This month in the spirit of shopping local, we feature Florida wine! It’s a growing industry here bringing in 300,000 tourists to visit wineries around the state. We’ve mapped out a few so you can start exploring Florida wine country. Researching for this story, we tasted a lot of wine. I have to say I didn’t realize we had such a diverse range of ingredients and flavors here. I really liked the Sweet Blueberry Wine from Keel & Curley, it would be excellent chilled on a hot day.

We also talk to a couple of local “storm spotters” and hear how they work to keep us safe. We visit Grape Expectations & learn about the Polk Senior Games. The games grow larger each year and will be having their closing ceremony this month.

Winter Haven City Commissioners approved an inventory list of properties they own in Florence Villa, then moments later, quit-deeded two of the parcels to the Winter Haven Housing Authority, at their Feb. 12 city meeting.

Merle Bishop, City Growth Management Department Director, said commissioners had to first approve the inventory list by resolution (in keeping with Florida statutes) in order to be able to do the deed. The purpose of donating the land to the Housing Authority is so that they may build affordable housing on the land and enhance growth and development in Florence Villa.

Chain Of Lakes Field House Progresses Work on the Chain of Lakes Field House continues, as commissioners approved an agreement for construction manager at risk services between the City of Winter Haven and Rodda Construction in February.

City Manager Mike Herr and Assistant City Manager T. Michael Stavres presented the information to commissioners last month. On Sept. 26, the City of Winter Haven advertised requests for qualifications for construction manager at risk services. Oct. 25, the bids closed, and the winning bid was team Rodda Construction and Everett Whitehead & Son. Their bid was approved by the city commission Dec. 11, 2017.

Ten couples participated in the Fifth Annual Valentine’s Day Group Wedding on the steps of the Polk County History Center in Bartow. “It sounded like fun and was very convenient,” said Winter Haven resident Karen (Smith) Youngmeyer, who married Robert Youngmeyer.

When the couple applied for their marriage license, initially their plan was to get married on Feb. 15, but when they were told about the group ceremony, both decided to participate. Several of the couples gave similar answers when asked why they chose to exchange vows in a group ceremony.

Head coach Mike Campbell said the 1993 Lake Wales High School baseball team is the best overall athletic team in Polk County history. Around three-quarters of the 1993 team held a reunion for the first time since winning the 3A state championship 25 years ago. It was the first state championship in LWHS history and first county school to win a state championship in baseball since the 1950s. Campbell said he felt like a surrogate father to the team.

Kurtis Flanders hopes that will be the case. A fundraiser event for the Lake Ina Mushroom project will be held on Sunday, March 4 at the Lake Silver/Martin Luther King Jr. Park. Sponsored by a partnership between Growing Positivity, the Cypress Gardens Ski Show team, and Side Street Studio, the event featured ski show performances, drum circles, concessions, art raffle and live music. “We are looking forward to to the community coming out to support us in bringing back the historic landmark,” says Flanders, founder of Growing Positivity, a young creatives group which dedicates themselves to networking, good works and positive contributions to the community.

Polk County Manager Jim Freeman made an announcement at the Polk County Board of County Commissioners meeting Feb. 6. After 12 years serving as Polk County Emergency Management Director, Pete McNally retired Feb. 1. Freeman nominated Paul Womble to take his place.

Womble has been a Polk County Emergency Management program director for the past 12 years and has 20 years of experience working in the field.

Womble is a certified emergency manager and has a BS in Public Safety Administration from St. Petersburg College. “It’s an honor,” Womble told the commission. “It’s a long career goal to reach today.”

The last piece of the Lake Ina Mushroom will be on display at the Winter Haven Museum.

The City of Lake Alfred has qualified two candidates for the upcoming election. Jack C. Dearmin (Incumbent), will be running against Brent C. Eden.

The Municipal Election will be held Tuesday, April 3, at City Hall; 120 East Pomelo Street, Lake Alfred from 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. One seat is open on the City Commission for a term of 4 years. Lake Alfred City Commission candidates run at large, rather than by seats. Any qualified candidate can run for any position available on the Commission. The candidate receiving the highest amount of votes will be elected to serve on the City Commission with the induction ceremony scheduled for Monday, May 7.

Faculty and students at Florida Polytechnic University are developing a critical component for the next generation of spacesuits that will not only make astronauts more comfortable and efficient, but will also keep them happy. Depression is a major problem in space for astronauts, due to insufficient exercise, excessive exposure to light and lack of sleep. Florida Poly professors Dr. Arman Sargolzaei, Dr. Melba Horton, and Computer Science student James Holland, introduced Smart Sensory Skin (S3) to detect emotional and physical deficiencies in astronauts through wireless sensors and adjust their environment.

Mr. Aviation Comes To Winter Haven The former airport director for Lake Wales Airport spread his wings and flew to a larger task: Airport Director of Winter Haven Regional Airport. Alex Vacha accepted the offer, as he says, one that he could not refuse.

Vacha and Winter Haven’s former airport director, Leo Treggi, knew each other, and he says he “knew that there was an opportunity.”

“Winter Haven has a great platform and is right on the cusp of taking it to the next level,” he said.

“I am really optimistic about the sea plane activity as headquarters move in, it will boom even more.”

