This story began quietly in an abandoned rural lot. A young man had stopped briefly that afternoon and almost didn’t see him, a dog laid there, blending into the ground — still, weak, and covered in blood. The dirt beneath him was beaten down, as if he had been lying there for hours.
He gave him water. He said a prayer: God, if he’s still here when I come back, I’ll take him home.
At 5:00 p.m., when he returned, the dog had not moved.
After being cleaned up, the truth was discovered. The poor dog had been shot twice in the head and left to die. X-rays revealed a bullet lodged in his sinus cavity and fragments throughout his skull. Removing them could cost him his life. His eyes were blood red from internal bleeding.
There was no owner. No safety net.
So we said yes.
Yes to emergency care.
Yes to antibiotics and diagnostics.
Yes to foster placement.
Yes to hope.
