From the Renaissance days where a double chin was considered sexy, to tanning skin, which became a symbol of prosperity in the 1960’s stemming from being able to tan in the Mediterranean, a tenacious juxtaposition from the European pale skin ideals of the 16th century when a very toxic mixture of vinegar and white lead called Venetian Ceruse was applied to bleach and lighten skin, sometimes in combination with plucking the hairline to attain a larger, pale forehead. All this was later exported through colonialism to Asia and Africa which further developed into beauty ideals and versions within each culture.

It is “the” essential first step for ultimate skin health, and any other steps, even applying the most exquisite serum in the world would almost be a waste if skin is not purified or exfoliated properly. It’s a misconception to believe that our skin doesn’t get dirty while we sleep. HOW TO USE The Cleansing Gels were formulated to be applied ‘dry’ which means to squeeze some gel onto dry hands, and massage over dry skin, then rinse well with water. This ensures the AHA concentration percentage is not diluted, and also allows you to avoid any sensitive areas such as the area around the nostrils or other.

Start by applying the gel, massaging, and immediately rinsing off with water, and work up to leaving the gel on skin 3-10 minutes before rinsing, as tolerated. Always follow with a toner.

We don’t believe or intend on discrediting any product or brand that includes these ingredients, this is just our own formulation philosophy.

We wouldn’t use these ingredients on our skin or on our own family, so we won’t put them on yours.

We love natural, however, and while we have nothing against them as I grew up in Austin keeping it weird, we are not hippies, we want real, visible results. We embrace botanical extracts, but are using very cool, new biotech ingredients which are showing through research to have fabulous results that rival some of the most common medical beauty procedures.

These are used extensively in ’natural’ skincare, but also in many skincare products that you can even find at your dermatologist office.

Furanocoumarins, compounds found in citrus oils, increase UV sensitivity.

Photosensitivity side effects can cause discoloration and dark spots when exposed to UV rays.

Remember this doesn’t only happen when you are outside, UVA for example penetrates glass and affects your skin indoors or while in a car, even in Winter.

F R AG R A N T ESSENTIAL OILS S U C H A S L AV E N D E R , S A N DA LWO O D A N D R O S E M A RY. While these are lovely for other applications such as for aromatherapy, they can be irritating and inflammatory for skin.

Any potential benefits that they could have, such as their antioxidants, are outweighed by their sensitizing properties.

Even if you don’t see the irritation, this is slow, cumulative and it’s happening under your skin. Not only can it cause allergies, redness or dermatitis, but it can actually age skin.

ANYTHING MINTY OR “FRESH”.

Ingredients such as spearmint, peppermint, mint, menthol and eucalyptus may seem very refreshing and even have a nice cooling effect, but they can also irritate, sensitize, cause allergies, dryness and skin damage that can lead to fine lines and other aging effects.

POLLUTION IS FAST FORWARDING OUR AGING PROCESS Dermatolagical research shows that when pollution comes into contact with skin, often with particles which are 20 times smaller than a pore which make it easier to penetrate skin, it can cause inflammation, dehydration and collagen breakdown, which can lead to dark spots, deeper lines and loss of elasticity.

A study in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology studied women in urban vs. rural environments over 24 years and found that those exposed to increased pollution had more dark spots and wrinkles.

TYPES OF POLLUTION

UV RADIATION UVA and UVB rays are mostly associated to photo aging (wrinkles, dark spots, discoloration and of course skin cancer).

OXIDES Nitrogen oxides results from combustion creating NO2, which causes oxidation and could even cause atopic dermatitis, which has steadily increased in the past years in urban areas for this reason.

PAH’S Absorbed through skin by pollutants such as residual wood burning and exhaust fumes.

Associated to skin aging and dark spots and in some studies it is even linked to skin cancer as they produce what is called epoxides and diols which bind to DNA and causes alterations.

OZONE Reduces antioxidants and causes inflammation, has been associated with eczema and atopic dermatitis.

PARTICULATE MATTER Particles from factories, power plants, construction and fires including metals, ions, organic compounds, reactive gases and carbon particles. Studies indicate correlation between this and dark spots and wrinkles.

WHAT TO DO ABOUT POLLUTION?

VOC’S Emissions from paints, varnishes, car and factory emissions. May cause inflammation and contribute to flaring up atopic dermatitis or eczema.

Inflammation contributes to general deterioration of collagen which is what gives us firmness and elasticity.

Includes carcinogens and free radicals causing lipid peroxideation.

They activate skin water loss and degeneration of connective tissue in the skin which leads to deeper lines (periorbital wrinkling) and rough texture, it is all often referred to as “smokers face.” It is also associated to psoriasis and in studies it is seen as there being a higher prevalence of acne amongst smokers or those exposed to second hand smoke.

Cleansing becomes a crucial step to remove some of the pollution that our skin is exposed to on a daily basis. The use of potent antioxidants, or what we like to call super-antioxidants is what works better to scavenge and neutralize the effects of some of these free radicals. When we talk about antioxidants we are talking about much more than just plain old Vitamin C, because while we love it, there are many other biothec antioxidants derived from botanical extracts that have stronger antioxidant properties without being harsh or irritating to skin to be used year round for all skin types.

It is always important to separate what something like this does, and we like to say that it is ’structural’ as it works on the muscle, which is the structure upon which your skin ‘lays’ on, therefore it targets wrinkles at the source, but it does not actually treat skin.

This is the reason why if someone wants to soften lines, getting botulinum toxin injections is an effective route, but they will still want to treat and pamper their skin otherwise it tends to leave a very plastic-like, almost cardboard appearance. Lines and wrinkles are also the result of photoaging, dehydrated skin, environmental damage and of course aging.

The effects last somewhere between 3 to 6 months, it is not magic, so you want to keep treating lines and wrinkles the entire time to keep skin texture elastic and a soft skin appearance.

While it can be used on many facial and neck muscles, it is most commonly used around the eye region to soften crow’s feet, around the forehead, and it is very effective and almost the only thing you can often do for what we call the ‘A ngry 11’ which are the two lines that often form between the eyebrows, where we have a fairly strong muscle, and can make someone appear almost angry even when they are not. In many cases this is only softened by the use or injection of a botulinum toxin.

At our spa we have been successful at softening those lines with a combination of a client getting botulinum toxin injections and also us doing some strong micro needling on those lines, because just because the muscle is put to rest it doesn’t mean that it will always make the existing lines go away and you want to target them from both angles.

There are some slight risks, and the medical provider who may inject you is who would be the most qualified professional to tell you what those might be and to get an assessment.

However, this is not a place where you want to skimp, you want to use the best injector you can find. We have seen thousands of clients who get this done, we are not against it, on some clients we even tell them they should. However, we have seen some good results and some not so wonderful results. You want your lines to relax, but you still want to look like yourself.

FILLER FOR SAGGING AREAS

FACIAL FILLERS ARE MEDICAL GRADE SUBSTANCES WHICH ARE INJECTED INTO SKIN TO SMOOTH WRINKLES AND PLUMP CERTAIN AREAS. As we age our skin loses fat, collagen and elastin which give structure to our face, and what typically adds plumpness and bounciness.