Music on Canvas at Lake Wales Arts Council An electric fusion of two local artists will be available for public viewing at Lake Wales Arts Council’s upcoming exhibit entitled, Music on Canvas. The exhibit brings together painter Robert Morrissey, and photographer Calder Wilson, with a common theme in their work–music.

being the Director of a cultural arts center, as well as President and Vice President of different art associations and even founded his own art festival which he oversaw for twenty years.

A frame and gallery shop owner, Morrissey also taught art at Polk State College for many years.

Starting with crayons, Robert Morrissey has been interested in art since childhood. The self-taught artist remembers, “We didn’t have any art classes or anything like that.

We didn’t have any type of art all the way through high school, there was nothing there. Everything I did until I got to college was on my own.”

Morrissey’s counterpart for Music on Canvas, Calder Wilson, captures music icons and shows in a different way. Born and raised in Winter Haven, Wilson studied at Skidmore College in Upstate New York as a business major with a minor in photography.

Though he has done work with a variety of subjects from oranges to nature scenes, the work that will be displayed for Music on Canvas will be music icons. The first icon he painted was Jennifer Lopez. “That’s what I was doing, called a hard edge painting where the edges are pretty distinct and separate between colors.

Almost like a paint by numbers,” he explained about the painting.

When he started doing softer edge painting, his first subject was Jimi Hendrix. “I like doing things like that with Jimi Hendrix or Bob Marley or Rod Stewart–people that are kind of wild,” said the painter.

An accomplished artist with a Double Master’s Degree in Fine Arts, Mr. Morrissey has shown his work from Winter Park, South Miami, Festival of the States, Gasparilla Art Festival, Butler Art Institute, and the Society of Four Arts in West Palm Beach. He has also exhibited one-man shows from Naples, to Tampa, and Chicago. His background with the Arts includes

In response to this underdeveloped area, he created a company, aLIVE Coverage, that has grown to include 12 photographers and has become the premier photography team worldwide for music festivals.

When Calder was approached by the Lake Wales Arts Council to show his work alongside Robert Morrissey, he liked the idea. “Obviously you get a shot on Instagram or Facebook and it reaches a lot more people maybe, but the ability to actually put art into the community and into the city is awesome. I always take every opportunity with that,” remarked the photographer.

“Photography quickly became a passion freshman year,” he explained.

Wilson started with traditional photography and eventually transitioned into digital. After this hobby began taking all of his free time in college, he knew that upon graduating, he wanted to make it a profession.

The juxtaposition between the two artists couldn’t be starker, but looking at their work side by side is an interesting peek into the mind of both creators. Wilson commented on their contrasting pieces, “He’s got these really cool paintings of classic rock stars and I have kind of what I would think is at the opposite end of the spectrum for that which is these metallic, metal prints of electronic music–it’s just completely different.”

Wilson quickly found opportunity in a niche of photography that he saw as underserved. “You have this explosion of music festivals happening since 2011, with electronic music, in particular, being the driver of it. There’s a lot of money going into it–sponsors pilling in, a lot of fans. At the exact same time, we’ve had the advent of Instagram and Facebook flooding people’s smartphones and they’re constantly scrolling through their phones. They need more content every day,” said Wilson.

The exhibit opens on March 5th in the Michael Crews Gallery, running through April 13th. Both artists will be in attendance at the opening reception on March 8th from 5 pm to 7 pm. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 10 am to 4 pm and there is no admission charge.

SHOP TILL YOU DROP We Costume and Production Designed a feature film called “Darcy.” Darcy’s parents own a motel where she works during summer break doing housekeeping. Darcy works hard and never gets a day off. As she is folding sheets and making beds, she dreams of this “perfect day off” She’d go into town, go out to lunch, see a movie, get ice cream and go to the boutique thrift store. She got some courage and decided to ask for a day off. It was shocking because her parents said yes!

Her mom said, “You and your friend Luke better enjoy ‘Darcy Day’ because it’s only happening once.”

When we’re not working together on a film we run our other businesses.

Rarely, but occasionally, Nando and I will go our separate ways… He to the farm in Lake Wales and I stay home, updating the websites, reading a script or working on new designs. Yesterday, as he was headed south, he exclaimed, “I’m so excited to come home and see how much you got done. You always get so much accomplished when I go away for the day.” Then he smiled and winked at me because he knows it is true. I grabbed another cup of coffee and settled in at my desk. It was early but once the darn roosters start crowing, there is no going back to sleep.

Around 10 am, “Double Trouble” came knocking on my office door. In the winters, we have a Frenchman and a Canadian that stay here on the farm with us. The two horsemen told me it was time for my daily riding lesson.

Then, they wanted to go out to lunch at Tempo 1930. How can you say no to that, right?

I walked, trotted and cantered my little pony. I only fell once but it was right in a patch of stinging nettles. While I was down, She bolted for her paddock.

They made me get back on her to trot a few more laps. You never want to end the lesson on a fall, for the horse or the rider. You know the saying, “Get back in the saddle.”

