Downtown Lakeland has a new home for tastes from India and Pakistan. Cafe Roti has opened its new location at 116 S. Tennessee Ave. and introduced a new executive chef. Around the corner at 127 S. Kentucky Ave., a Lakeland couple announced they will open a Pita Pit franchise this fall. And the owners of Cafe Zuppina, 4417 S. Florida Ave., are opening a market next door to sell prepared Turkish foods popular at their restaurant.

Lakeland can reduce its homeless populationbyadoptingahousingfirst approach, according to consultants who spent a year studying the issue here. Florida Housing Coalition suggested the city seek private help in paying the anticipated $710k threeyear costs to implement their 25 recommendations. Mayor Bill Mutz proposed selecting top priorities from among the consultants’ ideas.

IKEA was lucky. Somebody already assembled the modern logistics facility near County Line Road that the furniture/home furnishings giant announced they’ll be leasing. IKEA plans to bring 200 jobs to the area when they move into 326,000 square feet of a spec warehouse in early 2019. The facility will supply nearby stores and should speed up delivery of items ordered online in Florida.

By the time local students returned to public schools in mid-August, the school district had found all of the armed guardians they were looking for but were way short on hiring bus drivers. By the second week of school, there were still 60 vacancies, and the Polk School Board was pondering easing the requirement that drivers have a high school diploma or GED.

Ray Lewis lauded his hometown in a rousing speech when he was inducted in the Pro Football Hall of Fame last month. “Lakeland turned me into an inspirer, a conqueror. There was nothing I couldn’t do!” he declared.

Lakeland returned the favor and welcomed the ex-NFLer home to a celebrity-filled celebration at alma mater Kathleen High School Aug. 25.

The effort to move the Confederate monument out of Munn Park gained momentum last month as the move won the approval of the Historical Preservation Board and Mayor Bill Mutz stepped up efforts to get dollars from donors. When city commissioners approved the move to Veterans Park, they stipulated that tax dollars wouldn’t pay for the relocation.

As the end of August neared, the city still needed almost $180,000 to reach its donations goal.

Residents were asked not to fish or swim in Lake Parker last month after an accidental cut in a pressurized pipe dumped an estimated 260,000 of gallons of sewage into the west side of the lake near Valencia Street. City lakes managers said they don’t anticipate lingering environmental effects since vegetation kept the spill from spreading.

Grocery and convenience stores in unincorporated Polk can now sell beer and wine on Sunday mornings. County commissioners on the prevailing side of a 3-2 vote said those merchants should have the same rules as competitors within Lakeland city limits. Unlike in Lakeland, alcohol sales will still not be allowed in restaurants in unincorporated Polk before noon on Sundays.

Look for a slight rise in your Lakeland Electric bill. City commissioners voted 5-2 to raise electric rates to cover rising costs to operate the utility. The typical homeowner will see an increase of $2.43 a month. Despite the increase, city officials like pointing out that Lakeland Electric rates are among the lowest in Florida.

Will you be paying more in property taxes next year? The City Commission will decide Lakeland’s portion of the tax bill after holding budget hearings at City Hall Sept. 6 and 20. They’ve already decided that they won’t raise the rate above this year’s $5.5644 for every $1,000 of taxable value. That will bring in 8 percent more revenue than last year because of rising property values.

Brunch

is a combination of breakfast and lunch eaten usually during the late morning to early afternoon, generally served from 10am up to 3pm. I want to share with you one of our family’s favorites, Migas. We lived in San Antonio, TX for a few years and picked this recipe up, it was so good we would not only eat it for breakfast & brunch, but we’d have it for lunch, dinner, midnight snack, you name it. Although it sounds odd to add tortilla chips to the eggs, trust me. It’s delicious. The best part about the recipe is that you can mix and match any ingredients you want.

Add chorizo, bell peppers, whatever vegetables you happen to have. (I apologize in advance, I’m not a chef. I measure ingredients like a busy Mom, handful here, handful there. It works with these recipes, there is ample room to experiment.)

