HAWAIIAN HUMANE SOCIETY ANNUAL REPORT

JULY 1, 2020 - JUNE 30, 2021 ANNUAL REPORT 2020-2021

Publishing an annual report gives us an opportunity to share with our community the progress, growth, challenges and successes of the past fiscal year in one place using the numbers and data that we track in our everyday work. But it also gives us, as leaders of the organization, the opportunity to pause and look across the sweep of the previous year and identify significant trends. This reflection and analysis informs us on how we are performing as we strive to fulfill our mission of promoting the human-animal bond and the humane treatment of all animals. As our islands and our communities wrestle with the realities of the pandemic, we are reminded more than ever that improving animal welfare can only be accomplished if it’s a community effort. We’ve been deeply inspired by the community’s engagement in our work, in ways big and small, over the past year. A good example of this is the dramatic increase in Free-Roaming cats we’ve provided spay or neuter surgeries through our Community Spay/Neuter Center. This year saw a 264% increase, jumping from 1,595 procedures in fiscal year 2020, to the 5,804 in fiscal year 2021. The community involvement comes from the many individuals and organizations who spend their weekends and evenings trapping cats and then bringing them to our clinic so they can receive the surgery that dramatically improves their quality of life and reduces the number of cats on our island. This dedicated effort will continue to lower the population of Free-Roaming cats on O‘ahu over time. Our efforts to increase the spaying/ neutering of dogs at our Community Spay/Neuter Center have also shown success, with an increase of 22% owned dogs spayed/neutered over the previous year. This includes 60 dogs of unsheltered community members that we transported to our Community Spay/Neuter Center for surgery. This year has also seen the dramatic growth of our Pet Kōkua outreach efforts. Our outreach teams are bringing much needed pet supplies and pet wellness services to the pets of low and no income families across the island. From flea and tick medications to vaccinations, microchips, and pet food, our efforts are helping to improve the lives of animals and helping to keep them with their families. Every single vaccination administered, leash given out, or bag of pet food distributed is made possible because of the generosity of animal lovers in our community and further afield. We are truly coming together to help animals and their families, mitigating at least some of the impacts of these difficult times. Providing convenient access to our services is key to supporting our community, and this is why in March of this year we opened up a satellite location for our outreach efforts in Waipahu. Additionally, promising to bring even more long-term benefits to our community, in May we broke ground on our new West O’ahu campus, where we expect to see as many as 10,000 animals a year and provide a wide range of services including education, shelter veterinary care, adoptions, lost and found, investigations and even a community dog park. The achievements detailed in this report are a testament to the coming together of Hawaiian Humane and the community around the needs of our animals and people. We look to the future knowing that the changes and investments we are making today will help to save and improve the lives of animals in our community for years to come.

A welcoming place for animals We are committed to being a resource for O‘ahu’s animals and treating each animal in our care humanely and with compassion. Our team provides individualized attention for every animal in our care, whether that’s reuniting them with their families, treating illness or injury, transferring them to other organizations or helping them find new loving homes.

Adoptions There’s a special joy in watching a pet find a new home and begin to bond with their people and we had many of those special moments on our campus and with our adoption partners this year. And while adoptions is a vital part of our mission, preventing strays and surrenders is also critical to improving animal welfare. Fiscal Year 2021 was the first full year during the pandemic and our teams worked creatively with pet owners to find solutions that kept more animals with their families. This included handing out over 50,000 lbs. of pet food to pet owners in financial need, and providing other wellness and safety services and products such as vaccinations, flea and tick prevention, and leashes and collars. We did see an almost 5% increase in cat adoptions this year, and much of that is thanks to our outside adoption partners such as Hawai’i Cat Cafe, Pounce Hawaii and Petco.

Spay/Neuter Hawaiian Humane provides spay and neuter services for all cats and dogs in our care, and many of the small animals we adopt out. We also offer spay and neuter services for owned pets and Free-Roaming Cats through our Community Spay/Neuter Center. Spaying or neutering your pet early in life helps reduce pet overpopulation and provides a number of health benefits. Sterilizing Free-Roaming or community cats and returning them to the colonies where they make their home is a humane and effective way to reduce the Free-Roaming cat population over time.

Our veterinary services team delivers high-quality care at a high volume to thousands of animals each year at our stateof-the-art veterinary hospital. One of the keys to saving more lives and providing animals a better quality of life is being able to deliver more and better veterinary services. This includes a robust dental program and performing increasingly more complex and challenging surgeries.

Pets Fostered Fostering saves lives. Loving foster homes give young, ill, underweight, and shy pets the opportunity to heal, strengthen, gain courage, and ultimately find new families. Our overall number is lower this year than the previous year thanks to last year’s very successful emergency foster program at the beginning of the pandemic. Our cat numbers increased dramatically thanks to our ongoing focus on developing cat foster volunteers in the community. Due to the pandemic, many volunteers were working from home and were able to foster more cats and kittens.

Committed To Compassion As an independent, local nonprofit that is O‘ahu’s largest animal welfare organization, we rely on the generosity of our donors to be a force for good in the community. Every donation made to the Hawaiian Humane Society goes directly to helping Hawai‘i’s animals in need. It takes more than $27,000 a day to run Hawaiian Humane’s programs, which make a difference in the lives of local people and animals through animal care, rescue, law enforcement, education and advocacy. Mahalo to the donors and supporters who believe in Hawaiian Humane’s mission to promote the human-animal bond and the humane treatment of all animals. Your support is the backbone of this organization.