Having definitely worked up an appetite, we headed to Tempo. They really have a beautiful view of Central Park and the water fountain. It’s a chill spot. Following a fab lunch, we decided to take a lap around town. As we were walking, the Canadian said, “Hey Sal, do you want to pop into that Meals on Wheels Thrift Store that you like?” I said, “I really should be home working but, twist my arm and I’ll go.” We stopped at the bank and the Canadian pulled out some cash. Frenchie is always up for anything. You’d think, because he is French, he wouldn’t wear second hand clothing. Somehow he always manages to find the nicest clothes in the thrift store and picks out the best dresses for me. Brooks

perfect timing to watch the sunset over a pitcher on Lake Howard. It’s one of our favorite things to do after putting in “8 for 8”: a long hard day at the farm or office. With my frosty mug in hand, I figured shopping is actually something I do for a living, so technically today I worked. While we were experiencing the magical sunset, I turned to Canada and said, “Man, my birthday is not until April 12th but, I feel like today is my birthday.” He said, “That’s good Sal, we all work really hard and sometimes it’s nice just to take the day off no matter where you are in the world.” That is when it hit me, it wasn’t my birthday it was my “Sally Day” just like Darcy.

Canada told me, “Get whatever you want.” and he grabbed the tab in the first store. Then they both said, “What about the Goodwill? It’s so close.” I usually find Goodwill to be over my budget, but it looked like money was not an object today. Off to Goodwill we went. I grabbed a few great pairs of denim and seersucker shorts for Nando. We also scored some button down shirts that I am planning to up-cycle. Moneybags was looking for anything sports related. He wanted “old skool” basketball jerseys, vintage sport uniforms and Polk County athletic team apparel. I found him a great pair of unworn kicks but he claims to be a shoe snob so he passed.

Nando returned from working just around the same time that we got back to the farm. He wasn’t disappointed at all that I hadn’t gotten too much done.

He was happy, because I was happy. I had a good day full of “research and development” with my creative team. #shoptillyoudrop

Now, while all of this is going on the Frenchman is running around with his little Polo sweater tied around his neck saying “Shop Till You Drop!” As I type, I am just laughing out loud thinking about it. I said the phrase several years back and now every time we go shopping he says it throughout the entire spree.

Mr. Shop Till You Drop managed to find himself a “Make America Great Again” campaign shirt, a pair of American Flag swim trunks and a military veterans baseball cap. He threw in a pair of Walmart flip flops.

Fifteen dollars later, he had a plastic baggy full of all the elements needed for an outfit that he calls, “Well American!”

So, when they suggested ice cream, frozen yogurt and Polar Pops, I didn’t want to be rude and say no. Plus, they were driving and paying. We hit up 3 more thrift stores after that. Frenchie talked me into a pair of super classic leather ballet flats that I would never pick on my own. The Canadian insisted that I get this traditional western style shirt with pearl snaps. He was obsessed with it for himself but it was too small and didn’t fit into his “sports theme” today. I get this natural high when I am thrifting. We literally had the truck full of bags and treasures from every thrift shop in Winter Haven.

At the last shop as I was modeling a super chic, crisp white 90’s trench coat, the Frenchman said something that I have never heard any Frenchman utter before, “I can’t take anymore!”

(This was coming from the man with over indulgence in his blood.) He said, “I am literally gonna drop. Please, we must stop!” So, the Canadian and I surrendered.

We had ten bucks and they had one last trick up their new sleeves. It was 25

The third show of their inaugural season is set in Armadillo Acres, a manufactured housing community in North Florida.

Artistic Producer/ Director Scott Cook lays out the details of this rip-roaring musical, “There is this outrageous trio of girls that takes us through this story.

Jeanie is an agoraphobic who lives in her trailer and can’t seem to get out. Her husband [Norbert] is a toll booth collector and they are coming up on their twentieth anniversary, so he’s trying to get her to go to the Ice Capades. Enter this crazy story–this stripper on the run, named Pippi and she needs a place to hide because her crazy boyfriend Duke, is after her from Oklahoma City. Unsuspectedly, Norbert, and Pippy fall in love. So now we have all this trouble in the trailer park.”

Cook emphasized the attitude the show takes towards its subjects, “I direct the show to not make fun of people in a trailer park but to have fun with them. It is a very warm and loving salute to some of the coolest people on the planet.”

Doing this show for their inaugural season just made sense according to Cook. “The show won us 13 international awards at the Orlando Fringe Festival in 2010 and ever since that show played to standing room only, we have been asked to bring it back so many times and it is literally

woman, but with a very loving, maternal side that she wants to care and fix everyone–and that’s kind of how I am, I want to fix everyone.”

Of those 13 international awards, Heather Lynn Mendoza who played Betty in The Great American Trailer Park in 2010 took home “Best Actress in a Musical.” Mendoza is returning to reprise the role she knocked out of the park 8 years ago.

“She just rocks this role, has a voice that could take the roof off, and understands the character, she’s so warm,” said the director of his returning actress. He continued, “I’m thrilled and beyond appreciative that she wants to come all this way to recreate this role.”

Heather, who went to school at Florida School of the Arts, now lives in Tampa Bay and makes the journey to Davenport because she loves the role of Betty and working with TheatreWorks Florida.

Heather Lynn Mendoza is the only one returning from the original cast.

For the new cast, Scott knew he needed actors that were “triple treats” because of all seven roles being leads.

The second thing Scott was looking for was, “actors who had absolutely no fear whatsoever and great adlib chops. The show is very interactive, especially with the trio, they talk directly to the audience and make them feel very welcome at the park.”

“That’s one of the main reasons I came back is because I know how successful the show was the first time around and how much fun I had with it. I wanted to go back and live in the trailer park some more, can’t get enough of it,” laughed Mendoza.