Butter for pan One Handful of Tortilla Chips 5 Eggs, beaten One Handful Cheese (I use Cheddar) Minced Jalapeño (optional) Chopped Cilantro Your Favorite salsa or pico de gallo

Heat butter in large skillet over medium heat. Add jalapeño (if using) let cook for a minute. Add eggs, grab a handful of tortilla chips, crunch in your hand and add to eggs. Next, add a handful of cheese. Cook until eggs are your desired consistency. Serve with salsa. Feeds two people or one very hungry person.

I always make a side of potatoes for whatever we have for breakfast. Again, take whatever vegetables you have, I promise you, it will be delicious!

Potatoes pictured: Butter for pan 10 Baby Yellow potatoes, cut into fourths 1/2 Sweet Potato, cut into small chunks 1/4 Onion, diced 1/2 Bell Pepper, diced Salt & Pepper Microwave the sweet potato pieces, in a bowl, for about 45 seconds. This starts the cooking process, otherwise it will take too long in a skillet.

Melt butter in a large nonstick frying pan over medium heat.

Add all ingredients, stir and flip vegetables every few minutes so nothing burns. Cook until tender and browned. If you’ve got them, add sliced green onions and cheese on top.

“Faux Toaster Strudel” 1 Package Puff Pastry, mostly thawed Cream Cheese, softened Jam or Jelly (I used Strawberry) Sugar Egg Yolk, beaten Preheat oven to 375 degrees and line baking sheet with parchment paper.

Cut one sheet of pastry into 6 rectangles. Lightly score a line about a half inch from edge to create a border. This keeps the filling in, don’t cut all the way through!

Spread a layer of cream cheese within border, about 2 Tablespoons on each rectangle.

Add jelly to each one, about 2 Tablespoons.

Brush beaten egg around the border and sprinkle with white sugar.

Bake for about 15 minutes, until nicely browned. Cool.

Enjoy!

Polk State College’ s Fall 2018 Arts Schedule Features Entertainment For All Polk State College is kicking off another season of The Arts with a schedule jam packed with Music, Theatre, and Visual Arts events for the community to enjoy.

From annual favorites including FallFest, Arts Day, Polk State Music fall and winter concerts, and Polk State Theatre productions, to events special to the fall 2018 season, such as 11-member a capella group Voctave in concert, Polk State’s fall 2018 arts schedule is sure to entertain.

“Each season, Polk State offers a diverse, eclectic mix of arts programming that not only gives students, faculty, staff and the greater community access to quality art experiences, but also allows the College’s students and faculty the opportunity to showcase their incredible talents,” Program Coordinator Nancy Lozell said.

Polk State’s Winter Haven and Lakeland campuses are hubs for local arts programming where the

community gathers to enjoy highquality theatrical productions, musical performances, and gallery exhibits curated by the College’s talented students and award-winning faculty members.

The season kicks off on Sept. 3 with the opening of gallery exhibits on both the Winter Haven and Lakeland campuses, where Jesus Nieves will showcase art for Hispanic Heritage Month, and Alison LaMons will display watercolor paintings in an exhibit titled “Sign Language,” respectively.

Those exhibits will run through Oct. 11. The galleries on both campuses are open Mondays through Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Students will take over the galleries from Oct. 18 through Dec. 6 with a student art exhibition on the Winter Haven Campus and the “Capturing Cultures Photography Exhibit” on the Lakeland Campus, with both exhibits kicking off on Arts Day at the College.

Polk State will host a reception and awards ceremony on Arts Day, Oct.

18, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Winter Haven Fine Arts Gallery.

Polk State will also host in October its annual FallFest, which for more than 30 years has attracted thousands to the Winter Haven Campus to browse crafts from more than 150 artisans.

