Hattiloo Theatre proudly presents Dominique Morisseau’s “Paradise Blue”. This play is set in Paradise Valley. Paradise Valley was a vibrant hub of African American culture in Detroit during the 1950s, located within the Black Bottom neighborhood. Known for its lively nightlife, jazz clubs, and thriving entertainment scene, it was a place where Black residents could find community, celebrate their heritage, and escape the discrimination and segregation prevalent in other parts of the city. Paradise Valley played a crucial role in the cultural and social development of African Americans, serving as a symbol of resilience, creativity, and empowerment.
Dominique Morisseau is a Detroit-based playwright whose work explores themes of race, class, and the American Dream. Inspired by her personal experiences, Morisseau's plays delve into the complexities of Detroit's history and present-day challenges. Her writing is characterized by its raw honesty, poetic language, and strong female characters. Beyond her artistic contributions, Morisseau is committed to creating a more inclusive theatre experience. Her work serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of diverse representation on the American stage.

Our mandate at Catalyst was to forge new ground for a sustainable future, while also honoringtheculturallegacyuniquetotheBlackTheatre.Ourdaysofworkshops, peerdiscussions, case studies, and uncomfortable get-up-on-your-feet team building exercises culminated with a Community Summit. One of the five panelists was Ruben SantiagoHudson.
Ruben received the 1996 Tony Award for Best Featured Performer in August Wilson’s Seven Guitars He wrote the autobiographical play Lackawanna Blues in 2001, and adapted it into the award-winning 2005 HBO film of the same name. From 2009 to 2011, he played Captain Roy Montgomery in ABC's Castle He’s been quite busy since then, winningObieAwards, theLucilleLortelAward, andanotherTonyAward.

Sometimes I cast my millstone as if it’s attachedtoalasso.
Over the course of the next 11 months, Ruben and I remained in contact. I texted him about this. Called him about that. Emailed him about both this and that. We didn’t see one another in person again until July 2015. I dragged my millstone to Williamstown, Massachusetts, where I joined him at the Williamstown Theatre Festival. He was directing Dominique Morisseau’s new play – Paradise Blue. I traveled there to serve as Ruben’sassistant.Nothisassistantdirector, butratherasthepersonwhopickeduphis lunchandkeptupwithwhereheleftoffbeforethelastrehearsalbreak.

The play starred TV/film actor Blair Underwood, who I walked with to the gym each morning. One Sunday afternoon, after rehearsal, I walked about Williams College’s campus with Broadway actor Keith Randolph Smith. I found myself having a quick coffee-chat with Kyra Sedgwick – best known for her starring role as Deputy Chief BrendaLeighJohnsononthecrimedramaTheCloser–whowasstarringinaplaytitled, Between the Lines: Off the Main Road. This past December 2023, I participated in a second Catalyst convening in New York City.About50Blacktheatrepractitionersdiscussedthepresentstateandfutureoutlook of Black theatre, which is, in many ways, being undermined by equity, diversity and inclusion initiatives. There were panel discussions and more uncomfortable get-up-onyour-feetteambuildingexercises.
At one lunch, I carried my millstone to the table where Dominique Morisseau and twotime Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Lynn Nottage were sitting and eating. I sat, eavesdropped for about a minute, and then brought up the previous session’s theme aboutBlacktheatre’spremieiringmorenotableBlackplays.Wechewedonourthoughts and our salads. Lynn left the table first, leaving me and Dominique there to talk about other things. I swung the spotlight onto her career for a moment and said, “you know, we’reproducingParadiseBlueatHattiloonextseason.”