The theatre took a chance on this professional theatre newcomer according to Cook, something that paid off. As her first professional show out of college, Heather said, “It was huge for me when I won.”

She remembered, “When I got it I was ecstatic, and when I won, it was probably one of the most pivotal moments in my life just because I was being recognized for something I worked for since I was in kindergarten and it really made such a good impact.”

Cook says that TheatreWorks Florida is beyond amazed by the response they’ve gotten in their inaugural season, commenting, “We hope to just continue that journey, to keep bringing people in, to keep growing so we can offer more shows.” Though he can’t release the names of the shows he has lined up for next season, he did allude to it being a don’t-want-to-miss lineup.

In other exciting theatre news, TheatreWorks Florida has been granted $10,000 by the National Endowment for the Arts to launch their TheatreCares program, Vet

Scott Cook spoke about how the theme for this program came about, saying, “We attended the 4th Summit of the National Initiative for Arts & Health in the Military and it sparked such an intrigue for me.” He also noted the personal attachment he had to this cause, explaining that their company manager is a 25-year veteran who has served in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The project will consist of 3, 10-week workshops that introduce veterans to theatre. The director said, “ In the end of our project, we will write an original musical play based on all of their lives that will presented to the public, not only for presentation but also for education and awareness.”

Scott concluded, “The goal here is not to create a show and the goal is also not to serve the theatrical needs of TheatreWorks Florida, but it is to serve our vets and create a safe space for healing and we sincerely hope this is an ongoing program that will go on for years and years.”

Harborside One of Winter Haven’s most recognized landmark restaurants, Harborside, is situated grandly against the shores of Lake Shipp with its unmistakable red letters inviting hungry passersby to enjoy a meal on the water.

“We’re known for specials here,” said the owner. When you walk in, you’ll spot their large board of specials where they’re continually evolving and rotating.

Though their phenomenal food keeps guests returning, the view at Harborside is a paramount part of the one-of-a-kind dining experience.

“People come here because they want to sit by the water, they want to see the sunset, they want to see the boats coming by,” David commented. The restaurant is set up so that virtually every table has a view. When I spoke with David, for instance, we were at a high-top bar table in the very back of the restaurant that was on a raised area of the floor, giving us a full view of Lake Shipp.

David Spinogatti, owner of Harborside, described how he got into the restaurant industry saying, “Like many people, I started at a young age, washing dishes at thirteen and working in kitchens. While I was in culinary school, I saw that there were other people that were better with their hands than me in terms of cooking.”

He decided to go to Management School for Food Service and was educated and trained in the business.

Aside from their lakefront views and quality cuisine, David explained that their service is incomparable, saying, “One of the things that we’ve done over the years is be able to, as we get older, maintain and grow our core base of employees.” In the high-turnover restaurant industry, Harborside is unique in that the majority of their front of the house staff have been with them for three years or longer.

Four years ago, David was looking to purchase commercial property on the east coast of the state. With no luck initially, he got a call from a broker that told him about some lakefront property in Winter Haven.

Already an operating business at the time, David toured the property and closed on it within 6 months.

Harborside has been giving Winter Haven a taste of the sea, ever since.

From New York originally and growing up in New Jersey, David expressed that he loves this area, remarking, “I’m a suburbs smalltown guy, I happen to like multigenerational people in this area and the relaxed feel of this [area].”

When I walked into the bar for lunch, the seemingly endless view of Lake Shipp captivated me. After interviewing David, my friend and I sat at a spacious booth overlooking the water, watching boat after boat taking off or coming in to dock.

“We have a little something for everybody,” explained David. From appetizers, hand held items, aged steaks, and of course the signature seafood, you won’t leave with an empty stomach. Some of their most popular dishes include their assortment of pasta dishes, lobster bites, Mahi, Grouper, and crab cakes, which is a heavy crab-based recipe that they adapted from Maryland according to David.

First, we tried the Lobster and Crab Alfredo. A blanket of fettuccini in parmesan cream sauce with generous pieces of succulent lobster and crab came to us, plated neatly with fresh parmesan shavings and two crab claws on top. The ribbons of parmesan had melted slightly on the piping hot pasta, making each bite with the sweet, tender crab and lobster sing.

Their Lobster Bites, a guest favorite, and now one of mine, came out next.

6oz. of cold water lobster tail is cut into pieces, hand-breaded, and fried.

It comes served to impress on a bed of lettuce in the lobster tail with a side of drawn butter. Hints of the vibrantly red lobster peaked through the light breading, coaxing me to try it. Lobster bites with a squeeze of lemon, dipped in the drawn butter, overlooking the water–though I was only at lunch, it felt like a getaway.

If seafood isn’t your thing, we also tried their Prime Rib quesadilla dipped in au jus sauce with a side of sweet potato waffle fries. The quality of that dish was on par with everything else we were served–fantastic.

Then came the piece de resistance– crab cakes. Two lump crab cakes made with the Maryland recipe David spoke about, broiled with herb butter and accompanied by Florida key limedill tartar sauce. My fork slid into the soft crab cake and one bite took me to the northeast. I’ve had many crab cakes where the bread overpowers any hint of crab. Not at Harborside.

They have the perfect marriage of ingredients to make their crab cakes an addicting meal.