The free event also features a pumpkin patch, kids zone, haunted house, educational demonstrations, music, food, and more. This year’s FallFest will take place Saturday, October 20, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the Winter Haven Campus lawn at 999 Ave. H N.E. Polk State is also proud to announce a one-of-a-kind event taking place this season – a performance by worldrenowned a capella group Voctave.

Members of Voctave have roots with Walt Disney World and have performed all over the world with Grammy, Dove, and American Music Award recipients. Voctave has ranked in the top 25 on Billboard Magazine’s charts, and has multiple No. 1 songs on iTunes, Amazon, and Spotify.

“We are thrilled to have a musical group of such high caliber performing right here at Polk State College,” Lozell exclaimed. “Even more exciting is Voctave will meet with our Music students after the performance, giving Polk State students a very special opportunity to connect with members of the group, who come from diverse backgrounds and a wealth of musical experiences.”

Hey There Manly Men! You’ve got a job to do! You’ve got to choose Mr. Central Florida! I wanted to learn more about this amazing event and fundraiser. I asked current contestant and hopeful “manly man,” Jeff Conley from Publix Aprons a few questions about the upcoming show, a fundraiser for Central Florida Speech and Hearing Center: How did you personally get involved?

“I have been catering the Women of Central Florida Fashion Show to benefit Central Florida Speech and Hearing Center for the past 3 years.

After last year’s event, the women who run the event, Debbie and Danita, asked me to participate in the men’s event, Mr. Central Florida. I recently moved to Lakeland and decided to work on this project as a way to be involved with and give to my new community. This organization also has a connection to my company, Publix. In the 60s our founder, Mr. George, went to CFSHC for treatment, and also used the facility after his stroke in ’89. The connection to the community as well as to my company

both also influenced my decision to participate.”

Why do they have this event?

“The money raised will benefit Central Florida Speech and Hearing. This is an organization which provides hearing and speech services to everyone from newborns to seniors.

The services can include hearing testing, aural rehabilitation, hearing aid service, language disorders, fluency (stuttering), communication disorders associated with autism and much more. Most of the patients seeking services from CFSHC are unable to afford these services on their own, and are in need of subsidies. This event is to help raise funds for these people as well as for new equipment and more staff, (a generous grant a few years ago allowed the center to hire a second audiologist and increase the number of people that they are able to help).”

“On October the 4th at 6pm, at Haus 820, is the main event, Mr. Central Florida Celebrates Manly Men. Each of the contestants will be introduced and will strut the stage to music of their choice. Tickets for the event are $75.00 and include an evening of fun and laughs, (at our expense) and food from Carrabbas. All of the votes will be tallied and a winner crowned.

Contestants are able to secure votes/ point by doing things like touring the center, getting someone to participate next year and of course, raising money.

Each dollar raised is equal to one vote.

The final count will be done the night of the event and all votes from dollars raised and other activities will come together. Elect me. ‘Nuff said.”

Florida Dance Theatre to perform Peter Pan with The Imperial Symphony Orchestra The action-packed, whimsical nostalgia of “the boy who wouldn’t grow up” is coming to the Lakeland stage on September 29 at Branscomb Memorial Auditorium. The audience will steal away to Neverland in a production of Peter Pan by the Florida Dance Theatre in their first full-length collaboration with The Imperial Symphony Orchestra.

Peter Pan will kick off the monumental 25th season for Florida Dance Theatre, according to Resident Choreographer Stefan Dolbashian, and the lead up to this season has been with tremendous support from the community. “Having a very strong community that is supportive of the arts like Lakeland, is really one of the things that have kept us around for so long,” he said.

Dolbashian added, “Bringing back that inner child for everyone is something really important, it’s a great way to start off the year. Being able to expose so many kids to dance, and to art, and to live music in such a great venue, I think is going to be a phenomenal thing for Lakeland.”

A bedtime story essential in many a childhood, Peter Pan is a strong opening performance for the theatre.

“It’s such a great show! Being able

“Our Tinker Bell, of course, required a lot of sass, a lot of personality, a lot of spunk so we have the perfect dancer for that,” he said of Molly Ahler.

