LAKELAND OFFICIALS POSTPONE DECISION ON BUILDING HEIGHT CHANGE The Lakeland City Commission decided not to decide just yet on what to do about an ongoing dispute over maximum building heights in portions of Central Lakeland. Those who live in the historic Garden District are worried about a proposed apartment building that would require the maximum height ordinance to change from 40 feet to 60 feet. Commissioners heard from residents about their concerns regarding possibly losing the historic flavor of the area, then voted to put the decision on hold until a later date.

DREADNAUGHTS FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD — ON TRUCKS RULE Lakeland Commissioners approved a contract with Project Redfish, LLC that relies on a public-private partnership to develop a food truck park on a half-acre, city-owned parcel at the northwest corner of North Massachusetts Avenue and East Parker Street. The city’s Community Redevelopment Agency will put $250,000 toward the project and Project Redfish will construct a 2,500-square-foot building with a bar and restrooms and and will develop an indoor/outdoor performance venue on the parcel.

The Boulder, Colorado company will provide at least one food truck per day, and will sponsor at least 12 public food truck events per year.

IKEA E-COMMERCE CENTER COMING TO LAKELAND DHL Supply Chain has closed on a Lakeland warehouse it will operate as an e-commerce fulfillment center for IKEA, a Swedish housewares company. DHL paid $42.5 million for the 520,000-squarefoot warehouse, which went under construction earlier this year.

It is located at the Key Logistics Center at 5300 Allen K. Breed Highway. The operation will take up more than 320,000 square feet in the warehouse. The company has indicated it expects to employ about 200 people.

The Lakeland High School football team beat Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas 33-20 in the Class 7A state championship game for their seventh state title.

Under head coach Bill Castle, the Dreadnaughts hit national rankings with the win. Lakeland finished 15-0 for the sixth time in school history. The team is No. 19 in the MaxPreps rankings, No. 25 in the USA Today’s Super 25 national rankings and No. 4 in the USA Today’s Southeast regional rankings.

Three candidates have qualified to run in the Jan.15 special election for the Lakeland City Commission seat vacated by Michael Dunn: Patrick Shawn Jones, Sara Roberts McCarley and Bill Watts. Dunn resigned after he was indicted on a charge of second-degree murder. Jones, 53, is a surgical sterilization technician at Lakeland Regional Health and heavy-metal disc jockey for WMNF in Tampa. McCarley founded the Randy Roberts Foundation, which prepares students for leadership through public service and scholarships. She was formerly executive director of Polk Vision. Watts, 53, is vice president for market outreach for Fintech Mortgage.

It won’t be long before Lakeland residents facing a medical emergency will have choices. In south Lakeland, a small, freestanding emergency room on Florida Avenue is now planned by HCA. In northeast Lakeland, a slightly larger freestanding emergency room just west of Florida Polytechnic University is planned by Adventist. And north of downtown, there’s Lakeland Regional Health’s massive emergency department with its pediatric ER and a trauma center.

GOOD NEWS ON JUVENILE CRIME

Polk County Supervisor of Elections Lori Edwards says her office will address voter registrations the way it always has — by offering the registration and passing it on to the state. In dealing with the issue of convicted felons registering to vote, Edwards has indicated the right to vote was restored by Amendment 4. The changes are not part of her office’s operation.

Lakeland Police Chief Larry Giddens says an “alternatives to arrest” program for young people who commit first-time misdemeanors is working out well. Recent Florida Department of Juvenile Justice crime data shows that youth offenses are down. In Polk County, there was a 22 percent dip in juvenile crime in fiscal year 2018 when compared to 2017.

The alternative program excludes sex offenses and offenses involving firearms.

HISTORIC HOME RESCUE PLAN UNDERWAY A Beacon Hill Historic District house may be saved from being uprooted with some love shown by local preservationist Gregory Fancelli. He got in touch with elders at the South Florida Avenue Church of Christ and offered to repair the house on their property.

