, everyone’s taken a look at that gorgeous rock on your hand, and now it’s time to actually plan a wedding. No doubt you want everything to be perfect, from that princess gown to just the right floral arrangements…no one wants to see you have your first dance across a foliage of tacky flowers. Brides are quick to run to the newsstand for the latest bridal trends and start the daunting search for ‘The Perfect Gown.’ That’s the fun part, and luckily talented designers have worked, trained and practiced around-the-clock for entire lives sourcing the most exquisite textiles, beads, and craftsmanship to bring ethereal bridal gowns to reality and are going to make sure you will look precisely like the candyfloss fairytale bride you always knew you’d be.

However, these tales of embellished and embroidered works of art and cathedral-length train dreams do not take into consideration that they will be worn by a person who will at some point have to remove the veil from their face and show something that cannot be purchased or adorned. Even the most delicious diamond tiara, worthy of a royal wedding, must crown a face, and this face at the end of that dreamy day is you. Every top makeup artist and celebrity knows that the secret to flawless makeup is simply easy: good skin.

This guide is created through more than 50 years of prepping hundreds of discerning brides at our iconic and award-winning threegeneration Haute Custom Beauty Institute in Barcelona for this special day, not only as Co-Founders of HCB but also through our passion, lifelong research and skincare expertise. There is one simple but common goal, for our brides to be the very best version of themselves on that day.

Haute Custom Beauty

is a skincare brand born from an American research institute established 36 years ago headquartered in Austin and a Barcelona Spa established over 50 years ago. It was founded to revolutionize skincare with a core focus on new generation formulas that use only the best actives, biotechnology and natural extracts from around the world. Haute Custom Beauty spent three years researching skin and was able to segment it into 800+ different skin profiles. This allowed us to create effective dermatological formulas that yield outxstanding noticeable results and at the same time don’t gamble with our customer’s health by eliminating studied controversial chemicals, preservatives and allergens that are still widely used today by most of the skincare industry.

Our research and headquarters are in Austin, and our Atelier, Beauty Institute, and manufacturing is done in Barcelona.

We have divided this guide into time periods,

you’ve got what seems like a world tour agenda from here on out to orchestrate everything from flowers, gown fittings, appetizers-through-cake choices and even where to sit that one aunt so she won’t start World War III with that cousin she can’t stand. If you’ve come across this guide at a time closer to your wedding it doesn’t mean you can’t rush or skip through some of these steps a little bit, but pay close attention where we note a high concern on doing certain beauty steps or procedures too close to your wedding date.

We have seen it all, including brides with patchy self-tanning jobs, choppy horror movie hair, overly-plucked eyebrows that warranted a lawsuit and blinding-fake white teeth. You may want to share this guide with your mom or other family members involved in your wedding. Brides can quickly forget that while they will be the center of attention that day, close family members, and bridesmaids, are a close second, and that they are often also guilty of the same beauty mistakes brides make. Remember that the bridal photos that you will treasure for years to come also include family members and bridesmaids, and that this is also a special day for them.

If you don’t know

how you will want to wear your hair on the big day, don’t worry, but at this point you will want to have an idea of who you will want to do your hair. If you might be wanting to try something different such as a different hair color or hairstyle, now is the time to start exploring. Remember, if your hair needs to grow out some, or you need to start experimenting with the color, you need at least six months to adjust. You won’t yet do your hair trial but it’s good to keep this in mind from now on forward.

Book your stylist, good stylists book sometimes months in advance so have this in place.

Good makeup artists also book very well in advance so while you won’t yet have a trial run yet, go ahead and book your makeup artist.

I advice to make sure there is some sort of professional contract in place so you know this is all set and secured.

Keep in mind that until you have your dress, selecting a hairstyle would be pointless because a dress can dramatically affect this.

CLEANSING

Cleansing is the foundation to having beautiful skin.

Without proper cleansing, using the ideal cleanser, the game is lost before it even begins. Sebum, dirt, grime and even pollution accumulate on your skin every day, no matter your lifestyle or who you are. Proper skin cleansing purifies your complexion and allows the nutrients and actives you add with your skincare to be properly absorbed and utilized. There is a cleanser for all skin profiles, therefore there is no excuse for skipping this very important step morning and night. If someone complains about getting dry skin because they cleanse their skin, that’s becuase they are using the wrong cleanser for their profile. Also, a treatment cleanser can add benefits, help with skin regeneration, provide antioxidants and magnify skincare results.