In a twist from the original story, Dolbashian thought outside the box with the story’s infamous villain.

“I wanted to do a really powerful, female Captain Hook,” he said.

Jordan Raybon will be filling that role with Dolbashian expressing, “She’s bringing a lot of strength to the character and I’m really excited for her to hit the stage with this.”

The cast looks to bring all the magic Peter Pan has to offer with Denton Gay as Peter Pan, Sarah Walston as Wendy, Devin Hamilton as John, Drew Travis Robinson as Michael, and kids from the community playing Lost Boys and Indians. Having worked

To keep the story’s enchanting feeling the choreographer said, “I’m trying to keep as much variety in the choreography as is in the story – having major action-packed fighting scenes with swordplay, and crazy jumps, and adding all kinds of comedy with the lost boys and the pirates. It’s been fun to have this very comedic experience with all this action and being able to create the magic with the flying in the show.”

With a professional rigging team out of Orlando assisting Florida Dance Theatre in taking flight, Dolbashian says that dancers flying through the air, accompanied by live music will be an “awe-inspiring” experience for the audience.

Speaking of the audible thrill the ISO will bring to the show, the Florida Dance Theatre is ecstatic to work with them on this full-length production.

“I’m really excited to do something full scale with them and hope that it’s the first of many to come,” said Dolbashian.

This epic marriage of local arts with live music and original choreography is something that Amy Wiggins, Executive Director of the ISO, and Mark Thielen, Music Director and Conductor of the ISO are also excited to take on.

“From my perspective, there’s really not a better first production for us [to perform together]. Peter Pan is such a timeless story, it’s something everyone can relate to. It really relates the story of arts and culture in general to the audience. It’s a story about imagination and childhood 28

and friendship. For me, it really just connects everything that we’re doing,” said Wiggins. “The other part of that is we have some tremendous arts and culture organizations in Polk County and I think sometimes, it’s easy, even for those of us in those organizations to take that for granted. So, by taking our productions, both the ISO and the Florida Dance Theatre, elevates the product and takes us to another level.

My goal for that is that it starts the conversation around the quality and the offerings of the arts and cultural institutions that we do have here in Polk County.”

Thielen added, “We’re always looking for ways to collaborate with the other arts organizations in the community and like Amy said, these are two professional organizations, two great art forms coming together with the symphony orchestra and the dance [theatre].”

The story promises to come alive with the accompaniment of live music.

“The way that the sound fills the hall is different, the way that the energy is created from the pit onto the stage out to the audience, it’s a completely different experience all around,” said Wiggins. “The connection between the audience and the art form is so much stronger when it’s live.”

SwantoberFest 2018 Oktoberfest themed event coming to Lakeland Well Lakeland, it’s time to pull your dirndls and lederhosen out of the closet. On September 22nd, The Lakeland Chamber of Commerce along with title sponsor, Suncoast Credit Union will present the Inaugural SwantoberFest!

Cory Skeates: Focusing on Lakeland’ s Business Community Lakeland’s business community has a lot to look forward to with Lakeland Chamber of Commerce president, Cory Skeates working to make the future of businesses in Lakeland more successful.

Skeates and the chamber held a gala back in March to help raise the funding needed to justify becoming a public nonprofit. The paperwork was submitted and they are currently waiting on approval and confirmation from the IRS. Once the chamber becomes a public nonprofit, they will be introducing some new programs.

Skeates grew up in Scottsville, NY to a family who was always interested in politics. He moved to Orlando, FL in 1997 after graduating from Grove City College in Pennsylvania. After majoring in Political Science, he attended Barry University School of Law until he graduated in 2003.

Some of the new programs for the business community will include mid-level management training, business 101 and internships. Mid-level management training will teach business leaders how to go to the next level of management. Business 101 will be a crash course in things that they should be aware of even though they have already established a business. “Our internship program is going to focus on early level college students that are in the process of figuring out what they want to pursue as a career path,” said Skeates. “It gives them an opportunity to experience several different professions and get a feel for the direction they want to go.” The chamber is also discussing whether to open the internships up to high school juniors and seniors as well.

