II Foundation’s Monte Carlo Gala for the Global Ocean on September 26 and witnessed the extreme generosity that raised $25 million for environmental preservation projects. I read all the booklets in my gala packet and was impressed by H.S.H. Prince Albert II’s dedicated efforts to this critical mission. His lifelong passion for the cause touched me and I wrote my recap of the event the moment I returned to my hotel room from the gala—at 6 a.m.! A huge thanks to the super-efficient assistance from the Palace’s press office who provided additional information and photos. We are excited to report on our local queen of philanthropy, Dede Wilsey, whose generous donations and tireless fundraising efforts are well-known in the Bay Area. Without her, we wouldn’t be enjoying the opera, the symphony, the ballet, and the museums in San Francisco. Speaking of fundraising, we thank you for your aid of the Rain Forest Trust and UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital. We encourage you to attend the San Francisco Opera Guild’s Evening on the Stage. It takes place on November 28 and helps fund the Opera’s education and community outreach programs. I attended the Monaco Yacht Show and got up close and personal with Peter Lürssen. His family’s 140-year-old shipbuilding dynasty has crafted the largest yachts in the world and earned him the title of ‘King of the Superyacht.’ Plus, Haute Yachts features interesting new creations—and our exclusive Dior fashion spread is meant to inspire wanderlust. HOTEL NIA IS AN OASIS IN THE MIDDLE OF SILICON VALLEY Step into the high-ceilinged lobby at the Hotel Nia, and an instant calm fills the air. In true Galaxy fashion, sofas, sun pads, a petite sundeck, a superyacht spa pool, and LCD glass windows make up for not having an upper deck. But it is Galaxy’s combined fuel efficiency and speed that will take yacht owners and designers far into the future. ERA 80 “Brokers advised me to ignore convention and to stop trying to please naval architects by presenting conservative concepts. I was advised to show something progressive and innovative,” said designer Ricky Smith. And that is exactly what we get from his 80m über-aerodynamic explorer superyacht, ERA 80. Designed to reduce drag, and in collaboration with Stuart Friezer Marine Naval Architects, ERA 80 has a covered bow. Immediately recognizable by its smooth, non-faceted superstructure, the ERA 80 concept is about taking advantage of both space and privacy. The Smith project features a 13m bean that allows for a Bell 427 or Eurocopter EC145, an owner’s suite on the upper deck, a VIP and four-guest suite, accommodates 20 and a total crew of 24.

Project EGO: Giamboi Designs

PROJECT EGO With three decks, 12.8m wide, and 36m in length, Project EGO is the multihull catamaran superyacht brainchild of Mauro Giamboi of Giamboi Designs. Recall that it was Giamboi who introduced Quaranta to the world in 2013. EGO is lightweight and fuelefficient with two bows able to cut through waves with ease. EGO has a full beam salon and two main cabins on the main deck. Two more guest cabins are located in the portside hull. The starboard hull hosts six crew members comfortably.

With a vibrant, deep coppery hue that draws you in and a smoky berry and flinty nose, this extrabrut has a well-balanced length with concentration and depth on the palate. While fascinating alone, it’s spectacular with slow-roasted lobster mushroom risotto. Hostess gift recommendation: Bouzy! Champagne from Pierre Paillard, located in the Grand Cru village of Bouzy, is notable for its power and structure. Paillard blends a bit of Chardonnay which brings a racy lift to the richness of the Pinot Noir. On her wishlist: A set of Dorothy Thorpe mid-century cocktail stems. A glassware designer not manufacturer, Thorpe created timeless collectibles whose vessels make juice a joy to drink from. All of this earthy campfire-inspired cookery adds to Angler’s charm—it goes with the cabin and wildlife decor. Taxidermy, exposed bricks, industrial beams, mounted fish, and polished wood feature throughout the space. With dried herbs hanging from the rafters, baskets overflowing with citrus, and urns filled with wildflowers, the open kitchen is a focal point in the main dining room. The second smaller dining room has a clublike atmosphere. A growling black bear greets diners and game heads, including a stag with large antlers that Skenes hunted, fill the walls. Despite the masculine vibe, Angler somehow works. It’s welcoming and cozy with delicious, indulgent food, stellar wine—Bright’s list includes a wide selection of Burgundy and benchmark producers from Northern California—and craft cocktails. If you come for just one item, make it the caviar, which is served in an old-fashioned candy bowl and paired with plantain waffles and house-made butter. It’s wildly decadent, but insanely good. Another restaurant that has been generating a lot of attention is Prairie in the Mission District. Prairie is the first eatery from Anthony Strong, who spent 11 years as executive chef of

