Letter From the Editor

It’s finally here, our biggest (and most fun!) issue of the year, all thanks to YOU! From June 1 through July 27, we asked readers to vote for their favorite businesses, and now it’s time to celebrate the winners. From restaurants to doctors to local favorites of every kind, we’ve tallied the votes and can’t wait to share them with you.

This year’s design features beautiful Liberty of London prints. If you’ve followed us before, you know we love weaving art into our Best Of issue. Liberty of London, founded by Arthur Lasenby Liberty in 1875, became especially loved during the Art Nouveau era, so it felt like the perfect choice for a touch of timeless style.

Don’t miss our Top Ten lists and swing by GoPolkGo.com for all the happenings this month. Hope to see you out and about!

LOCAL NEWS

$1 MILLION TAX PROPOSAL FOR TEACHER PAY

After months of planning, the Polk County School Board has unveiled a referendum it wants to put before voters in the next general election. The four-year property tax increase would levy an additional $1 million in ad valorem property taxes for four years, and would allocate 80% of the revenue to salary increases for teachers and school-based staff, while allowing the other 20% to school programs. It would also share proceeds with charter schools (as required by law) and create a 14-member citizens’ oversight committee to monitor spending. Property taxes are calculated using a millage rate. One mill is equal to $1 in property tax levied per $1,000 of a property’s assessed value. The school district has struggled to recruit and retain teachers, and one of the reasons often cited is low pay.

WILDA, A 39-YEAR-OLD PARROT, LIVES IN ANTIQUE STORE

Standing about two feet tall, 39-yearold Wilda lives among glassware, vinyl records, furniture, lamps, collectibles, paintings, and artwork. She has lived at Lloyd’s of Lakeland on Kentucky Ave. since 1994. Wilda’s a scarlet macaw. Outside, a two-story version of her overlooks East Bay Street. She wasn’t always Wilda. She used to be Waldo. Before moving into the antique shop, Waldo lived in a home on Lakeland’s southside with previous owner, John Somerville. In the ’90s, Somerville took a vacation to the Middle East and left Waldo in his antique business in the same building where Lloyd’s is now. DeBats promised to take care of him. “We were supposed to just watch the bird for two weeks, and about three years later, when we decided to buy the building, she was still here,” DeBats recalls. One day, about seven years ago, Waldo laid the first of three eggs. Now she’s named after DeBats’s good friend Wilda Gould, who died in 2003.

PULITZER PRIZE WINNER TURNS HIT PODCAST INTO BOOK

In September 2022, Gilbert King, a Pulitzer Prize-winning author, released the first episode of “Bone Valley” and brought Leo Schofield into the spotlight. The podcast scrutinizes the investigation into the murder of Schofield’s 18-year-old wife, Michelle, in 1980s Lakeland. Now, King has announced the release of a book based on the podcast. He says it reveals even more details of his investigation alongside producer and researcher, Kelsey Decker. “Bone Valley: A True Story of Injustice and Redemption in the Heart of Florida” will be released on Oct. 7. King concludes that the wrong man spent 36 years in prison for the crime, although state courts never overturned his conviction. According to King, the investigation into Michelle’s murder fell short, and valuable evidence was overlooked, including the confession of Jeremy Scott, who said he committed the murder. Leo, then 22, was arrested and sent to prison for the crime. He was released for parole in April 2023.

RAISED IMPACT FEES SO DEVELOPERS PAY FOR GROWTH

City commissioners voted unanimously to increase non-utility impact fees on residential and commercial construction by up to 50% over the next four years — the maximum allowed by law. That will add almost $4,000 to the cost of a new singlefamily home, boosting the total transportation, fire protection, law enforcement, and parks levies from $8,627 to $12,608. However, the increased fees will still fall short of the actual cost of growth, leaving taxpayers to pick up the difference. Impact fees are one-time charges on new development. They can’t be spent to make repairs, replace aging infrastructure, or cover operating expenses. However, they do free up general tax dollars for those activities. A state law passed in 2021 limited increases of non-utility impact fees to 50% every four years, phased in equal installments, making it difficult for cities like Lakeland to make up lost ground.