THEREFORE THESE INJECTIONS USUALLY GO IN AREAS THAT HAVE LOST VOLUME SUCH AS UNDER EYES, CHEEKS, LIPS, JAWLINES AND TEMPLES TO RE-PLUMP. Some fillers are just a substance that are used to plump those areas but there are others which also stimulate the body’s own collagen production to help with the plumping even further.

Hyaluronic acid is one of the ingredients in fillers which is a naturally-occurring substance produced by the human body.

Fillers are temporary, some which last 12 months, others

promise to last a couple of years. There are different types and brands of fillers and depending on the area being injected one might be a better choice according to the viscosity of the substance.

Plumping lips is different than filling cheeks for example, which may need something with a thicker, higher density for it to give a more structural property.

Some brands of fillers you may see are Juvèderm®, Restylane®, Radiuses®, Sculptra®, Bellafill®, Belotero®, etc. Whoever is the injector will know what is the most appropriate filler depending on the area and condition of the being treated.

WHAT’S OUR TAKE ON IT? Fillers can get a little more complicated in regards to the results we often see. Just like botulinum toxin, we are not against fillers, and on some clients we recommend them and have seen good results, nevertheless we strongly believe that a ‘less is more’ approach is a good starting point. You can always add more.

Fillers can dramatically change the structural angles of someone’s face so it can very quickly make them look like someone else, and not always in a good way.

A good injector is not just a medical professional but they also have to be an artist of aesthetics, so this needs to be

highly considered when selecting someone to get fillers from.If we have learned anything after working with thousands of clients at our spa is that not having wrinkles or sagging areas on your face due to a high amount of fillers and botulinum toxic does not always mean the person looks younger, in fact sometimes it does the opposite effect.

WHAT IS THE POWER OF PEPTIDES?

Peptides are fragments of proteins made up of amino acids and they are the fundamental blocks of skin. Peptides in skin work on texture, firmness and appearance of wrinkles. They can ‘re-teach’ skin to work in a certain way so that skin in a way is revived. Not all peptides are created equally, there are hundreds of peptides, including some very advanced peptides created through recent biotech research for elevated results.

LASER

THE WORD LASER ALONE IMPLIES SOMETHING ALMOST FUTURISTIC AND SUPER STRONG, WHILE WE ACTUALLY LIKE LASERS AND RECOMMEND THEM TO SOME CLIENTS, THERE ARE DIFFERENT TYPES AND DEPENDING ON YOUR SPECIFIC SKIN CONDITION OR TYPE WE HAVE SEEN WONDERFUL RESULTS, OTHER TIMES RESULTS ARE NOT TOO NOTICEABLE, AND THEN IN SOME OTHER CASES WE HAVE EVEN SEEN SKIN DAMAGE.

Therefore you want to make sure you are doing the laser that makes the most sense for you and for your skin type and that you are going to the best laser professional you can get yourself to.

Some lasers are better targeted for surface scars and other signs of damage, while others work more in the deeper layers to stimulate collagen.

SOMETIMES PEOPLE EXPECT BIGGER RESULTS THAN THEY GET, or they might confuse the swelling that comes immediately after some lasers as plumping of the skin and may be disappointed when a few weeks later they don’t see a huge difference. Several lasers require multiple treatments, so if you are getting one of those types of lasers make sure that you are willing to repeat the treatment in the recommended sequence.

SO WE DO THINK THEY CAN GET YOU SOME WONDERFUL RESULTS, BUT WE MUST ALWAYS HAVE REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS. A laser is a focused beam of light which can target a specific color to target something such as a brown spot or unwanted hair follicle, without affecting the skin around it. So depending on the light wavelength you can target different concerns. For example, blood absorbs yellow light wavelengths so these would help with skin redness. Other lasers go deeper to heat and stimulate collagen growth to reduce lines and wrinkles and help plump skin.

This is some very general information regarding lasers, they are constantly changing, improving, and each laser could warrant an entire chapter alone.

THE 2 UMBRELLAS OF LASERS ABLATIVE This means that the laser does its work on the surface of the skin which is the epidermis, it works on the outer layer by wounding it in a way where it removes the outer layer so the new one can regrow, but doesn’t go much deeper into other layers other than heating the underlying skin to stimulate collagen growth.

There is more downtime with ablative lasers as your skin has to follow its natural process to heal.

NONABLATIVE These ones don’t affect the surface of the skin, but penetrate through to the tissues beneath. These ones create heat for a controlled, more internal wound, to stimulate new collagen.

LASER TYPES CO2 Lasers This is ablative and it uses carbon dioxide to create a beam of light, this type of laser is absorbed well by water and body tissue has a high quantity of this, so it works well. This is the most intense option. It targets dermis and epidermis so it helps with the epidermal cells plus stimulates collagen production in the dermis to help tighten and plump skin over time. This one is used for fine lines, wrinkles, discoloration and acne scars. It also has the longest downtime.

IPL and BBL Lasers Dark spots are very small pockets of pigment or blood cells trapped under the skin’s surface. IPL and BBL target those cells in the collagen pockets causing them to break apart so they can disappear during the healing process.

This is an intense pulse of light (IPL), not technically a laser, which works well for penetrating red and brown pigments which is why this is used a lot for dark spots and to relieve blood vessels which are beneath the

skin’s surface. There can be hyperpigmentation in darker skin tones. BBL stands for Broadband Light and it is a more advanced, later version of IPL as it targets the imperfections at the source, well below the surface, also BBL is seen to have more long-lasting effects at reducing sings of aging.

YAG Lasers These used a type of crystal, neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet crystal, to produce an infrared wavelength that allows it to reach deeper layers. It can treat spider veins, varicose veins, birthmark, facial veins and hemangioma tumors, and also effective for dark spots.

Alexandrite Lasers This uses a green gemstone to create a laser in a wavelength that penetrates red spots, these are used to treat blood vessels, but also for hair and tattoo removal.

Fractionated Lasers Some fractional lasers pinpoint some specific areas beneath the skin rather than the entire area which causes a damage in a polka-dot pattern, to speed up recovery (vs. a full surface damage.)

Erbium Lasers These use a white metal to create an infrared beam, often used for skin resurfacing and scars. It is slightly less harsh than other skin resurfacing lasers.

Pulsed Dye Lasers This uses a yellow wavelength that can penetrate red pigments which makes it great for treating inflamed blood vessels. Also it is used for acne and scars.

WHEN SHOULD YOU GET A LASER TREATMENT? Some of the ablative treatments require more down time and there is more surface damage to skin WE WOULD SUGGEST TO DO THIS DURING THE LATE FALL OR WINTER AS IT MAKES IT EASIER TO STAY AWAY FROM THE SUN FOR A WHILE. For other types of laser, we still think it is best to be able to stay away from the sun as we often see with clients that skin is sensitized for a little while.

HOW SHOULD YOU P R EPARE FOR A LASER TREATM ENT ?

Every type of laser has different requirements, and the medical professional whom you get a laser from is who will ultimately tell you what you need to do, however we suggest that for around 2 weeks prior you stop the use of any retinol or retinoid and alpha hydroxy acids, especially glycolic acid, and anything that is too strong. You will want to avoid sun also, and for some types of laser if you have any recent sun damage they won’t be able to perform the laser treatment at all. Healthy skin tends to bounce back better, so you want to have well-hydrated skin to begin with.

