MIRROR, MIRROR, WHAT’S THE NAME?

BONNET SPRINGS: NATURE + CULTURE

Mirrorton. That’s the name branding experts dreamed up for a community being built on 14 acres just east of the Lakeland police station.

A lot of locals weren’t sure what to make of the name.

But Framework Group, the Tampa company that won development rights and bought the vacant land from the city, celebrates it. The first part of the name pays homage to nearby Lake Mirror, they said; the “ton” lends a community feel to their 305-unit rental complex.

Construction begins this fall.

The urban dreamers planning a 180-acre private park west of downtown Lakeland have unveiled plans for a site combining recreation, trails, nature appreciation and culture, including an amphitheater seating 7,500.

The name is Bonnet Springs.

The next hurdle is raising more than $50 million in donations, grants and sponsorships to build the park, tentatively scheduled to open in late 2020.

The park has the backing of the Jenkins family of Publix fame; they financially backed the nonprofit Windsong Park Inc. in assembling the land, formerly a CSX railyard stretching from Kathleen Road to Lake Bonnet.

SEU’S ARMED FACULTY GET NATIONAL ATTENTION

Ruffs will be heard near the roughs of Cleveland Heights Golf Course when Lakeland’s newest dog park opens March 10. Dog Leg Park will sit on a shaded stretch along Cleveland Heights Boulevard away from the course’s fairways; parking is a few steps away. Another new recreation area is aimed at hikers, bird watchers and other nature lovers, but not pets or bicyclists.

Se7en Wetlands Park will be dedicated April 14, but gates are already open. Entrances at Polk County’s Loyce Harpe Park and Lakeland Highlands Scrub lead to 8.6 miles of trails along berms that separate wildlife-attracting bodies of water the city has used since 1987 for final stages of wastewater treatment.

Nine Southeastern University faculty members got weapons training from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office last year and were deputized as “sentinels” to carry firearms on campus in order to counter any armed assailants. Sheriff Grady Judd offered that program as a remedy on Fox & Friends soon after a troubled 19-year-old shot and killed 17 students and teachers at a South Florida high school. We don’t know if there’s a direct connection, but President Trump recommended arming teachers several days later.

Coincidentally, Trump and Judd had met a week earlier when Judd traveled to Washington to be sworn in as president of Major County Sheriffs of America.

A lot of people in Lakeland may have visited the cozy Richard’s Fine Coffees tucked into the Winter Haven Public Library and wondered why we can’t have something like that.

We will soon. Construction has begun on improvements at the Lakeland library on Lake Morton that will result in a branch of downtown’s Black and Brew renting 1,100 square feet near the library entrance.

The menu will include pastries and sandwiches in addition to locally roasted Patriot coffee. City officials hope the new amenity will expose new patrons to the library and prompt private investment along the nearby Palmetto Street commercial corridor.

A chainsaw massacre of the ancient Lovers Oak at the Lake Morton foot of Success Avenue was postponed by the one-two punch of Hurricane Irma and public outcry. Now city officials are planning a high-tech look inside the tree March 5 to determine if it lives or dies. Arborist Joe Samnik will use infrared photography to detect interior decay. City officials originally planned to remove the sprawling double oak as a public hazard after a branch fell on a passing car, damaging the vehicle but sparing the driver. The arborist plans to disclose his findings March 6.

Food bloggers nationwide gobbled up word that a new musical theater production spotlights Publix Super Markets founder George Jenkins.

Their blog posts featured an Instagram video showing energetic Harrison School for the Arts students singing and dancing in their debut performance of “When You Dream: A Legacy of Giving.”

The production debuted at the Lakeland Chamber of Commerce annual meeting and will be reprised April 7 at Harrison’s “Roll Out the Red Carpet” gala.

Two young women running for the same seat in the Florida Legislature fought a fierce battle via voters’ mailboxes.

Mailers portrayed one candidate as an immature party girl who might not really live in the district. Her opponent was pictured as a closet liberal who was soft on crime as a prosecutor. In the end, Republican voters chose Josie Tomkow, 22, as their candidate for the District 39 House seat by a margin of nearly 2-to-1. She faces Democrat RIcky Shirah, 64, in a May 1 special election for the seat vacated by Neil Combee when he was appointed to a federal agriculture job.

CRIME, GANGS LAYING LOW Police Chief Larry Giddens credits community involvement for a 31 percent drop in violent crime between 2014 and 2017.

Lakeland police reinstated “c o m m u n i t y - o r i e n t e d policing” after gang violence erupted, and city agencies have worked with non-profit organizations serving troubled neighborhoods. As a result, gang shootings dropped from 18 in 2014 to zero last year, according to the latest crime stats. The only blip in an otherwise upbeat crime report: Aggravated assaults rose 4 percent last year over the year before.

STAYING SAFE ON MEMORIAL BLVD. Alarmed by a high number of accidents involving pedestrians on Memorial Boulevard east of Florida Avenue, city officials are focusing a radar beam on both short-term and longterm solutions. To increase awareness, police spent a recent afternoon handing out reflective vests and stopping about 150 errant drivers and walkers. City and state transportation planners are working on some longer-range solutions, including specialized signals and barriers designed to prevent jaywalking.