MARINE CLEANSING GELS The MARINE CLEANSING GELS all feature plankton extract, natural emollients, antioxidants from Cranberry Fruit Extract and Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA’s) to purify, exfoliate and repair skin leaving a healthy glow and preparing the skin for treatment. TONING

It restores your skin’s pH level. Lets not get too technical with this, but just know that you need the pH level to be at a certain spot so that everything you add afterwards works at its full potential and your skin remains healthy.

Have you seen the stains on the glass in your shower? Water is hard and it stains because it is full of sediments and elements that you don’t want sitting on your face. A tonic removes those sediments left behind by the water you will use to rinse your cleanser.

A good Tonic finishes off the cleansing job (even with a fabulous cleanser you will note some dirt on the cotton pad you use to apply your Tonic with) and a good Tonic even adds treatment benefits to boost overall results.

Tonics got a bad reputation because frankly there were a lot of really bad formulas in the past. I always tell everyone in my Master Class that a Tonic is the cheapest beauty secret!

Using a Tonic is essential in skincare and it acts like an additive. Skipping this simple step means you are wasting a percentage of all the extracts and actives that you apply during your beauty ritual.

has consistently revealed that UVA and UVB rays not only increase the likelihood to develop skin cancer, but also that it is the main cause of premature aging. Premature aging is the simple term to basically say you are getting older quicker than you should. Photoaging damage is shown by deeper wrinkles, dark spots, and less radiant skin. I use a simple guide to remind our clients how the sun radiation works.

UVB ends in “B” for Burning. These are the rays that we are all used to understanding, because they are the rays responsible for skin burning, and for that warm feeling that we all get when we go to the beach.

UVA ends in “A” for Aging. These are the rays that you don’t quite ‘feel’ but that are always there, even on a Winter day, and they penetrate the deepest layer of the skin and cause premature aging which shows up as wrinkles and dark spots.

Last but not least, the latest dermatological studies talk about radiation created by smartphone or laptop screens, white light, and even a hairdryer. SLEEP You have some long but exciting 6 months ahead, make it a point to factor into your schedule a good night’s sleep.

Your body repairs itself and recovers when you sleep, so a healthy dose of snoozing is recommended to boost beauty results. That would be 7 to 9 hours per night.

Collagen is produced when you sleep, collagen is what we all in beauty think of as ‘the fountain of youth’ and is what keeps our skin tight, uncreased and plump.

Blood flow works better when you are sleeping and having less blood flow to the skin surrounding your face can encourage a dull look.

Your eyes will look puffy and get dark circles if you don’t sleep enough. The reason we all joke about people who have plastic surgery looking ‘rested’ is precisely this, resting well helps your eyes and face look refreshed.

Blood flow during sleep also helps hair follicles be healthy, and it can help with hair issues such as hair loss, breakage, damage or growth.

We lose more water during our sleep, it is estimated that up to 25% more water loss. Be generous with your moisturizer at night. A generous amount of moisturizer at night helps with the renewal and restoration process and when you wake up you will have a beautiful plump complexion.

SMILE

Your smile is the center of attention,

if there is anything going on with your teeth that you are not comfortable with, don’t delay. Schedule a routine teeth cleansing and talk with your dentist. Consider a professional teeth whitening and schedule it, but don’t schedule this any closer than two months before your wedding. You don’t want any worse-case-scenario gum irritation side effects during your wedding, but most importantly while you want to have a sparkling smile, you don’t want this to look too white and fake, this does not look good in the photos. You want your guests to think “here comes the bride” and not “here comes a white denture!” Make sure you follow-up after your teeth whitening with proper dental hygiene and consider using a whitening toothpaste for maintenance.

MEDICAL BEAUTY

Should there be

a medical aesthetic touch-up you may want such as Botox or a filler, this is the time to schedule a consultation. Anything you do, be very conservative, you want to look like yourself in your wedding. If this is something you want, you shouldn’t schedule any procedure any closer than 3-4 months to your wedding. Remember that a Botox, filler or other medical procedure will only tackle what I like to call a more ‘structural concern’, but healthy skin, a radiant glow, and a natural flawless complexion is achieved only with proper skincare.

