allowed Ground” is a description reserved for Civil War battlefields, where large armies clashed and thousands of soldiers fell, and where great generals once stood—Grant at Shiloh and Lee at Fredericksburg. A sawmill site is not on such a scale, but Roseburg’s at Dillard, Ore. comes pretty close.

Especially when you consider that 25 years ago, Kenneth Ford, who built Roseburg’s wood products Western empire from scratch, had visualized one last sawmill project, a stud mill, and he had invited some pretty acclaimed people to help him put it together. Ford had built and started up a sawmill at Dillard in the mid 1940s.

Kenneth’s cousin Orvis Ford would serve as project manager. Orvis had worked at Roseburg from the 1950s into the early 1980s, sometimes as a plant manager, before “retiring” and continuing to consult with other mill companies, before coming back to Roseburg.

Bud Keeney was brought in for design and engineering. No surprise there.

Keeney had built the old stud mill on site, which was now obsolete. He had worked in sawmilling for various operations since the 1940s.

Fred Fields was called upon to supply the sawmill machinery through his company, Coe Manufacturing. Again, no surprise, as Fields and Coe had worked with Ford and Roseburg for years, especially supplying machinery to Roseburg’s plywood operations.

All of these gentlemen were in the twilight of their careers. Orvis Ford and Keeney were pushing 80; Fields was in his mid 70s. Kenneth Ford was in his late 80s.

Kenneth wanted a high production small log mill that would produce studs as well as longer export metric lumber for Japan. As they turned concept into reality, Kenneth, Orvis and Keeney traveled to several mills, but focused on Stimson Lumber’s mill in Forest Grove, Ore.; that’s because Stimson was running a stud mill with a sharp chain feeding a bandmill, which had started up in the 1980s, designed and engineered by none other than Keeney, who was working for Stimson then.

The Dillard project required lowering some of the floor and moving floor beams around. But before any machinery was put in place, and while remodeling of the building was still going on, Kenneth was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. “He came in one morning and said I’ve got cancer and I’m not going to live very long,” Keeney once recalled. “I was hoping he would live until he got the thing running. He was really into it. But he didn’t make it. When it started up I was disappointed because he wasn’t there.”

Kenneth Ford died in February 1997 at age 88. The mill started up a year later and in another year was averaging in excess of 250MBF per shift and reaching 350MBF—with a Coe and Keeney sharp chain, 6 ft. USNR twin band and Coe chipping heads, Coe optimized gang-edger and another Coe optimized edger, twin USNR horizontal resaw, USNR trimmer and USNR 21 bin sorter and stacker, with Douglas fir logs averaging 8.5 in. diameter.

This writer was fortunate to visit the mill when it hit its stride in early 1999, and talk to the likes of Orvis Ford, Keeney and Fields. But the person most prevalent in the mill wasn’t even there, Kenneth Ford. By the way, Orvis, Keeney and Fields all died basically within weeks of each other during NovemTP ber 2011 to January 2012, all having lived long and full lives.

NEWSFEED CANFOR PLANS ALABAMA SAWMILL Canfor Corp. plans to invest $210 million USD to build a state-of-the-art sawmill at a greenfield site in southern Alabama, reportedly north of Mobile in the community of Axis along Highway 43. The sawmill will have an annual production capacity of 250MMBF on a two-

shift basis and will provide a modern work environment for approximately 130 people who will be employed directly, in addition to sup-porting significant indirect jobs.

In alignment with the company’s sustainability goals and decarbonization targets, the facility design includes investment in a biomass-fueled lumber drying system. Startup of the facility is anticipated in the third quarter of 2024.

“Building on Canfor’s proud operating history in Alabama, we are excited to invest in a new world-class acility that will ensure our long-term ability to operate competitively. In addition, the facility’s versatility and flexibility will enhance our ability to more closely align our production of high-quality products with market demand,” comments Don Kayne, President and CEO, Canfor.

“We greatly value our employees and are committed to providing family-supporting jobs and generating economic activity in the region. We are pleased to be transforming the workplace for our employees by providing a new, modern facility that will continue to operate for generations,” adds Tony Sheffield, President, Canfor Southern Pine.

The new facility will replace the existing operation in Mobile. Following the construction and startup of the new facility, an orderly wind down of the Mobile operation will be undertaken. All current employees will have the opportunity to remain with the company.

The existing Mobile sawmill was operated by Gulf Lumber and the Stimpson family for many years, before Gulf Lumber merged with Scotch Lumber, which subsequently sold to Canfor.

BID Group will deliver the new sawmill, and will manage, design, build, equip, install and provide full startup services.

The new operation will incorporate the full spectrum of BID’s best-in-class wood processing technologies, including equipment, software, automation systems, Artificial Intelligence-enabled optimization and the plant-wide Industry 4.0 solution, OPER8.

COLLINS NAMES INSKO PRESIDENT & CEO Collins announced that Tom Insko will become the President & CEO of the company, succeeding retiring Eric Schooler. Insko, an Oregon native will assume responsibilities on October 1 for the Wilsonville, Ore.-based Collins.

Insko currently serves as President of Eastern Oregon University in La Grande, a position he has held since 2015. He also has extensive background in the wood products industry. He was with Boise Cascade for 20 years, holding positions as plant manager, production manager, senior financing manager, region manager, and area manager. At the 6

Insko’s manufacturing experience spans plywood, composite panels, lumber, and laminated beams. He has also worked extensively in forest policy and management, log and fiber procurement, sales and finance.

He is currently a commissioner on the Oregon Business Development Commis-

sion and previously served two terms on the Oregon Board of Forestry.

“Tom lives by ethics and values that are well aligned with those of our company and family,” states Cherida Collins Smith, Board Chair. “He has a vast amount of experience dealing with the complexities in our business as well as demonstrated success in meeting challenges inherent in our industry and in these times that we were looking for to

succeed the leadership Eric Schooler has undertaken in the last 21 years.”