Twenty Seven - Bring Some Sunshine Inside If optimism was a person, it would be the owner of Twenty Seven, Jenna Cherry, who turned a dark time in her life into a growing business that shares some handmade sunshine with its customers. Originally from Brandon, Jenna went to school at Lakeland Christian School, making the drive between the two cities for all 4 years of high school.

Now the self-described longtime Lakeland lover is going to college and living on campus at Southeastern University with one year left. Jenna is studying communications because she feels it’s a good pairing of the “artsy” and the business side of things.

Since elementary school, all things creative have been her outlet.

Drawing and painting have been more than a hobby for Jenna. They’ve been her saving grace. “It just kind of became my natural response. If I was having a bad day or a bad morning, I would kind of try to channel it into something almost to distract myself,” she said.

During her first year of college, Jenna was diagnosed with PMDD (Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder).

She explained that once a month she would have severe bouts of depression and anxiety that was affecting her life dramatically saying, “It took a really long time to figure out what it was. It was a lot of counseling, a lot of doctors’ offices, and trying to pinpoint why I was so sad.” Jenna continued, “It was a very dark season of anxiety and depression and trying to figure out what to do with that.”

She recalled seeing a wall hanging that a friend had made and decided to buy some yarn to make her own. “It just kind of turned into ‘Wow, one of the only things that really helps me, is making stuff,’” she remembered.

“Twenty Seven started because I wanted to make a mental health blog,” she remarked. As she worked on the blog she decided to put some of her creations online as well. She remembered thinking, “My products that reflect joy and hope and sunshine are more effective than my words because they go in people houses.”

Jenna chose the name Twenty Seven to represent her brand because of her favorite psalm–psalm 27.

“It’s just about being fearless and that you can grow to be a fearless person,” described the owner.

Another meaningful piece of Jenna’s life contributed to the naming of her business as well. She remarked, “It’s also the day, July 27th when my boyfriend and I started dating so we always have celebrated the 27th every month for almost 3 years now.”

Jenna included her other creatively talented friends in her venture as well, building Twenty Seven as a marketplace for herself and other vendors, with each person making a little something different. Currently, the community consists of Jenna Cherry, Connor O’Brien, Shelby Martin, Monica Beatty, and Abby Cooke.

The marketplace offers modern, cozy pieces including banners, hand lettering, macrame, wall hangings, hoop embroidery, paintings, pompom art, and Jenna’s adorable no kill cacti.

Jenna Cherry’s dreams for her business are to continue growing online sales, increasing their market presence, and adding more vendors to support other makers and expand Twenty Seven’s product selection. Her face lit up when she discussed her biggest aspiration, “My dream would be to have a brick and mortar store in downtown Lakeland.” She imagines it as a coffee shop/ home décor shop.

Twenty Seven participated in their first market in September of last year at Concord Coffee. If you’ve been to any of the local markets since then from Lakeland to Tampa to St. Pete, you’ve probably seen their one-of-a-kind creations there.

You can find some Twenty Seven pieces downtown in Top Buttons and of course, at any markets they attend as well as online. Jenna said they are most active on their Instagram where you can get a glimpse of their products in the form of the fun personalities involved in their community.

Rafa Natural In Polk County, the sense of community and support for small business is palpable. It’s not just for the sake of supporting a local shop that keeps Rafa Natural’s customers coming back though. It’s their handmade, hand packaged, small-batch line of organic skincare, candles, and bath and body products.

I spoke with owner and CEO of Rafa, Kim Hancock who explained that she was an avid customer of Rafa Natural from the beginning when her friend Kim Williams started the store. Kim Hancock started a shop, Simple Vintage with Scout & Tag in downtown Lakeland, bringing in Kim Williams with Rafa.

When Kim Williams got ready to sell Rafa Natural, Kim Hancock jumped at the chance to own this line of natural products that she believes in, and sold her half of Simple Vintage to Kim William’s sister and bought Rafa Natural. She learned all of the recipes and formulas from Kim Williams and has continued growing the store.

“I’ve always loved all of the products, so the joke is that I loved everything so much I just bought it all,” laughed Kim. Still at their location in Lakeland with a wholesale partnership in Anna Maria, Kim opened another shop in Bartow in July of last year. “I lived here a long time ago, probably 22 years ago or so and we used to always go to Bloomin’ Arts and I’ve looked at this building since my son was in a stroller,” explained Kim. After trying to lease the building since March of 2017, they finally got in on the first of June and began renovations to then open in July.

“The bones of this space are incredible,” said Head Handcrafter, Chelsea Carlson about the stunning space. “But what Kim and her husband did, it’s just insane. People come in and lose it over this store.”

She talked her friends into coming down to fill the building, revitalizing downtown Bartow. Rafa Natural, Top Buttons, Bartow Mercantile Authentic Goods, Fancy Flea, and Arts on Central have all come in with Kim, breathing life into downtown.

