Letter From the Editor

It’s finally here, our biggest (and most fun!) issue of the year, all thanks to YOU! From June 1 through July 27, we asked readers to vote for their favorite businesses, and now it’s time to celebrate the winners. From restaurants to doctors to local favorites of every kind, we’ve tallied the votes and can’t wait to share them with you.
This year’s design features beautiful Liberty of London prints. If you’ve followed us before, you know we love weaving art into our Best Of issue. Liberty of London, founded by Arthur Lasenby Liberty in 1875, became especially loved during the Art Nouveau era, so it felt like the perfect choice for a touch of timeless style.
Don’t miss our Top Ten lists and swing by GoPolkGo.com for all the happenings this month. Hope to see you out and about!

LOCAL NEWS
SCHOLARSHIPS
The Polk Education Foundation has announced a monumental achievement in its commitment to student success: for the first time since 1988, the Foundation has awarded more than $1 million in scholarships to deserving Polk County Public Schools seniors graduating in 2025. This significant milestone reflects the unwavering support of the community, donors, and the Foundation’s efforts to support and uplift the leaders of tomorrow. The scholarships, awarded to hundreds of talented and hardworking students will help alleviate the financial burden of college tuition and other educational expenses. Recipients represent a diverse range of academic achievements, career aspirations, and personal circumstances, all united by their ambition to pursue higher education.
CENTRAL PARK
Winter Haven’s Central Park is undergoing a transformation that will ensure it remains a lush and welcoming park for years to come. They’ve removed the old sod and replaced it with Provista sod, a highquality, shade-tolerant turf that thrives under tree canopies and requires less frequent mowing. With guidance from a certified arborist, they carefully assessed the health of each tree. Eight trees are scheduled for removal because they are either dead or no longer healthy. For every tree removed in the downtown area, the City will plant two in its place, as outlined in their Urban Forestry Plan. That means 16 new trees will be planted in and around Central Park. These new trees will be selected from the City’s preferred species list using the “Right Tree, Right Place” principle. Replanting will begin in the coming months and continue in phases.
PCPS REZONING
Polk County Public Schools will balance enrollment in high schools and maximize available resources to ensure all students have access to a highquality education regardless of where they live, by rezoning. Comprehensive rezoning takes a complete look at all school boundaries to determine how to adjust for the most efficient use of available resources and balance enrollment. The School Board could make a final decision and approve new high school boundaries by October, depending on community feedback received and the direction given by board members. The goal is to complete the comprehensive rezoning of high schools and implement new boundaries by the start of the 2026-27 school year.
HONORING OUR HEROES
This event, on Sept. 11, recognizes the dedication and sacrifice of our military, law enforcement, firefighters, and EMS who stand in the gap to keep America safe. The evening will conclude with a candlelight ceremony, and public safety agencies will have equipment on display before the start of the program. This event is coordinated by the Winter Haven Public Safety Department in partnership with the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, Polk Fire Rescue, and area Police and Fire Departments across Polk County. Special thanks to the Polk County Veterans Council for their support and participation. Everyone is welcome to walk in honor of those who serve and protect. September 11 at South Central Park in Winter Haven. Registration begins at 4:30 p.m., the Freedom Walk begins at 5:30 p.m., and the ceremony begins at 6 p.m.
BEST HIGH SCHOOLS
Polk State College’s collegiate high schools occupied the top two spots throughout the district. Polk State Lakeland Collegiate High School and Polk State Chain of Lakes Collegiate High School finished first and second, respectively for the past academic year among Polk County Public Schools, based on the Florida School Accountability Reports. Chain of Lakes was scored for nine categories and achieved 87% of its points possible –10 percentage points higher than the next highest school in the Polk County Public Schools district. These schools allow students to complete requirements for their high school diploma while completing college credits at no cost to them. Most students graduate from high school with their college degrees.