It’s always a good time to do something that improves our health and happiness.

Why do we put so much pressure on ourselves at the beginning of a new year and make such grand promises about losing weight, going to the gym or saving money?

Statistics show that the majority of us are not thinking about the resolutions come Valentine’s Day when we dive into that heart-shaped box of chocolates. How can we change this?

What can we do differently? Here are some simple steps we can take to keep the energy up for creating new habits.

It will be difficult, you will want to stop. But don’t. Keep going! This is the year for big changes and we’re starting with day one.

Break down your big resolutions into smaller, baby steps It won’t be so overwhelming. You’ve heard the old saying, how do you eat an elephant...one bite at a time. Meaning, take one step at a time. Don’t let that overwhelming feeling ultimately be your downfall. Don’t let it stop you. If your goal is to lose 50 pounds, start by telling yourself you will lose three pounds this month and take it from there. This works with everything from growing your bank account to exercise. Start small with realistic goals and challenge yourself.

Commit to your goals Don’t give up! Focus on taking care of yourself, getting enough sleep, drinking enough water, and eating more plantbased foods that will give you energy.

You deserve this. Exercise daily, even by doing little things like taking the stairs instead of the elevator. Park in the back of the parking lot and walk. It won’t be easy and it won’t always be fun, but the outcome of reaching a goal feels better than anything. Keep your physical body in good health, too. Don’t forget your regular doctor and dentist check-ups!

Celebrate your achievements Did you reach a goal? Celebrate! Are you on track? Celebrate! Celebrate all of your small victories, if you keep moving in that direction it will turn into giant victories. You create a momentum and will keep moving towards your ultimate goal. Don’t undermine yourself, though. If you’re trying to lose weight, don’t celebrate by getting ice cream. Be excited about your achievements and show yourself some love.

Learn from your mistakes Know your limits! Set boundaries and stick to them. Don’t let the first setback make you want to quit. Sometimes we don’t know our boundaries until we are passed them. If this happens, learn from it. Do something differently. Are you feeling too tired to work out? Maybe you need more sleep. Sleep is necessary, it’s not an option. Maybe you didn’t eat the best dinner and you feel awful. Plan for the next time you need something to eat fast. Their is always a solution to everything, you just have to want to hear it. Also, find an outlet for your stress. Begin a new hobby, take time to meditate everyday or if needed or find a professional to talk to. Stress can sneak up on us and turn ugly. Help to manage your mind so that when the stress of life hits you, you can handle it gracefully.

Having an outlet for creativity, exercise, yoga classes or even cuddling with your pets can greatly reduce stress. Be proactive.

Be thankful This is my favorite. Be thankful, express your gratitude. We are quick to say the things we don’t like, but how often do we talk about the things that make us happy? Being grateful is more than just saying thank you. It’s about expressing your happiness towards someone or something. Be joyful and appreciate all of the big and little things in your life. By expressing love we are spreading those positive feelings around. Love will grow around you.

As we begin 2019, resolutions or not, spend some time to take care of yourself everyday. Read everyday. Laugh everyday. Stop for five minutes everyday and do something nice for yourself like pet your dog, go for a walk, create art, meditate or simply tell someone why they are special to you. Connect with your friends either for a night out or plan a weekend away. Taking time for yourself is rejuvenating. Make 2019 your best year ever.

AMERICAN HEALTH WEEK Our very best friend and business partner (besides each other and Sebastien and Jordy) is named Owen.

As he would say, “in a past life,” (he has had many past lives) he literally owned and ran American Health Magazine. He also had Psychology Today, Mother Earth News and Spy Magazines. Our business with Owen was not magazines but, Airbnbs and decorating his Hotel (from another life). Work or no work, January in New York can be a depressing time. The holidays are over, it’s a new year and it’s dark at 4pm. People, especially O, start reflecting on their “past lives.”

town. Everyone seemed to be eating fast food, drinking beer at the hotel bar, acting lazy and not performing to their maximum capacity both physically and mentally. As a result, Owen who is like the ‘Wizard of Oz’ and always conceiving grandiose ideas said, “Ah, umm, we should do “American Health Week.”