Even the name of their line of products is a reflection of their values as a company. Rafa, according to Kim is the Hebrew word meaning ‘to heal by rest’ or ‘heal naturally’ and in Arabic means ‘happy.’

Kim Hancock cares greatly for her business and the customers she serves, looking to the future with them in mind, “I think hopefully for the future that we’ll add a service component to the business.” With several estheticians already using Rafa products in their services, it only makes sense to eventually offer their services to Rafa clients.

Kim described how they make their products saying, “We manufacture all of that in small batches because we don’t use any parabens, sulfates, shelf-stabilizers, chemical binders no yucky stuff. We have a constant production schedule for skin care so you get the best and freshest ingredients.”

“I think at some point in time later down the road we’ll have a team of people that share the same passion that we do, assembled to provide services,” expressed the owner.

Why is having all-natural products of such importance to Rafa? Kim answered, “I think we’re all about balance. It’s important to us because it’s a cleaner product.”

Not to brag or anything, but I was lucky enough to be born with skin that is both very red and blotchy and extremely sensitive. I get contact dermatitis, breaking out in hives from everything from certain detergents, face washes, and even hot water.

After speaking with Kim and Chelsea, I wanted to give their all natural skin care products a try.

Chelsea agreed with Kim, saying, “All-natural, organic, that’s one of our huge draws. All of our clients love that and look for that and there’s not a lot of places, specifically in Lakeland, that offer that, but then I think what takes us to the next level is that you actually get to talk to the person who made your product.”

Choosing products at Rafa is consultative with plenty of explanation to customers from the knowledgeable staff. Chelsea, confident in the Rafa brand, remarked, “When you make the product, you know it inside and out.”

SHOP TILL YOU DROP We Costume and Production Designed a feature film called “Darcy.” Darcy’s parents own a motel where she works during summer break doing housekeeping. Darcy works hard and never gets a day off. As she is folding sheets and making beds, she dreams of this “perfect day off” She’d go into town, go out to lunch, see a movie, get ice cream and go to the boutique thrift store. She got some courage and decided to ask for a day off. It was shocking because her parents said yes!

Her mom said, “You and your friend Luke better enjoy ‘Darcy Day’ because it’s only happening once.”

When we’re not working together on a film we run our other businesses.

Rarely, but occasionally, Nando and I will go our separate ways… He to the farm in Lake Wales and I stay home, updating the websites, reading a script or working on new designs. Yesterday, as he was headed south, he exclaimed, “I’m so excited to come home and see how much you got done. You always get so much accomplished when I go away for the day.” Then he smiled and winked at me because he knows it is true. I grabbed another cup of coffee and settled in at my desk. It was early but once the darn roosters start crowing, there is no going back to sleep.

Around 10 am, “Double Trouble” came knocking on my office door. In the winters, we have a Frenchman and a Canadian that stay here on the farm with us. The two horsemen told me it was time for my daily riding lesson.

Then, they wanted to go out to lunch at Tempo 1930. How can you say no to that, right?

I walked, trotted and cantered my little pony. I only fell once but it was right in a patch of stinging nettles. While I was down, She bolted for her paddock.

They made me get back on her to trot a few more laps. You never want to end the lesson on a fall, for the horse or the rider. You know the saying, “Get back in the saddle.”

Having definitely worked up an appetite, we headed to Tempo. They really have a beautiful view of Central Park and the water fountain. It’s a chill spot. Following a fab lunch, we decided to take a lap around town. As we were walking, the Canadian said, “Hey Sal, do you want to pop into that Meals on Wheels Thrift Store that you like?” I said, “I really should be home working but, twist my arm and I’ll go.” We stopped at the bank and the Canadian pulled out some cash. Frenchie is always up for anything. You’d think, because he is French, he wouldn’t wear second hand clothing. Somehow he always manages to find the nicest clothes in the thrift store and picks out the best dresses for me. Brooks havenmagazines.com

perfect timing to watch the sunset over a pitcher on Lake Howard. It’s one of our favorite things to do after putting in “8 for 8”: a long hard day at the farm or office. With my frosty mug in hand, I figured shopping is actually something I do for a living, so technically today I worked. While we were experiencing the magical sunset, I turned to Canada and said, “Man, my birthday is not until April 12th but, I feel like today is my birthday.” He said, “That’s good Sal, we all work really hard and sometimes it’s nice just to take the day off no matter where you are in the world.” That is when it hit me, it wasn’t my birthday it was my “Sally Day” just like Darcy.

Canada told me, “Get whatever you want.” and he grabbed the tab in the first store. Then they both said, “What about the Goodwill? It’s so close.” I usually find Goodwill to be over my budget, but it looked like money was not an object today. Off to Goodwill we went. I grabbed a few great pairs of denim and seersucker shorts for Nando. We also scored some button down shirts that I am planning to up-cycle. Moneybags was looking for anything sports related. He wanted “old skool” basketball jerseys, vintage sport uniforms and Polk County athletic team apparel. I found him a great pair of unworn kicks but he claims to be a shoe snob so he passed.

