Polk State College is proud to be one of 15 schools across the nation to receive a $100,000 grant from All Within My Hands as part of the Metallica Scholars Initiative. The initiative is providing direct support to Polk State’s Computer Numeric Control (CNC) Machining Program. This includes scholarships for unemployed and underemployed individuals to complete the four-month program’s short-term training courses as well as funds for students to take exams for six National Institute for Metalworking Skills (NIMS) certifications.

Polk County Public Schools are committed to safely reopening. Every school has been issued washable masks so they can offer every staff member and student up to five masks, with an additional 155,000 masks on order. They’ve purchased 10,000 reusable face shields, more than 280 desk shields, and more than 1 million disposable gloves.

They’re installing more than 9,000 hand soap dispensers on campuses and hand sanitizing dispensers throughout all of the common areas of campuses, including cafeterias, media centers and gymnasiums.

State Farm Winter Haven associates held a Virtual Back to School Drive to support teachers and students at Winter Haven’s John Snively Elementary School and Denison Middle School. They gave donations worth over $2,800 that will help up to 262 students and 50 teachers.

State Farm agents across Florida also donated over $20,000 in school supplies to different schools and non-profits across the state.

Winter Haven City Commission passed Ordinance O-20-32 extending the masks/face covering requirement inside the City limits consistent with CDC guidelines. This Emergency Ordinance expires September 15 unless rescinded and/or extended.

The Emergency Ordinance will be enforced in the area inside the incorporated limit of Winter Haven with a fine of $150 for those that don’t comply.

WATER ACADEMY

PHASE II BEGINS

Lake Region High School’s new Water Academy is the first of its kind in the school district. Students accepted to the Water Academy will learn about hydrology, geological principles of water resources, wetlands management, stormwater systems, environmental water resources, equipment and facilities maintenance, and scientific and research concepts through faceto-face and virtual activities. Fifty Juniors and Seniors from the district could apply.

The Polk Museum of Art at Florida Southern College will reopen to the public on Sept. 8th. They are requiring all visitors and staff to wear masks and have their temperatures taken at the entrance. They will be constantly cleaning the facility and following strict social distancing guidelines.

Walk-ins are allowed, however advanced registration online is preferred. Admission to the museum is always free. Members are able to visit on the Member-Exclusive days, two weeks prior to the general public.

A live missile was found near Lakeland Linder International Airport on Aug. 14th. It was taken into custody by an explosives team from MacDill Air Force Base. The southeast side of the airport and Polk State College Airside were evacuated. The Military Times reported that the missile was live, but not armed. The French S-530 guided missile used in air-toair combat was found near the offices of defense contractor Draken International.

Polk State College entered Phase II of its Return to Campus Plan on August 17 with some functions returning to the Winter Haven and Lakeland campuses and most operations continuing to take place remotely. The Winter Haven Administration (WAD) Building and Lakeland Technology Building (LTB) are open to students and visitors to access services including advising, registration, and financial aid. The College encourages students to only come to campus if necessary.

Toasted Marshmallow Old Fashioned 2 ounces bourbon Âź ounce toasted marshmallow syrup (recipe below) 2 dashes bitters Toasted marshmallow syrup: 1 cup sugar 1 cup water 8 toasted marshmallows To make syrup: Add sugar, water and toasted marshmallows to a small saucepan. Simmer until sugar and marshmallows have dissolved. Remove from heat, strain and allow to cool completely. Spoon off any marshmallow solids.

To make drink: Add bourbon, syrup and bitters to a glass with ice. Stir. Strain into a glass with ice.

Garnish with toasty marshmallow and orange peel.

This drink is a nod to our Best Of issue and our camping theme. According to Drinks International, The Old Fashioned was the best selling classic cocktail of 2019. We’ve taken this American favorite and switched it up with marshmallow simple syrup instead of the traditional sugar cube. Recipe adapted from VinePair. Enjoy! Please drink responsibly, 21+.

1. DON’T EXPECT BARGAINS Early on, several people tried to help me see the “bright side” of helping clients shop for a home during a pandemic: That they were going to get the deal of the century!

The logic seemed sound enough at first. After all, interest rates had fallen to all-time lows. And, surely, not many people would want to uproot their lives and move during this crisis, right?

Wrong. In Central Florida, few people were interested in moving, so inventory was down.

First-time home buyers, however, were out in full force.

The result: Nearly every house that hit the market sold fast. Some sold within 24 hours of being listed, and most went well above asking in intense bidding wars. In fact, inventory is substantially down.

2. PREPARE FOR VIRTUAL HOUSE-HUNTING Anyone actively shopping for a home right now needs to become an expert in digitally touring spaces. Every market is different, but many are limiting home showings to comply with social distancing.

In many cases, you may have to make do with photos or videos posted. Alternatively, you might be able to have a real estate agent view the home on your behalf, and give you a FaceTime tour.

If your real estate agent can tour homes for you, don’t be shy about asking questions, including asking for a closer look at anything and everything you’re curious about. If you are home shopping online, make sure to pinch and zoom in on photos to get a good look at the little nooks and crannies of a house.

Also, remember that listing pictures may not tell the whole story. Special camera lenses and creative angles often make rooms appear larger than they are. Look out for potentially distorted pictures (which often have angles that curve somewhat) and learn to take such shots with a grain of salt.

In your house-hunting journey, your agent will be invaluable. They will be your eyes and ears on the ground at showings. Lean on their judgment and trust them to point out things that pictures and videos just can’t capture.

Your agent should point out flaws or potential red flags that you wouldn’t have noticed on your own, like crooked walls.

4. DON’T START HOUSE-HUNTING WITHOUT MORTGAGE PRE-APPROVAL The COVID-19 pandemic has been felt at every level of the economy, not just in the United States, but globally.

In response, many banks and mortgage lenders have tightened their lending requirements.

Some have even raised minimum creditscore requirements, now require larger down payments, and are triple-checking borrowers’ employment status, among other measures.

People shopping for homes during the pandemic can struggle to get pre-approved for mortgages that they would have easily qualified for before the crisis hit. In some cases, it may be difficult for buyers to get approval at all. All of which means it’s more important than ever to work with a lender before you shop.

5. DON’T EXPECT TO NEGOTIATE FOR EXTRAS When you’re in a buyers’ market, home shoppers have some power. In addition to submitting offers that are below the asking price, buyers can ask for extra perks to sweeten the deal.

Common examples of these perks include asking the seller to leave behind specific appliances, monies towards closing costs or furniture.

Shopping during this pandemic is the ultimate opposite: a seller’s market. This is a tight market, with the lowest inventory, that I’ve seen in a while. This means that, when it comes to writing offers, You have to make sacrifices to be competitive.

In a hypercompetitive buying market, most houses received multiple offers—sometimes more than a dozen in a single day. Asking for anything considered “extra” could land my offer in the rejection pile right away.

That being said, of course, a good real estate agent will never advise you to put in an offer that doesn’t ultimately serve your best interests.

Shopping for a home is always complicated— that’s a given. But, if you’re embarking on your house-hunting journey during this unprecedented and uncertain time, be sure to prepare yourself for something extra.