Insko holds bachelor’s degrees in Mathematics and Business Economics from Eastern Oregon University and an MBA from the College of William & Mary.

Collins operates softwood sawmills in Lakeview, Ore.; Chester, Calif.; and a hardwood sawmill in Kane, Pa.; and a particleboard mill in Klamath Falls, Ore.; and operates substantial timberland holdings.

WESTERN FP EYES MASS TIMBER BIZ Western Forest Products Inc. announced that a wholly owned subsidiary of Western has entered into an agreement to acquire certain assets of Calvert Company, Inc. located in Washington State for US$12 million.

Calvert is one of the oldest glulam manufactures in the U.S. and has more than 60 years of experience producing high quality glulam beams in multiple species, including Douglas fir, southern yellow pine and yellow cedar, for industrial, commercial and residential projects around the world.

Calvert has manufacturing facilities in Washougal, Wash. and Vancouver, Wash. with a combined annual glulam capacity of approximately 35MMBF on a two shift basis. Calvert’s operations employ 60 and produced 13MMBF of glulam in 2021 on a single shift basis.

“We are excited to welcome Calvert’s employees to Western. This acquisition will help position Western to capitalize on the growing North American mass timber building market and is consistent with our strategy of moving up the product value chain and growing our portfolio of value added products,” comments Don Demens, Western President and CEO. “We look forward to working with Calvert’s owner, Doug Calvert, who will be remaining with Western following the closing of the transaction in a consulting capacity. Doug’s strong relationships and expertise in glulam will be invaluable as we look to further grow the business.”

As part of the transaction, Western has created a new engineered wood subsidiary which will remain focused on further growth opportunities throughout the entire mass timber value chain.

Western has a lumber capacity in excess of 1 billion BF from seven sawmills and four remanufacturing facilities. The company sources timber 8

MERCER PURCHASES GERMANY’S HIT Mercer International Inc. has entered into an agreement to acquire all of the outstanding shares of the parent compa-

ny of HIT (Holz Industrie Torgau) for €270 million. HIT owns, among other things, 100% of a timber processing and value-add pallet production facility in Torgau, Germany and a wood processing facility in Dahlen, Germany that produces garden products.

The HIT facility is a modern, high performance, fully integrated wood processing facility and its production capabilities include wood pallets, lum-

ber, biofuels (briquettes and pellets), garden products and bio-electricity.

HIT is the world’s largest producer of EPAL wood pallets used for shipping and, in 2021, sold 295MMBF of wood pallets. Sawmill residuals are used to produce biofuels in the form of wood pellets and briquettes. HIT has the ability to process up to 410MMBF of lumber today, with various potential high return investment opportunities to expand capacity.

The acquisition includes five biomassfueled power plants with the ability to generate up to 15 MW of electricity.

Post-acquisition, Mercer becomes the largest German pallet producer and will have a combined annual lumber capacity of approximately 960MMBF with incremental electricity generation capacity.

The European flat wooden pallet market traditionally focuses on block pallets. The largest share of the European wood pallet market are standard format block pallets, most of which are part of exchange and pooling systems. Within the German market, 80% of wood pallets are exchanged in open pooling systems, while 20% are exchanged in closed pooling systems.

Mercer International Inc. is a global forest products company with operations in Germany, U.S. and Canada with a consolidated annual production capacity of 2.3 million tonnes of pulp, 550MMBF of lumber, and 140 thousand cubic meters of cross-laminated timber.

SLB REPORTS MULTIPLE GAINS Softwood Lumber Board published its 2022 Q1 Report, which recaps key SLB progress points in continuing to break down barriers in positioning wood as an economic, biophilic, and sustainable material, based on credible environmental, social, and governance (ESG) data and reporting. The SLB, in partnership with its funded programs—the American Wood Council (AWC), Think Wood, and WoodWorks—are making a concerted effort to provide education around the use of wood products for their climate benefits, increase timber usage, and capitalize on emerging construction trends.

Key highlights of Q1 include: ● The AWC represented the softwood lumber industry’s interests during the International Code Council Group B Code Development Hearings. The AWC put 10

NEWSFEED forward 18 wood-friendly code change proposals that were recommended for approval. ● Think Wood delivered growth—in some cases exponential—in each of its seven key performance metrics, including 49% year-over-year growth in marketing qualified leads and 490% yearover-year growth in sales qualified leads. ● WoodWorks directly influenced and converted 119 projects, which resulted in

the construction of 23 million square feet of building space and the incremental consumption of 212MMBF of lumber. ● As part of its partnership with the American Institute of Architecture Students, the SLB sponsored a four-day South Quad Conference with AIAS chapters at Auburn University and the Georgia Institute of Technology to position innovative wood products as a sustainable building solution. Participating

students gained firsthand knowledge of mass timber’s performance during a visit to Georgia Tech’s Digital Fabrication Lab. In addition to program successes, the SLB and USDA Forest Service announced winners of the Mass Timber Competition: Building to Net-Zero Carbon, awarding $2 million in funding to six building projects. Projects were selected for their potential to showcase mass timber’s application, commercial viability, replicability, and carbon benefits.

SPI CREATES WILDFIRE MANAGEMENT POST Sierra Pacific Industries has named Matt Pontes as its first Director of Wildfire and Fuels Management.

“We are excited to have Matt’s strategic leadership in this newly created position developed to protect our timberlands, ecosystems and rural communities,” says SPI CEO Mark Emmerson.

Pontes will guide the company’s work in wildfire suppression and resiliency efforts, leveraging his experience in public and private organizations combined with his strong understanding of wildfire and natural resources management.