Nando returned from working just around the same time that we got back to the farm. He wasn’t disappointed at all that I hadn’t gotten too much done.

He was happy, because I was happy. I had a good day full of “research and development” with my creative team. #shoptillyoudrop

Now, while all of this is going on the Frenchman is running around with his little Polo sweater tied around his neck saying “Shop Till You Drop!” As I type, I am just laughing out loud thinking about it. I said the phrase several years back and now every time we go shopping he says it throughout the entire spree.

Mr. Shop Till You Drop managed to find himself a “Make America Great Again” campaign shirt, a pair of American Flag swim trunks and a military veterans baseball cap. He threw in a pair of Walmart flip flops.

Fifteen dollars later, he had a plastic baggy full of all the elements needed for an outfit that he calls, “Well American!”

So, when they suggested ice cream, frozen yogurt and Polar Pops, I didn’t want to be rude and say no. Plus, they were driving and paying. We hit up 3 more thrift stores after that. Frenchie talked me into a pair of super classic leather ballet flats that I would never pick on my own. The Canadian insisted that I get this traditional western style shirt with pearl snaps. He was obsessed with it for himself but it was too small and didn’t fit into his “sports theme” today. I get this natural high when I am thrifting. We literally had the truck full of bags and treasures from every thrift shop in Winter Haven.

At the last shop as I was modeling a super chic, crisp white 90’s trench coat, the Frenchman said something that I have never heard any Frenchman utter before, “I can’t take anymore!”

(This was coming from the man with over indulgence in his blood.) He said, “I am literally gonna drop. Please, we must stop!” So, the Canadian and I surrendered.

We had ten bucks and they had one last trick up their new sleeves. It was 26

We’re based out of Winter Haven, (where Nando grew up), and Upstate NY, which is where we do the majority of our film work. Winter Haven has a magnetic pull so NY sees us less and less. MOJO Federal Swine & Spirits In the heart of downtown Lakeland off of Tennessee Avenue, sits a building that has had many lives over the years, now revived as MOJO Federal Swine & Spirits. The BBQ and Southern Food restaurant fits in perfectly with Lakeland’s classic charm and modern flair. Walking up the steps of the Federal Building through the white columns, MOJO Federal guests are greeted through the door by a spacious foyer with tall ceilings and a grand chandelier. The original exposed brick throughout the building, unique artwork on the walls, polished and stained floor, and original terrazzo in the center of the restaurant have made it quick to grow in popularity as a local hang out hub.

General Manager of MOJO Federal Swine & Spirits, Mark Burton discussed the space’s history, “The building is over 100 years old. From what I understand, it used to be a post office, it was the IRS, it’s been a bank and either a congressman or a senator had their office here at one point too.” He continued, “It is beautiful, it’s unique. It’s kind of nice to be inside the building, giving it some business again.”

Mark has been in the restaurant business for a long time, working for Carrabba’s Italian Grill for 23 years.

According to him, the owners of MOJO Holdings LLC, Todd Lineberry and Todd Ward started the process to bring the restaurant to Lakeland about 2 years ago as the 8th in their line of eatery concepts. In business for over 15 years, MOJO has locations in Jacksonville, Gainesville, Ocala, St. Augustine, and now Lakeland.

says the General Manager. “We actually call that meat candy. Once you try them, you’ll be back for them again.”

According to Burton, most of their restaurants are a combination of the MOJO name and a characteristic of the community the restaurant is in. “Gainesville was a big pig farm so they call it Hogtown, Brick City is downtown with all brick buildings,” explained Mark about where the name for MOJO Federal originated from.

A selection of 5 sauces rests on each table, ready to be mixed and matched with whatever smoky treat you decide on. The sauces: Mojo–an original BBQ, Sweet, Chipotle–a spicier sauce, Vinegar–a Carolina vinegar they put on their pulled pork when they chop it, and Mustard, are all made in-house.

Another popular sauce that is served with the chicken is a mayonnaisebased sauce called Alabama White.

Burnt Ends are the deckle muscle off of the brisket. They season it, cook it to perfection for 16-20 hours, and cube it. He says that the dish is so popular that on average they go through 10-15 25lb cases each week.

As for the atmosphere, “We just try to keep it alive and friendly,” remarked Burton, continuing, “The ambiance of the building has its own character. The arches, the brick, tons of windows, beautiful lighting, it kind of sets that atmosphere for us.”

I got to try some of the Burnt Ends during my visit to MOJO Federal. The outside has a smoked flavor encased in a crispy char with a soft pink center that just falls apart when cut into. The flavor was outstanding on its own, sweet and smoky, but paired with the chipotle and sweet sauces mixed together (a tip from my friend and

Felicia Gaffney I lost my car.”

This is Felicia Gaffney’s story. It is a story, or a lesson rather, in compassion, and how one act of kindness can change someone’s life. It is also about letting people lift you up when you need it and in turn lifting up others when you can.

Tears welled up in her eyes remembering the moment, “It’s just amazing how clear things become to you when you ask.”