Similar to the film Fight Club, it consisted of a few basic elements for those of you interested in subscribing.

Even though he wasn’t a doctor or personal trainer… the man was definitely well educated on the subject from publishing all those issues of American Health and Psychology Today magazines. They covered everything from Why do Yoga vs.

Eat healthy No bread, nothing fried and nothing fast. We didn’t ever go to extremes of being vegan or vegetarian just light healthy fare. A lot of salads and bone soup. At one point I think I thought I was going to turn into a salad. Lol Side Note: Anybody that knows Nando and I knows about our bone 24

soup. We always have a pot of it on the stove. Beef or chicken. We swear by it. Whether we are in warm Florida or NY… year round its great. If you are sick or weak or lacking in nutrition or just want to be really healthy… make bone soup. We add plenty of onion, garlic and a dollop of Whole Fat Greek Yogurt. We actually substitute Greek Yogurt (it must be whole fat) for mayo and sour cream. Ok… back to American Health Week with the Big O… Zero Alcohol Obviously accompanied the improvement on diet was zero alcohol.

We typically would enjoy a glass of

wine or two with our dinner break at the hotel and are no strangers to happy hour. There was not time for parties. This was a rush job so we spent intense hours trying to get it ready for guests. That was part of the program: Work long days, work really hard and don’t stop moving.

Keep busy. Idle time leaves room for unnecessary food consumption, plopping yourself in front of the TV, distractions and laziness.

Owen is always saying and doing eccentric things. He said something during this week that I hear in my head every time I do stairs… “Never just walk up stairs.” Some expert in his research for a health piece told Owen, “Run up the stairs. See the stairs as a workout opportunity.” Previously, Owen made me laugh when he went stomping up stairs wearing what we call his clunky “rocking shoes” He claims they are a special posturepedic invention. It wasn’t until our “training” and him actually explained his reasoning for attacking the stairs that I realized he wasn’t just odd… we agreed. Nando and I are those people that run up the escalators and seldom take the elevators. So, there we were, changing our routines and habits and making new ones.

Books on tape We listened to books on tape while we worked. Owen loves Shakespeare along with all the greats. His Audible library is huge. We would bumble around working and listening to whatever the day’s flavor was. It became addictive. Owen even got headphones that could go underwater in order to listen to the books while swimming. Swimming with Steven King… how fun.

Exercise Owen’s father Ben lived to be 93. He attributed it to his daily swimming routine. Obviously having good genes will help. Naturally, Owen chose to do daily laps as his go to exercise along with his “stair running.” Swimming is so good for your lungs and blood flow and mobility of the body. Nando loves to swim as well. He did that or he got roped into my faves… Zumba, Carmen Electra Strip Tease Aerobics or Ballet. Well Nando didn’t do any ballet because he has two left feet. No matter what, we had to put in a full exercise hour daily. * There is an adult ballet class here in Winter Haven that I plan on attending this winter.

No Time Frame for American Health

Week existed. The duration was definitely longer than a week. It was like AA… one day at a time.

Each day it got easier and we got healthier. Skin improved. Figures improved as did attitudes along with a healthy competition. Nando and Owen both got weighed at the beginning and they had a bet going on who could lose the most weight. I can’t remember the outcome. Owen will say himself of course. When it was time…we had champagne to celebrate our health and the fact that we had finished the hotel.

Note: I spent what I believe to be my formative years working on and off with Owen. He taught me so much by following me around as I “dressed” his properties; educating me on many subjects such as American Health, how to Bulldoze, Fashion and Fishing.

Life in General.

He believed that a big part of what kept him healthy was having Jake, his Golden Retriever always by his side.