“I am extraordinarily grateful for the opportunity to join the leadership team, family culture and crew at SPI,” Pontes adds. “This new role aligns with my passion in wildfire, forestry and natural resources. SPI owns and manages more than 2.3 million acres of timberland in California, Oregon and Washington and is one of the largest U.S. lumber manufacturers. The company also produces millwork, windows and renewable energy.

NEWSFEED NEW SAWMILL WILL PROCESS SALVAGE LOGS Tahoe Forest Products (TFP), in a partnership with Washoe Development Corp., an affiliate of Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California, announced they have leased 37.2 acres and plan to build the first major sawmill in the region in decades near Carson City. Salvage logs

have been purchased and a log deck is visible at the site.

Northern Nevada and California were severely impacted by wildfires, which were fueled because forests have not been thinned, cleared or maintained for almost three decades, according to Washoe Tribe. Initially, TFP plans on processing mostly large fire salvage logs removed from the recent Caldor Wildfire, but eventually they plan to also add a small log

line to effectively process thinnings, which hopefully will help to reduce the number of wildfires in the area.

“This project came about because there was no reasonable market for salvage logs and thinnings from the Tahoe Basin or from the Humboldt Toiyabe National Forest,” says Jon Shinn, CEO of TFP. “A local sawmill is one of the critical missing links in beginning to address forest health and resilience, not to mention critical post-fire cleanup efforts from catastrophes like the Caldor Fire.”

About 10 acres of the site will be used for buildings and processing facilities with the rest for log storage. The new plant will include the sawmill building and rough lumber sorter, dry kilns, and a planer mill and sorter to finish lumber for shipping. In total, the buildings will cover 25,000 sq. ft. Annual production is expected to be 50MMBF. Logs will be processed into a wide range of products, including dry-surfaced 2 in. construction lumber, timbers, fence posts and landscape products from wildfire damage, and boards and “factory” lumber for windows from the pine. Additionally, bark will be sold for landscaping and other uses, chips and sawdust will be sold to agricultural end-users and to power plants, while planer shavings will go for animal bedding.

INCOME WAS DOWN, BUT STILL STRONG For the second quarter of 2022, Canfor reported operating income of $531.6 million (Can), down $210.3 million from the operating income of $741.9 million reported for the first quarter of 2022, largely reflecting lower lumber segment earnings following the strong earnings in the previous quarter, offset to a degree by improved pulp and paper segment results.

Canfor President and CEO Don Kayne commented, “Despite the pressures on North American lumber market fundamentals this was a strong quarter for our lumber business, as our results continue to far exceed pre-pandemic levels and we continue to capitalize on our global diversification strategy. In our North American operations, ongoing global supply chain constraints resulted in the difficult decision to reduce operating schedules at our Western Canadian sawmills during the second quarter and into the summer months.

NEWSFEED creased $230.9 million quarter-over-quarter principally reflecting a significant downward correction in Western spruce/pine/fir (SPF) and southern yellow pine (SYP) US-dollar benchmark pricing in the period, with the average North American Random Lengths Western SPF 2x4 2&Btr price down US$408 per MBF, or 32%, and the average SYP East 2x6 #2 down US$546 per MBF, or 50%.

experienced downward pressure principally driven by the impact of elevated interest rates and rising inflation. These economic headwinds weighed on lumber market demand in the current period, prompting a modest decline in new home construction activity in the U.S., particularly for single-family units. Decreased demand combined with relatively steady inventory levels in the supply chain resulted in a significant drop in

lumber prices.

Looking ahead, global lumber market fundamentals are anticipated to be relatively solid through the third quarter of 2022. New home construction activity in North America is projected to weaken in the wake of high mortgage rates and decreasing housing affordability, particularly for first-time homebuyers, while activity in the repair and remodeling sector is estimated to be steady. Offshore lumber demand in Asia is anticipated to face continued downward pressure in the third quarter as high inventory levels in the region continue to exceed consumption.

Results in the third quarter are anticipated to reflect the continuation of reduced operating schedules across the company’s Western Canadian sawmills.

WEYCO PLEASED WITH RESULTS Weyerhaeuser reported second quarter net earnings of $788 million on net sales of $3 billion, compared to net earnings of $1 billion on net sales of $3.1 billion for the same period last year and net earnings of $771 million for the first quarter of 2022.

“In the second quarter our teams delivered strong results across each of our businesses,” comments Devin Stockfish, president and CEO. “Looking forward, we remain constructive on long-term demand fundamentals that support our businesses, notwithstanding the recent macroeconomic headwinds. Our financial position is exceptionally strong, and we remain committed to delivering operational excellence across our unmatched portfolio of assets.”

With regard to the timberland business, In the West, fee harvest volumes were moderately lower than the first quarter due to unseasonably wet weather.

Domestic sales realizations were moderately lower and per unit log and haul costs were significantly higher as harvesting operations transitioned to higher elevation units. Export sales realizations were moderately higher and export sales volumes were significantly higher, driven by strong demand in Japan. Sales realizations for lumber decreased 25%. Sales volumes for lumber were significantly higher due to seasonal inventory drawdown and improved production, while unit manufacturing costs and log costs were slightly higher.

IDAHO PROJECT PLANTS SEEDLINGS Converting an all-but-dead timberland at risk of significant wildfire into a strong future forest is a massive undertaking, but the Idaho Dept. of Lands (IDL) is one step closer to achieving that in the Packer John State Forest. This spring 610,300 seedlings were planted over nearly 2,000 acres. Now those baby trees are growing thanks to a nearly $300,000 grant from the Arbor Day Foundation.

A major Douglas fir tussock moth infestation peaked in Packer John in 2019 and was the final blow to the forest’s health after several years of drought and previous insect damage. This was also devastating for Idaho public schools, as these schools are the owners/beneficiaries of the land and the funding grown out of timber. The forest was made up mainly of Douglas fir, subalpine fir, and grand fir, which are susceptible to tussock moth damage.