Certified Storm Spotters Richard and Cheryl Stallard Turning a passion into a public service, Richard Stallard and his wife Cheryl use their fascination with and knowledge of the weather to spot storms as volunteers for the National Weather Service. Born in Akron, Ohio, Richard was raised in Atlanta, Georgia and went into the military in 1965. Upon being discharged from the Airforce in 1968, the Vietnam Veteran came to Florida where his parents lived.

“The Obsessed Weather Misfits group and the page are what they call WRN Ambassadors, which stands for Weather-Ready Nation. It means we are there to help the public, to get warnings out. We post storm warnings, flood warnings, volcano warnings, you name it, all over the United States and overseas on the page,” said Cheryl. After moving to the Winter Haven/ Auburndale area where he has lived for the last 50 years, Richard became a volunteer storm spotter for Channel 13. He did this until the 1980’s when the channel was bought out by Fox.

When they started OWM, the group would take lesser known storm chasers and post their live streams for their members to watch. One of these storm chasers, Nathan Moore, the owner of StormViewLIVE and SVL Media asked Cheryl and 3 of her friends to become admins for his storm chasing page, which she did for two years.

Stallard described the process of being a volunteer storm spotter back in the day, “We had a number that was assigned to us and then we had a number that we could call into the station. They would call, in turn, to the National Weather Service in Ruskin to verify what we had seen. That way the National Weather Service could issue a severe thunderstorm warning or if it was bad enough they could issue a tornado watch or tornado warning.”

Richard and Cheryl are both certified many times over. They brought in a book filled with all the certifications they have related to storm spotting and tracking.

As Certified Storm Spotters and with everything Cheryl has learned from working with SVL, she talked about using her skills in 2015 when she and Richard were coming back from a Vietnam Veteran meeting. “Just as we got to Denton, I saw a beautiful roll cloud over on the side,” and wondered if it could turn into something. “That was a funnel that was actually rotating and was starting to drop.” They turned into a parking lot to watch the situation further and Cheryl called the NWS in Ruskin to report what she had seen. Fortunately, as they were speaking, the cloud “sucked itself back up,” but Cheryl says they were ready to chase it had it continued.

Richard explained that they did not have access to weather radars and other resources like they do now, making the job more difficult, but ultimately allowing him to learn meteorology inside and out. The WSR-57 was the first radar according to Richard, “It was black and white; your colors were gray. The heavier rain was blacker, the lighter rain was a gray color.” Richard has adapted to the evolution of radar since he’s first started working with the weather.

The Stallards brought in their laptop to show me the software and websites they use in spotting. Richard pulled up a program with a variant of colorful dots and lines going in every which direction over the state of Florida. Unfamiliar to me, Richard and Cheryl made sense of it all, explaining what each component meant, even showing me spotter beacons from storm trackers all over the state, including theirs.

The pair gave an exciting account of when Hurricane Irma hit Florida. The eye came directly over their house according to Cheryl. “The chase team had me on one of their chase channels and I was letting people know what was happening here in Auburndale area.” Richard got onto the National Weather Service site in Puerto Rico as it approached, changing sites and following the storm as it made Florida landfall, all the way up to Jacksonville. Cheryl, who has never been through a hurricane, described Irma as her scariest storm experience.

Cheryl Stallard was born and raised in Wisconsin, eventually moving to the desert southwest and 10 years ago to Winter Haven, marrying Richard. Cheryl too had an interest in weather, relaying that the petulant storms of the desert southwest mystified her.

When they’re out tracking storms, the couple takes their weather-ready truck complete with emergency and safety equipment and a dash cam to record what they see. They are careful to keep track of the radar to stay out of danger. Cheryl said, “There are a lot of chasers out there that push the limits and they got into what they call ‘the bear’s cage.’ Getting into ‘the bear’s cage’ can kill you. We try to stay a few miles away and if the storms were to change directions, we always have a south or an east way out so we can steer away from it.”

Cheryl has taken her fascination with weather online, creating a Facebook group and page geared towards weather-enthusiasts and storm chasers called ‘Obsessed Weather Misfits.’ The idea came about after she began watching storm chasers online and making friends in the chats. It was originally going to be dubbed ‘Weather Misfits’ until a friend suggested ‘Obsessed Weather Misfits’ which Cheryl loved. The group and page are both active and Cheryl says they are in the process of getting a website up.

As for the coming storm chasing season, the Stallards are planning on chasing in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, and possibly North Carolina. Cheryl exclaimed, “We want to travel since we’re both retired, if the storms hit, we’ll follow them!”

Grape Expectations He continued, “Most new consumers are going to want sweet wine. I start them on some sweet white and some sweet red and normally they like it. What happens over time, that same person in a year or two, they ‘re now reaching out and trying other varietals and they end up 9 times out of 10 drinking the drier wines.”

You can expect “grape” things at a certain wine bar in Winter Haven. Providing a comfortable environment to enjoy a glass or two, or pick up a bottle for a dinner party, Grape Expectations was the brainchild of long-time wine industry veteran, Randy Chamberlin.

Randy, who hails from St. Cloud, moved to Winter Haven after his daughter and her husband moved here. They found a home for sale in their neighborhood that they wanted him to look at. Randy bought the house and has since made a name for himself on the Winter Haven wine scene.

What wines strike the fancy of Winter Havenites? According to Randy, “In those two categories, red and white, Chardonnay is the number one selling white wine.