A HAND TO HOLD

you will have noticed that not only you look down at your wedding finger numerous times during the day, but you’ll catch friends and family taking a glimpse of that hand. Healthy hands and nails are always nice, but especially nice at a time where your hands will go from being the backup choir girl to the forefront performing diva of the show. Use a good quality hand moisturizer at least 3 times a day. Opt for something buttery but non greasy. When washing your hands try to use lukewarm water. Water that is too cold or too hot damages the skin on the hands. Never use dish soap on your hands, it is formulated to cut and dissolve grease and is way too harsh on the skin. Scrub your hands at least once a week to get rid of any dead skin cells. Without getting rid of dead cell buildup the moisturizing and nurturing agents won’t penetrate the skin. Always follow with a moisturizer. You may consider applying a cuticle cream or oil at night to prevent cuticles from getting rough or looking dry. Apply sunscreen on your hands during the day, hand dark spots are some of the hardest to get rid of and they are a clear giveaway to someone’s age. Wearing sunscreen on your hands is one of the best beauty tips we can give you. You may also extend sunscreen application to your arms. If you have dark spots you don’t like you can use a brightening treatment on your hands, along with a glycolic daily wash such as our MARINE RENEWAL TREATMENT GEL to boost results. If you want more dramatic or quicker results you will want to include some LED light treatments or a stronger lactic or glycolic peel in addition to a hand brightening beauty ritual.

usually don’t start worrying about their neck until it’s too late, in addition, when we get brides ready they loose sight that while they typically don’t go around with strapless gowns and strapy dresses, that on this special day they are going to be showcasing their neck and décolleté like never before, and that they will be photographed more than they haver ever been photographed.

A pampered neck and décolleté area is instrumental for a bride to look fresh, ethereal and classic. Bridal gowns are most often styled in a way where the neck and décolleté areas are exposed and showcased.

When we get brides ready for their big day, they usually forget that this is an area they also need to prepare, especially on a day where they will be photographed more than ever before.

You should start caring for your neck and décolleté areas with the same care as your face three months prior to your wedding. It is important to nurture, protect and repair the skin in this area to keep it elastic, tight and with a healthy tone. If you notice, most profile pictures include the neck, and depending on how that is contoured or textured, the entire profile of a person can look quite different.

A very simple daily morning and night massage using a treatment and nourishing cream will ensure that your neck looks like a swan’s neck on your special day. You may have never obsessed about your back, but if you are going to be showing your back you need to make sure that it is in tip-top shape. If there are any blemishes or dryness we suggest to schedule a couple of back facials before your wedding. If you do have a back blemish issue you can incorporate an AHA cleanser into your shower routine and perhaps use a long wash cloth so that you can reach all the areas.

THE MAKEUP TRIAL

When you meet with your makeup artist

you’ll want to figure out your look and make sure you or a friend takes pictures of your look, remember that whatever you see in the mirror is often different than what you see on a photo. This will be the time to see if your makeup artist is doing something too dramatic or if what is being done needs an extra punch.

Find old photos of yourself with makeup where you liked how you look, while this is a very special day you still want to make sure you look like yourself. Don’t depend on Instagram ideas because those are usually highly filtered images.

We could say this is the final stretch when it comes to beauty. A dress can be mended, a pair of earrings sourced, but when it comes to your skin, you will need to focus on these last two months, skin cannot be fixed with a fairytale magic wand, and remember even the best makeup artist is not a miracle worker.

warning Make sure that whatever makeup your makeup artist is using in this test is the same makeup they will use on your wedding day and pay close attention to any skin reaction you might have. Professional makeup can certainly yield movie star results but depending on their ingredients it can be harsh to the skin. Some people may react and this skin reaction could be very unattractive.

This is when you will want to have your hair trial.

Make sure that when you go to the trial you bring anything you might want to wear in or with your hair. Whatever you thought sounded like a wonderful idea might look gorgeous or might look like something landed on your head, so do a proper and fully realistic hair trial.

Speak up! The hair trial is for YOU to love your hair, so this is the time to communicate with your stylist to make sure that the look created is one that you love and feel comfortable in. This is the time where you may also consider to take along that good friend that can never keep their opinion to themselves and not just the friend that may always just say “you look great!”