With that in mind, the IDL was quick to sell the damaged timber for wood products in what are called salvage sales.

That made it possible to get as much value out of the trees as possible, as well as remove the significant wildfire risk.

All trees within the salvage sale areas were harvested except for ponderosa pine and spruce trees, which are not preferred by tussock moth. Those species make up a small percentage of trees within the harvest areas, leaving a mostly blank canvas for a new forest. The new trees will be more ponderosa pine and western larch.

“What we are doing is very unique because the vulnerable trees are gone and will be replaced,” says Tyler Nelson, Idaho Dept. of Lands Forest Management Program Manager. “It will take time for these trees to grow, but as they do, they will hold strong against the insects and disease which are natural to these areas, but don’t feed off of the new trees.”

A grant from the Arbor Day Foundation totaling $296,600 covered the cost of the more than 600,000 trees. IDL was selected for the grant because of the unique nature of the project, which is to ensure that land impacted by the tussock moth outbreak can be restored to a healthy and functional forest by essentially starting over with tree species better adapted to the site.

NEWSFEED ARSONIST ACT DESTROYS MACHINE Authorities are still investigating an environmentally damaging and potentially disastrous fire in early August after a protester allegedly tossed a road flare under an excavator near an area in Humboldt County in northern California that has been the focal point of anti-logging demonstrations and protests.

A roadbuilding contractor working on an easement road across state land to a private tract scheduled for harvest by Humboldt Redwood Co. had an excavator destroyed by the flare incident. No one witnessed the act, but just prior to the fire individual protesters were spotted in the area, which had seen several protests and demonstrations over the years.

The fire also resulted in the release of 80 gallons of diesel onto the site that now has to be remediated, not to mention the luck that responders were nearby and able to ensure the blaze didn’t spread into the surrounding forest. No group has taken responsibility for the act, and CalFire officials are treating it as an arson investigation.

The TRP calls for traditional ground-based logging systems for about twothirds of the work. The TRP is expected to generate $2.28 million in revenue after subtracting costs of logging, hauling and roadwork, which will help fund the restoration treatments, according to FS officials.

FS OFFICIALS OKAY TWISP Forest health operations should begin next year following final approval in late July of the Twisp Restoration Project (TRP) on the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest in north central Washington. The project seeks to improve forest health and wildfire resistance across 24,000 acres, focusing on the wildlandurban interface and ensuring a network of safe and efficient roads for travel and evacuation.

The TRP includes treatments on 550 acres of private land and 40 acres of U.S. Bureau of Land Management lands. The project size was reduced by more than half after fire activity during the planning stages.

Project scope includes harvest of 5054MMBF across 8,100 acres, roughly 75% Douglas fir, followed by ponderosa pine. In addition, PCT operations on almost 14,000 acres will target stems under 10 in., leaving 50-75 trees per acre. Another 6,000 acres will receive brushclearing and mastication operations to reduce fuel loads.

Today, the dual-line design and much of Roseburg’s Dillard Lumber mill flow remains, but the level of technology and overall capacity surrounding and supporting the mill are light years ahead of Mr. Ford’s time. With the facility now capable of breaking 500MMBF in annual production of 8-, 9- and 10-ft. studs among the unprecedented challenges of a pandemic that helped create the highest lumber prices ever, Mr. Ford would no doubt be impressed with what his legacy has wrought.

Since Timber Processing last visited in 2005 after the major upgrade, Roseburg has pursued a compelling strategy of maintaining sawing technology and system upgrades along with investments in technology that empowers team members and helps build a stronger teamwork culture.

“We used to hire ‘sawmill people,’” says Dillard Lumber Operations Manager Marshall Ledbetter. “Now, we hire leaders and train them to do the job and give them what they need to do it.”

Some of the mill’s most recent equipment and system upgrades include: ● The #2 board edger received an optimization upgrade in 2021, with a new Goldeneye scanning and optimization package from MiCrotec.

The edger’s older system was running on a PC and on its last leg with frequent reboots and no backup. The new Goldeneye provides a much denser scanning field and better productivity, Ledbetter says, noting better overall recovery and less waste on sideboard processing.

“We also have a lot more support, and after we tweaked a few things it’s running great.” ● In 2014-2015 several key investments were made, the first in July 2014 by adding a new USNR sawmill stacker that utilizes the MillTrak camera control system to monitor backlog and overall lumber flow. The system can lay up to 19 courses/minute while automating stick placement and replaced an older stacker that was running full speed just to keep up. ● In 2019 the mill added its third American Wood Dryers (AWD) 84 ft. double-track kiln, this one with the Thermo-Vent feature that reduces moisture and also gets the kiln up to temp quicker and helps hold it there, Ledbetter says.

Roseburg also took the opportunity to make several key upgrades to its overall drying capacity, which includes eight older concrete USNR kilns and three AWD double track aluminum kilns.

crease air flow, as well as new crossshaft fans that improve air circulation among lumber charges. Also in 2019, the mill added the SDS wireless Kiln Scout moisture content detection system, integrated across all three AWD kilns.

Altogether, the improvements have significantly lowered steam requirements and costs while reducing drying times by almost half. “We’re now drying more with less,” says Steve Walker, dry end area coordinator.

Separating heartwood from sapwood in the sawmill also boosts drying operations, with the aid of Atlas Density Graders, with weigh bridges installed just upstream of the sorter infeed. Medium and light moisture content boards are routed to the newer AWD kilns.

The moisture sort at the sawmill is a key part of reducing drying times and getting the right wood to the most efficient kilns, Walker says. “In addition to reducing drying time the sort helps us tighten up deviation and also improve overall drying quality.”

build a stronger culture that team members want to join.

“It’s all about making our people better,” Ledbetter says. “It’s getting harder to find team members, so we need to empower them all we can.”