Felicia, born in Auburndale, is a real estate agent for Coldwell Banker in Lakeland. She previously spent 10 years working a corporate medical device job where she traveled nationally and had a global team.

She didn’t say anything to her that night, but went home and called her good friend and mechanic to tell him her vision.

“Everything fell into place,” smiled Felicia. The mechanic had a car that he could have ready in just a few weeks.

During her foray into real estate, she spent 2 years teaching full-time math for college readiness at Tenoroc High School. She is married with two sons and a bonus son, ages 19, 16, and 14. She and her family love spending time together going to the mountains, hiking, taking trips to the beach, and fishing and kayaking at their new home on the lake.

After waiting a few weeks, Felicia got permission from the woman’s boss to sit down and talk with her. She told the woman what she wanted to do. In a powerful moment of perspective, Felicia described the woman’s reaction, “She was just extremely grateful and do you know what she said? ‘Now I can get a second job.’”

A beautiful, well put together woman with a soft voice and kind eyes, Felicia says, “I’ve overcome a lot of tremendous challenges personally as a child and an adult.

A lot of people don’t guess that when they meet me or talk to me or look at me.”

She continued, “I know that life can get extremely difficult. None of us get away from that, as much as we’d love to get up every day and love be perfect, kids be perfect, life be perfect, job be perfect, it seems like we’re almost fighting obstacles on a daily basis.”

“I think too, I can relate a little bit more having been a single mom as long as I had been and knowing how hard it can be,” she said.

She found out that even though the winter was cold this year, the woman was riding her bike to and from work. Felicia said, “She shouldn’t have to do that. She raised beautiful children, she’s a beautiful person, very sweet. I don’t think anyone at her age who’s worked as hard as she’s worked to get where she’s at should have to ride her bike to work in the rain or the cold in the morning.” And now she doesn’t.

Though she herself had a challenging life, spending 10 years single, raising her boys, she has always felt she had a specific purpose. “I always felt like my calling was to give people cars.”

With faith as a driving force behind her compassion, she knew that the gift of a car to someone could make all the difference in their life and help them to overcome difficulties. Whether it be a bad relationship, drugs, lack of opportunity, or any other challenge, having transportation could be the thing to change someone’s situation.

Looking forward with a giving heart, Felicia is already looking for the next opportunity to gift someone a car, saying that her goal starting out was to donate one car for every 5 homes she sold. Ultimately, she would like to start a not for profit, saying, “Hopefully, my thought is, that doing the not for profit will open the door so that if others do want to contribute, whether it’s a car, whether its funds, they can. I plan on it being 100%. I don’t want anything from this.”

Felicia got remarried a few years ago and she and her husband bought a house.

Seeking her husband’s blessing, she talked to him about her plan, explaining that it is a commitment that she made and wanted to keep and that they had the funds to do so. He agreed.

Frank Bazail, the managing broker at Coldwell in Lakeland expressed that as an outsider looking into the situation, anybody can take their money and decide to go on vacation, buy themselves a new car, or go on a shopping spree but, “She decided to put herself in somebody else’s shoes.”

Felicia didn’t want to choose someone. She didn’t want to profile people and make judgments on their lives. She needed help. The same week of speaking to her husband, Felicia and a girlfriend stopped at a little restaurant in Auburndale for dinner. She noticed a waitress that she’s seen around for years at different restaurants in town.

He reflected on the physical and emotional pain the woman was healing from and said, “For Felicia to do that, I think it empowered this woman to be able to feel better about herself.” He continued, “I think it’s a domino effect that now she’s seen that somebody cares, so God willing when she gets to a point in her life where she can do something like that, she will.”

Felicia mentioned to the waitress that she hadn’t seen her in a while. “She explained that she had been out of work for a year because she had suffered severe burns,” said Gaffney. According to Felicia, the woman, her mom, and her daughter had been cooking in the kitchen with a pressure cooker. It didn’t release any pressure and exploded on all three of them with the waitress taking the brunt of the explosion.

Felicia concurred with Frank, “I know in my life the small acts of kindness that people have done to help me or encourage me have probably been the biggest acts of kindness that I recall.”

Felicia’s finishing thought was simple but poignant, “You don’t have to do a grand gesture that affects the entire world to do something good. If everybody does a little bit, it’s that little bit that makes the big picture better.”

The waitress, a single mother with 4 children told Felicia that while she was healing from her burns, “She was praying to just die, she said the pain was so intense.”

Pay someone a compliment, pay for someone’s groceries, or just pay them attention and let them know someone cares. Just, pay it forward

While talking to her, Felicia asked, “How did you do it? How did you make it?”

The woman responded, “I didn’t. I lost my house, I was out of work for a year, and

You could say that Christine Boring’s family was built for Lakeland, or rather, that her father helped to build it. Though she was born and raised in the swan city, her father came from Brooksville. After graduating from Brooksville High School as the valedictorian, with no money and no opportunity to go to college, he joined the army at 19. The army sent him to work for the FBI. Following his work with the FBI, he was one of the very first soldiers to receive the GI Bill from the Army.