Jake was like a service dog, before they really coined the term. Owen has always been ahead of the trend and the times – hence the magazines.

Owen had always known the plan, once the hotel was decorated and we were bikini ready, Nando and I were leaving him for the remaining winter in Florida. Days after arriving in Polk County, we got a call from Owen.

“Ah.. Um.. Sally, what airport is Winter Haven closest to? Jake and I are coming for the weekend.” He missed his teammates.

Mr. American Health flew down to Winter Haven and conveniently contracted some unknown “sickness” called, “He was too ill to fly back to NY.” Consequently he and Jake had to begin “American Health Week pt. 2” – A month on the Eagle Lake farm running the hotel via FaceTime, listening to books, fishing off of the dock, and sneaking Nando’s mom’s cookies with fresh orange juice.

ART A.J. Green

The Power of Cosmic Nature A fascination with R.L. Stine’s Goosebumps books, natural talent, and a few hard knocks along the way have shaped 20-year-old up-andcoming local artist, A.J. Green.

At an early age, the young creative was so obsessed with the imaginatively composed and colorful Goosebumps covers that he made it a point to start following the work of illustrator Tim Jacobus. “I fell in love with the saturation and the color in his art pieces. The one I remember was a book called The Haunted Mask,” he said, rattling off a few other titles that stood out in his memory – Attack of the Jack-O’-Lanterns and My Hairiest Adventure. A.J. would sit for hours at the kitchen table replicating the covers.

Holding a conversation with A.J. today is effortless. He’s well-spoken and self-assured though communication wasn’t always his forte. He admits that he was an introverted kid and that art was an outlet for him. “Not only was I able to express myself, but the art eventually was able to speak for me,” he said. “Being an introvert, I was able to, in a strange sense, indulge in myself, and fall into myself and enjoy the things I did.”

A.J. sharpened the skills he’d developed drawing book covers by drawing things from his own imagination.

As he has evolved, so too has A.J.’s artistic style. He now does Pointillism, a technique using small dots to make up a larger picture. He has typically used graphite and black ink mediums but has introduced pops of color his work to “compliment the intensity” of his black and white monochromatic style.

Much of A.J.’s inspiration comes from films. He used to love drawing cinematic insight from the imaginative side of horror films and has become very interested in the sci-fi genre.

Aliens, winged creatures, creatures in humanoid form – his fascination with sci-fi comes from what he calls a “broader spectrum of imagination and creativity.”

He also uses social media to follow other artists. He examines their technique, color pallets, and mediums to modify in a way that he can use for his own art.

Along with his admiration for other artists, A.J. is also blown away by his own growth. Two of his most recent pieces hold a special place in the creative’s heart. The first, titled, Arzonnica the Skyfall, is a blend of mediums. “It’s just a beautiful picture of this humanoid female figure and I’m really interested in the female figure when I’m rendering it in the sci-fi theme. It is meteors scratching through the sky in the background and her whole world is about to be destroyed.

She’s holding this staph that possesses power unparalleled to anything humans have ever experienced,” he explained.

Another piece, Muted Maroon, is a stunning image of a somber man with an index finger pressed against his lips in a hush motion. A black and white piece, A.J. used pops of maroon in the moths fluttering around the mysterious man. He discussed the piece, saying, “The picture symbolizes motion. It looks like there are these creatures fluttering around him, but it’s silent.

It’s so beautiful – the eyes are really intense, the shading is really intense and it’s a black and white photo, and the only thing that has color are the red insects flying around in the background.”

Another advocate for A.J. is Kurtis Flanders of Growing Positivity, a program for creatives working under Art Ensemble. A.J. says he is amazed by what Kurtis does for the kids of the community and that he plans to become a part of Growing Positivity.

Along with these pieces, A.J. has been working with Jane Waters-Thomas, Executive Director of Arts Ensemble, on community mural projects. He just finished a project called “Wings,” a pair of angel wings on a wall in Haines City.