SPECIAL NEEDS WAREHOUSE
Polk County Commissioners, County and Emergency Management officials gathered for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the completion of the new Special Needs Shelter Warehouse. The 80,000-square-foot warehouse is located at 1896 Jim Keene Blvd. in Winter Haven, adjacent to the county’s Emergency Operations Center. It will serve as the central storage and distribution site for equipment and supplies used in special needs shelters throughout Polk. Equipment such as cots and bedding, hygiene kits, oxygen carts and tubing, cleaning supplies, and personal care items will be stored on-site and deployed when shelters are activated during hurricanes or other emergencies. The warehouse also includes staging areas to improve logistics and speed up the delivery of resources to shelter sites.
ARTS HALL OF FAME
The Polk Arts & Culture Hall of Fame Gala and Awards Ceremony is an annual event that celebrates and highlights the arts and cultural contributions of Polk County citizens and organizations. The evening features live music, an art exhibit, a catered dinner, and an awards ceremony that is highlighted by the induction of the new class into the Polk Arts & Culture Hall of Fame. IT’S WRITTEN IN THE STARS
(March 21 – April 19)
Best at Starting Something (and Making It Look Easy)
September has you fired up and ready to get it done. Your to-do list is shaking in its boots. Just remember: not every mountain needs to be sprinted up. Pace yourself, you’re building an empire, not a bonfire.
(April 20 – May 20)
Best at Living the Luxe Life on a Tuesday
You’re craving calm, carbs, and cuddles, and honestly? You deserve all three. This month, beauty and balance find you in unexpected ways. Light a candle, say no to chaos, and let cozy be your superpower.
GEMINI
(May 21 – June 20)
Best Conversationalist at Literally Any Party
Your inbox is popping, your calendar’s packed, and your brain? Electric. September’s giving you main character monologue energy, use your words wisely. Speak your truth, just don’t talk yourself into (or out of) something wild … unless it’s fun.
(June 21 – July 22)
Best Shoulder to Cry On (And Bake You Cookies After)
Feelings, finances, and family vibes all want your attention, but don’t forget you in the mix. Set boundaries like you set your Wi-Fi: strong, secure, and non-negotiable. Soft doesn’t mean a doormat.
(July 23 – August 22)
Best Entrance, Exit, and Everything in Between
You’ve got that post-summer glow, and everyone’s noticing. September brings big energy for goals, glam, and maybe a little gossip (keep it cute). Your spotlight’s still on, use it to warm others, not burn bridges.
VIRGO
(August 23 – September 22)
Best at Fixing Things Without Needing Credit
Your season is here, darling, and the universe has entered maximum Virgo. Plans, productivity, and perfectionism may be peaking, but don’t forget to celebrate how far you’ve come. You’re not just fixing everything, you’re flourishing.
(September 23 – October 22)
Best Dressed and Most Likely to Mediate Your Family Drama
September whispers sweet nothings into your ear, and you’re feeling it: romance, renewal, and maybe a new aesthetic. Whether it’s a fling or a full-blown reinvention, lean into the pretty chaos. Symmetry is overrated, follow the spark.
(October 23 – November 21)
Best at Knowing the Secret Before You Say It
You’re in your introspective era. September stirs deep thoughts and deeper connections. Secrets may surface, keep your intuition sharp, and your vibe even sharper. Mysterious? Always. But also powerful beyond measure.
(December 22 – January 19)
Best CEO Energy Without Breaking a Sweat You’re building your legacy. September’s all about leveling up, career moves, financial glow-ups, and setting boundaries like a boss. But don’t forget: even powerhouses need power naps.
(January 20 – February 18)
Best at Being the Coolest Weirdo in the Room New perspectives, new people, and maybe a plot twist or two. This month wants you to break out of the box you built for yourself. Be weird, be wild, be wonderful, you were never meant to blend in.
(November 22 – December 21)
Best at Booking a One-Way Flight Just for Fun
Your wanderlust is waking up, but so is your inner visionary. This month, your bold ideas actually land. Pitch that project, book that trip, kiss that cutie, whatever it is, it’s time to leap (with style).
