disaster preparedness means a plan for pets It’s no secret that 2020 has already been a figurative whirlwind full of unprecedented challenges and sudden changes to everyday life. However, in our island home of Hawai‘i, the summer months mean that we must also be prepared for an event such as a tropical storm or hurricane. Hurricane season notoriously runs from June through the end of November and being prepared for a disaster means also having a plan in place for your pets. Your plan should include knowing where your nearest shelter is and having a pre-packed emergency pet kit.

In an emergency situation, listen to your local radio stations and check other news outlets to stay updated on weather conditions and shelter locations. According to the City & County of Honolulu’s Department of Emergency Management, all emergency shelters on O‘ahu are pet-friendly. However, based on the nature of the storm or other circumstances, some shelter locations may be closed and other facilities may be utilized last-minute.

Your pre-packed emergency pet kit should include: • A 14-day supply of food and water in sealed containers along with food and water bowls • A crate or carrier for each pet in which they can stand up and turn around in with an ID card attached • Your pet’s leash and collar with updated ID – be sure that your pet’s microchip is updated with your current contact information!

• Bedding, towels and your pet’s favorite toys and treats • Medications, hygiene and grooming supplies as well as cleaning supplies for crates and litter boxes • Your pet’s vaccine records and other veterinary information such as medication and dosage/ administration instructions • A pet first aid kit • In case of separation, have photographs of your pet(s) on hand

Hawaiian Humane staff and volunteers help run the shelters that the City & County opens during a disaster.

At these shelters, the Red Cross helps with the care of people, while Hawaiian Humane’s focus is on pets or stray animals in need. We heavily rely on volunteers at these pet-friendly shelters during a disaster and are always seeking volunteers to lend a hand at locations islandwide.

While emergency shelter environments may be adapted to adhere to new social distancing and other guidelines to keep our community safe, disaster preparedness for you and your pet remains the same. It is always crucial to be prepared, even more so while we continue the fight against COVID-19.

Meet our new teen council members The Teens4Animals Council is an annual youth-oriented program devoted to making the island a better place for animals through advocacy, education and community service.

Each year, the Hawaiian Humane Society selects 15 high-school youth to join the council through a vigorous application and interview process. The Teens4Animals Council receives a four-day, intensive summer training in which they learn the basics of animal welfare. Throughout their year-long term, the council is able to witness surgeries, converse with animal welfare professionals, attend and assist with events, volunteer for outreach-directed initiatives, help educate other students about responsible pet ownership and coordinate fundraisers.

Council members form friendships with like-minded youth and are instrumental in further perpetuating the Hawaiian Humane Society’s mission to promote the humananimal bond and the humane treatment of all animals.

Scooby can finally rest easy in his new home

Upon his arrival at Hawaiian Humane Society this past January, Scooby, a senior Chinese Shar-Pei mix, was notably a nervous pup and in need of a home that could provide training and help him feel secure and at ease. In addition, he suffered from severe skin irritation due to allergies and ticks. Once Scooby received the medical care he needed and was ready for adoption, Scooby had many families interested in him.

However, each time he was ultimately returned to Hawaiian Humane after chewing through crates and even destroying doors due to severe separation anxiety.

While it was always disheartening for us to see Scooby return, our adoptions team was hopeful that they would find him a home that could support his intense special needs and provide him with the high level of care and attention that he needed to overcome his anxiety.

Then one day in May, fate (and a lot of determination and perseverance) would have it that Steve and Keith of Honolulu would visit our Adoptions Center to meet Scooby and ultimately bring him home!

We have since caught up with Steve and Keith to check in on their new family of three and they said, "Scooby has settled into a great routine and we're really enjoying seeing his personality emerge the more he feels like this is a safe and supportive home

for him. He's such a great dog–smart, obedient, and affectionate."