“He’s very much an inspiration to an artist like me, how he’s able to engage with these kids, how he’s able to engage with the future – because these kids are our future,” he said.

After completing his wings, A.J. began to see photos of people posing in front of them on social media. “It gave me goosebumps because these people haven’t even seen me yet, but they know me. They know me because they know my art, they’re interacting with my art, they’re engaging with my art,” he said excitedly.

Growing up in Naples, A.J. moved to Winter Haven about 2 years ago.

Robbed and held at gunpoint, his few years here have been colored by periods of adversity. He leveraged his struggles though and turned them into something beautiful. “Most of my growth happened in Winter Haven because of the level of adversity I faced happened in Winter Haven,” he said.

Green’s journey would have been much different without supporters in his corner. He named his mom and girlfriend as instrumental to his success and spotlighted older sister Laura. She was always there to encourage him.

“She would always tell me, ‘I know you can do better than this,’” he said.

That adversity shaped his dream.

“At first, my dream was to impact the world and impact the lives of many on a deeper level through art,” he said. “Now my goal is to bring out the creative nature in everyone.”

Laura’s constructive criticism would often make him discard what he was working on to reimagine something 26

He remembers a conversation he had with someone saying, “I want to just build a place, like a temple of creativity and love in the chaos of the normal world where people could come and heal and recover and tap into the greater half of themselves where they could release their creativity.”

“I call that the ‘Cosmic Nature’ within people – the beauty, the essence of who they are, the greatness within them,” he said.

He believes so firmly in this dream that he’s dubbed the brand he’s creating, Cosmic Nature.

Staying is the New Going I used to think I wanted to travel the world, but now I just want to plant my roots.

I think we can all over romanticize traveling, moving, and the hustle and bustle of being everywhere. I used to only dream about seeing every place I could, but now I know I want something a little different. Maybe it’s a little less glamorous, but I think staying might just be the new going.

Sure, there is so much value in seeing new things and experiencing different lifestyles, but I have to wonder what the point would be if there wasn’t a home to return to. I think we all need somewhere to plant our roots deep.

I have found the place I want to stay tucked between orange groves and alligator-filled lakes. I think you can fall in love with a city just like a person.

Maybe at first you’re a little hesitant, you are hypersensitive to the quirks you dislike, and you aren’t ready to commit to anything. But slowly, something changes.

That’s what it felt like for me to make Lakeland my home. I was hesitant to warm up, but the more I saw the community in this city, I just fell head over heels. Swans and all.

Now I tell people I’d be cool with staying in Lakeland until I die, usually they give me a weird look. But it’s just true! I’ve never loved a city so much, and I have never been compelled to stay in one place and plant my roots as deep as possible.

When roots reach farther, usually the plant is a lot stronger.

I can’t imagine starting a business any other place, I just don’t believe I would be met with the same enthusiasm and open arms as I would right here in little Polk county. My love for the city only grows, and for a long time I’ve been trying to figure out how to honor it best and how to dedicate a sense of permanence of myself to the place that has brought me so much joy.

A few months ago I moved in as a vendor at a Dixieland antique store called The Shop Across The Street where I sell my prints and some retro curated antiques. I was quickly met with family-like support, laughter, and a sense of belonging in their doors. And further, they somehow immediately trusted me and my creative endeavors, suggestions, and ideas. And so when I commented on the wall in the parking lot being blank, it took them no time to decide that it should be made colorful.

And so I painted this monument to the city I love the most. It’s full of colors, retro features, swans, citrus, and even an alligator. It was a creative stretch, as I usually operate on much smaller canvases, but I can think of no greater memorial to this creative city and something as permanent as paint.

January 19th from 10-2 we will be celebrating the completion of the mural by hosting a morning market.

You can expect vendors from Tampa and Lakeland with unique handmade items and curated vintage. Live music, desserts, and more will be out under the mural to celebrate this city that we love, and I hope to see you there!