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO AFTER YOUR LASER TREATMENT? Every laser has different post-care instructions, however for the most part we always recommend the following:

Don’t use retinol, retinoids or alpha hydroxy acids for at least 1-2 weeks after your laser treatment.

Use a very soothing and healing serum, the use of certain peptides, ceramides and soothing botanical extracts will help skin bounce back and get you nicer results from the laser.

Especially the day you receive treatment, and 2-3 days after your treatment you need a high amount of these ingredients, more than you are used to applying. We usually recommend our clients to apply a healing and soothing serum 3-5 times a day for at least 3-5 days.

Hydration is your best friend, you want to keep skin clean and hydrated. You may think about applying a moisturizer three times a day for a few days to make sure skin gets enough of this to help with healing and inflammation.

Protection is an absolute must, ideally not just SPF protection but blue light and infrared radiation protection. You want to stay away from the sun, but remember that even if you are indoors, unless you move into a cave, you are still getting UV damage, so you need to protect your skin. Also depending on the type of treatment you got, your skin will be new skin which is much more susceptible to sun damage, so you will want to protect your skin more than ever for a while.

CHEMICAL PEELS THIS PROCEDURE USES A CHEMICAL SOLUTION REMOVING LAYERS OF SKIN TO REVEAL YOUNGER, FRESHER SKIN. OFTEN PERFORMED TO REDUCE LINES, ACNE, SCARS OR DISCOLORATION.

There are some obvious benefits to chemical peels, but we also have seen that it sometimes sensitizes skin too much, or leaves skin too susceptible to sun damage which defeats the purpose of the treatment altogether.

Immediately after, your skin will most likely be red and appear irritated, and there may also be some swelling.

WE SUGGEST TO KEEP SKIN CLEAN, TO APPLY HEALING AND RESTORATIVE INGREDIENTS, AND TO APPLY SOOTHING MOISTURE. ALSO DURING THE DAY AN OBSESSIVE APPLICATION OF SPF AND BLUE LIGHT PROTECTION AS SKIN CAN GET MORE SUN DAMAGE THAN USUAL FOR A FEW WEEKS AFTERWARDS SINCE THE SKIN IS FRESHER SKIN. Depending on the chemical used, and time of exposure, it determines how deep of a peel is done and also how long of a downtime you will need. Ultimately skin needs to heal for you to shed old skin and rebuild new skin.

We used to perform more chemical peels in the past at the spa, however today’s active lifestyle involves too much exposure to the exterior where we don’t always think someone will take proper care of their skin and it might ultimately leave skin too weak. What we more often do is the use of glycolic cleansers 2-4 times a week which act as an almost micro-peel with no side effects, and while it does not do a dramatic skin shed, it gives a lot of the benefits without sensitizing skin too much.

SUPERFICIAL PEELS These use milder acids such as a lactic acid or salicylic acid. Skin may temporarily have a slight irritation or discoloration, but after 4-7 days it should be healed.

MEDIUM PEELS They may use glycolic acid or trichloroacetic acid to reach middle and outer layers. While the immediate healing takes about a week, skin could potentially have some redness for weeks or months. There will likely be some swelling and even crusting of some areas of your skin.

DEEP PEELS Typically use phenol or tricholoracetic acid and they penetrate to the middle layer of the skin to remove more damaged skin cells. There is usually swelling and redness and there is usually a burning sensation. It takes about two weeks for new skin to develop but there is likely a process that includes crusting, cysts, and redness. It is very common to have redness for months and sensitized skin for some time.

SENSITIVE SKIN THE DISPARITY BETWEEN

SENSITIVE SKIN AND SENSITIZED SKIN Sensitive skin can be due to many reasons, including someone’s genetic makeup which causes the protective skin barrier to have less properties to defend itself or to have inflammation due to an immune system response which causes irritation and redness. There are also different dermatological conditions such as rosacea and dermatitis that may cause this, and you want to use the right skincare products so that you don’t flare up skin that is already on high alert.

SENSITIVE SKIN TYPICALLY IS SKIN THAT IS NOT ABLE TO TOLERATE CERTAIN INGREDIENTS OR HARSH CONDITIONS SUCH AS CERTAIN CLIMATES. Allergic responses to a certain ingredient does not always mean someone has sensitive skin, they may just be allergic to something. For every ingredient in the world, there is likely someone out there who may be allergic to it. We have even had clients who are allergic to something as innocent and soothing as aloe! I am myself allergic to cold. If I am in certain cold climates or submerged in cold water for more than a couple of minutes my body breaks out in hives.

Sometimes skin that has been using harsh products or has undergone a procedure that left it irritated or with some level of inflammation may leave skin in a state where it can very easily and quickly get irritated.

Ingredients that can sensitize skin vary depending on each skin type, however there are many sensitizing ingredients which include even natural extracts such as rosemary oil, lavender, eucalyptus, mint and citrus oils and extracts. Also, sometimes there are stronger actives and ingredients that may be beneficial to someone’s skin, however they are perhaps being used in a frequency or concentration that is not adequate for their skin profile, or they are not preparing their skin correctly where such ingredient may cause a sensitized state on the skin.

HAVING INADEQUATE HYDRATION CAN ALSO SENSITIZE SKIN AS IT WEAKENS ITS PROTECTIVE BARRIER PROPERTIES. It is paramount to decipher the difference between someone having sensitive skin or sensitized skin because the treatment is different in the long run, however in the short run it is often similar as both conditions require skin to get back to “happy” through soothing, healing, restorative ingredients.

DON’T PUT YOUR SKIN ON A WHEELCHAIR While every sensitive skin profile is different there is a tendency in the industry and even with many dermatologists to suggest to people who have sensitive skin to basically leave the skin alone, to a point of abandonment.

To us this is the equivalent of going into a doctor because you have knee pain, and them suggesting you need to start using a wheelchair.

While there are many ingredients that you want to stay away from, today there are many biotech ingredients that can help sensitive skin gain some ‘muscle’ in a way where it can start defending itself better and improving its condition.

SOME COMMON SENSITIVE SKIN CONDITIONS ECZEMA Atopic dermatitis or eczema affects skin’s ability to defend itself from irritants, even very common ones such as air or chemicals in laundry detergent. ROSACEA It is very common an it is a skin disease that affects the face, it is very common to notice that around the cheekbone area where you can often see some blushing, swelling and broken capillaries. Everyone’s rosacea tends to be flared up by different triggers ranging from a high or low temperature, certain foods, sometimes drinking certain alcoholic beverages, or even in result to stress or other emotional responses. We typically treat clients with Rosacea in a way where they can apply certain skincare products on their sensitive area, usually cheekbones, but still apply different products on the rest of their face, this is because the way we feel about it is that you don’t want to punish your entire face and deprive it of stronger ingredients because your cheekbones are sensitive, and this usually gets us very positive results with them.

YOUR SKIN SENSITIVE OR JUST REACTIVE? Skin that turns pink while you are applying your skincare products or during certain steps during a facial does not always mean it is sensitive or sensitized, some skin profiles may just get very ‘activated’ as we call it where there is more blood vessel activity, but then go back to normal after a few minutes, and that is ok, and does not mean that the person needs to be using a skincare ritual for sensitive or hypersensitive skin.

The concept behind using needles to repair skin is that you create microdamage which triggers skin to heal, and this promotes collagen growth.

