Linked
Housing For All | Fall 2023 | Jin Young Song Studio In collaboration with: Sandra Zarub
This project strives to provide a space that encourages social interaction at various levels . To cultivate these connections among residents , our design incorporates large areas of social spaces that are all interconnected around a vertical courtyard.
The ground floor is dedicated to public amenities and includes programs such as lounges, classrooms, laundry, and more. The corners of our building are L-shaped and are open, double height, social spaces with glass facades. These hubs are then connected through the corridors that contain interior and exterior balconies that also provide small pockets of social interaction.
To further the connectivity of the project, social stairs are located in the hubs , and also connect the public balconies around the courtyard. This system not only connects the social spaces to each other, but to the units and residents as well. With these mea sures, the courtyard is activated and residents have numerous modes of interaction that strengthen the community.

The Cave
Community Center | Spring 2023 | Brad Wales
In collaboration with: Natalie Freund
Our architectural project aims to establish rooftop terraces as growing spaces for the community , enabling the sale of locally produced food at a weekly farmers market located on the ground floor
To achieve this, we have designed an enclosed ground floor area with a captivating glass facade , enticing people to explore the market inside where community-grown produce is available for purchase.
To optimize efficiency , we employed a stepped massing approach that repeats throughout the project. Our structural grid follows a 30-foot oncenter configuration, with a sub-planning module of 15 feet. This layout ensures a harmonious repetition of elements while supporting the overall functionality of the building.
For the structural integrity of the project, we utilized 4-way piers with cast-in-place (CIP) walls, serving as lateral bracing elements. To enhance insulation and protection, the exterior of the building is enveloped with insulation and cladding .

RAINWATER COLLECTION

Cistern located on the fourth floor holds rainwater. Pipes distribute water throughout the building and to the growing spaces on the upper levels.

MARKET SPACE

GROWING SPACES

Rooftop gardens use the south-facing form of the building and the rainwater distribution system to grow crops that can be sold in the market space on the ground floor.

The open lobby space on the ground floor leaves room for venders to set up tables and sell produce from the rooftop gardens.

GENERATOR

Generator room located on the main floor connects to the solar panels on the roof to provide power in emergency situations an power outages.

VENTILATION WINDOWS 24” ventilation windows 6’ up provide ventilation to spaces that don’t require larger windows.