Something about Lakeland captured my heart. Maybe it’s all the local small businesses with people I know by name, maybe it’s that people get up-in-arms about the swans crossing the road, maybe it’s the vintage neon signs that line South Florida, or maybe it’s the random mid century gems in neighborhoods throughout the whole city. It’s a combination of those things, the little delights that keep me smiling randomly and fill me with joy, but more than that, it’s this amazing gathering of community that is so unbelievably supportive.

Let’ s Roll! or if you’re in the mood for some fried tempura.” The most popular dishes they serve are the Teriyaki dishes made with the house made teriyaki sauce. The most popular roll is the Krunch Roll made with tuna, salmon, crab, cream cheese, spicy mayo (tempura outside) and eel sauce.

A couple of our favorite rolls are the Yummy Crumbly Roll which is spicy tuna, cucumber, topped with krab, spicy tuna and a tempura crumb mixture. Also the Hot Mama Roll made of shredded krab mixed with spicy mayo topped with tuna and sriracha. (I like spicy food, can you tell?) I also like to start with the garlic lime edamame which are simple steamed and sautéed soybeans with minced garlic and lime juice. Delicious! The chef has a very extensive background in this cuisine and takes no shortcuts, anything you order will be excellent.

Sushi was originally invented as a means of preservation, when fermented and salted rice was used to store fish for up to a year.

This was known as narezushi. The rice was thrown away and only the fish consumed. A later variant called namanarezushi invented in the 16th century, introduced the idea of eating the vinegared rice, instead of being thrown away, and this is still enjoyed today.

At 2 a.m. when most of us are sleeping, sushi grade fish is leaving the docks in Miami and being transported to Polk County. Sushi grade is fish labeled by the seller, as fresh enough to be eaten raw. It comes in different qualities as well and Tsunami Sushi makes sure to have the best, only purchased in small quantities, for its restaurants.

Tsunami Sushi on Central Ave. in Winter Haven opened in 2005 and Tsunami Sushi on Cypress Gardens Blvd. opened in 2011. Vinh Nguyen has been the owner until 2016 when Jennifer Rednock bought into the location on Central Ave. Together Vinh and Jennifer decided to open a new location in Lakeland. The location in Lakeland offers hibachi and ramen in addition to the regular menu.

“Offering the hibachi and ramen makes these dishes extremely popular, especially the swordfish and Filet Mignon hibachi,” Rednock said.

Tsunami Sushi’s menu is very expansive.

There really is something for everyone.

“The menu has a wide variety that will suit anyone’s taste buds. If you have a group and someone in your group wants to bring in something from another restaurant, we are ok with that too. We want everyone to feel comfortable and enjoy their time with us. We also offer live music on most Friday evenings. We hope to have music on Saturdays as well soon,” Jennifer added.

Jennifer ended with what sets Tsunami Sushi apart from other restaurants.

“Tsunami Sushi is different because we pay attention to what the customers want. We offer something for everyone.

We are very particular with quality.

We order fresh fish in small batches to maintain that freshness people know us for. Quality is vital to us. Just about everything we offer is made in house from scratch. We can easily accommodate to most dietary needs and are willing to make anything special for anyone. If we have the ingredients, we can make it. We strive to give everyone the best experience possible. Customer service is also very important to us. We just absolutely love the community around us and the people who live here with us. Our customers are become friends and family to Tsunami.”

Vinh has been surrounded with the culture most of his life and has worked in restaurants with a passion for sushi and the Japanese cuisine.

When some people hear the word sushi, they immediately think it’s raw fish. But that’s not true! Owner Jennifer Rednock explains. “We have lots of cooked sushi. If you like shrimp, crab, salmon, etc. we can tempt you with a delicious roll you’ll love. We have lots of raw and authentic items as well for the true sushi connoisseur.” If you’ve never been to Tsunami before, Jennifer has some advice. “If you have never had any Japanese food before, I can assure you we will have something just right for you.