While attending law school, Skeates worked as a legislative aide in Tallahassee. After graduation, he continued with the political aspect of his career and worked for representatives John Quinones from Kissimmee in 2005 and Sandy Adams from Oviedo from 2005-2006.

Although Skeates has never practiced law, he has considered it a wonderful background for everything he has done in his career. “I was one of a select group of legislative aids that could draft all their boss’ amendments and bills, due in large part to having obtained a law degree,” said Skeates.

Skeates is involved in several organizations within the community. At the Florida Chamber Professionals (FTP) meeting this past spring, he received his Florida Certified Chamber Professional (FCCP) designation. “At the September meeting I am going to being sworn in as the Treasurer of the organization,” said Skeates. He is also a member of the Polk Association of Chamber Executives (PACE).

In January of 2007, Skeates decided he wanted to try chamber work. He was offered the job of president at the new Oviedo-Winter Springs Chamber of Commerce.

After being the chamber president in Oviedo for seven years, he was able to increase membership from 200 to over 600. Lakeland is moving in the right direction now that we have him as president of the Lakeland Chamber of Commerce since 2015.

What does Skeates like to do when he’s not working?

He’s married with two daughters and they like to travel and see concerts. He plays soccer in the backyard with his daughters, as well as go to their games. Skeates also played soccer in college as well as baseball. “I always thought I was destined to be a professional baseball player, but injuries wouldn’t allow it,” said Skeates.

It is Skeates’ goal as chamber president to make the chamber a public nonprofit organization once more. The business model for the chamber will be changing to one similar to the National Entrepreneur Center in Orlando, which has brought several different organizations under one roof. “We really wanted to put a focus on education, trainings and other things that our businesses are demanding of us,” said Skeates. “We’ve hired a Chief Development Officer who has been meeting with our investor CEOs to learn exactly what role they expect the chamber to fill in future. Among the takeaways have been the need for partnerships with our local colleges and universities to provide opportunities for our investors and the community at large to obtain access to training and education. Addressing the gaps in our workforce is a priority and we want to be able to utilize community resources and collaborate with great partners, such as Polk State College.”

So, what can the Lakeland business community expect to see from President Skeates in the future? “We are looking forward to creating a culture of collaboration in Lakeland.” said Skeates, “By partnering with other business support organizations that have expertise in certain professional growth areas, our goal is to provide value to our entire business community while ensuring the relevance of all the partner organizations.”

With a goal to focus on the needs of the businesses in the community and the political background to help him succeed, Skeates has what it takes to take the business community in Lakeland to the next level.

Julie Townsend Public service is a common theme in Julie Townsend’s life.

She jokes that whether she’s at work or not, she’s always working. And, in her position as Executive Director of the LDDA (Lakeland Downtown Development Authority), that’s exactly the dedication that is needed to truly be an advocate for downtown Lakeland businesses.

The LDDA reasoned that if they gave people a reason to come downtown other than the shops and restaurants, then they would inevitably patron those same shops, restaurants, and businesses.

Julie said, “Over the last 15 years, between the Farmers Market and First Friday, those two events have really changed the dynamics of what people think about downtown. They came for First Friday, they came to the Farmer’s Market, and then they realized downtown has really changed.”

Originally from New Orleans, Louisiana, Julie and her husband moved to Lakeland in 1999. She has worked in and around downtown Lakeland in one capacity or another since 2001, first getting involved on the Downtown Lakeland Partnership events committee, eventually becoming a board member. She later worked at the Lakeland Ledger as an advertising representative.

What makes Lakeland such a great place to live and do business? Julie attributes it to the size, saying it’s big enough that is feels like you live in a city with all the amenities from parks, restaurants, art organizations, an orchestra, and community theatre. It’s not so big though that the community feel is lost. “I think Lakeland has everything that people need,” she added.