This is very similar how if you would scrape your skin, it would heal over and promote new, fresh skin. Needles can do this in a controlled manner all over your skin.

When we talk about number of needles this is because very often the device uses a head, and the head can have a cartridge with a certain amount of needles.

NANONEEDLING is similar however nano needles are much smaller than micro needles, and there are many more of them, which helps to revitalize the texture of skin with very minimal downtime.

A DERMAROLLER is basically the same, but instead of using a device with a cartridge it is a roller which has all the needles on it. WHAT CAN MAKE ACNE WORSE? Also in some cases some lifestyle factors such as diet, exercising with clogged or dirty skin and pollution. The use of certain occlusive ingredients present in many types of makeup and skincare might clog pores and foster bacteria growth.

CLEANSING CAN BE YOUR BEST FRIEND AND WORST ENEMY Over exfoliating and over cleansing can exacerbate acne, as it could irritate and dry skin out, which would make your skin produce more oil. Some harsh acne treatments could also do the same. You want to cleanse daily, morning and night, but you want to use the proper cleanser, toner and moisturizer. You need to avoid ingredients that could dry your skin such as some alcohols, any sulphates and also inflammatory essential oils such as lavender, rosemary, eucalyptus, mint, menthol or anything that is going to be too harsh. Not toning afterwards could throw off your skin’s pH and that might contribute to a worsening of your acne.

We usually like to alternate between gentle cleansers and some stronger ones to get the full renewal effect, without going too far.

SCRUBBING YOUR FACE DOES NOT GET RID OF ACNE

A harsh scrub or exfoliating product irritates skin and might trigger a breakout. We do not recommend “physical exfoliation” which is anything where a granule of any sort physically scrubs your face, unless you have very strong skin, and in those cases we recommend it just every now and then. We also do not usually see good results with using cleansing tools such as brushes or silicone devices which can over stimulate your oil glands and provoke a higher oil production, may affect or worsen the appearance of broken capillaries, those tiny red veins we hate, an even harbor bacteria which is then transferred onto your skin to worsen or spark acne.

There are healthier ways to exfoliate skin, such as including Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) which are derived from sugar cane, where it won’t irritate skin when used properly and it will help with cell turnover to eliminate dead skin cells and also to renew skin that has likely has signs or scars of previous acne.

Makeup and skincare with mineral oil, paraffin, silicones or petrolatum can aggravate acne.

Anything with oil or occlusive ingredients such as mineral oil, petrolatum, paraffin and silicones might clog skin (which are present in a high percentage of skincare and makeup products in the market, even clean skincare.) This also applies to hair products that could seep onto your face, especially along your forehead or the sides of your face if you have longer hair, pay special attention to conditioners with certain silicones.

CHOCOLATE DOES NOT CAUSE BREAKOUTS There have been hundreds of studies done and there is very little evidence that any specific food actually cause acne, not chocolate, not fried foods nor greasy food.

Staying hydrated and eating a healthy diet can improve skin, so we are not saying that a clean diet won’t improve overall skin health, but it is often assumed such foods have a bigger effect on acne. However some studies indicate that spikes in blood sugar could cause acne outbreaks, so lower carbohydrate diets could be better to help control flares. This is because of how a spike in sugar can affect your hormones.

HORMONES, HORMONES, HORMONES… A hormonal imbalance can accelerate oil and sebum production, and this process increases the process of such sebum and bacteria getting trapped in pores and triggering a flare up of acne.

SUN HELPS ACNE Excessive sun exposure can actually harm skin and irritate acne which would lead to more inflammation. This can leave a larger scar and/or dark spots. Sun might make someone tan temporarily blending in some acne scars, however it doesn’t treat acne, and because blemishes are basically tiny wounds, it also means that skin is getting a higher level of trauma (blemish + sun burn damage) which can lead to dark spots and discoloration.

Sun will also increase your risk of skin cancer, and prematurely age skin (deeper wrinkles, saggier skin or loss of elasticity and dark spots.)

HORMONAL ACNE IS NOT LIMITED TO THE CHIN AND LOWER FACE AREA, HOWEVER IT IS MOST COMMON TO SEE HORMONAL ACNE IN THOSE AREAS BECAUSE SKIN TENDS TO HAVE MORE HAIR FOLLICLES AROUND THERE, AND IT MAKES IT EASIER FOR PORES TO GET CLOGGED AND INFECTED WHEN THERE IS A FLARE UP OF OIL PRODUCTION.

FLUCTUATIONS OF HORMONES SUCH AS ESTROGEN, TESTOSTERONE AND PROGESTERONE, which are often seen during puberty, menstruation cycles, pregnancy and menopause. There are many other conditions related to lifestyle, stress or medical affections that can affect hormonal behavior in both men and women. Some hormonal conditions such as some a thyroid imbalance may also lead to dark spots, discoloration and melasma.

STRESS CAN CAUSE THE CORTISOL IN YOUR BODY TO INCREASE, which could also trigger oil production, potentially leading to acne, this is why many people tend to breakout during times of stress.

IF YOU HAVE A SITUATION OR CONDITION that is affecting your hormonal behavior then there is nothing you can topically do that will eliminate that, so this is something you will want to treat or control with the right medical professional. However, what you can do topically is treat skin so that the acne that is being propagated due to a hormonal factor can decrease in terms of getting less blemishes, less inflammation, shorter duration and less scarring and discoloration.

TEN TIPS TO HELP CONTROL ACNE You will want to have a skincare routine that takes your blemish prone skin into account including cleansing and toning morning and night, where you are adding a glycolic cleanser some nights a week, and making sure that you are using ingredients for oily or combination skin to help control sebum production, minimize inflammation as well as to soothe and heal the micro wounds that acne creates.

Moisturizing is a crucial step and requirement if you suffer from blemish prone skin because if your is dehydrated it will dry out, which is different than it being oily. Your skin is very smart, and it will produce more oil and sebum to compensate for this dryness, and this will flare up the blemish problem even more and cause a more active acne.

MAKE SURE THAT YOUR MOISTURIZER OR SPF DOES NOT INCLUDE SILICONES, PARAFFIN, MINERAL OIL OR PETROLATUM, THESE ARE ACTUALLY EXTREMELY COMMON INGREDIENTS EVEN IN ‘CLEAN SKINCARE.’ We have observed there’s a few things we can do, or not do, which could benefit in the reduction of blemishes. It doesn’t mean any of these are absolute in terms of why you might have acne, or a full solution to get rid of it, but these potentially contribute to this.

DON’T TOUCH YOUR FACE Every time you touch your face you are potentially introducing bacteria or cross contaminating your skin with bacteria. So if you are touching your face around a breakout, it is possible you can spread that bacteria to other areas of your face. Nail polish has also been associated with skin allergies and this is because of some of the harsh chemicals involved in it.

Some people can develop contact dermatitis and other types of skin reactions if their nails have polish because it gets transferred as they touch their face. In fact, at our spas, our aestheticians are not allowed to perform a facial with any type of nail polish.

THE UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND DID A STUDY WHERE THEY FOUND OUT THAT PEOPLE TOUCHED THEIR FACE AN AVERAGE OF 23 TIMES PER HOUR!

CALM DOWN Stress can stimulate the production of certain hormones such as Cortisol, which can trigger oil glands and that may lead to acne.