At this time you know that we don’t want you to experiment with anything, keep doing what you have been doing on a diligent basis but pay special attention to try to work in activities that we know typically make our wondering minds relax, whether its a movie night or a run in the park, you know what works for you.

At a time where we find ourselves nervous we find ourselves even touching our faces more often, just keep sight of that and keep that healthy skin healthy by not touching your face with dirty hands.

Make an extra effort to get a full night’s sleep every night. This is not only going to help your body and skin look rested and restored, but also will help your overall emotional stability and stress in a week that is sure to be a bit of an emotional roller coaster.

Give yourself the treat of a massage during this week,

you will surely have some wedding stress and this will be quite beneficial. Many spas offer a couples massage, this is a very nice experience. Do NOT let the massage therapist touch your face! Also ask them to use a body oil with no scent or essential oils. Essential oils can often cause allergic reactions on some people and you definitely don’t want this. Typically a good almond oil or coconut oil should work beautifully on your body.

At our Beauty Institute we often see that even some brides-to-be that had never had issues with blemishes or breaking out, that due to the nervousness, they sometimes have some slight breaking out as they get closer to the wedding. If you should have any blemishes come up, treat the area with an AHA cleanser and a Balancing Tonic just to make sure it heals quicker and its inflammation goes down.

Don’t fret, just do what you can if this happens and your makeup artist is used to having to cover-up these, but help them out a bit with a product that will bring in soothing, drying and anti-inflammatory ingredients to the area.

1 week to the day

Pedicure

Schedule your pedicure 5-6 days before your wedding. It is sometimes possible that when getting a pedicure you may have some post-pedi sensitivity or that you might even have some post-pedi pain on one of your toes. The very last thing that you want is to have any sort of toe or foot sensitivity or pain during your wedding where not only will you be wearing new shoes, but you will also be a long time on your feet and even dancing. If you need any touch ups these can easily be done when you get your manicure.

Avoid very salty foods as these will cause water retention and bloating.

We encourage our brides-to-be to drink plenty of water and make sure they are getting their antioxidants. A lot of berries will have nice nutrients and increasing your vegetable intake will also help with inner hydration.

warning No waxing anything on your face or underarms allowed this close to your wedding, unless you are very experienced with waxing and you’re sure your skin doesn’t have a negative reaction such as a rash or a breakout. Unless you have been waxing before this is not the time to experiment. Any waxing should be done no closer than 8 days before your wedding.

Manicure

Schedule your manicure up to 3 days before your wedding but ideally the day before, this is one area where you want this to be done as close to your day as possible, but don’t schedule it on the day of, you won’t have time. Accidents happen, make sure that if you use any polish color that you can purchase for touch-ups in case there is a last minute chip. The last thing you want to do is have to stress over a chipped nail on your big day.

If you didn’t try anything on your skin before, this is not the time to experiment with anything. Just keep doing what you have been doing.

NIGHT BEFORE BEAUTY RITUAL

You are surely excited about The Day, but it is quite important that you try to get a perfect night’s sleep. Also equally important that you don’t skip your night beauty ritual and make sure and include a treatment mask. This night be a little extra generous with the amount of products you use, and a little more thorough. These are some extra tips for that night.

Purchase a body scrub and the night before do a full body scrub while taking a shower. Don’t go too harsh but pay close attention to elbows and arms. Follow with your body balm or body oil.

When you apply your cleanser be a little more thorough than usual, massage a generous amount of your cleanser and use upwards circular and upwards movements, almost as if you were giving yourself a facial massage.

Apply two dosages of your Tonic after the cleanser. I like to apply first using one side of a cotton pad, and a second time by turning over the cotton pad and smoothing one last gentle sweep across the face. If you have sensitive skin apply Tonic only once and do so with your hands by doing gentle touches and upwards movements.

Apply a generous amount of the CAVIAR SUBLIME EYE BALM and with gentle upwards movements apply your MOISTURIZER.

Finish up with your NECK AND DÉCOLLETÉ treatment, again be generous and thorough.