Cabernet is the king of reds.” His two top-selling whites are at both ends of the spectrum with a more dry wine, Chardonnay and a sweeter selection, Moscato.

As for red, Cabernet is the number one seller with number two, a toss-up between red blends and a semi-sweet German wine called Dornfelder, served chilled.

He worked in the wine wholesale industry for 36 years, saying, “I just always had in my mind that when I turned 50 years old, I was going to kind of get out of that corporate world, and so I did.”

If you don’t want to toast on an empty stomach, Grape Expectations offers a selection of light food. You won’t find anything broiled or fried, but you can pair your Pinot or Cab with any of their wraps, croissants, chicken salad, olive plates, or cheese and cracker dishes.

After becoming bored with retirement, Randy decided in 2008, to open a wine bar and thus Grape Expectations was born.

The wine bar is situated in a gorgeous plaza on Cypress Gardens Boulevard.

Randy said he chose this location not only for its pleasant aesthetic but also for its great location, bringing in plenty of traffic.

Randy’s sales and marketing background are being utilized to its fullest even after his retirement through the many events he puts on. He’s done everything in the past from a Little Black Dress event where all ladies in black evening dresses from 5 to 7 could enjoy certain foods and wines for free to a 2-hours event partnered with Eli’s Western Wear called Denim and Diamonds with the same premise only with western themed clothing. He even had a naked sushi event that sold-out of the 45 spots available.

“We have over 100 different bottles of wine here.” Their vast selection consists of mostly California wines with a mix of wines from around the world. Though most of his business comes from on-site consumption, some bottles are not available by the glass and only for retail.

An incredibly popular event that Grape Expectations holds outside the first Tuesday of the month from 5 pm to 6:30 pm is called Yappy Hour. Randy teamed up with Orchid Springs Animal Hospital to put together a raffle prize of dog treats and toys for the winning dog and a bottle of wine for their human companion.

Customers often seek out Randy’s advice. They tell him what kind of party they’re having and what food they’ll be serving and he helps them to pair a wine with it. He explained, “I do have customers that come in and they like to get wine from me because let’s say they’re entertaining at home, it’s hard to go to a major grocery store. Who in there really is going to know if asked a question about wine?”

Randy’s plans for Grape Expectations are to continue throwing creative events that his guests will love and to keep growing his already thriving wine bar.

As for the in-house side of the business, Grape Expectations stays busy due to its upscale cozy ambiance. Though the word ‘bar’ is in its description, Grape Expectations is anything but your loud, smoke-filled tavern. According to the owner, “I wanted to create something that is comfortable. What’s amazing is that even today, and we’re closing in on 10 years, 70% of my clientele are ladies.

They like coming here, it’s comfortable, this is not a bar atmosphere.”

Polk Senior Games The Polk Senior Games kicked off their 26th annual games on February 24th.

The PSG held an Opening Day Ceremony at the All Saints Academy Stadium with an Olympic-style torch walk featuring the 2017 Outstanding Competitors, followed by a track meet.

Games, it’s not strictly an athletic completion because those who perhaps have some mobility issues or are not getting around as well as they used to, can still play some games that don’t require any physical activity,” he concluded.

Duane brought in a yellow Olympic-themed shirt with different medals on it to show what volunteers wear, with participants receiving a white version of the t-shirt. Winning participants are also awarded a gold, silver, or bronze ribbon medal depending on how they place.

I spoke with a volunteer on the board for the Polk Senior Games, a tennis and cribbage participant, Duane Hopkins, about the origins of this popular event.

“The local games started in 1992 when Nancye Thornberry of Lakeland was visiting her brother in upstate New York who was participating in the National Senior Games,” Hopkins explained. Inspired by the event, Thornberry brought the idea back to Polk County where she garnered the support of friends and community to start the first annual Polk County Senior Games. For her part in starting the games, Nancye Thornberry was inducted into the Polk County Sports Hall of Fame in June of 2008.

Following the Games on Monday, March 12th, PSG will hold a Closing Celebration at the Youkey Theatre, RP Funding Center. Parking and admission are free, and friends and family are welcome. The night will have a health fair with screenings and giveaways, souvenirs, photographs, free goody bags, door prizes, special awards, senior community recognition and video highlights.

Attendees can also look forward to special guest, pro-golfer Andy Bean and entertainment from the 2017 Polk Senior Games Talent Show.

In its first year, the games pulled in 777 participants, a fantastic turnout for the new event. Now, according to Hopkins, the PSG has between 2500-2600 participants every year, with people coming in from outside of the county to be involved. Duane commented, “We think we’re one of the largest in the country especially for a community the size of Polk County, we think that’s something to rave about. Many people come to our games from other parts of the state because they think they’re so well rounded, we have such a good variety of games and events available.”

This year’s Polk Senior Games Gold and Founding Sponsor is Publix Super Markets Charities, the Silver Sponsor is Homer & Annette Thompson Legacy, and Bronze Sponsors are James W. Sikes Family and CPS Investment Advisors.

The sponsorship opportunities for PSG are tiered, including their Medal Sponsors, Special Event, Hospitality, Event, Friends of the Games, and Spirit of the Games Sponsors. Sponsorships for this year’s PSG are full, but they are always looking for supporters for next year. The window to sign up to enter the 2018 games has also passed.

