What spring means? Potholes, unpredictable weather and time change the three most complained about subjects this season that all seem to throw our energies into one unsettling loop. Seasons mean transition, and as we know change can be hard, and sometimes it’s favorable, sometimes it’s not, but we all know it is imminent. So how do we navigate this shift, well it’s an absolute must in the fashion trade. Much like potholes, weather and time we must steer ourselves in a new direction to keep relevant.

This spring we get “Blown away” by the fashion, and in this editorial our model-dancer, Jenna Ode brings the precision of ballet with the elegance of modeling creating a serious blast of style. Photographer Asia Hamilton captures a mood and strength that elevates us to a higher level.

Afrofuturism (I love that word) is the call for beauty this season; Beauty is a beast, an untamable, unrelenting force of nature that no-one can deny. For Spring 2018 calling to life, the mysticism and grandeur of Africa’s regal, athletic – that combination of sleek sophistication and proud Afrocen-

tricity bringing the power and majesty of “Black Panther” to our pages is a fete we couldn’t ignore. As one of the top-grossing films of its genre we were enamored of the hair and makeup, so I called upon the exceptional talents of artists Talya Ashford, and Maya Mitchell who created the most incredible hair and makeup alongside our beautiful model Shieda Moore that made the crew scream “Wakanda Forever.”

Trending is a leading phrase in menswear for spring and trend we did! Everything from Hawaiian prints to Easter egg shades in suits, plush glittery fabrics lifted from the ladies. Short-shorts and outerwear - worn inside. Skirts instead of pants, jumpers in all textures and it’s all coming to a store near you so beware!

Haute’s Entertainment Editor Olivia Ewing shares her fascinating conversation with two of Detroit’s most talented and prized couples Stephanie and Tyrone Dickey and their twenty-seven-year journey of love and creativity, now with a new creative space and coffee bar, comic books and action figures we can’t wait for our readers to experience this fantastic couple and the exceptional work they are doing.

Franklin Rowe’s fashion reflects classic 1940s glamour with a touch of modern chic. His clothes accentuate femininity. Rowe has always had a fascination with shapely dresses with sleeves. A New York fashion designer, Rowe keeps it real with unique new looks. “I try to apply innovation to my creations. My designs are stylish and practical garments that people can wear throughout their everyday lives, not just for holidays or red-carpet appearances,” said Rowe.

Master Hair Designer, Artistic Director, Salon owner, and Detroit native, Maya Mitchell, continues to blaze a trail of innovation in the hair industry by showcasing her creativity with her clients and styling peers. An expert in the application of hair coloring, cutting, styling and weaves, Maya effortlessly captures the personality and style of her clients, while accentuating individual beauty. Maya’s avant-garde approach to hair application and her ability to expertly blend fashion and makeup with the art of hair when showcasing her creativity. This ability certifies her as a hair master extraordinaire at the forefront of hairstyling and healthy hair-care management.

A 20-year veteran fashion designer, Rowe attended LaGuardia High School of Music and Art and was awarded a full scholarship to New York’s Traphagen School of Design. Rowe’s first break was a position as a wardrobe stylist for the “One Life to Live” soap opera series. This opportunity was the beginning of his celebrity designer affiliations with Taye Diggs, Dionne Warwick, Grace Jones, Queen Latifah and Mary J. Blige. His couture designs have appeared on the runway of the Ebony Fashion Fair and the cover of Cosmopolitan magazine. His designs are a mixture of elegant fabrics and texture like leathers, silks, natural fibers and jersey knits. Poised for a new era in conceptual apparel design in which form and fashion are justified. It pleases Rowe to know that any stylish woman can finesse her way along the front row. However, only style-conscious women have what it takes to keep it real in style. Rowe’s creations are in boutiques in New York City and Atlanta.

Working with elite educators such as the Bronner Brothers franchise, Design Essentials, America’s Beauty Show, Schwarzkoph Igor’s Color System and Paul Mitchell. She is an expert in all forms of Hair Care, Weaving, Coloring, and Precision Cutting. Maya launched POSH Deux - an annual showcase of creativity, elegance, and luxury unified for the love of art in fashion, hair, and makeup.

Maya continues to expand her entrepreneurial horizons with LaRee Salon a full-service salon & spa in Detroit, Michigan.

STEVE RAGLAND

Joe Alisa, a native of Detroit, is recognized universally as one of today’s finest photographers.

He is best known for his evocative portrait, editorial, and fashion photography in Detroit. Joe specializes in human expression and architecture with a style consisting of colorful and energetic imagery. Running a client-friendly, service-oriented business, he believes that great creativity often is the result of team effort and values working closely with his clients. Based in Michigan, Joe is ready to capture outstanding images for you.

Native New Yorker Steve Ragland has refined the art of romancing the soul of his subjects through his lens. Ironically, Steve’s love of photography was kindled through the career equivalent of a blind date: His friend, an aspiring designer, asked him to help her create a portfolio because she needed somebody to take pic-tures. When the photos exceeded her wildest expectations she encouraged him to develop his innate talent and take out the camera for himself. After attending New York’s School of Visual Arts, Steve became a much sought after fashion and beauty photographer in cities from Paris and London to Toronto to Taipei. Now working in Detroit and Los Angeles, he continues to produce one-of-a-kind images that are elegant, sensual and timeless.