Meditation, exercise and other types of wellness activities may help relieve stress which could benefit this type of acne.

PROPER EXFOLIATION Removal of dead skin cells helps clear pores, and this is best done with alpha hydroxy acids (AHS’s.) With our clients we like to include some type of AHA exfoliation at least a couple of times a week, too much exfoliation could lead to more acne depending on the skin profile so you want to make sure you don’t over do it.

WATER WITH LEMON Although some people may think it is just one of those ‘old wives tales’ we have experience with clients where drinking water with lemon first thing in the morning, sometimes with a little apple cider vinegar and cayenne, helps to work on toxins, which is often where and how some acne may start.

AWARENESS OF DAIRY CONSUMPTION Some studies indicate that a higher consumption of dairy products can sometimes lead to more acne.

This is linked to hormonal alterations caused by the hormones often given to cows, which are passed along into their milk. The androgens triggers sebum production along with other hormones and this all could provoke and flare up acne.

DON’T BE TOO SWEET Sugar in adults are sometimes associated with a type of inflammation that can lead to triggering acne, this is because sugar intake might create glucose spikes which increases insulin production, and in some cases this can provoke higher sebum production.

WATCH OUT FOR SOME FOODS A diet rich in soy could increase estrogen which might stimulate oil glands to produce more oil and sebum, potentially leading to acne. Meat that may have been raised with hormones may also affect hormonal activity. You might counter some of these effects if you take antioxidants and Omega 3’s.

WHAT ABOUT “THE PILL” There is no easy answer about a contraceptive pill. Some pills increase oil production and some don’t. The type of pill that has a high level of progesterone makes the hormones behave a little more like a male’s hormone, which can lead to increased oil and sebum, and therefore potentially acne.

There are some others with higher levels of estrogen which will do the opposite and help reduce acne. Some of the newer generation contraceptive pills do have lower levels of estrogen, so that may also mean that they could have as secondary effect increased acne likelihood. However everyone is different and this should be a conversation to be had with your physician.

DON’T BE DIRTY! Acne involves bacteria and anything you use to touch those areas will carry the bacteria around. If you have acne try to replace your pillowcase for a clean one a few times a week, if you have severe acne and you sleep where your face is touching the pillow, you should replace it every night. The same goes for the towel which you use to dry your face when you cleanse it, you ideally want to keep clean washcloths so you can use them only once.

TAKE YOUR PROBIOTICS Proper digestion, which can sometimes even be affected due to stress, can alter the level of good bacteria which can contribute to how one regulates general inflammation as it improves the gut microbiome. A dermatological report citing an ingredient as magnificent or lackluster does not always automatically translate to what we get to actually observe on our client’s skin.

Part of the protocol we follow when we complete a skin diagnostic on every first-time client is to ask what the person has been using on their skin.

SO WHAT IS THE DEAL WITH SILICONES? Silicone is derived from silica, which is natural.

In fact, some beauty stores include products that contain silicones under their ‘Clean Skincare’ products. We too don’t see a controversial health side effect with the use of silicones.

Silicones are ingredients that acto to leave a very soft, occlusive texture, they don’t soften skin, they make it softer in appearance and touch only while the ingredient is on the skin because it is a truly cosmetic ingredient, such as makeup.

OUR DISLIKE OF SILICONES IS PURELY FOR VAIN REASONS. WE DO NOT LIKE WHAT IT ENDS UP PHYSICALLY DOING TO SKIN, AFTER OBSERVATION ON THOUSANDS OF CLIENTS WHO HAVE USED SILICONES IN THE PAST. Silicones act like plastic, it is almost as if you applied a thin plastic film over your skin.

Back in the day, they were only used in makeup, and if you have ever used a makeup primer then you are familiar with the textural benefits of silicones, a primer is essentially a silicone cocktail. These days silicones are found in a high percentage of products we see including most makeup, sunscreen, eye creams, serums, moisturizers and even some cleansers.

While skin doesn’t breathe per say, it is designed in a way where your pores allow sweat and oil to escape, sometimes in minuscule quantities, but this is still constantly going on. Oil and sebum can accumulate, along with dead skin cells. If you start filling up all these pores with oil and sebum it contributes to them enlarging and resulting in a rough surface which we often refer to as orange peel texture.

SILICONES MAY GIVE YOU A SENSATION OF RICH MOISTURE, BUT THIS IS FAKE HYDRATION.

To the touch you may feel as if your skin is sumptuous, however your skin is not receiving hydration,

IN FACT YOU ARE DRYING IT OUT AS THOSE INGREDIENTS ARE NOT ALLOWING OTHER INGREDIENTS TO ABSORB AS NICELY (SUCH AS HYDRATING INGREDIENTS OR ANY OTHER GOOD INGREDIENT THAT YOUR PRODUCT MAY CONTAIN SUCH AS ITS PEPTIDES, ANTIOXIDANTS OR ANY OTHER ACTIVE.)

IMAGINE APPLYING A SERUM WITH A SILICONE AND THEN APPLYING A MOISTURIZER OVER IT, IN THOSE SITUATIONS YOUR MOISTURIZER WILL DEAD END WITH AN ALMOST PLASTIC BARRIER WHERE IT WON’T BE ABLE TO DO ITS JOB TO BE ABSORBED AND HYDRATE, TREAT AND REPAIR SKIN. Giving up silicones sometimes takes some getting used to, especially for those who are used to an immediate smooth, cosmetic texture. However, the constant use of these ingredients leads to skin that ends up looking damaged and dull, and in order to get elastic, juicy, glowy skin, it is highly recommended to stop using silicones.

IF YOU ARE BLEMISH PRONE You want to think of silicones as creating a happy greenhouse for the bacteria on your skin to grow, so you most definitely want to eliminate them, even if they promise that (very) temporary matte appearance.

You are likely familiar with these ingredients because you will usually apply something that seems like it has a matte finish, and a little later in the day you can go to a mirror and see for yourself every small pore with a tiny head of shiny oil.

HOW TO KNOW IF YOU ARE USING SILICONES.

Look up the products you are using, these days most websites will list the ingredients, you want the full ingredient list not just the key ingredients. A general rule of thumb is to look for ingredients that end in -cone, -conol, -silane, -siloxane and their many combinations.

SOME OF THE MOST COMMON SILICONES ARE DIMETHICONE, CYCLOPENTASILOXANE, DIMETHICONOL, TRIMETHICONE, CYCLOMETHICONE, CYCLOHESILOXANE, ETC.

You may find combinations or versions of those ingredients, but they are still silicones. Something such as Methyl Trimethicone or Cetyl PEG/PPG-10/1 Dimethicone are still silicones because they are a Dimethicone or a Trimethicone. Any inclusion of these ingredients in the formula list means you are indeed using silicones.

Most often ‘Clean Skincare’ will include silicones, so do not think that because you purchased something that fits under ‘Clean Skincare’ that you are not using silicones.

OTHER OCCLUSIVE INGREDIENTES (BEYOND SILICONES)

FAKE HYDRATION, DULL, PARCHED SKIN There is a handful of ingredients commonly used which are able to leave a physical sensation of rich hydration, and can even visually and to the touch create a certain smoothness, however in our vast experience in seeing thousands of people using these ingredients, it leaves behind very dull, dehydrated skin.