Eventually, she began working for Lakeland Downtown Partnership before being hired with the LDDA in 2014, where she now serves as the Executive Director.

“Being in the community of downtown was always appealing to me. I think small businesses are the backbone of this country so helping them, working with them, understanding what their needs are and trying to get them to work together cooperatively, was just something I had a passion for,” said Julie.

While she loves all of Lakeland, she thinks downtown is the best, saying, “I think our downtown reflects a greater community, in terms of just of a diverse group of different types of businesses, female owners, different cultures you can experience downtown. It’s a good reflection of the community as a whole.”

Julie explained that the LDDA is a special taxing authority. In a special taxing district, there is a geographic boundary, properties within that boundary pay an additional millage on top of the normal property taxes that they are already assessed by the county, city, school board, etc. The LDDA is a line item on those properties’ tax bill. “Those dollars that we assess are what fund the LDDA organization and then we reinvest those dollars back into the district in various ways. We do marketing, we work with the city on identifying maintenance issues, advocate for certain types of programs that will help enhance the economic development of the district.”

Julie is married to husband Billy Townsend, a member of the Polk County School Board. She is a mother of three – Corinne who is married and lives in Colorado, Collin who is engaged to be married and lives here, and Ian who attends Lakeland Senior High. Oh, and her two pups Desi and Barley!

When she’s not advocating for downtown businesses, Julie is often running her son back and forth to basketball games. “My son is heavily into basketball so I spend most of my time being a basketball mom.” Between that and spending time with her dogs, Julie serves as the Neighborhood Association President for her neighborhood association.

Her job specifically is to be an advocate for downtown businesses and property owners and to recruit new businesses to downtown. She works closely with traffic operations on parking issues, always trying to develop programs and policies that will enhance the public’s ability to park downtown, “To encourage people to come downtown and shop, eat, and do business.”

The LDDA Executive Director has a vision for the future of downtown Lakeland. She would like to see more buildings go up both business and residential, creating density for the area. “I think anytime you go to a place, you want to be able to spend many hours there, if you so choose. So, the more things there are to do, the more reasons people will have to come to downtown and spend more time and discover all the various businesses.”

In line with that effort to encourage people to discover their downtown, the LDDA started the Lakeland Downtown Farmers Curb Market 15 years ago.

According to the Executive Director, “The reason it was started was as part of that marketing responsibility of ‘how do we improve the economic activity downtown?’”

History, Horseshoes, and Happily Ever After White Horse Ranch is many things – steeped in history and old Florida charm, stories from owners past and present, a memory, a friendship. The 80+ acre fully functioning horse ranch has an easy going feeling that makes it an ideal backdrop for a happy memory or two for the brides and grooms that wed there.

“Built by the hands of friendship” is the tagline of the ranch according to Hannah, now the Venue Manager, a sentiment that rings true in every detail of the ranch.

Michelle was a single mom raising three boys there, so it was always them and their friends building – fence post by fence post, plank by plank – into what it is today.

The year 1963 is significant for White Horse Ranch and its owner, Michelle Stagner. Not only is it the year Michelle was born, it is also the year that Dr. Yates purchased the land. According to Michelle, the original owner of the ranch had around 1000 acres. Fresh out of ophthalmology school and money, Dr. Yates saw the property and had to have it. The owner struck a deal with him that he could have the portion he wanted if he could find a buyer for the rest of the 1000 acres.

One of the barns was rebuilt partially from an old barn they deconstructed in Ocala. “Part of the barn here has wood in it that’s one hundred and twenty something years old now.”

Michelle grew up not far from the property and fell in love with it. When she was in her early twenties and saw the land up for sale, she went to Dr. Yates to strike a deal.

In the same spot that the good doctor was in himself all those years ago, he too granted Michelle the same opportunity he had been given by the original owner. She found a buyer, put together a deal, and the rest, as they say, is history.