In July 2021, the mill implemented a new preventive maintenance system where operators can put in work requests, get feedback, make sure PMs are getting done and a whole lot more.

“If you weren’t an iPhone user before, you are now,” says Mike Lawless, green end area coordinator, adding that “We’re also using it to help build the culture as well, empower people to raise concerns, and team members are also getting communications and can see how millwrights and maintenance personnel are responding. It helps keep the culture positive.”

In mid 2020, the mill had begun using iPads to implement its CMMS; by July 2021 all maintenance personnel were using iPads and were trained in a structured program to take time daily to respond to and validate requests and approvals for work, and if not report why.

The old paper-based maintenance system was prone to having issues slip, Lawless remembers. “But now things aren’t falling through the cracks, and if a request is rejected, (the operator) knows when and why.”

The mill also added an operator metrics dashboard module that provides real time data and performance information for each machine, one for each operator who was logged in and running it. The report shows production as well as any downtime and why. “Our team members want to know what it takes to win, and what a good day looks like— and you can’t over-communicate that,” Ledbetter says.

The system also develops a report card for each team member at the end of each 26

week that shows the production and downtime data and overall performance of any machine a given team member may have logged in to. It helps in training, tracking downtime and boosting team member performance, Lawless says. “People want to know where they stand at the end of the day, and everyone can see what we’re measuring.”

Mill technical personnel are also using the system as a diagnostic tool: One example is monitoring motor amperages to head off any problems before they be-

come failures, such as identifying motors that are pulling incorrect amperages but still running. It’s taking a while to set it up since amperages vary so widely, but the idea is to greatly reduce emergency repairs while becoming more preventive overall. Another example is monitoring bearing vibration and temperatures at the bandmills, looking to spot issues before they become failures as part of an inhouse developed saw deviation monitoring system that was implemented eight years ago.

Ledbetter says continually building and occasionally rebuilding teams is a sign of the times now, compared to the traditional seniority-based system that rewarded time spent and also provided ready replacements. Those “sawmill people” are harder to find, and developing leaders is a priority. “Now we are looking for leaders who can be servants and support the people who drive the mill,” he adds.

mill, says Walker. A woman whose background is in education and working with at-risk kids is a relatively new team member and totally new to the sawmill business with limited industry knowledge, “But she’s running one of the best crews we have right now,” he says.

There’s always been talk of reducing headcount, but now, “At the end of the day it’s about sustaining what we have: Headcount can drop faster than you can upgrade the team so we have to have a good, solid culture that people want to be part of,” Walker says.

MILL FLOW The Dillard Lumber division cuts all Douglas fir, and specs a log down to 5 in. small end and up to 22 in. large side.

The log yard holds up to 20MMBF if needed. A Wagner L90 log handler and Caterpillar 988 wheel loader unload trucks and feed two debarkers.

The Nicholson A7 and A8 debarkers feed to three merchandising decks; two feed the end-dogger and one feeds the sharp chain. Bucked logs can also be routed to a block holding yard for use at the plywood mill or as sawmill log storage.

Logs entering the sharp chain are tamped on and fed through a set of chip heads (Iggesund) and USNR twin band.

Cants flow to an 8 in. USNR curve-sawing gang and sideboards go to a Lico board edger. Multiples are routed to a USNR horizontal resaw that takes material from both lines.

Logs processed on the end-dogger line are fed to a USNR quad band, with cants going to a USNR vertical shape sawing gang and sideboards going to the USNR edger with recent Goldeneye optimization upgrade. Multiples are routed to the resaw.

Both the sharp chain and end-dogger lines have their respective trimmers and sorter-stacker systems. The two sorters are 25 and 28 bins, respectively, and run a combined 300 lugs/minute (130 and 170). The #1 line features the new camera-controlled USNR stacker and also handles 1 in. and 4 in. material if needed.

Transfers allow the flow to be swapped if one of the stackers goes down.

Lumber drying is accomplished with the three newer AWD aluminum kilns and the older yet refurbished USNR kilns. Two of the AWD kilns run with AWD Drystar controls; one runs R&L Engineering kiln controls. The block kilns run with USNR Kiln Boss controls.

The mill is in the process of adding double tracks to the older block kilns to increase throughput and reduce lumber handling requirements.

The two-line planer mill features two Stetson-Ross planers feeding their respective sorters and stackers, though the #1 planer line gets most of the wood. “This allows us the ability to run different products on the same shift, and also four-inch material if needed,” Walker says.

Our cover story in the May issue was the renovation of the former Anderson-Tully hardwood sawmill at Vicksburg, Miss. into a high production southern yellow pine sawmill by Vicksburg Forest Products. It was no small task to say the least. And the ownership entity, Claw Forestry, about the same time that the Vicksburg mill started hitting its stride, announced it is building a greenfield SYP mill in Gloster, Miss., and followed up that announcement with another one where its Southeastern Timber Products operation in Ackerman, Miss. is teaming with Tolko Industries on a major investment and production expansion of the Ackerman sawmill.

We’re not sure those projects will be as great a challenge and accomplishment as the Vicksburg conversion was, which is why we feel the Vicksburg mill deserves a second look, with some photos not published with the original article in the May issue.

ollowing a pandemic-induced cancellation in 2020, the biennial Timber Processing & Energy Expo returns September 28-30 to the Portland Exposition Center in Portland, Ore. Hatton-Brown Expositions, an affiliate of Timber Processing magazine, has hosted the event since 2010.

“It’s hard to believe it has been four years since TP&EE was held, and what a strange trip it has been,” comments Rich Donnell, TP&EE Show Director and Editor-in-Chief of Timber Processing. “The important thing is that we’re

back face-to-face. ‘Virtual’ is okay, but it’s not like being there.”

About 170 equipment and technology exhibitors will be located in Hall E at the Expo Center. The event caters primarily to the primary lumber manufacturing industry, but also has a significant engineered wood products and primary panel manufacturing participation.