LIFELONG LAKELANDER RUNNING FOR CITY COMMISSION

Terry Coney, a self-described “son of Lakeland,” has lived a lifetime of service. Now, at 73, he’s entering electoral politics for the first time. Coney is running for a Lakeland City Commission seat, District B Northeast. As of Aug. 7, Don Burns is the only other candidate for the post in the Nov. 4 city election. Coney served as president of the Lakeland chapter of the NAACP for four and a half years before stepping down when he announced his commission candidacy. At NAACP, he attended at least one city commission meeting a month (the commission meets twice a month). “It’s tough for me to think of myself as a politician, but people in those positions have to remember that they’re voted in to represent the people,” he says of making difficult decisions as a commissioner. Coney’s commission priorities include infrastructure to support Lakeland’s rapid growth, a livable wage for Lakelanders and youth engagement with the city.

PPA PICKLEBALL TOUR COMING TO LAKELAND

The Professional Pickleball Association (PPA) Tour is coming to Lakeland, November 18-23. The Veolia Lakeland Open is the first of its kind for the city. The PPA will take over the Beerman Family Tennis Center and convert the 18 tennis courts to pickleball courts for the six-day event. The tournament promises to bring top pickleball professionals to Lakeland. It will also host a side-by-side amateur competition in which local players and other amateurs can compete. During the tournament, amateurs will play alongside a new, temporary Championship Court, where pickleballers like Anna Leigh Waters, the best female player in the world, will compete in their matches. Visit Central Florida Sports recruited the event. It’s expected to attract around 1,000 visitors from outside of Polk County, resulting in an economic impact of more than $800,000, said Neal Duncan, senior sales and events manager.

READINGPALS TO SPARK A LOVE OF LITERACY

Nearly 60% of Polk kindergarten students enter elementary school lacking essential literacy and socialemotional skills like sharing, taking turns, and managing frustration. ReadingPals, a state-wide early literacy program that pairs trained volunteers with students from Voluntary PreKindergarten (VPK) to third grade, is helping to change that. The program offers a simple solution: one consistent adult, one hour a week, making a measurable difference. It helps children build vocabulary, foster trust, and develop early reading habits. United Way of Central Florida’s program focuses on children in kindergarten, to intervene early. For the 2025-26 school year, ReadingPals hopes to serve 492 students across 17 Polk County elementary schools, including seven in Lakeland. But it needs 246 volunteers to do that. They don’t expect volunteers to teach kids to read. They ask them to be present, to show up, and to care.

IKEA MINI-SHOPS COMING FOR A PILOT PROGRAM

Best Buy will bring Ikea mini-shops to its stores in Texas and Florida later this year, including the Best Buy store in Lakeland, at 4215 U.S. Hwy 98 N. This will be the first time that Ikea markets its signature goods through another retailer, according to a report in the Minneapolis/St.Paul Business Journal. Ikea will test its 1,000-square-foot mini-showrooms in 10 Best Buy stores, starting in the fall. “Texas and Florida make sense as a place to start” this partnership, according to the Journal. “Newly built homes are a key source of revenue growth for appliances and home furnishings, and both states are in the top 10 nationwide for number of new homes built in the past year.” The mini-Ikea shops will feature kitchen and laundry merchandise and will be staffed by Ikea workers “who will help shoppers on designing spaces and storage, and Best Buy employees, who can advise on electronics,” the Journal reported.

FL POLY AND OCOM LAUNCH FAST-TRACK MEDICAL DEGREE

Polk County has less than half the state average for physicians, dentists, and pediatricians — but a new partnership between Florida Polytechnic University and Orlando College of Osteopathic Medicine (OCOM) aims to change that. The two institutions have launched a fast-track program that lets students earn both a Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degrees in six years.

“With both institutions located in Central Florida, the program will naturally attract area students who are more likely to stay in practice in the region,” said Brad Thiessen, provost and vice president of academic affairs at Florida Poly. Most medical school pathways take eight years. This one takes six. Students spend two years in STEM coursework at Florida Poly and then start their professional medical training at OCOM. The program will be limited to 20 students per year.