No strangers to adopting, Steve and Keith went on to share that Scooby has been their sixth adopted dog over a span of three decades. “One of our rescues we adopted was 12 years old. Our most recent beloved dog, Barney (age 14.5), passed away in January, and the grief hit hard, but it helped to think about adopting again,” said Steve. “I would often look at the Hawaiian 14 | Hawaiian Humane Society • HawaiianHumane.org

Microchip Madness - August 2020

In partnership with Hawaiian Humane, veterinary clinics islandwide are offering $10 microchipping for pets throughout the month of August!

Due to the recent update to City & County of Honolulu ordinances making microchips mandatory for owned cats and dogs, and in an effort to reduce the number of lost pets in the community, participating veterinary clinics are waiving the cost of their office visit so that dogs and cats can receive microchips at a substantial discount. Pet owners can also visit Hawaiian Humane to microchip their pets as well. Last year, almost 1,800 pets received microchips through this program!

After seeing Scooby on our website and noticing that Scooby had been with us for a while, the two became curious. But, they said, "Once we talked to the staff and actually met him, it was a no-brainer."

Scooby is now loving life at home with Keith and Steve. He has put on three pounds and is making a full recovery from his allergies with the help of a special diet, medicated shampoo, some medication and good ol’ Tender Loving Care.

Sometimes, it takes a little longer for our pets to find the homes they deserve. However, we give them all the time they need to find the perfect match and when it finally happens, it's truly amazing!

Donor s potlight Elaine & Dennis Kato support with IRA Rollovers Long-time donors Elaine and Dennis Kato visited Hawaiian Humane earlier this year. They knew we found homes for a lot of animals but had no idea the depth and breadth of what the Hawaiian Humane Society does for its animals and the community. That is, until our President & CEO Anna Neubauer took time to give the Katos a tour of our Mō‘ili‘ili campus.

First stop was the renovated Community Spay/Neuter Center where our veterinarians perform upwards of 30 to 40 spay and neuter surgeries per day. The Katos were able to briefly meet Niki McGreevey, DVM and her team as they performed their duties like a well-oiled machine. In a single day, members of the community can drop off their pets in the morning and pick them up in the afternoon post-surgery. Due to COVID-19, Hawaiian Humane continues to follow strict health and safety guidelines to ensure the safety of staff and the community alike, and remains open for appointments Wednesdays through Saturdays. “Simply amazing,” remarked Elaine Kato as they left the Spay and Neuter Center.

Next stop on the tour was a visit to our Admissions building that came into service in 2017. It was explained to the Katos that the two-story structure is where the almost 22,000 animals per year arrive for their assessments, medical services and microchipping prior to being made available for adoption. On the second floor, the Katos met Chief Veterinarian, Dr. Kasey Carter just as he was completing a tooth extraction surgery for a dog in our care. Dr. Carter showed the Katos the 3-operating table surgical suite where animals are spayed and neutered as well as helped with minor surgeries.

“We were both totally amazed at the comprehensive care [Hawaiian Humane] provides for all the animals and how the majority of [their] operating budget is through donations,” said Dennis Kato. “For this reason, we will always be faithful donors to the Hawaiian Humane Society,” he continued.

The Katos have been long-time IRA Rollover donors.

“It’s so easy to do,” Dennis said. “I simply tell my provider where to transfer the funds and it’s no income to me, so no taxes! I encourage others to support the Hawaiian Humane Society via their IRA if they are old enough to take a distribution.”

Pets in Paradise™ 2021 Calendar Contest winners announced!

Thanks to community members like you, this year’s Pets in Paradise™ calendar contest was a record-breaking success, raising over $45,000 for animals in our care! We truly believe that all pets are stars, but there are a few that we would like to highlight as the winners of our two grand prizes– the President's Award and the People's Choice Award!

The winner of our President’s Award is a pup whose name says it all–Honey! Honey is a super sweet 8 year-old mix and was part of the 2016 Waianae rescue where Hawaiian Humane rescued over 300 dogs from neglect. Honey’s owner Ludmila

Santos says that Honey, “loves food, naps on our coffee table and digging holes. We love her so much and our life is better with her in it.”