“It’s a lot of ups and downs. You work really hard and you might not come away with what you were hoping for, but that’s not what’s important. What’s important is that you’re getting life experience, that you’re making friends, that this can be a bonding time with your parents, that you learn how to cope with whatever life throws at you, and you enjoy the highs and when the lows come, you swallow it and move forward,” she said. “Every contestant is vying for the Miss America crown, it starts at the local level.”

“As fate would have, they were just getting ready to start construction on Florida Southern College and they were giving construction scholarships and so my dad went through school helping to build the Frank Lloyd Wright buildings on the GI bill.” He stayed in Lakeland, later working as a phosphate chemist.

The pageant circuit is incredibly important for the young women of Lakeland according to the director. Glitter and gowns and hair and makeup are the first things that stand out, but under the surface lie scholarship opportunities, community stewardship, and volunteerism. “The other piece beyond the scholarship is the community service. Every contestant has a platform, they do volunteer service, they speak about their volunteer service, and that’s part of their score.”

Christine’s roots have always pulled her back to the place she calls home. She has lived in Orlando, Texas, Maryland, and Ireland, but, according to Christine, “We always kept coming back to Lakeland because this is home.”

Christine is the owner of SoFlo Boutique Gifts & Art in Lakeland, a charming and eclectic shop. The store was started 5 years ago by local artist, Mary Witte. She brought in artists and someone to run the boutique. Christine said, “When it first started, there was a boutique and there were 3 or 4 anchor artists in here that actually rented space.” The shop also had a gallery space, at one point operating as a co-op.

Continued education is so important to the organization that the pageant is entirely volunteer-based with all money going to pageant expenses and scholarships.

“If you know any young ladies that you think should be competing for the title, send them our way and we’ll get them signed up,” said Christine. The teen division is ages 13-16 and Miss Lakeland is ages 17-25.

Christine acquired the store from Mary in 2016. “I really spent the first year building back up, getting more artists in here,” she explained. Christine’s sister Barbara Boulerice also works in the store with her. SoFlo has a truly unique selection of art, clothing, jewelry, and gifts. The store represents about 30 local artists with different mediums–sculpture, ceramics, watercolor, acrylics, oil, photography, and jewelry.

“I really think we’re going to get some awesome girls to represent Lakeland and I think the community as a whole is going to be really excited when they see the outcome,” remarked the director.

“We’re the shop that loves Lakeland. We have loads of swan stuff. When I can find swan clothes, I buy them.” Swan jewelry, purses, art, and clothing line the walls of the boutique.

The Miss Teen Lakeland and the Miss Lakeland Pageant will be held on March 18th at 2 pm at The Lake Mirror Theatre. You can purchase tickets for $15 at SoFlo Boutique or at the event.

Soflo also has a quaint yet functional room that Christine says is available for small meetings, girls nights out, art classes, or other small gatherings.

While tending to her duties as owner of the SoFlo Boutique, Christine has also taken on another important task as the director of the Miss Lakeland Pageant.

She saw the need for the pageant’s return after years without it. Seemingly the perfect person for the job, Christine herself is the mother of a former pageant competitor with her daughter, Perianne, who began competing at age 14 eventually winning Miss Teen Lakeland and Miss Lakeland.

Pondering the future, beyond making the Miss Lakeland Pageant a success, Christine reflected, “I want to build this business.” Adding to that thought, she said, “I really want to attract some of the top artists in this area [to display their work at SoFlo].”

According to Christine, the Miss Florida pageant is held right here in Lakeland, bringing in beautiful, talented young women from all over the state. It seemed only right that Lakeland would have representation in this huge event and the possible chance to eventually vie for the Miss America crown. “We need to be there, we need to be represented,” she expressed.

Faye Doppelheuer Babe’s Shoes & Apparel How does Babe decide what goes into her store? A combination of her own style and customer input according to the owner. “I’m all about looking at what’s trending out there. I educate myself all the time. Being a former teacher, I am looking at trends, I’m looking at what other people are doing in the industry.”

Faye also spends plenty of time at market looking at new vendors and finding looks and trends to bring back to Lakeland.

Like walking into your best-dressed girlfriend’s closet to pick out the perfect outfit, Babe’s Shoes & Apparel has been helping girls and women in Lakeland find their style. Babe’s, which is located in the notable Southgate Shopping Center where a scene of the 1990 film Edward Scissorhands was filmed, has been a staple in Lakeland for many years, celebrating its 30th anniversary in February of this year.

Georgia girl and owner of Babe’s, Faye Doppelheuer, was born and raised in Savannah. After attending school in the peach state, she eventually found her way to Florida.

Babe’s also puts on and participates in events and fashion shows to keep her patrons entertained. She does 1 in-store fashion show each season. On March 8th Babe’s is going to The Club at Eaglebrooke to do a fashion show for their residents and on Sunday, March 18th at 2pm, she will be doing her in-store seasonal show. In May, Babe’s will be doing another 2 shows–one for the Lady’s Night Out event for the Mulberry Chamber of Commerce on May 8th and another along with other stores for the Central Florida Speech and Hearing Fashion Show on May 10th. Guests are asked to make reservations in advance for all shows.