The name, just like everything else on the ranch, comes with a story. “I had a horse as a little girl, my grandmother bought her for me. She was a white horse, named Candy and she died, that’s how we came to name the ranch White Horse Ranch. That’s what started all this,” she smiled. “A white horse and a little girl.”

For the past 30 years, Michelle has thrown parties and events at the ranch. Everyone told her she should open it up as an event venue.

One day, about a year and a half ago, she was shopping for Christmas decorations for the ranch when she (literally) ran into Cindy Duggan. The two began talking and through their conversation uncovered that Cindy was a veteran in the event industry and had a daughter, Hannah Cummings, who was graduating from Rosen College of Hospitality Management where she studied Event Management and Hospitality. Michelle said she was tooling with the idea of opening her ranch as a venue.

Later that night, Cindy called Hannah only to find out that she knew the ranch and had spent time there as a teenager. “When the kids weren’t at my place, unbeknownst to both of us, they were at her place,” said Michelle.

Around the “General Store” which is a feed room amongst the horse stalls, is the fence that was put up at the ranch before her son was even born.

The shimmery turquoise windows speckled throughout different structures on the property are 1945 Korean War era, from Tiger Town which was previously military barracks. Michelle’s father came to Florida when he was recruited by the Detroit Tigers. “I found those windows after Daddy died, and it’s very possible he looked out one of these windows,” she said with a smile and the gleam of tears in her eyes.

“Everything’s got a story. Whatever it is out here, it has a story,” said Michelle. In fact, when Dr. Yates bought the land, he had to clear out pine trees that clustered the property for his cattle. When he did, he found Native American artifacts.

Whatever spirits may roam the grounds or stories that have taken place, Michelle said, “There’s always been something about this ranch that gives people an ease.”

That comfortable, calming presence whether it be from the warmth of Michelle and Hannah, or the spirit of the ranch itself, amongst sprawling horse pasture and romantic oak trees is a deciding factor for many wedding parties, charities, and businesses that book White Horse Ranch for their big day.

This upcoming wedding season, which for White Horse is September through March, will be their first “fullthrottle” season according to Venue Manager, Hannah.

Hannah and her mom Cindy come with the wedding package as day-of coordinators to assist the wedding party as well. Michelle and Hannah are also in talks to create a 3-day event package where the bridal party can come on a Friday for brunch, have the rehearsal dinner that night, the event on Saturday, and have Sunday to pick up any decorations or belongings they left.

The venue has space for 400+ people, and a main barn that offers 200+ covered seating with automatically drawn weather skirts in case of rain. The barn has stunning chandeliers lining the ceilings, rows of wooden pews for guests, and a charming seating area with antique-style couches. If you’re lucky, you might meet Gypsy, a friendly black and white cat that made her way to White Horse as a kitten underneath someone’s car.

Another ceremony area is an opening of Saint Augustine Winter Rye grass beneath a staggering of oaks. There is a gazebo for the ceremony where a bell hangs that used to be the dinner bell from Michelle’s childhood home.

For the brides to get ready, there is an onsite cottage with a large deck and impeccably decorated interior in muted shades of gray and white with equestrian artwork, making for perfect “getting ready” photos. The grooms have a suit of their own for the big day in a renovated tack room.

No need for a photo booth either. The entire setting is prime for photo-ops, from the tractor seat stools, funky antique couches, Frank Lloyd Wright bench, and rustic Chevrolet Apache truck.

Through photographic murals, videos, and a themed gift shop installation at the Polk Museum, the artists will celebrate and critique the eccentricities of their Floridian inspiration. The Federal Bar Stepping into Federal Bar Lakeland is a little like stepping back in time. But just for the right reasons. Designed with Prohibition style, appropriately I might add, because the building was built in 1917. If these walls could talk, they would tell tales of being used as a Post Office, an office for the FBI and more.

Lakeland wanted.

“We polled lakeland, and asked what kind of things did they want? What kind of atmosphere did they want to visit in the downtown area,” explained Stewart.

