It’s Christmas Eve and Eb Scroo is seeking to snuff out the season’s cheer by demanding that all debts owed him be satisfied before nightfall. Facing imprisonment, a Christmas without presents and a feast, the residents are desperate. In this urban spin of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, the ghosts and characters are icons of Black culture.

Ekundayo Bandele is a playwright and theater director whose work has significantly impacted the American theater landscape. He has directed three plays by August Wilson and served as an assistant to Tony Award-winning director/actor Ruben Santiago Hudson. America (Ensemble Theatre), highlight his dedication to telling stories that reflect the richness and complexity of the Black experience. Bandele is also the founder and CEO of Hattiloo Theatre in Memphis, Tennessee, one of the only freestanding Black repertory theaters in the region. Since founding Hattiloo in 2006, he has transformed it into a nationally recognized institution that celebrates and preserves Black culture through theatre.
Under his leadership, Hattiloo completed August Wilson’s full Century Cycle, premiered new works such as Geoffrey Owens’ Now I Am Alone and Kennon Scott II’s The Genius of Being Stupid, and showcased talent like Harry Lennix, Charles S. Dutton, and Debbie Morgan.
A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Morehouse College, Bandele has studied and taught theatre internationally, led a $4.3 million campaign to build Hattiloo’s debt-free facility, and founded both the Hattiloo Institute of Black Theatre Studies and Bandele Blueprint—a consulting firm that helps arts organizations grow, build revenue, and strengthen cultural authenticity.