In the Polk Senior Games, contestants compete by age group and in some events by gender or with partners. The minimum qualifying age for the games is 50.

Participants who finish in the top 5 in each event, at each age level, are qualified to go to the State Senior Games and from there can qualify for the National Games. The National Games take place biannually on odd number years, with the next one in 2019. Polk County Senior Games has even boasted national champs according to Hopkins.

With 83 events for seniors to choose from, there are a few that have become PSG favorites. One such event is Pickleball. What is Pickleball? Duane describes it, “I call it a miniature version of tennis, played in a smaller area with something that looks like a wiffle ball and a full paddle.” Last year, there were 210 participants in the doubles for that event and 152 in the singles.

Other popular games include Bowling, Senior Smarts (a trivia game), Golf Putt & Chip and Shuffleboard. “We have a significant number involved in powerlifting, about an equal number of men and women,” according to Hopkins.

The atmosphere of the PSG is one of community and sportsmanship according to Duane Hopkins, remarking, “We all like to win, but it’s friendly competition.”

He spoke on the importance of the games saying, “The purpose of all this is to get people out, keep them active in their senior years, and to promote not only their physical well-being but their psychological and mental well-being as well.”

He continued, “It’s also to promote volunteerism in the community. We have over 700 volunteers who help put on the games.”

Champagne & Shamrocks returns to Nora Mayo Hall

by Steve Steiner Special to Haven Magazine After an absence of several years, the Winter Haven Symphonia Orchestra, conducted by Virginia Davidson, returns to Mayo Hall for the 23rd Annual Champagne & Shamrocks gala on March 10.

According to Bill Siegel, who was one of the founders of the Symphony Guild of Winter Haven and one of its last surviving members, if indeed perhaps the sole surviving one, Champagne & Shamrocks has a special meaning.

It was one of the three biggest events in Winter Haven, according to Siegel, who listed the other two as being the Winter Haven Hospital gala and another event, Wine for Wisdom.

“Those were the three biggest events,” said Siegel. “These were the events the doctors’ wives bought gowns to wear.”

Champagne & Shamrocks began as a fundraiser for the Rotary Club in 1987.

While it was a big success, it needed a “hook,” something that would entice people to attend. Having gone to other events elsewhere, Siegel said the “hook” was making the event not just a concert but a party, a dinner party.

“It went over like gangbusters,” he said. But that was the only year the Rotary Club put on the event. Around the same time, the Symphony Guild of Winter Haven was formed and it took over Champagne & Shamrocks.

Not able to sponsor the event on its own, the Guild partnered with other organizations, beginning with the Junior League. Siegel wasn’t positive, but he believed he remembered it was worked out with Patti Bostick. Proceeds from the event were shared with the Womens Resource Center. The co-sponsorship lasted three years.

He went around to other not-for-profit organizations, such as the Winter Haven chapter of the Red Cross, which held its own event. Eventually, though, the Symphony Guild partnered with Main Street Winter Haven, then under the auspices of Ronnie Wood; today Wood heads the state chapter of Main Street.

Siegel spoke glowingly of her.

“Ronnie was very supportive,” Siegel said of her and Main Street Winter Haven.

“With their influence, Champagne & Shamrocks became one of the main events.

That was the heyday. It was originally a black tie event.”

Eventually, the Symphony Guild was able to stand on its own as the sole presenter.

He chuckled as he recalled the early years. Because bringing a concert featuring classical music to Winter Haven was novel at the time, Siegel speculated that at least 75 percent of the people who attended did so because of the champagne and the partying. Through the intervening years, though, it was the conceret itself that proved to be the draw.

Up until the Great Recession, the Symphony Guild brought in the regional orchestras from either Tampa or Orlando; the latter which now is defunct, Siegel believed.

“I was determined to bring in the best,” he said.

That meant a professional orchestra. However, several times the Imperial Symphony, based out of Lakeland, did perform, albeit sparingly, because its ranks were filled with volunteer musicians. For a short while a “niche” orchestra, the Lake Symphony Orchestra, out of Lake County, also made several appearances.

One year’s concert remains strong in his memory. He believes it was a year in which the Tampa orchestra performed. One of the musical pieces it played was Ravel’s “Bolero.”

The orchestra, he said, outdid itself.

“The audience stood up en masse,” he said.

It was a highly successful run throughout the years prior to the Great Recession.

People kept returning year after year, and sponsorship of the event Unfortunately, with the Great Recession, difficult times beset the Symphony Guild of Winter Haven and its season, not just Champagne & Shamrocks. Attendance dropped. Businesses and corporations curtailed their involvement and financial support.

One of the major financial supporters was the citrus industry, according to Glenn Thomas, a current member and officer of the Symphony Guild, and he, himself, a one-time owner of a grove, but who is now retired.

“It was tremendously big until the past eight to 10 years,” Thomas said. As regards attendance, Thomas added that not only did the recession have an impact, but so too the fact that other events now proliferate that didn’t before exist. “Champagne & Shamrocks was one of the few events in Winter Haven. Nowadays there’s a lot of music concerts.”

In addition to all that, Nora Mayo Hall was no longer available. A new venue had to be found, which turned out to be the Winter Haven campus of Polk State College, where Champagne & Shamrocks was held the past five years, according to Glenn Thomas, a current member of the Symphony Guild.