I WOULD REFER TO THESE AS OCCLUSIVE INGREDIENTS. The rationale behind them is for them to ’trap’ moisture with an almost plastic barrier ability.

The conflict with this, is that if an ingredient has the ability to act like a plastic barrier, it also has a certain density which doesn’t really penetrate skin, and instead just lingers on the surface.

IF SKIN DOESN’T ‘DRINK’ AN EMOLLIENT, FOR LACK OF A BETTER WORD, IT WILL NOT BE HYDRATED AND IT WILL ULTIMATELY SUFFER.

At our spa part of our skin diagnostic involves asking clients what products they use, because these can often explain skin conditions.

After analyzing the data, from thousands of clients, we discovered that all those who were using the same type of ingredients came to us with the same skin issues.

A RECIPE TO ATTAIN THE OPPOSITE OF GLOW PETROLEUM DERIVATIVES These ingredients are very common in face moisturizers and body lotions because they have a certain textural richness, and when applied, skin will seem to have a nice, deep hydration.

This is very much on the surface as we have all experienced with petrolatum before, otherwise known as vaseline, which is a direct derivative from petroleum, where unless you wash it off it leaves a coating or layer. This does not get absorbed into skin, which is one of the reasons why when people apply vaseline on their lips it acts as protectant layer but the lips don’t get healed, as it doesn’t provide hydration.

Furthermore, when you mix wonderful ingredients such as antioxidants, peptides, or other extracts, with these ingredients, they all of a sudden lose a lot their power because they will not be suspended in an emulsion that your skin is able to better absorb, instead they linger on the surface within a substance, or goo, that your skin is not really using up.

THESE ALL SOUND AS IF THEY WERE TRASH INGREDIENTS, AND IN OUR OPINION THEY ARE, however they are the base for many moisturizers out there, including even some of the most expensive, luxurious, rich moisturizers you can find in the market today. There are many cleansing balms that use mineral oil example as it is a good ingredient to remove makeup, this is because makeup is based with oils, silicones and some of these same occlusive ingredients so when you use something of the same textural properties it actually helps to remove it.

We always tell clients that if they use a makeup remover on their face or eyes to then cleanse the area, because some of these ingredients will remain and leave a layer of a certain coating which may clog skin, and not allow ingredients to then be used up by your skin. For example, if you remove your eye makeup at night with one of these, and then you apply an eye cream or balm, it will likely not be able to be absorbed as nicely and you may even develop millia or those very tiny white dots commonly found under eyes when clogging ingredients are used.

Besides the behavioral properties of these, there are controversial and mixed reviews from different angles in regards to the safety or toxicity of anything that comes from petroleum including potential carcinogenic properties.

The European Union classifies petrolatum, known as vaseline, as a carcinogen and has restricted use in cosmetics. It is also associated to irritation and skin allergies.

ON OUR END, WE DON’T LIKE TO ALARM ANYONE, BUT WE DO THINK THAT IF THEY CAN BE AVOIDED, IT IS BEST FOR POTENTIAL HEALTH REASONS, HOWEVER IN TERMS OF HAVING JUICY, HYDRATED SKIN, IF THE PRODUCTS YOU ARE USING HAVE THESE INGREDIENTS YOU JUST WON’T ATTAIN IT.

IF YOU HAVE BLEMISH PRONE SKIN, YOU NEED TO RUN, NOT WALK, AWAY FROM THESE INGREDIENTS. Not only do they contribute to the clogging of pores, but they also foster bacterial activity, almost creating a happy bubble and environment over your skin to help trap the bacteria which is involved in the life cycle of acne.

Depending on the cause of your acne, these ingredients may or may not be the cause of it, but they certainly contribute to whichever blemish someone gets to last longer, get more swollen, and potentially leave a larger, deeper scar or evidence of its existence.

ARE YOU USING THESE OCCLUSIVE INGREDIENTS? The easiest way is to look at the formula of the products you are using, they will often be listed on websites if you have already thrown out the packaging. Look for these words, or any combination of them.

PETROLATUM, PARAFFIN, MINERAL OIL, MICROCRYSTALLINE WAX One sign that your moisturizer or body lotion may include these ingredients is if your skin feels extremely dry after you wash your face or you shower or bathe, and it only feels hydrated after you apply these products.

While yes, after you cleanse your skin it does need hydration, it shouldn’t have to have a moisturizer immediately if you are using the right emollient ingredients such as shea butter, squalene, and many other botanical extracts and butters which have the ability to work themselves into your skin to hydrate and to carry other repairing, restorative ingredients.

Use ingredients that will increase the cellular activity which will help the pigmented cells get to the surface quicker such as Retinol and glycolic acid.

Use ingredients that will inhibit the melanin production such as Niacinamide, Vitamin C and other targeted ingredients such as Tranexamic Acid.

This is the reason sometimes why if we increment cellular turnover, it can sometimes make dark spots seem darker, as they are coming out, so you may see a temporary darkening of pigmented areas, before it gets better as they must come out.

There are even natural ingredients with very promising clinical studies that rival some of the stronger traditional ingredients such as Bakuchiol, which has been shown to have strong brightening effects, reduce skin discolorations and even out pigmented skin.

Historically dermatologists have used Hydroquinone to target dark spots, which does have power to do so, however it does so with high controversy due to potential toxic correlations but furthermore, we have noticed that many people who used Hydroquinone to clear their dark spots, got them back, and got them back stronger, we always compare this to a yo-yo diet. By the way, this ingredient, widely used in the US and Latin America is banned or very controlled in Europe, Japan and Australia.

CREATING A SKINCARE PLAN TO REDUCE DISCOLORATION, EVEN OUT SKIN TONE AND ATTENUATE DARK SPOTS

IDENTIFY THE CAUSE, OR COMBINATION OF CAUSES OF YOUR DARK SPOTS.

If the reason your dark spots are flaring up is due to a hormonal imbalance or a medical condition, then we usually recommend as a first step to try to get that hormonal imbalance in control, otherwise decreasing dark spots becomes frustrating as new ones keep coming out. Often melasma is a results of a pregnancy, so it may also be a hormonal condition that was temporary.

However there are other conditions, for example stemming from the thyroid, that can also result in dark spots and discoloration.

Acne can certainly cause dark spots in the form of scarring and inflammation, therefore it is a priority to try to control acne, before we focus on dark spots. There are ingredients that can actually help both, such as Retinol which helps reduce the oil gland activity while at the same time boosting cellular renewal for a reduction of spots with the extra bonos of improving skin elasticity.

UV exposure is the most common reason why we see dark spots, therefore this might be the culprit, you will need to consider smarter skin protection, otherwise the merit of your brightening skincare plan will always be overshadowed by the continued skin damage from the sun. Consider that it is not only UV exposure, but also blue light and infrared radiation that contributes in getting dark spots and skin discoloration. Also that UVA rays go through windows, even when you are in your home or office during a Winter day.

There are some natural ingredients that may seem very innocent that could be contributing to your dark spots, and this includes all the citric essential oils, commonly found in a lot of skincare products today such as the oils and extracts of lime, lemon, tangerine and grapefruit.

Inflammation from natural fragrant essential oils could also be part of the equation, so making sure you are not using those will be beneficial (these oils include lavender, eucalyptus, mint, rosemary, ylang ylang, etc.)