A fun fact about Honey is that she is trilingual! Ludmila also shared with us that Honey understands when her owners speak Brazilian, Portuguese or English!

Presley is undeniably a photogenic pin-up pet which is why it is no surprise that he is the winner of the People’s Choice Award! The 4 year-old Maltese is the “little ambassador of our street,” says his owner, Arlene Takenaka.

During their daily walks, Presley makes a point to visit each of his doggy neighbors to say hello. Arlene noted Presley’s congeniality saying, “because of him we have made so many good friends in the neighborhood ... he has brought so much joy and love into our home.”

And, we would be remiss if we didn’t mention

our runner up winners, Cassie and Umami–two adorable canines whose photogenic entries raised close to $7,000 alone for animals at Hawaiian Humane!

Putting the “found” in lost & found July 1 brought good news for O‘ahu’s pets. All dogs and cats on O‘ahu are now required to have microchip identification.

This is expected to greatly increase the number of reunions between lost pets and their families.

Mainland jurisdictions that have switched from license tags to mandatory microchipping have seen return to owner rates double or triple. As the official pet lost and found for O‘ahu, Hawaiian Humane’s return-to-owner rates already exceed the national average. This change should allow even more pets finding their way home without even having to enter the shelter. Microchips can be scanned at veterinary offices and in the field, allowing pets to go directly back home.

While licenses have to be renewed and identification tags can be lost, microchips are permanent and the information registered to them can be accessed by anyone with a microchip scanner and an internet connection.

Registration That registration step is the key to unlocking the power of the chip. Microchips are not tracking devices. The only information contained on a microchip is a unique identification number.

In order for microchips to be effective, pet owners must register their contact information with the microchip manufacturer and make sure that information is updated if it changes.

Owners can get help identifying their pets’ microchip numbers and the chip manufacturers by having their pets scanned at a veterinary clinic or animal welfare organization.

Several other changes to Honolulu’s animal ordinance also took effect this summer, embracing national animal welfare best practices and strengthening protections for island pets.

Stray hold times and fees Lost dogs and cats with identification who are admitted to the Hawaiian Humane Society will

be held for a minimum of five days to allow their owners time to come forward and bring them home.

After that period, stray animals will receive individual evaluations to assess their unique needs. Animals who are friendly and healthy will be made available for new homes as quickly as possible. Others will stay in the care of Hawaiian Humane, its foster care volunteers or other community partners to get treatment for health or behavior issues before being made available for adoption.

Most owners, of course, pick up their lost pets immediately. More than 70 percent of animals with identification who are reclaimed by their owners go home within 48 hours, and that’s a great thing.

The shelter is a crowded and stressful environment for animals.

It puts them at risk for illness and behavioral issues.

Owners who reclaim their pets within 24 hours are not charged a hold fee. After 24 hours, owners Continued on next page

Pet owners who will be traveling, particularly if they will be out of cell phone and email contact, should register the contact information of their pet sitter or veterinarian with the manufacturer of their pets’ microchips. That way there will still be a point of contact should their pets get lost.

Routine strays The new law also penalizes dog owners if their pets are routinely stray. While these measures are expected to apply to a small number of cases, these animals represent a particularly vulnerable and potentially dangerous population. The new ordinance is designed to minimize the risks to animals and people, and encourage owners to keep their dogs safe, by: • Requiring the spay/neuter of any dog brought in as stray three times in a 12-month period.

• Imposing an additional $30 penalty for any dog impounded as stray three times or more in a 12-month period.

The mandatory spay/neuter of stray dogs is increasingly common around the country. Hawaiian Humane supported this approach because frequent strays are at grave risk of injury and death. They also have an outsized impact on pet overpopulation, perceptions of public safety and the safety of other animals. Since fertile dogs are more likely to stray, it makes sense to include spay/neuter as one way to reduce the problem.