CannaBliss CBD Facial To be stoned or not to be stoned? …That is the question

HIGH, hello, how are you? Weed jokes, I got ‘em.

Beep, beep, next stop – Relaxation No Stress Land! Well, that’s how Tracy Evans described her CannaBliss CBD Facial and she wasn’t wrong.

Owner and operator of Retroskin in Lakeland, Tracy Evans has been in the business of beauty for about 4 and a half years performing services from microneedling and nano needling to body sculpting and tattoo removal.

She became an esthetician about a year ago in order to expand her services. One of which is her CannaBliss CBD Facial using a line of CBD based products.

First thing’s first, what exactly is CBD … isn’t that like pot or something man? Not exactly. She left the room and I changed into a comfy terry cloth robe and snuggled in under the covers.

Laying on the massage bed in a dimly lit room with melodic pop song covers humming softly in the background, I stared up at the groovy lava lamp-esque light display she had on the ceiling.

Every product she uses during the facial contains CBD – from the gummy and cleanser to the massage oil and enzyme mask. The skincare line she uses is Color Up Therapeutics, a Colorado-based company.

The 60-minute facial started with Tracy removing my makeup. From there she did a thorough but gentle double cleanse with the hydrating foaming cleanser.

Next, she exfoliated with an enzyme mask. Tracy used a small pink electronic FOREO exfoliator to massage my skin while warm steam misted over my face. It felt like soaking in a hot bath. The steam isn’t just relaxing, it is necessary to activate the enzyme.

In between steps, Tracy used a warm moist towel on my face. She infuses all of her towels with lavender and mint and added CBD isolate to them for this particular facial.

She applied the nourishment mask to my face to sit for about 15 minutes. During this time she used CBD massage oil for an incredible, drool-inducing neck, shoulder, chest, and arm massage.

The finishing touches were an eye cream, face serum, and UV damage repair moisturizer. During this step, she used another tool called a facial hammer. Though the name is a little off-putting, the sensation was refreshingly cool which Tracy says calms inflammation and helps to penetrate the serum deep into the skin. “Instead of being topical, it helps infuse it,” she explained.

The facial left me relaxed physically and mentally.

Whatever anxiety I’d entered with had left the building somewhere between the CBD gummy and the shoulder massage. There was no ‘high’ or ‘stoned’ sensation, just bliss … cannabliss hehe.

Never fear gentlemen, CBD facials aren’t a pleasure afforded only to us ladies. Tracy offers beard facials (yes, even the CBD kind) where she does a facial from the beard up and uses the cleanser, oil, and beard balms of Lakeland based company Beard Booze on your beard.

According to the esthetician, the average lifespan of any facial is approximately one month. To keep that glow, she recommends a monthly facial in addition to a proper athome regiment. Tracy recommends investing in a good cleanser for your homecare routine. She personally uses the same Color Up Therapeutics line of skincare that she uses during her CannaBliss CBD Facial at home. She doesn’t stock it at her space but can order it for clients upon request.

How do I apply for a medical marijuana card?

What is it?

First, make an appointment to see a qualified and registered physician for the initial exam. Physicians have to complete the required training and must be registered with the state, find a list here: www.floridahealth.gov. If the physician approves, they put you on a state medical marijuana use registry. At this point, potential patients must submit an application to the state’s Office of Medical Marijuana Use, either mailed-in or online, with a copy of a state ID or proof of residency and the required $75 fee. From start to finish, this process can take up to 30 days. The cards expire one year after approved date.

Low-THC cannabis means a plant of the genus Cannabis, the dried flowers of which contain 0.8 percent or less of tetrahydrocannabinol and more than 10 percent of cannabidiol weight for weight; the seeds thereof; the resin extracted from any part of such plant; or any compound, manufacture, salt, derivative, mixture, or preparation of such plant or its seeds or resin that is dispensed from a medical marijuana treatment center.