She started out as a teacher and moved on to freelance work and other jobs until she opened her own store in 1988. As a home economist, Faye dealt with things like clothing, textiles, and fashion merchandising–skills that would help her later in her store.

“Babe is my nickname. I am the youngest of 13 children, it was a yours, mine, and ours family and my mother only called me Babe,” explained Faye. She was racking her brain for the perfect moniker when it came to her, “I said, I have to call it Babe’s!”

When asked what this anniversary meant to her, Faye reflected on the 30 years she has spent building and maintaining Babe’s. “I’m a survivor, period,” She laughed with the glint of a proud tear in her eye. She continued, “I’ve always believed that in this business, you just keep moving forward, you never give up because the day you give up you’re closed.”

“When my mother heard that, of course, the gleam in her eye, the smile on her face, that was it. So, it became Babe’s,” she said warmly.

“I have, I guess, a doggone determination that I’m going to succeed and I have a tremendous passion for what I do. When you love what you do, it makes it all a whole lot more fun and a little bit easier,” she smiled.

As a lasting retail shop, Babe’s has endured industry changes and embraced the coming and going of fashion trends. “We’ve probably reinvented ourselves three or four times in thirty years,” said Faye, “I think that’s one of the keys to longevity is that you have to adapt and be ready for whatever is happening in the market, whatever is happening in the trends. We started as a shoe salon and then along with our shoes we did everything that went with that–handbags, jewelry, some limited apparel.”

There appears to be no end in sight for Babe’s with Faye’s heart in the business and a drive to continue serving her shoppers. She expressed, “Do I still love it, do my customers still like what I do, am I satisfying that ego, am I satisfying their needs? Then I see no reason to retire.”

According to Faye, when the age of the comfort shoe hit, Babe’s had to adapt, responding to customer demands of more clothing. Now, Babe’s selection is more clothing, jewelry, and accessory-focused, with shoes, as Faye describes, as more of an accessory than a signature item like they started out as.

At a time where you can tap your phone and have virtually any item shipped to you in a day’s time, Faye has still maintained a loyal customer base. They have expressed their want to spend dollars locally with her. They tell Babe what they want and she listens saying, “It’s all about our economy, that’s how we’re going to grow here. People buy on the internet because there’s an immediate need. They have to have it now, it’s that mentality. My store is a want store. I’m not a need store, never have been, I don’t sell milk and bread, but I sure sell a lot of wonderful things that my customers want.”

George Jenkins High School Baseball Team to Compete in the NHSI The George Jenkins Baseball team is making history for Polk County. Over spring break instead of hitting the beach or sleeping in, the boys on the GJHS Baseball team will be traveling to Cary, North Carolina to attend the most prestigious tournament in high school baseball–The National High School Invitational. From March 28th through the 31st, the team will be playing one game a day at the USA Baseball National Training Complex against 15 of the best schools in the nation.

Coach Chad Crosby, who’s been coaching the team for 5 years, remembers getting the call. In April of last year, the Director of USA Baseball called the coach to invite the team to the NHSI, remarking that they’ve exceeded expectations and are a team they want to watch. “We were told in April, and I was trying not to tell the kids right away because I wanted to finish off the season, we were still playing without looking ahead too much,”

Crosby continued, “that’s the culmination of high school baseball. It’s bigger than winning the state championship, you’re on a national stage.”

17-year-old Junior and pitcher on the team, Cooper Haskell said, “To get recognized by people like that and to be even considered in the top 16 teams in the country, let alone actually be invited to the tournament, it’s a crazy honor.”

High school Senior, 18-year-old Brady Allen who pitches and plays outfield for GJHS said, “In practice, we work very, very hard and it’s good to see our hard work go towards something. Everyone else is out there partying and having fun and stuff like that and we’re on the baseball field for 4 hours, every single day. It’s really relieving, I would say, having that feeling, being invited.”

Coach Crosby expects the best of his players both on and off the field and they appear to be working

around the clock to prepare for the tournament.

“This summer I was in good shape, but I wasn’t in the best shape I wanted to be in. So, I started working out at a place called Diesel Fitness in Tampa and I work out there 3 days a week. I’ve lost 10 to 12 pounds and put like 5 back on and I’m in the best shape ever, this is the best I’ve ever felt.

Countless hours spent on the field working to better ourselves,” expressed 18-year-old high school Senior and 3rd baseman for the team, Brandon Howlett.

Both Brandon Howlett and Brady Allen are both projected to be in the top 100 draft picks in the country with Brandon committed to Florida State University and Brady committed to the University of South Carolina.

Why has this group of players made such an accomplishment? According to the coach, “It helps to have outstanding leaders.” He continued, “It’s

really cool to see that they’re very humble, they go out and they still continue to work hard, but yet, they’re also in the batting cage, helping their teammates.” Coach Crosby also looks at the group as a baseball family, placing importance on the team culture, even donning hats that say “Family” on them.