U VA / U V B + B LU E L I G H T P R OT E C T I O N + A N T I - P O L LU T I O N Absolutely everything we do to pamper our skin goes out the window, fast, if we are not protecting it correctly. If you think that because you were using SPF you were doing all you could to protect it, per all the latest dermatological research, you are unfortunately wrong. This just means there’s a lot more you can do for your skin on this front. Free radicals in pollution damage skin, as will blue light and infrared radiation. Super antioxidants protect skin beyond SPF ingredients, which only protect skin from the UV rays from the sun. Skin damage from UV, blue light and radiation means dark spots, discoloration, deeper wrinkles, larger pores, saggier skin, broken capillaries and rougher texture. We are already getting skin deterioration from regular everyday life and natural aging, so we don’t want to add more velocity to it.

THE DARK SIDE OF THE SUN SUNLIGHT GIVES OFF ULTRAVIOLET (UV) RADIATION, ALTHOUGH UV RAYS MAY ALSO COME FROM SOME BULBS USED IN TANNING MACHINES AND EVEN OTHER MACHINES SUCH AS NAIL DRYERS, AS WELL AS SOME HALOGEN, FLUORESCENT AND INCANDESCENT LIGHTS.

THERE ARE THREE TYPES OF UV RAYS:

This would be the worst type of radiation, however this one is blocked by the ozone layer.

UVA G I N G

This makes up a about 95% of the UV rays that reach the earth’s surface, this type of radiation goes the deepest into your skin and can contribute the most to skin damage and premature aging which is reflected as dark spots, discoloration, deeper lines and wrinkles, loss of elasticity and even rough texture.

UVA can go through window glass, which is why even during the Winter if you are inside, if there is any light going on, which there is unless you live in a cave, there is UVA radiation on your skin.

UV B U R N I N G

This is known to contribute more towards skin cancer, and it is blocked by window glass. This is the radiation that feels warm on your skin and that makes you burn. Most typically people are more aware of UVB as it is what they are used to ‘feeling’ and also believe that they only need to protect from this.

This is why many people tend to be better about applying sunscreen only when they are going to be outdoors, at the beach, etc.

HOW DO SPF INGREDIENTS WORK THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF SUNSCREEN INGREDIENTS

THE PHYSICAL AND THE CHEMICAL.

If you have ever applied an only physical SPF product you will have noticed that it tends to be a very thick, white, chalky coating, something that you may be okay with on your face when you go surfing, but not something you would wear every day.

This is because these are minerals such as zinc oxide or titanium dioxide and what they do is that they actually physically reflect or deflect the sun’s rays.

On the other hand the chemical ingredients absorb UV radiation before it penetrates into the layers of the skin where you would burn and get skin damage.

These ingredients work on the upper layer of the skin in order to protect it, which is the reason that they must be applied 20-30 minutes before they take full effect.

Chemical ingredients breakdown with the sunlight as they work to absorb the radiation, which is the reason why you must reapply every 2 hours as their efficacy slows down.

If you are sweating or go in the water, then you must dry and reapply more often or right after you get out of the water.

I always tell people to think about a big cast iron pot that comes out of the oven, and if you have ever used these pots you know they will keep food warm for a while, but it does start cool off eventually.

WHAT DOES BROAD SPECTRUM MEAN?

IF YOU ARE INDOORS YOU MAY BE ABLE TO BE LESS DILIGENT ABOUT THIS, BUT YOU DEFINITELY WANT TO REAPPLY IF AND WHEN YOU HEAD OUTDOORS, AND ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE GOING TO BE EXERCISING OR WALKING OUTSIDE.

You probably have noticed some sunscreen products state BROAD SPECTRUM and you want them to say so because that means it protects against more than just UVB.

WE MUST CONSIDER THE WORD “CHEMICAL” AND OF COURSE THE CONNOTATION THAT SUCH CONCEPT CARRIES, especially because we are huge proponents of clean skincare and it almost sounds controversial.

The potential risk of something as serious as skin cancer, especially depending on the type of skin cancer, CARRIES A (MUCH) STRONGER DANGER THAN THE USE OF THESE INGREDIENTS ON YOUR SKIN EVERY DAY. THIS IS MUCH ASIDE, AND BESIDES, ANY OF THE PHYSICAL DAMAGE THAT NOT USING THESE INGREDIENTS CAUSES SKIN. The strongest enemy that skin has, in terms of our vanity or beauty concerns, is sun damage. It causes dark spots, discoloration, deeper lines and wrinkles and loss of elasticity that leads to skin sagging and enlarged pores.

Typically SPF protection is focused on UVB, which is the “Burning” wavelength, and the type of radiation that contributes most to the increased risk of skin cancer, however you also want your sunscreen to have some UVA protection, especially because you likely have a concern to slow down the skin deterioration process due to environmental factors which you can control vs. actual age which we can’t control.

Therefore make sure your sunscreen product states that it is Broad Spectrum on the box, and that means that at the very least the UVA protection is 1/3 of the UVB protection of that sunscreen.

BUT IN THE END IT’S ALL IN HOW MUCH YOU APPLY MOST PEOPLE ONLY APPLY 25% TO 50% OF THE AMOUNT NEEDED, but applying less product doesn’t protect you in proportion, it actually protects you in about the square root of the SPF. We won’t make you pull out your old school scientific calculator, but what this means is that

IF SOMEONE APPLIES HALF OF THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF SPF 30, THEN SUCH PRODUCT WILL TURN INTO ACTUALLY AN SPF OF 5.5!

There is a “Two Finger Method” For the amount of sunscreen that is needed to protect your face and neck, and this is that you need the equivalent of two lines of sunscreen on your index and middle fingers, starting from the base of the fingers which connects to the palm of your hand, all the way to the very tips.

WHAT DOES THE SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor, and if your skin would normally burn after 10 minutes, if you apply SPF 15, it would allow you to stay in the sun without burning for about 150 minutes (factor of 15 times longer.)

This is because of the level of concentration of SPF ingredients which gives it a certain shield the skin.

However that doesn’t really work as simple as we would imagine and you still have to reapply SPF protection every 2 hours if you want it to stay true to its number.

When we went into the development of our sunscreen product we also had to look at how people applied SPF products to come up with the best solution to have people really get the most out of their SPF

We noticed that when people used SPF 50, the product had a tendency to be heavy and thick, and that in lieu of that, people would use less sunscreen, which actually led to lower protection.

A heavy, thicker sunscreen product usually leads to a chalky finish and a clogged pore appearance, which often leads to other skin concerns including blemishes, dullness and even the appearance of lower elasticity.

THESE ARE THE PERCENTAGES OF PROTECTION FROM UV RAYS THAT SOME COMMON SPF INGREDIENTS CAN SHIELD YOUR SKIN. Therefore we actually came up with the conclusion that a sweet spot of SPF 35 was right for us, if you notice, the difference in protection between SPF 30 to 50 is only 1%, so at SPF 35 we are talking about a very tiny difference, with the clear distinction that it can be applied in the right amount for it to act and protect as it is intended.

THE UGLY “C”

WARNING We have covered damaging UV rays coming from the sun, and explained how and why you need SPF protection.

UV radiation can cause DNA damage to skin cells which is what causes skin cancer and this happens in a way where damaged DNA cells start growing out of control.

