HB’s Fellowships in Applied Studies HB’s Fellowships in Applied Studies give students the chance to diverge from the traditional academic framework, explore unique interests, and put their knowledge in action through hands-on, real world contexts.

The students sharing their capstone project work today have engaged in a wide range of coursework and experiences over the course of their years in the Upper School at HB, including travel, internships, sustained investigations, academic writing, research, entrepreneurship, management, advocacy and action. Their capstone projects are the culmination of this work.

You can find descriptions of all the projects students completed this year in the following pages, with information about when and how they will be presented. Students are listed alphabetically by Fellowship.

Venezuela Project: A Financial Literacy Curriculum for High School Students Nyah Farah created a financial literacy curriculum for high school students in Venezuela. The curriculum highlights entrepreneurship, budgeting, marketing and behavioral economics.

Performing Arts Across Cultures: An Experience with Beijing Opera and the Traditional Chinese Flute Giving Chao studied traditional Chinese flute (dizi) and Beijing opera singing. She selected favorite pieces that she then performed.

Arranging Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 for a Clarinet Quartet Jessie Zhang explored music composition by arranging one of her favorite pieces for a clarinet quartet. After arranging, she recorded and layered the separate parts using editing software.

Approaching Self Destruction Sophia Vovos created a presentation about self destructive habits among young women, guiding parents, close friends, and family members on how to assist the person with these habits.

Pen to Policy: Youth Advocacy Through Letters to Legislators Charlotte Kleid wrote letters to local, state, and national legislators advocating policy change, then led workshops teaching high school students how to craft persuasive letters to their own representatives.