“We’re seeing some new and enhanced technologies from the exhibitors according to their promotions,” Donnell comments. “I think the timing is right for the mills to be placing orders. They’ve been running hard for the past two years, since not long after the pandemic, as lumber and panel prices set historical records and housing starts shot up. Prices and the housing markets have calmed down some, and this is a good time for the mills to replenish their machinery. They have the capital resources to do so. And there’s also a new wave of data and optimization

intelligence technology that has come on, and it’s a good time to implement or update those in the mill operations.”

Timber Processing conducted a capital expenditure survey in the spring that showed more than half of the softwood lumber companies responding to the survey plan to spend at least $1 million in 2022-2023 at each of their mills, including 6% planning to spend more than $20 million and 15% spending $10-20 million. The survey asked lumbermen to select which equipment they’re buying and lumber handling forklifts, dry kilns, sorters, stackers, log scanning/optimization, downstream sawing, fire prevention,

downstream scanning/optimization, log merchandising, and filing room equipment all scored high, along with expenditure for maintenance-related items.

The survey also revealed that 14% of the responding companies plan to build a new sawmill in the near future, and 14% are giving it consideration.

“Those are impressive numbers that should impact the activity at the Portland show,” Donnell says.

PERSON OF THE YEAR During the first afternoon at 3 p.m., Wednesday, September 28, Timber Processing will host its Person of the Year ceremony, and present the magazine’s 34th annual Person of the Year plaque to Eric Schooler, CEO of Collins and longtime Northwest lumberman who worked many years at Hampton Lumber and Collins.

MiCROTEC SMART Link: Gapless Traceability from Log to Board, and Back Again —Norvin Laudon, Director, Vancouver, MiCROTEC Historically, each machine center in the sawmill has been more or less isolated from the next. Each piece of equipment, such as the primary breakdown, sawmill trimmer, or planer mill scanner, has operated independently from each other, without any knowledge of the intended decisions made at the equipment upstream or downstream.

Recent developments in log and lumber scanners, such as CT Log scanning, allow creation of digital fingerprints for each board sawn. This mean for every single board in the sawmill its complete history can be traced back into its parent log. This information provides incredible oversight to the sawmilling process and answers questions that in the past have only been dreamed of: Was the board dried in the kiln correctly? How accurately was the primary breakdown executed? How much did the parent log cost and who sold it to the mill?

Scanners connected in such a way provide value that is much more than the sum of their individual parts. They are analyzing the entire sawmilling process as a unit, as opposed to a connection of isolated processes.

AMERICAN WOOD DRYERS American Wood Dryers, LLC designs, builds and installs high efficiency, high quality dry kilns with installations throughout the world. Continuous kilns are typically a combination of aluminum construction in the cold sections and steel in the hot section for economy of material costs. The Continuous Dry Kiln (CDK) design has become especially prevalent in the southern yellow pine industry. This design provides increased throughput and higher efficiency by taking advantage of both the stored heat in the lumber and the chamber humidity to preheat the entering lumber while conditioning the exiting product.

BRUNNER-HILDEBRAND The HCK continuous kiln dryer is Brunner-Hildebrand’s answer to the increasing demand for continuous kiln drying technology. The HCK operates in unidirectional mode with lumber package motion through the kiln in longitudinal orientation. This comes as a big advantage in terms of mill workflow with a clear distinction between wet side and dry side. Forklift transport is reduced to a minimum.

With Brunner-Hildebrand’s game-changing GreenKilns technology, the individual drying zones of the HCK cooperate in a thermal compound system. Excess heat from one drying zone will be extracted and guided to another drying zone which is in actual demand of additional heat. This way, up to 25% of thermal consumption may be saved and reused for lumber drying in an ecofriendly way.

As an integral part of the kiln carts, Brunner-Hildebrand installs their revolutionary HWPT (Hildebrand Weight Precision Technology) system. With these wireless weight measuring bars, customers are capable of measuring the weight of the entire lumber stack resting on top of the kiln cart and record the weight and moisture loss over time. The benefit is a much tighter mc control with hundreds of boards or more determining the current average mc.

GREG F SMITH The Gmachine top head reman chipping machine is helping many mills increase production with the linear feed, top head reducer. Currently being installed in mills with conventional headrig carriages that don’t have the benefit of an installed chip head at the primary breakdown, this machine allows operators to make their first pass using a slab+ board approach effectively saving one line on each side of the log that is opened on the primary breakdown machine.

Cutting only 500 logs per day and opening the log on only two sides could potentially increase the number of lines saved by 1000 lines per day. This time-savings equates to a substantial production increase with no loss of recovery.

In addition, the machine can act as a “reman” machine for off thickness lumber either located directly behind the edger to correct thickness issues created by upstream sawing centers, or to reprocess lumber rejected by the trimmer due to thickness variations outside of normal acGmachine top head reducer/reman chipping machine ceptable limits.

With a small footprint and simple infeed and outfeed requirements, the machine can generally be installed in the existing production flow with minimal modifications to the mill floor and existing equipment at a substantially lower cost than other modifications such as a horizontal resaw to accomplish these tasks.

The machine utilizes an electric linear actuator instead of a conventional hydraulic linear positioner to further simplify installation requirements as no hydraulic power unit is needed.

The multi segment chip head uses reversible knives for long life between knife changes.

Controls generally consist of a simple operator panel containing start/stop and set selection functions tied to a PLC capable of interface to the electric linear positioning actuator. Manual feed, optimized and automated options are available.

In most applications, return on investments of less than 18 months are common with some users reporting a year or less. A Gmachine in your mill will increase productivity and profits.

HALCO’s LogProfitability system helps you to become a better log buyer. The system combines log bucking simulation with a SAWSIM model of mill processing.