For example, instead of wrapping dried fruit, like figs or dates, with prosciutto, as is common in Italian restaurants, Strong wraps mochi—Japanese rice cakes—with guanciale then drizzles it with aged balsamic vinegar. The mochi takes on a surprisingly mozzarella-like texture, and the resulting appetizer is thought-provoking and interesting. The housemade buttered tagliatelle is toothsome and addictive especially once tossed with the juicy chicken sugo. Strong imported a charcoal grill from Spain and uses this to char red peppers, flame grill anchovy-rubbed lamb chops, and sear octopus. The dinner was held in a crystal tent that had breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea on one side and the magnificent Opera Garnier on the other side. “I HAVE BEEN TOLD BY FRIENDS THAT PEOPLE THINK THAT I’M INTIMIDATING AND I THOUGHT IT WAS THE FUNNIEST thing I’ve ever heard,” Dede Wilsey says. She’s sitting in an armchair in her Napa Valley home—the place where she is most happy—her 10-year old Maltese at her feet. Wilsey and I are 30 minutes into an hour-long conversation, and I couldn’t agree with her more. Although I was incredibly intimidated by the thought of interviewing San Francisco’s reigning queen of philanthropy, any fears melted away within seconds of meeting her. A naturally gracious hostess, Wilsey has an uncanny ability to make anyone feel comfortable. This isn’t the first reporter she’s entertained, and it’s probably not the last—but she is so candid I feel as if I’m chatting with one of my oldest girlfriends. There is an energetic, youthfulness to Wilsey and when she speaks, her tone is both excited and astute. Everything she says feels like it could be a secret—and it’s utterly captivating. Another aspect of her charm? The fact that in the Bay Area no female is as graceful and giving as Wilsey. Contributing to the causes she believes in is her job and one that she takes very seriously. Although the exact amount she has donated over the years is not known, Wilsey helped bring in more than $200 million to rebuild the de Young Museum. She raised $3.2 million for the Immaculate Conception Academy, and she led fundraising that bankrolled $16.6 million for Grace Cathedral. She’s given generously to the the UCSF medical facilities, San Francisco Ballet and San Francisco Opera. In 2016 she contributed to more than 380 different charities. To Wilsey, this is all in a day’s work and not something she brags about. Instead, she moves the discussion to focus on her family.

Wilsey is referring to her elder son, Trevor Traina, who moved to Vienna earlier this year to become the United States Ambassador. Traina was nominated by President Trump and approved by the Senate, before he moved his wife, Alex-

Traina is living in the exact house that Wilsey’s father resided in and much remains the same—including the exterior, gardens, and grand staircase. “Inside where the staircase is—I looked over there and I sort of expected my parents to come down the stairs. Then I have to pinch myself and think no, it’s somebody else. It is a peculiar feeling to think it’s not your father, it’s your son.”

Times have changed since Buchanan was the ambassador and this is apparent in the security team that accompanies Traina and his family everywhere in Austria. He has two guards with him at all times. A car with machine gun-armed men follows his armored vehicle. “The difference is that the world is so much more complicated. My father didn’t have that kind of security. The car looks like something out of a movie,” Wilsey explains. “My ten-year-old grandson thinks it’s so cool. Trevor said to me, ‘Mom, you have to sit here. I have to sit here,

and we can’t change places. It’s not random. I must sit here behind this guard.’ And I said, ‘Fine. I don’t care. Great.’” Traina’s security detail isn’t for every ambassador, only the Israeli Ambassador and the American Ambassador require the extra protection because of ISIS. “That’s scary. I mean you don’t want them to blow your child up,” Wilsey says seriously. But that doesn’t mean Wilsey, or any of her family, will hide. “It’s important for my children and my grandchildren to see what’s become of the world and work to make it better. Make peace for everybody. And make this a better place and respect the climate and respect people from all countries and understand that unless they work hard to make it better, we’re in real trouble,” she says sounding more like a politician than a grandmother. After it was damaged by the 1989 earthquake, Wilsey single-handedly raised the necessary funds to build a new museum. “What were we going to do with the art if we didn’t [rebuild it]? Put it in the basement of the Legion? We needed a museum, and it had been there, it was just so damaged by the earthquake that it couldn’t stay open anymore. There were two choices: Be without one museum or rebuild it. That art needed a home, so I think it was pretty simple, we just had to rebuild it.” While it was 10 years of hard work, Wilsey