HOWEVER, THERE ARE ALSO TWO OTHER TYPES OF RADIATION WHICH AFFECT AND DAMAGE SKIN WHICH ARE NOT PROTECTED BY SPF, AND THESE ARE BLUE LIGHT (HEV LIGHT) AND INFRARED RADIATION IR-A.

Sunburn is skin damage and a body’s response to try to repair it. Even getting just pink means you got sunburnt, if skin is darker skin may just feel irritated or itchy, but that is still damage.

IT IS IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER THAT WINTER SUN PUTS YOU AS MUCH AT RISK TO DAMAGING UV RAYS.

Unless your sunscreen product includes the super antioxidant ingredients that also shield from such radiation, you are still susceptible to such damage. Therefore you want to look for a sunscreen product that:

The way to protect your skin from infrared is through what we call super antioxidants, so you want to make sure your SPF protection includes this. When solar energy is absorbed by skin free radicals are created, free radicals age skin (think dark spots, deeper lines or wrinkles and loss of elasticity.) Super antioxidants have the ability to ‘donate’ an electron to the free radical, which stabilizes it without destabilizing itself, therefore shielding from this radiation damage.

Another type of light is called HEV light, otherwise known as blue light. It has been known for a while to damage the retina and increase the risk for eye conditions such as dry eye, cataracts and macular degeneration, however studies have also indicated that it affects skin. You may think you aren’t affected by this, until we tell you that in this fast-paced world full of technology we are all exposed to blue light on a daily basis.

THIS LIGHT IS EMITTED FROM OUR TVS, PHONES, TABLETS, LAPTOPS, FLUORESCENT AND LED LIGHTING.

It also creates free radicals which produce enzymes that break down collagen and elastin. Keep in mind collagen and elastin is pretty much the “Fountain of Youth” and you don’t want this to be damaged any more than it already gets damaged due to our natural aging. Therefore in addition to dark spots and hyperpigmentation this causes skin to sag and lines and wrinkles to get more pronounced, quicker. Protection with super antioxidants is what helps to fight off this oxidative stress.

This is the hidden culprit, we go around our days surrounded by all sorts of lights emitted by all the electronic devices and light bulbs, not realizing this is fast forwarding our skin aging process.

ALL ABOUT EYES THE APPEARANCE OF THE SKIN AROUND OUR EYES HAS THE ABILITY TO IMMEDIATELY MAKE US LOOK RESTED OR EXHAUSTED.

The skin in this area is very thin, therefore it is more easily damaged which results in darkness, lines, and under eye sagging or puffiness.

We have a hollow space in the eye socket area, which further makes this area more susceptible to physically morphing. Keep in mind our eye shape and condition also has a lot to do with our genetics, even the coloring around our eyes.

Nevertheless that doesn’t mean that we cannot do something to keep that area looking more pampered, and helping our general appearance seem more rested and fresh.

Using silicones in this area, we have noticed, ultimately leads to very dehydrated eyes, and ultimately very damaged skin. You do not want to deprive your eyes from true hydration, and in order to do that we recommend you remove all silicones which give a fake, cosmetic hydration.

FURTHERMORE, THE EYE ITSELF IS A DELICATE ORGAN AND THE CONJUNCTIVA IS THE THIN MUCOUS MEMBRANE THAT COVERS NOT JUST THE EYEBALL BUT ALSO LINES THE INSIDE OF OUR EYELIDS. These areas can more easily absorb, and transport substances within your body. If there is an area where you want to be very conscious of trying to adhere to using clean skincare, free of controversial ingredients, it is the eye area.

If your eye cream or balm has ingredients such as: dimethicone, cycllopentasiloxane, dimethiconol, trimethicone, cyclomethicone, and many others ending in -cone, -conol, -silane, -siloxane, then it means you are using silicones.

We try to thicken skin below the eyes, at the same time we try to smooth lines and wrinkles, we can’t forget about brightening and revitalizing the entire region and also helping the under eye area with antiinflammatory ingredients and to drain fluids which cause the much dreaded appearance of puffiness.

Applying an eye balm on the upper lid, if it has the right ingredients for this region, is a vital step.

The upper lid area where you apply a balm or eye serum is only in the region right below your eyebrows where you can feel bone.

The upper lid is often forgotten, and that area contributes to the drooping of the entire brow region, and really we would go as far as saying that this is one of the areas that contribute the most to the framing of one’s face, so this area must also be treated.

Go far out to the sides of your eyes, about two fingers worth. Smile really big and the entire area that gets wrinkled when you do so is the area that needs to be nurtured.

Use your ring finger to dot from the inside upper part of your nose, outwards to the side of your eyes, and along your upper eye lid just below your eyebrows.

NECK LIKE A SWAN, HANDS OF AN ANGEL We are consistently pushing for all of our clients at the Spa to take care of their neck, décolleté and hand area because if we have learned anything is that there usually comes a time where we can repair someone’s face to a good extent, and you can even have medical beauty procedures done.

WHAT WILL ULTIMATELY GIVE AWAY SOMEONE’S AGE (OR HISTORY OF EXPOSURE TO FREE RADICALS) IS THEIR NECK, CHEST AREA AND HANDS.

Clients have come to us and will often tell us that it was perhaps in recent times where they were on a video call and they all of a sudden realized that there was some sagging going on in their neck area. It doesn’t help that we now spend countless hours a week with our heads down, looking at our smartphones, tablets and computers, in a position that further droops the thin, delicate skin on our neck.

THE QUESTION WE GET ON A DAILY BASIS AT THE SPA: HOW TO TREAT THIS AREA?

The first consideration is that you’ll want to apply the right quantity of skincare product, because if you were to measure the area of skin on your neck and décolleté, it’s actually more skin than that of your face. Using your face product, depending on your skin profile, may be correct, however you might run out of your face product very quick which is why we recommend to find specific product for these areas as it usually comes in larger packaging and it skips some of the more expensive actives and peptides that are usually reserved for your face.

We recommend that when you are caring for your neck to include behind your neck or nape area, as the entire area works to support the strucutral shape of your beck and it helps with a lifting effect of the visible part of thyour neck, which is the front.

Go up to your jawline with a gentle massage to help drainage of accumulation of fluid and all the way to behind your ears.

The décolleté area covers to the sides to the clavicle area and down to your breast area, as this area tends to get sun damage which causes dark spots and crepey skin.

Preparing your skin to better assimilate the repairing ingredients is highly suggested, this translates to cleansing and toning.

Cleansing in the shower is easy, and we recognize that if you are washing your face at the sink that it is difficult to also cleanse neck and décolleté, but at the very least you can absolutely tone the area with a cotton round. Consider using a glycolic repairing cleanser a couple of times a week to help speed up the cellular renewal of this area. The treatment step, with something such as a serum is optional, but then you will need hydration morning and night, and SPF protection is vital for your neck, décolleté, hands and arms. This area is as exposed to free radicals as our face is.

ONE LAST TIP is to use your treatment moisturizer not just on hands and lower arms, but to go all the way up and include your elbows and specifically to your tricep area which tends to sag. While yes a lot of this is muscular, having firm elastic skin can give an overall firmer appearance.

WHAT’S THE DEAL WITH THOSE PESKY NOSE BLACKHEADS? The skin on your nose is typically thicker and has more collagen than the rest of your body. This is sometimes further determined by genetics or ethnicity.
