In general we use either a light or dark fabric for furnishings with pillows adding the color and pattern. More and more front entrances in South Florida incorporate water features and interesting steps or stepping stones are very popular. We are using storm and disease tolerant hedges and plantings to be eco friendly and reduce maintenance.

In this Hamptons bedroom and dressing area, I used a bold tropical patterned Pierre Frey wallpaper in sepia tones to set off saturated pops of red, pink, magenta, and yellow. The walls become a large scale texture which plays nicely with the more subtle consistency of sisal carpet, boucle fabric, and wood flooring. The result is a room that’s very relaxing, fresh, and breezy despite daring elements.”

“Lately I love layering bold ceramics as accent pieces. It’s a fresh departure from curated stacks of books and highlights a unique way for clients to express their personality. I transformed an entryway bookcase in a New York City apartment into a chic cabinet of curiosities by arranging ceramic sculptures and vases which play off each other in color, shape and texture. The result was a first impression of the home that’s both elegant and whimsical.”

Florida has long been a destination for wealthy residents of New York, but typically as a place for summer homes or winter retreats. New York City residents would spend seasons in Florida, typically in the South, as a way to soak up some sun and spend some time at the beach. But during the pandemic, something changed.

While the moving of New York City residents to Florida didn’t result in a mass exodus of the city, as more New York residents moved to different boroughs than left the city throughout the pandemic according to Business Insider, a significant amount did in fact head South to Florida, with some bringing their businesses with them. According to the same report by Business Insider, 19,000 Manhattanites moved to Florida between March 2020, and February 2021. Some of these Manhattanites include Wall Street’s best and brightest. Charles Schwab, who is the founder of Charles Schwab, an asset management and brokerage firm moved to Palm beach. Elliot Management, a hedge fund, relocated its headquarters to West Palm Beach. Blackstone, the leading private equity giant, is planning to open an office in Miami. The appeal of Florida for wealthy New Yorkers is obvious. For starters, there is a pretty substantial difference in weather. New York winters can be a slog, and Florida winters don’t exist. As well, the cost of living in New York City is extreme. In most parts of Florida, your dollar takes you much further. Florida also has no state and city income tax, no estate tax, and no capital gains tax, according to Fox Business.

Real estate is significantly cheaper in South Florida per square foot, even in places like Palm Beach. According to a report by Rocket Mortgage, the average price per square foot in Manhattan is a whopping $1,400, making it the most expensive city per square foot in the nation. While this has always been the case, the pandemic has spurred New York residents to re-assess their living environments, because workfrom-home enables them to work in any location. Another factor spurring residents of New York to head to Florida, particularly wealthy ones, is an imminent increase of taxes for the wealthiest residents of the city, as well as big corporations, according to CNBC. Leaders in Florida see the opportunity of disgruntled wealthy New Yorkers who don’t want to deal with a bump in taxes. Miami Mayor Francis Suarez has gained a national reputation for trying to court business from high-tax areas like California and New York. Many New Yorkers had the time and opportunity to reassess where it is they want to spend their time. For some, Florida became the answer. Cities like Miami and Palm Beach experienced an influx of new residents, with many of them being Manhattanites looking to set up in cities with better weather, lower taxes, and a more affordable cost of living. While this doesn’t mean by any means that New York City is on the decline, it could mean that cities like Miami and Palm Beach are poised for growth as residents flood in.