“We visited Tampa, Orlando, and we’ve been to big cities. So, along with the coolness of this building, the original brick dating back from 1917, we really wanted to bring that prohibition style to downtown Lakeland because there’s nothing like that here,” Kara said.

I think this reincarnation is by far, the best use of this gorgeous building.

Ten years married, countless travels across the world, Kara and Stewart Simm have talked about opening something someday, but the opportunity never presented itself. Kara spends an enormous amount of time doing event planning for local nonprofits. They run a business, Max Home Inspection, a commercial and residential inspection company they’ve had for over seven years. To say they were busy is an understatement.

There is a full lunch and dinner menu all day, with brunch on Sundays. The restaurant is kid-friendly with a new kid’s menu coming soon. You can sit in the front bar area and order craft cocktails and food, all night. (And take a selfie with Jack Daniels!) However, I think the real jewel of the place is the back. Stripped down to original brick, with natural wood moldings, modern floor and light fixtures, makes The Bureau one of my new favorite spaces.

Comfortable, leather seating is arranged like little lounges by the enormous windows. Giant plants dotting the room, a collection of board games to play, a second bar with the same craft cocktails, I can’t say anything I don’t like about this place.

While at an event for Emerge Lakeland called Rally in the Alley a few years ago, they happened to be standing right outside of the Federal Building.

Stewart, looking up at the space from the alley, saw potential. “I looked up and thought, wow, that would make a great event space.” They both fell in love with the building. The character, the history of it, they loved everything. Kara looked at it like a potential event space.

Unfortunately, the building wasn’t up to code, so they decided to let it go for the time being.

“We can use The Bureau as an event space,” Kara added. The space is very flexible and can be rearranged within an hour for a totally different feel, great for parties, corporate events, etc. Stewart continued, “It was a shell when we got it, we ran plumbing, electric, AC, everything. It’s 1917 on the outside but 2018 on the inside. We left every brick available to be exposed.”

Some time passed, and even though the Simms weren’t actively looking for a property to create a restaurant and bar, they jumped when a lease became available with this building. “Most of the design and decor was all Stewart,” Kara explained. And by the way, did I mention she found out she was pregnant, too?

I’ve got to say, they’re a power couple.

Stewart was very proud to say they had the fastest buildout in downtown Lakeland, taking only seven months when it’s typically 2+ years! Next, they wanted to find out what the people of

The gorgeous bars are made of poured concrete, weighing in at about six and a half thousand pounds, “It’s not going anywhere,” Kara laughed. While at the bar, try a Mule. It’s their most popular drink with thee best seller being The Interrogator, made with fresh strawberry, basil and vodka.

“We have a really healthy menu, people don’t realize or expect that from a bar,” Kara pointed out. The bowls are very popular and with good reason. They’re healthy and delicious. The most popular is the Blind Ahi Tuna Bowl made with sushi-grade tuna and a quinoa and brown rice mix. Stewart added, “we’re not being fussy with our ingredients, we’re not over processing. The food is regional, made cleanly.”

They do brunch, personally one of my favorite meals and activities to do on a lazy weekend day. Brunch is every Sunday from 11am until 5pm. Kara talked about the food, “We kept it really easy, biscuits and sausage gravy, breakfast egg rolls made with sausage, egg and cheese, Belgian waffle bites, breakfast tacos,” The Belgian waffle bites were so good!

Crunchy on the outside, fluffy and warm in the middle, made for dunking in maple syrup, kids love them, too.

Daily happy hour goes from 4-8, including the weekends, with half-price selections. While you’re there enjoying your drinks, check out the details on the bars. Stewart made all of the wood sections, including the Union Jacks on the front room bar, he pays homage to his home country. Can you find them? The purse hooks are actually old railroad pins.

It’s these small details that I love. It shows a passion and love for what Stewart and Kara are doing. I love the front bar, but Wow! I loved The Bureau in back.

I will be back for more brunch, more cocktails, more lounging, more just chilling out.