As part of that family atmosphere, ensuring accountability, Coach Crosby often tells the players, “You’ve got 18 other players counting on you to do your job to the best of your ability whenever that opportunity its. They’re counting on you, they are your biggest fan when it’s your time to make a play or when you’re up to bat. They’re counting on you, that you’ve put in the work.”

The three players that I had the opportunity to interview, Cooper Haskell, Brandon Howlett and Brady Allen have all set huge goals for themselves

within their baseball careers. Where do they hope baseball will take them beyond high school?

“It’s been my dream to play in the big leagues ever since I started playing baseball. It’s what I’ve dedicated my whole life to, I’ve worked every single day at it. I hope I get drafted and if not, I’ll be going to South Carolina, so it’s a win-win kind of.

Hopefully, I end up in the major leagues,” expressed Brady.

“It’s been a goal of mine ever since I picked up a baseball,” said Brandon. He remembers watching teams playing on national television as a kid and wanting to get there one day, “I promised my mom if I continued with my baseball, I’d work until I reach that goal. I’ll do literally anything I can to reach that.” He agreed with what Brady said, “Even if I don’t get there, I’m still going to Florida State and you can’t go wrong with either one of those.”

Cooper explained he was using baseball to help with education costs in college. He wants to get into broadcasting and sees college baseball as a great way to make connections to further that career.

One of the team’s goals is to have one local business represent each of the players, sponsoring them to go to the NHSI. The cost for each player and coach to attend is $550 each. He plans to put a large sign over the grandstands that will read, “2018, Dream.

Reed began playing the piano 23 years ago. Today, he holds a doctorate in musical arts from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, is an assistant professor of music at Warner University, and has recorded three albums.

His accomplishments are all the more remarkable for the fact that Reed is partially deaf. There were complications during his birth and he was given potent medications that inflicted nerve damage. will definitely be back to try a different room. It’s not your typical night out, I highly encourage it!

The Lakeland Escape Room is locally owned and operated

by Ana and Andrew Gillespie. Ana writes the stories and the sequence of the clues and Andrew builds the rooms.

“The puzzles are a combined effort that we often come up with as a family on road trips or at the dinner table,” explained Ana. They offer 4 themed rooms with different levels of difficulty. A team of us from Haven went and tried the Cinema. It is not the most difficult, but it’s not the easiest, either. Ana recommends that beginners try the Speakeasy to start. That leaves the Asylum and Split being the 2 most difficult. Both of them offer a certain level of scariness, that the other two don’t. Each has its own background story with a specific goal you need to reach within 60 minutes. There are monitors in the rooms with a clock counting down, so you always know how much time is left. There is a seperate room in back where employees are always watching and listening to your room to help out if needed.

They also have a large conference room to rent. Ideal for companies to bring in employees for a meeting and then team building.

With that being said, we walked into a room, heard the background story and learned what we needed to accomplish.

And then they shut the door.

4 of us (first-timers) just stood and looked at each other.

The 2 that have done this before, frantically started touching and looking at everything.

The countdown begins.

The Escape rooms are part game, part team-building exercise. Sometimes, the answers require critical thinking skills. When there are 5 other people with you thinking 5 different ways, communication and teamwork are crucial.

Until you solve the clues to move on, nobody’s going anywhere. My advice is to bring at least one person with you that has done it before, so that you’re not completely lost.

As for our experience, we escaped with 5 seconds left on the clock. Full disclosure, you’re given the opportunity to ask for 3 clues, and we did. After that, if you want a clue they deduct time from your clock. I’ll admit, we had to ask for a 4th clue. As the clock counted down, the suspense grew and voices got louder. But we did it. It was so fun, I

Ana talks about what she wants for the future of the Escape Room, “To continue creating challenging and fun escapes for our friends here in Polk County. We are also very excited about our mobile escape rooms that we have been taking on the road to several schools, Universities and companies.

Some of the universities we have been to or are currently scheduled to go to are USF Sarasota/Manatee campus, FAU, Florida Southern and St. Pete College. We have also worked with schools where we bring our buildable mobile escape rooms and build them in a classroom. We are currently building an exciting new escape room concept and will be bringing it to Dennison Middle School for Pi Day. This escape will be custom designed for 6th, 7th and 8th grade students and be focused on math problems.

We are very excited about the STEM concept and incorporating it into our escape room.”

Some local residents are getting creative with the experience, too. So far, 8 people have secretly set up to propose in the middle of the game. That required getting in touch with Ana or Andrew ahead of time and planning it out. As you can imagine, the other person is totally not expecting it. Ana continued about a couple hiding a poem for their parents to find while doing the Speakeasy. “In the poem, the ‘grandparent-to-be’ will find out that their daughter and son-in-law are expecting their first child. We are so blessed to be around so much joy during times like these. Watching couples get engaged or families share such special moments like announcing their pregnancies, make us all smile while we are working in the back. It certainly doesn’t feel like work.”