For delivered log purchases, LogProfitability can determine the profitability of individual log vendors or log sales, and also determines the relative profitability of different log diameter/length/quality classes. LogProfitability is not simply a return-to-log calculator; it recognizes that individual log purchases are typically not run through the mill on their own, but instead are processed as part of the overall log supply mix.

Evaluating the relative attractiveness of alternative log supply sources is a complex problem, as changes in the log supply will impact: —Production rate —Production mix —Recovery (overrun) For those in the Pacific Northwest, the problem is further complicated by Scribner. Gaining a better understanding of the implications of alternative log diameter/lengths (and tapers) on overrun can have a very significant impact on mill profitability.

LogProfitability allows a mill to determine the recovery (or overrun), production rate, product mix, revenue yield, and hence log break-even value and profitability as a function of: —Log supplier, or log supplier and sale —Species —Log diameter/length class Finally, in addition to analysis of individual log sources or classifications, LogProfitability can be used to evaluate the entire log mix processed in a period (typically a month). This analysis can be invaluable to understand the extent to which changes in mill operating metrics were due to changes in the mill’s diet. This understanding can help to identify mill operations problems that need attention, but just as importantly may help to identify situations in which operating metric changes (e.g. overrun) were primarily the result of a change in log supply, thus saving valuable time searching for a “culprit” in the mill operations.

LogProfitability runs require a single user operation to select the log sources to be processed in the run, after which the analysis for all sources is completed in a single system run. The efficiency of the process frees up the user’s time to be spent analyzing run results, rather than making the runs.

The sawmill Rettenmeier in Wilburgstetten, Germany has been operating a new profiling line since 2021 that features the latest innovations from LINCK. For log rotation, the new Log Motion Control ensures an exact correction of the log position. To achieve a high value recovery in the sawmill, accurate log rotation before the first processing step is decisive. With its optimization software, LINCK uses 3D scanning to generate a value-optimized cutting pattern and then determines the required angle for log rotation.

With Log Motion Control, LINCK presents a further step in the development of this technology. In addition to determining the log rotation angle, a Microtec Truespin scanner is used where a camera records a characteristic pattern on the log surface and where the log position is transmitted to the LINCK Log Motion LINCK ultimate positioning and profiling Control during the whole rotating process. The software determines the true log rotating position to be compared with the theoretical one. Any deviations will be compensated by immediately adjusting the position of the rotating rollers.

The log rotation process is therefore under the full control of the LINCK Log Motion Control software.

In addition to the high-end machine VPM450, the smaller VPM350 was developed to be used for cant heights of up to 350 mm and cutting depths of up to 75 mm.

The First Nations owned Meadow Lake Tribal Council Bioenergy Centre has started their ambitious project of generating carbon-neutral green power by building a 6.6 MW power generation system that is fueled primarily by sawmill biomass residuals. This for Saskatchewan Canada first-of-its-kind green energy biomass project will combine environmental improvement with thermal efficiency, while improving the economic outcome for this nine-member First Nations council. And for this, finding the right partners was key. So we are proud to have been chosen as their continuous dry kiln supplier.

We are providing MLTC Bioenergy Centre with a Mühlböck 6-zone Progressive Flow 1306 PRO. This continuous kiln has the capacity to deliver about 85MMBF per year, 24/7, to the highest quality possible, while Mühlböck’s unique 1306 Heat Recovery system ensures considerable reduction of thermal energy consumption.

The Progressive Flow combines the advantages of the progressive kiln and a batch kiln. Although Mühlböck has been scoring globally for several years with its progressive kilns and its various heat recovery systems, they still saw further potential in making the progressive kiln even more flexible than before.

Mühlböck explains the origin of this idea: “Many of our customers have noted in the past that with the stacking of the sawn timber into a dry kiln, the continuous Mühlböck plays its part for a zero-waste future. process in the woodworking from the log wood task to the corresponding further processing is interrupted. With this system we have now combined the flexibility of a batch kiln with the continuous feeding system of a progressive kiln. “ To ensure a seamless fit of our fully automatic transport system within the Progressive kiln with the existing kiln cart system currently in operation at this sawmill, Mühlböck’s in-house engineers are working closely together with MLTC Bioenergy Centre.

Commissioning work and last assembly will be finished at the end of August and we look forward to when the installation of this continuous kiln will start and our part in this zero-waste sawmill will come to fruition.

For example Planetworks Consulting Corp. engineer Colin Savage chose the CCO2 as the video monitoring solution for the $800 million SeymourCapilano Twin T, a two 3.8 m wide, 7.1 kilometer long tunnel project bored under Grouse and Fromme mountains for water infrastructure enhancement.

Savage said: “I would challenge others to find a harsher environment than a tunnel boring machine. We used cameras at multiple locations along the TBM to view progress and as indicators for material conveyance.”

These cameras were mounted beside conveyor belts which had hard rock tunneling waste transported at high speed past the camera. It was not uncommon for small and medium sized rocks to hit these cameras on the lens and body. They stood up to this punishment 24-7—and the only thing replaced occasionally was the protective glass on the camera enclosure.

OPTIMIL Optimil’s canter-profiler log breakdown system has a feed section that consists of a heavy duty auto rotation conveyor, a log turner and a skewing-slewing-tilting infeed. Our extended (DLI) length infeed precisely positions the log to achieve maximum yield, as calculated by our optimization software.

Logs are fed through the infeed system on a pneumatically tensioned, high-speed roller chain and work in conjunction with the coupled overhead hold-down rolls to maintain control of all log sizes and to ensure accurate log transport. In order to pre-position spiked rolls and control the log as it enters the bottom head chipping assembly or sharp chain system, linear positioners are seamlessly incorporated along the line.