Consider the cause and the people behind it. “There are so many good causes that you want to be sure you’re working for a good one and not something that’s somebody’s personal aggrandizement. It needs to be run like a business.” Support diversity. “You want to be sure it’s big and diverse. And in this case diverse, not just in the obvious ways but, for me, age is important because young people are the future. So it’s important to have them well-represented.” Familiarize yourself with the institution. “To get on the board, they would have to be involved with the art form first. They would have to volunteer or be involved with the auxiliaries or something to be familiar with the art form and to come to the notice of people on the board who might say, ‘oh that person has a lot of knowledge in this area.’” Know the game you’re in. “Always understand the game you’re in, and then you can play it. But if you don’t understand what you’re doing, don’t even try.” Don’t do business with anyone in a hurry. “Never do business with a man running to catch a train. Now, of course, today it would be an airplane. But I think that’s very good advice. once a logging community and many of the places that remain today are steeped in history. One such place is The Harbor House Inn an upscale bed and breakfast 20 minutes south of Mendocino in a town called Elk. The Inn underwent eight years of restoration before it opened, with nine guest rooms, earlier this year. Initially built in 1916, Harbor House is a stunning redwood structure. The Goodyear Redwood Company commissioned architect Louis Christian Mullgardt to craft a home that showcased the beauty of the lumber. The house served as the offices and embarking point for lumber into the Pacific Ocean until 1966 when the mill was torn down. The property underwent a series of ownership changes. In 2005, its current owners, Edmund Jin and Eva Lu, purchased the premises. The duo launched Harbor House as a lifestyle brand in 2009 selling linens inspired by the area and finally in May of this year, reopened the historic building as a luxe lodging house. One of the things that make Harbor House unique is its innkeepers. Chef Matt Kammerer is in charge of all things culinary while his girlfriend, Amanda Nemec, is general manager of the property. The stylish young couple greets guests—welcoming them into the inn as if it were their actual home. With chocolate leather couches, vintage artwork, and antique furniture, the lobby is masculine, warm, and inviting. Outfitted in Harbor House linens, the rooms are chic

Whether you spend one night or many at the Harbor House, it’s hard not to leave feeling relaxed and invigorated. This year’s show attracted 580 leading companies in the yachting industry, plus countless buyers, sellers, yacht owners, brokers, builders, designers, charterers, service providers, and exhibitors from around the world. Over 120

extraordinary superyachts were on display—including around 40 new launches making their world debuts. It’s hard to imagine how the show can improve year after year, but this

OHD: Why shift your focus to smaller yachts in the 50 to 65-meter range? PL: While we are very grateful for the success of our large builds, it is essential not to forget that our core business is between 50 to 80 meters. He’s also a superb host who happens to throw fabulous parties. Recently, his two talents came together at the launch of his second book, Be Bold. The sensational event took place at luxe showroom Coup D’Etat and had a theme that mimicked the title of the book. Handsome men in blue bowties and suspenders poured magnums of Billecart-Salmon rosé. MUSLIM FASHION EXHIBIT OPENS AT DE YOUNG WITH GORGEOUS RUNWAY SHOW Fashion lovers and patrons of the arts came together for the opening of an exciting new exhibit at the de Young Museum. Contemporary Muslim Fashions is a stunning collection of dresses and art related to the modern Muslim women. The exhibition is open to the public now through January 9. Jill D’Alessandro, the curator in charge of costume and textile arts, and Laura L. Camerlengo, associate curator of costume and textiles, organized the exhibit which features 53 international designers. The duo tapped Stephan Rabimov, the founder of Depesha and a local style influencer, to produce a runway show of 12 looks, specifically for the opening. After the captivating presentation, the well-dressed group headed downstairs to wander the galleries.

DREAMFORCE’S 9TH ANNUAL CONCERT RAISES $10 MILLION On Wednesday, September 26 the streets surrounding the Civic Center were closed to traffic thanks to Marc Benioff and Salesforce. CELEBRITY CRUISES HOSTS BOAT PARTY IN HONOR OF REAF Solstice, a massive Celebrity Cruises ship, was the location of a rollicking party that supported the Richmond-Ermet Aid Foundation (REAF). Soirée on the Bay was a lively event where two iconic SF institutions were honored: the Bay Times and publisher, Dr. Berry Sullivan, and the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus director, Timothy Seelig. On October 21, San Francisco Opera presented Placido Domingo in concert with soprano Ana Maria Martinez, tenor Arturo Chacon-Cruz and the San Francisco Opera Orchestra conducted by Spanish conductor Jordi Bernàcer. The soldout performance featured scenes from Verdi’s La Traviata and Simon Boccanegra, along with arias and duets from Spanish zarzuelas. Domingo’s partnership with San Francisco Opera dates back to 1969 when he made his debut as Rodolfo in La Bohème. This concert marked his first return to San Francisco since 2010. Although he has aged, his voice is still powerful, and his aria as the father in La Traviata was