Breathe In, Breathe Out A natural therapy making a buzz in the U.S. for years now, salt therapy made its way to Lakeland in September of 2017.

Ashley Zamzow who co-owns The Lakeland Salt Room with JJ and Cherie Miller, became a Respiratory Therapist because of her son.

Born premature, Ashley’s son was in the NICU and PICU and had multiple stays at the hospital. Her son’s respiratory therapists helped him tremendously and had such an impact on Ashley that she decided to go to school to become an RT. She first encountered salt therapy during a specialty round of clinicals at The Salt Room in Orlando. She remembers thinking, “I could have brought him here as a preventative measure to keep him from getting on so many rounds of steroids and antibiotics when he was a baby.”

Now Ashley and her co-owners extend this natural therapy option to their patients in Lakeland. “We’re all like-minded,” Ashley said of her co-owners. “We’re family oriented and we want people to feel better. That’s our ultimate goal here is to help people feel better naturally.”

What exactly is salt therapy? According to Ashley, “It is a natural therapy that helps alleviate symptoms due to any kind of respiratory or sinus issues – sinusitis, allergies, ear infections to more chronic things like asthma, COPD, emphysema, cystic fibrosis.”

Franchised out of Orlando, The Lakeland Salt Room offers three salt therapy rooms. One is a bright and happy children’s room complete with toys for little ones to play with, and two adult rooms.

Ashley explained that salt has three beneficial properties.

It is a natural anti-inflammatory, a decongestant or mucolytic, and is anti-bacterial. The therapy is said to help ailments ranging from upper respiratory infections, colds, chronic respiratory and sinus issues to skin problems like eczema, psoriasis, and topical dermatitis.

Salt therapy has no known side effects according to the RT and can be used in patients as young as 6-weeks old. Each session is 45 minutes long. For children under 6, a parent must accompany them into the room, but for older children, parents may watch them through a window during the session.

As it is an accumulative therapy, Ashley recommends at least five sessions for best results. If a person has a chronic medical issue, reoccurring sessions may be necessary. As a medical professional, Ashley urges that salt therapy, though effective for preventing sickness and for symptom relief, should not be used to replace necessary or prescribed medication.

Before entering my session, I put on disposable shoe covers provided by The Salt Room. This is mandatory to enter the room for the purposes of keeping the salt on the floor clean.

Natural sea salt covered the walls and floor giving it an ambiance reminiscent of the “microclimate” of the Polish mines where the therapy originated.

The room is dim with calming music playing peripherally.

Book lights are offered if you would like to read during the session. I took a seat in one of the anti-gravity chairs which are arranged in a circle around the quaint room.

Blankets are provided for further relaxation and to help prevent getting salt on your clothes. Ashley recommends wearing something comfortable and avoiding black as salt shows on it.

A light hum was audible as a special nebulizer began releasing pulverized dry sodium chloride aerosol into the room. Ashley explained that the particles are large enough to stay in the nasal cavity for 6 to 8 hours, continuing to work even after you leave.

There was a wifi password in the room in case I wanted to use my phone, but I thankfully left that in the locker with my purse. Salt aside, enjoying 45 minutes of uninterrupted quiet time was therapeutic enough. In fact, some people come in simply for the relaxation and anti-stress aspect of it. Salt is a negative ion that when breathed in helps the body to relax, relieving anxiety according to the owner.

I laid back with the blanket on and took deep breaths.

The salt was pleasantly drying in my sinuses similar to the sensation of taking a brisk breath on a crisp morning.

If you’re wondering whether or not this place is a hotbed for germs, it’s not. Not only does salt have antibacterial properties as previously mentioned, but the rooms are

also cleaned with UV light between sessions, a practice some hospitals have taken up to clean a room after patient discharge. Also, The Salt Room doesn’t allow those who are running a fever or actively have the flu to attend sessions to keep other patients safe.
