2012 offers new hope in animal welfare 2011 was a great year for Oahu’s animals. 6,734 adoptions. 3,225 reunions of lost pets with owners. 2,147 foster care animals made eligible for adoption. 7,247 sterilizations performed.

The Humane Society aims to reach more than 7,500 adoptions – that’s about 800 more than last year.

Partnerships are top priority for the new year. No one organization can solve pet overpopulation nor the myriad of animal-related issues that our community faces. “We are looking to work with other rescue groups and businesses that want to help animals to support spay and neuter, adoptions partnerships and more,” said Keoni Vaughn, Humane Society’s director of operations. “We want to ensure our adoptions numbers continue to rise. It’s going to take coordination and collaboration.”

Aleisha Swartz, DVM leads efforts to save more lives Hawaiian Humane Society welcomes Aleisha Swartz, DVM as chief veterinarian. Prior to joining us, Dr. Swartz worked at Fulton County Animal Services in Atlanta. Prior to that, she worked in private practice for eight years.

So what would inspire someone to move from an animal clinic that treated 15 animals a day to a bustling shelter in which hundreds arrive every week?

“Shelter medicine is my passion; it takes a certain kind of animal lover to want to make a difference in a work environment where you are dealing with a huge influx of animals,” said Swartz. “I choose to work for open-admission shelters because I think they stand for a very noble principle. “Limited-admission shelters are selective-entry and have the Continued on page 4