However, the past few years have seen a turnaround, a resurgence of interest and attendance for Champagne & Shamrocks, which got its name because the concert is always held around the time of St. Patrick’s Day. This year’s concert will be a particularly poignant one, according to Virginia Davidson, who will conduct the orchestra, which just as at last year’s Champagne & Shamrocks, will be made up of area musicians, including students from the Harrison School of the Arts.

The concert, as well as a particular selection will be dedicated to the memory of Michael Venners, who passed away suddenly in late 2017.

Venners was a driving force with the Symphony Guild for a number of years prior to his death.

Davidson chose the program with Venners in mind.

“I wanted the program to be something Mike would have liked,” said Davidson.

“In loving memory of him, there will be a very special arrangement of “Think of Me” from “Phantom of the Opera.”

Some of the other selections will include Aaron Copeland’s “Fanfare for the Common Man,” Fran Josefh Haydn’s “Symphony in G, Number 94, ‘The Surprise,’” as well as Ludwig Von Beethoven’s “Zum Ballet Die Geschopfe Des Prometheus, Opus 43.”

Of course, being the concert is tied to St. Patrick’s Day, “Danny Boy” will be a selection, as will be two new musical pieces, Irish dances, composed by David Davidson, the son of Virginia Davidson. The latter two, while new, have a “traditional” sound, according to Virginia Davidson.

About Champagne & Shamrocks The 23rd edition of Champagne & Shamrocks will be Saturday, March 10 at Nora Mayo Hall. It starts with a cocktail hour at 5:30 p.m., with hor d’oeuvres, followed by dinner catered by Terrie Lobb Caterers. The concert begins 8 p.m.

Tickets are $100 per person until March 1, and $125 per person after that date.

About the season The event, sponsored by the Symphony Guild of Winter Haven, is the third of the season, having started Sept. 24, 2017 with Wine & Roses, at the Gram Parsons Derry Down, then followed by its Dec. 9, 2017 Holiday Concert, which was held at The Center for Public Safety.

The final event for the season will be the Young People’s Concert on Sunday, April 22 at 2 p.m. (doors open 1:30 p.m.). It will take place at the Center for Public Safety, 1251 Keene Blvd., Winter Haven (off State Road 540, in the Polk County Sheriff’s Office complex).

The Young People’s Concert is composed of students of the Harrison School of the Arts and will be conducted by Rob Lambert.

by Ana and Andrew Gillespie. Ana writes the stories and the sequence of the clues and Andrew builds the rooms.

“The puzzles are a combined effort that we often come up with as a family on road trips or at the dinner table,” explained Ana. They offer 4 themed rooms with different levels of difficulty. A team of us from Haven went and tried the Cinema. It is not the most difficult, but it’s not the easiest, either. Ana recommends that beginners try the Speakeasy to start. That leaves the Asylum and Split being the 2 most difficult. Both of them offer a certain level of scariness, that the other two don’t. Each has its own background story with a specific goal you need to reach within 60 minutes. There are monitors in the rooms with a clock counting down, so you always know how much time is left. There is a seperate room in back where employees are always watching and listening to your room to help out if needed.

They also have a large conference room to rent. Ideal for companies to bring in employees for a meeting and then team building.

With that being said, we walked into a room, heard the background story and learned what we needed to accomplish.

And then they shut the door.

4 of us (first-timers) just stood and looked at each other.

The 2 that have done this before, frantically started touching and looking at everything.

The countdown begins.

The Escape rooms are part game, part team-building exercise. Sometimes, the answers require critical thinking skills. When there are 5 other people with you thinking 5 different ways, communication and teamwork are crucial.

Until you solve the clues to move on, nobody’s going anywhere. My advice is to bring at least one person with you that has done it before, so that you’re not completely lost.

As for our experience, we escaped with 5 seconds left on the clock. Full disclosure, you’re given the opportunity to ask for 3 clues, and we did. After that, if you want a clue they deduct time from your clock. I’ll admit, we had to ask for a 4th clue. As the clock counted down, the suspense grew and voices got louder. But we did it. It was so fun, I

Ana talks about what she wants for the future of the Escape Room, “To continue creating challenging and fun escapes for our friends here in Polk County. We are also very excited about our mobile escape rooms that we have been taking on the road to several schools, Universities and companies.

Some of the universities we have been to or are currently scheduled to go to are USF Sarasota/Manatee campus, FAU, Florida Southern and St. Pete College. We have also worked with schools where we bring our buildable mobile escape rooms and build them in a classroom. We are currently building an exciting new escape room concept and will be bringing it to Dennison Middle School for Pi Day. This escape will be custom designed for 6th, 7th and 8th grade students and be focused on math problems.

We are very excited about the STEM concept and incorporating it into our escape room.”

Some local residents are getting creative with the experience, too. So far, 8 people have secretly set up to propose in the middle of the game. That required getting in touch with Ana or Andrew ahead of time and planning it out. As you can imagine, the other person is totally not expecting it. Ana continued about a couple hiding a poem for their parents to find while doing the Speakeasy. “In the poem, the ‘grandparent-to-be’ will find out that their daughter and son-in-law are expecting their first child. We are so blessed to be around so much joy during times like these. Watching couples get engaged or families share such special moments like announcing their pregnancies, make us all smile while we are working in the back. It certainly doesn’t feel like work.”