LESLIE ANN PILLING Leslie Ann Pilling designs and produces her luxury lifestyle brand BLANK iTTi BLANK in River town, Detroit. With extensive Fashion and Interior Design experience she saw an open niche and developed various signature silhouettes, which span ready-to-wear, limited edition and one-of-a-kind offerings. The innovative textiles and surprise details have minimalistic architectural overtones, a life-long esthetic fascination. Her collection is represented at Orleans + Winder and other locations.

Piling also works as a Ghost-designer. Her clients broaden to established fine artists or companies who utilize these proprietary fabric canvas’s to create their own collection, which her company also constructs.

A S I A H A M I LT O N In her 20-year career as a photographer, Asia has cultivated a talent for capturing moments the way they are -- those rare, raw and precious glimpses of life that exist in between poses and pretense. She specializes in portraits, landscapes, textures and nudes and is drawn to existing, untouched composition, which she says, is a reflection of her own authenticity.

It was this strong sense of self that helped change her mind from working at her father’s beauty salon to pursuing photography. The first time she got behind the camera, she understood it was her primary lens to examine the world around her.

Since then, Asia’s work has taken her around the country and the world. She has shot celebrities, worked as a photojournalist for the Detroit Free Press, Detroit news and produced special projects for major corporations, including Ford Motor Co.

TALYA ASHFORD Talya Ashford is a licensed aesthetician and has been a professional makeup artist for over twenty-three years. Talya has worked in every genre of the makeup industry from producing a million-dollar retail counter at MAC cosmetics to salon ownership. As a much in demand artist Talya has created looks for film, runway, magazine print, and editorial campaigns as well commercial work. Talya is now exploring a career as an educator to continue to provide education and to mentor future artists. Talya takes pride in creating artistry that enhances the authentic, unique essence of every client she services.

Asia also owns Photo Sensei Tours, a hands-on workshop for beginner photographers, which is offered in Detroit, Dallas and Chicago.

tephanie and Tyrone Dickey are the dynamic duo better known as Stef-n-Ty. Most know them for their unique hats and stylish ladies wear. He handles the marketing affairs of the operation and she is fashion master-mind. United, their super-powers make them a phenomenon to be admired and a model to be replicated – especially for aspiring business partners who also happen to be soulmates.

Theirs is a brand twenty-seven years in the making. The pair met on a “subway train” as Ty calls it, in DC in 1991 and lived together about a year before marrying. Their next move together would be Harlem, New York and then Brooklyn; to Atlanta and back, and then Baltimore settling there for twelve years. Next was Philadelphia and then Chicago, where a

friend opened a salon and asked the couple to come there and work their business. They then decided to make their home in Detroit, but not before trying Baltimore once more. Ty says of Detroit, “We’ve been doing business here since the early 90’s. We always had a good wholesale market here and solid customer base.” The power couple has been living and working in the city nearly 8 years now. While Stef wrapped up things with a new client, Ty was happy to begin the interview until she could join us. One can only guess this is one of the many estimable dynamics of their relationship. He’s always had her back, and that’s just the way it is.

while working a job, and I had my own business. I just saw the clothes and thought they were really cool. I knew she was making them out of her home, and all I knew is that I wanted to help her. I knew she needed help and I thought, let me do what I can do. I started taking the clothes around DC, going to the salons and stores and wherever I could. I told her I was going to make her famous, so now she’s famous. Stef-n-Ty is now known in 8 countries and counting.

It keeps growing. We’ve got some things in London and Japan, Amsterdam, France.

admits she was heavily into the singing group The Pointer Sisters back then and always had hats herself. However, Stef is quick to explain that she doesn’t consider herself a milliner.

Stef: “Well, technically speaking, I’m not a milliner in the strictest sense. In other words, milliners use felts and silks and blocking, using steam and heat to build a hat. Those who work at that level don’t relate my process of hat making to how they make hats, so they wouldn’t consider me a milliner.”

Although Stef describes herself as merely a cut and sew hat maker, it is clear in every way she in fact is a milliner – a person who makes or sells women’s hats – and she’s been doing it for nearly three decades.

these, because even though it started out as a thing for people with natural hair, which is specifically our culture, it’s really crossed over quite a bit. I’ve had all kinds of people of different nationalities wear our hats.

Haute is: You have certainly covered a lot of ground over the years, making people incredibly happy with your hats and designs. It sounds like you have so much more to do in terms of expanding your brand. What does the future hold for Stef-n-Ty? Stef: Ty has always got some plan, he’s always coming to me with new creative ideas. We have a guy we’re working with doing the Stef-n-Ty action figures. Ty initially commissioned him to create the ones of he and I, and the artist liked them so much he is already doing the other characters from our comic book without even being asked. People get excited and start adding their input. So even sometimes things we don’t necessarily plan ourselves start happening because another person’s creativity is involved.

Ty has his sights set on he and Stef traveling abroad together and extending all that is Stef-nTy to major markets across the globe. As excited as we are for them to do big things, we can’t help but hope they never leave the city that has come to love them. “No matter where we are in the world, Detroit will be our home base,” Ty assures.