CHURCH PARTNERS WITH DREAM CENTER TO BUILD SHOWERS

First United Methodist Church of Lakeland is engaging in a new partnership with Dream Center of Lakeland to provide public shower facilities catering to people experiencing homelessness. “As a church rooted in the love of Christ, we believe every person, regardless of their circumstances, deserves dignity,” said Rev. Dr. Charley Reeb, senior pastor of First United Methodist Church.

“This project is about more than plumbing and concrete. It’s about restoring humanity, offering hope and affirming that no one is forgotten. “We are called to serve, to love and to walk alongside our community in tangible, meaningful ways.” Dream Center of Lakeland Executive Director Michael Cooper said the new facility will allow his organization to serve more people. “While we are not a residential program, we don’t want someone to miss out on a helpful program because of access to basic hygiene.” First United Methodist Church of Lakeland contributed $17,000 to the project.

IT’S WRITTEN IN THE STARS

TAURUS

(March 21 – April 19)

Best at Starting Something (and Making It Look Easy)

September has you fired up and ready to get it done. Your to-do list is shaking in its boots. Just remember: not every mountain needs to be sprinted up. Pace yourself, you’re building an empire, not a bonfire.

ARIES CANCER

(June 21 – July 22)

Best Shoulder to Cry On (And Bake You Cookies After)

Feelings, finances, and family vibes all want your attention, but don’t forget you in the mix. Set boundaries like you set your Wi-Fi: strong, secure, and non-negotiable. Soft doesn’t mean a doormat.

(April 20 – May 20)

Best at Living the Luxe Life on a Tuesday

You’re craving calm, carbs, and cuddles, and honestly? You deserve all three. This month, beauty and balance find you in unexpected ways. Light a candle, say no to chaos, and let cozy be your superpower.

GEMINI

(May 21 – June 20)

Best Conversationalist at Literally Any Party

Your inbox is popping, your calendar’s packed, and your brain? Electric. September’s giving you main character monologue energy, use your words wisely. Speak your truth, just don’t talk yourself into (or out of) something wild … unless it’s fun.

(July 23 – August 22)

Best Entrance, Exit, and Everything in Between

You’ve got that post-summer glow, and everyone’s noticing. September brings big energy for goals, glam, and maybe a little gossip (keep it cute). Your spotlight’s still on, use it to warm others, not burn bridges.

VIRGO

(August 23 – September 22)

Best at Fixing Things Without Needing Credit

Your season is here, darling, and the universe has entered maximum Virgo. Plans, productivity, and perfectionism may be peaking, but don’t forget to celebrate how far you’ve come. You’re not just fixing everything, you’re flourishing.

(September 23 – October 22)

Best Dressed and Most Likely to Mediate Your Family Drama

September whispers sweet nothings into your ear, and you’re feeling it: romance, renewal, and maybe a new aesthetic. Whether it’s a fling or a full-blown reinvention, lean into the pretty chaos. Symmetry is overrated, follow the spark.

(October 23 – November 21)

Best at Knowing the Secret Before You Say It

You’re in your introspective era. September stirs deep thoughts and deeper connections. Secrets may surface, keep your intuition sharp, and your vibe even sharper. Mysterious? Always. But also powerful beyond measure.

(December 22 – January 19)

Best CEO Energy Without Breaking a Sweat You’re building your legacy. September’s all about leveling up, career moves, financial glow-ups, and setting boundaries like a boss. But don’t forget: even powerhouses need power naps.

(January 20 – February 18)

Best at Being the Coolest Weirdo in the Room New perspectives, new people, and maybe a plot twist or two. This month wants you to break out of the box you built for yourself. Be weird, be wild, be wonderful, you were never meant to blend in.

(November 22 – December 21)

Best at Booking a One-Way Flight Just for Fun

Your wanderlust is waking up, but so is your inner visionary. This month, your bold ideas actually land. Pitch that project, book that trip, kiss that cutie, whatever it is, it’s time to leap (with style).

SAGITTARIOUS PISCES

(February 19 – March 20)

Best at Turning Feelings Into Art and Tears Into Sparkles Dreamy? Yes. But also dangerously close to making those dreams real. September calls you to bring your magic down to earth. Channel your feels into art, goals, or something glittery. Your softness is your strength, don’t dull it.
