More furry friends find homes Innovative promotions, coupled with ambitious expansion, meant a banner year for adoptions. In total, 6,734 animals were placed with new

families from July 2010 through June 2011. National studies have revealed that adoption price in a downturned economy can affect the volume of adoptions but does not affect a 
family’s commitment to provide a home for life.

This year we wrestled with an increase in homeless animals and offered our most creative promotions to prevent a decrease in adoptions. Free over (age) 3. Fifty percent off. Pick Your Pet & Pick Your Price. Valentine’s Day Doggie Speed Dating in the Park. Priceless Pets. You name it – we did it this year. Adoptions were free on many occasions and donations paid for the more than $250 in services that we invest in every animal.

A record-breaking 2,646 cats found new families. In addition to adopting out felines from the shelter, we team up with PETCO Kapolei to adopt out Humane Society cats every day. Many felines have also found new homes at several adoptions events from military bases to Mike McKenna’s Windward Ford. Rescued Waianae dogs get new start In June, the Humane Society embarked on a rescue mission in waist-high grass in the thick of the night searching for dogs in distress. Ten dogs were discovered – one dead and nine starving and near death. They were rushed to intensive care. It all started when a concerned neighbor flagged down a humane investigator driving by. The neighbor said the owner of the dogs had been gone for nearly a month. Some Continued on page 2