The two-sided canter systems, typically used in conjunction with secondary horizontal curve-sawing systems, use conical side heads to produce two-sided cants in which logs Optimil log breakdown line feed through on a sharp chain. These conical disc chipping heads are positioned on the log 30 degrees sideways, incorporating low friction linear bearings to produce high quality chips and achieve optimum accuracy. Our patented non-rotating anvil provides superior log guiding and minimum deviation throughout the chipping section.

Our four-sided canter utilizes drum type heads and a mini spline guiding to offer feed rates of 750 FPM while maintaining chip quality. Low friction linear bearings are used to achieve fast accurate sets on the cutting tool and longer wear life. The new four-sided canters have been developed to promote dust and chip containment. We have added more feed rolls to ensure better control through the entire system and all chip heads and feed roll are driven by U joint drive shafts and operated through remote Rex gear boxes.

Side board profilers can be added to both two- and four-sided canters to help eliminate the load at the board edger system. These heads are positioned by the optimized solution sent by the scanner located in the extended length (DLI) system. The heads are fully adjustable to machine the desired board on either or both sides on the center cant. The side board solution can be skewed up or down the side of the cant.

The new Balance Cut saw box features a unique method of setting the saws to balance the depth of the cut on cants being processed, which in turn allows for an increased output. The Optimil system connects the upper and lower saws and shifts both vertically at the same time. The re-positioning of the saw guides decreases the feed roll center, enabling better control of the cants as they are processed.

VALON KONE Valon Kone (VK) is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of rotor debarkers along with butt reducing equipment and self centering infeeds used together with debarkers. Valon Kone offers solutions for all industrial debarking regardless of wood type, and has addressed the problem of increased size and weight of debarkers by developing a new type of debarker frame.

The initial idea was to “break down” the machine frame into pieces to facilitate log handling, enabling customers to modify debarkers flexibly as their needs changed. By continuing the machine frame with an additional frame piece, it is easy to add to the machine; for example, a second debarking rotor or a butt-end reducing rotor. As a result of this design development Valon Kone has introduced two completely new types of modular machine frames—the VK5000 and the VK8000.

Valon Kone manufactures feedroll modules equipped either with two or four feedrolls. LIMAB Enhances Downstream Scanning

Cleereman Edger Hits The Mark

LIMAB was founded 40 years ago and has a long tradition of developing and manufacturing laser-based technology. Headquarters and manufacturing plant is located in LIMAB BoardProfiler Gothenburg, Sweden. LIMAB has regional offices in the USA, UK and Germany as well as approved distributors and partners in other regions.

LIMAB supplies 2D ProfiCura and 1D PreciCura laser sensors and complete systems for dimensional and profile measurement in sawmills, panel production and steel mills.

BoardProfiler is the system for the wood industry that was developed more than 30 years ago, and it has to date been sold to more than 250 customers.

LIMAB calls its latest version of the system BoardProfiler 3D, which is available in four versions. “The great thing about our system is that the software is almost identical for all versions, which has proved interesting for several customers as they have invested in both edger and trimmer in their lines,” the company states. All versions are also available for transverse and longitudinal processes: block control (optimization for chipper or rip saw), edger, trimmer, classifer (sorter, dimensional control).

LIMAB BoardProfiler Block Control system builds on the LIMAB edger which has been a success since the first system was sold about 10 years ago.

The system is easy to install, takes up little space in the process, is easy to integrate with sawmill automation systems and has a simple and easy-to-understand software. The sensors used in Block Control and edger are normally LIMAB’s 2D sensor, ProfiCura 600, 700 or 800. Each sensor has a high resolution of 640 measuring points across the line. The number in the series indicates the length on the laser line that measures the block or board.

Block Controls functions include: rip saw (up to eight sawblades), positioning for chipper, dimensional positioning of block, dimensional control of block.

Cleereman Industries/Cleereman Controls, which introduced their edger line in the spring of 2021, reports the installation of seven edgers and has sold more than 30. Cleereman edger was Jay Glime of introduced in 2021.

G&G Lumber in Florence Wis. and Jon Ritcher of Shamco Lumber in Iron River Mich. both replaced existing manual edgers with Cleereman optimized edgers. Both of these mills average more than 40MBF feet per day with Cleereman optimized carriage lines.

They chose Cleereman for the edger because Cleereman is not only close by, but provides great customer service after the sale. Both G&G Lumber and Shamco Lumber are reporting huge increase in yield with Cleereman’s new optimized edger and say the machine will pay for itself in yield savings alone. According to both operations, you can stand by the chipper and just watch how much less waste is going into it since installing the optimized edger.

Cleereman displayed its 3-saw optimized edger completely set up with infeed and outfeed at the Richmond Expo this past May. The reception on the new edger has been incredible with more than 30 sold in just 15 months, according to Cleereman Vice President Paul Cleereman.

“We offer the board edger line in both two and three saw models with or without combination gang side option.

Our edgers can be manual with setworks or fully optimized. All our edgers come with Cleereman Controls.

This is different than some of the other manufactures that use a different controls company to control and optimize their edger lines. Our customers can call one place for trouble shooting or parts and service for their edger.”

Cleereman Controls has sold more than 167 different systems since coming to market in 2019. Cleereman Controls offers optimized carriage and edger lines along with debarker, trimmer, and stave controls.

Cleereman says its carriage and edger optimized lines are seeing 8%-10% gains in yield versus non-optimized lines.

Roseburg Focuses On Real Estate Growth As Roseburg continues to expand its vertically integrated land and manufacturing business model across North America, the company has taken steps to deepen its bench strength in strategic land acquisition and management.

Roseburg has selected Phil Adams to lead this key effort in the newly created role of Director of Real Estate and Strategic Development. Moving forward, Adams will manage a growing team of real estate and land acquisition specialists.

For the past five years, Adams has served as Roseburg’s Director of Timberlands. He was the company’s Timberland Manager for 12 years before that.