We all know that not very often grooms-to-be

take as much care as they should, however they will be photographed as much as the bride, and can take some very simple steps for a very polished-up appearance. It never ceases to amaze me what a major transformation I can quickly see when I see grooms-to-be walk into our Spa and follow just the basic skincare steps for 1-2 months. Brides spend a lot of time and care to prepare themselves for this day it is only respectful that a groom presents himself in the same manner.

warning It is very typical for grooms to want to do a groomsmen ritual of going to a barber shop and perhaps try an old-school shave with a straight razor. This is never the time to experiment with that and we have seen horror stories of men who had never gone to a barbershop for a shave who decided to experiment before their wedding only to have their face and neck breakout or develop rash and sensitivity. If you are going to want to go through this ritual make sure that you try this out first starting several weeks ahead of your wedding and try this at least a couple of times.

If it works well assess whether you need to do it the day before your wedding or the day of depending on how your hair grows and how you want your facial hair to look.

From the moment you get engaged follow a basic but well-diagnosed and thorough skincare ritual. You will have many events and be in hundreds of photos and you will want to look your best, not just for the photos and the person you are marrying, but also for yourself.

Make sure you know if you will want to wear your hair in any certain way, and allow at least 3 months for a hair consultation if you will want to do anything different with your hair.

The big decision of whether to wear facial hair or not should be addressed.

Either way works well and it is a personal choice, however if you are going to wear a beard, you need to schedule a trial clean-up or trim a month ahead and then schedule a clean-up or trim a 3-5 of days before the wedding. There are many beard oils and products to ensure that you want to wear your facial hair that it can look groomed and properly taken care of.

If you want to wear that perfect stubble, practice makes perfect. Shave and keep track on how many days it takes for you to have the stubble at that sweet spot. Is it 3 days or 5 days? Everyone is quite different, so make sure you shave and write it down and then keep track.

It is your wedding and you can do whatever you want in the end, however if you don’t normally wear a mustache, this not the time to experiment and have a look that will just look plain odd on you to all your family members and friends.

So you aren’t the kind of guy that wants to groom your eyebrows fine, but at the very least pluck any stray hairs between your brows…a unibrow is rarely handsome. Also this is the time where you want to invest in a simple trimmer and get rid of any rogue ear or nose hairs.

A simple men’s mani-pedi is something offered by most salons and it will make your nails look tidy. Schedule this anytime during the week before your wedding.

Men tend to produce more sebum and have thicker skin, therefore their skin can often have more impurities and black pores.

It would be recommended for you to get a facial a month ahead of the wedding, and if the facialist sees appropriate to schedule another facial for one week before the wedding. A facial ensure the skin is purified and that it looks healthy and elastic, which will definitely show-up on the photos.

Make sure that the back of the neck is trimmed, men tend to grow hair quickly and this can look very dirty, usually a neck trim and cleanup 2-3 days before the wedding is recommended.

With that said their style and appearance almost becomes a frame that highlights the beauty and style of your wedding. Brides typically don’t feel any shame to tell their bridesmaids what color to wear and even what style of dress, but they often stop at that. A flattering, elegant, timeless dress on your bridesmaids is as important as making sure the grooming basics are taken care of.

One of the most beautiful things about a wedding is that you get to share this with your family and friends. However don’t hesitate to think for a quick second that your wedding guests aren’t going to partly judge your wedding style based on the proper grooming of your bridesmaids, and also know that there will be almost as many eyes on your mum as there are on you. Here are some suggestions for your bridesmaids: Organize a manicure party with all your bridesmaids. Nails don’t all have to match but you may want to all agree on a color palette at least. While nail art can be fun, it is not really wedding appropriate so I would make sure that you have a sly comment that you don’t want to see any nail art on your big day. Have a bridesmaids dress fitting party and have everyone schedule a facial or massage on the same day. If you have a bridesmaids beauty day you can often also schedule a brow design or touch up session, you’d be surprised at how much someone’s look can change and ‘clean up’ with a brow design or maintenance.

Eyes are so important for an overall look and it automatically will style each bridesmaid’s look. Make sure that everyone has waterproof eye makeup such as the mascara and pencil to ensure that things don’t get ugly in those happy tear moments for everyone. You don’t want your photographer to have to spend extra time on Photoshop because of that one bridesmaid’s raccoon eye.
