Welcome We are so pleased to pull together the events and activities happening all over Wales for this years National Hate Crime Awareness Week. This year has continued to be challenging and for many of those who have experienced hate, the impact has been detrimental to their mental and physical health, self esteem, wellbeing and financial stability. National Hate Crime Awareness Week was founded in 2009 to mark the 10th anniversary of the Nail Bomb attacks in London and its ethos of bringing people together to stand in solidarity with those affected by hate crime, to remember those we have lost, and support those who need ongoing support is something that partners in Wales are determined to achieve. It’s wonderful to see so much activity in Wales from local initiatives to Pan Wales events and we’re proud to work with our partners to ensure Hate has no home in Wales. Please do use this guide to attend local events, link up with new partners or to show support on social media. We also have a Social Media Communication Package with free resources you can use online as well as many open virtual sessions you can attend throughout the week. Meet the team

The Hate Crime team in Wales is made up of Jessica Rees, the Hate Crime lead, a team of experienced and expert Victim Care Officers and Case Workers, and the Training & Engagement Team. Here we introduce you to the Training & Engagement Team; Jessica Rees - Hate Crime Lead She / Her

Jessica Rees is the National Lead for Hate Crime at Victim Support and manages the National Hate Crime Report and Support Centre Wales which is a Welsh Government funded service run by Victim Support. Previously Jessica managed the Rainbow Bridge project for LGBT+ survivors of domestic abuse. Jessica was responsible for setting up and delivering the service in Cardiff, which was the only specialised LGBT+ domestic abuse service in Wales at the time. Jessica has also volunteered for Stonewall Cymru as an Information Service volunteer, for South Wales Police within the Corporate Support department and prior to this as a Mentor for young people leaving Care.

Claire Guthrie - South Wales She / Her

Claire is the Training and Engagement Officer for South Wales. Since starting at the end of last year, Claire has worked across the region to deliver hate crime awareness sessions to community groups, as well as voluntary and statutory organisations. For many years she has worked as a support worker in supported housing, rehabilitation and gambling support services. Claire is also a counsellor in private practice.

Trudy Pease - North Wales She / Her

Hello, my name is Trudy Pease; I am the Victim Support Training and Engagement Officer for North Wales. I cover all six Counties, Gwynedd, Anglesey, Conwy, Denbighshire, Flintshire and Wrexham. Many of you have met me either face to face or virtually but I am sure there are many more people and organisations that I have yet to work with. Kathy Wilson - Gwent She / Her

Hello Everyone! My name’s Kathy Wilson and I’m a Training and Engagement Officer for the Hate Crime Team in Victim Support. My role covers the Gwent Area, that is: Newport, Caerphilly, Blaenau Gwent, Torfaen and Monmouthshire. I work with communities and organisations in the Gwent area to raise awareness of Hate crime, how it affects people and how to report and get support. Now that the restrictions from the Covid pandemic are easing, I’m enjoying getting out and about in the community and getting to know people in person rather on the other side of a screen. I started with Victim Support as an emotional support volunteer over two years ago. My volunteering helped me to learn more about Hate crime from our service users and made me want to get involved in tackling Hate Crime in other ways. So when the opportunity for a position on the Training and Engagement team came up, I couldn’t wait to apply. And the rest as they say, is history!

Becca Rosenthal - Dyfed Powys She / Her

I’m Becca, I’m the Training & Engagement Officer for Dyfed Powys; Carmarthenshire, Pembrokeshire, Ceredigion and Powys. It’s quite a big geographical area. I joined the team two years ago. I love the training aspect that we deliver, supporting people to grow their knowledge around hate crime and the support that’s available. I’ve always cared deeply about our communities in Wales, and this has shaped my career all along. Previously I’ve worked in communities high on the deprivation scale in Wales, in Co-production, as a trainer and also as a project evaluation consultant. It’s been great to work in a team that’s authentic in their passion for supporting people who have experienced hate crime. I’m keen to connect with even more organisations, groups and community leaders in my area, so please get in touch!

The Mid & West Wales Community Cohesion Team invites schools and youth groups to take part in the 'Design a Diversity T-Shirt competition. What do you need to do? Create an image that celebrates diversity and understanding of different groups in our society. Who can enter? Schools and youth groups based in Carmarthenshire, Pembrokeshire, Ceredigion and Powys. What's the prize? The winning design receives £100 for the school / youth group, and the design is turned into a T-shirt for the winner to keep The closing date is Friday 16th Oct 2021. An evening of Multi-cultural music around the campfire (Activity Park, Newbridge, Gwent)

Musicians from Africa and India will be performing at the event. Scouts will have the opportunity to try the musical instruments and learn about the Cultural Identity of the musicians at the event. Ceredigion County Council - Youth Work

-During the week they’ll be working with the Intact Team at DPP to undertake work in various areas around the country, such as Aberystwyth, Lampeter, Abereaeron and Cardigan. -The team will be working on an early intervention and preventions project delivered through the schools and Post 15 groups. The project aims to provide young people with support with a view to reducing offending and limiting their risk of exploitation, serious violence, emotions and behaviour. -We will also be working with Arad Goch as they will be delivering ‘Crossing The Line’ Project which focuses on raising awareness of crime including how county lines effect young people’s mental health and wellbeing and our communities. The project will hold practical discussions in the for drama workshops, read and discuss the script as a way of stimulating conversation, show part or all of the performance followed by discussion. Cwmbran Centre for Young People One Love Campaign

Two events will be hosted that and will include discussing and promoting equality, diversity and inclusion. The events will also address prejudice, hate and bullying. We will also explore the LGBTQ+ community and look at how people’s attitudes change through education and experience. The team will use the “It’s a sin” series written by Russell T Davies and the movie “Everyone’s talking about Jamie” to provide examples and topics for discussion. They will also look at myths and facts surrounding the LGBTQ+ community Young people will be informed about the benefits of reporting hate crime and given contact details. Young people will also be encouraged to speak to the CCYP team if they have any concerns about their safety or the safety of others. ceri.ormond@ccyp.org.uk

Theatre Production

Dyfed-Powys Police and Crime Commissioner Dafydd Llywelyn has commissioned theatre company, Mewn Cymeriad to create a short play for year 8 pupils in Secondary Schools, to raise awareness of hate crime, that is to be launched as part of Hate Crime Awareness Week this October. Following receiving the funding from the PCC, Mewn Cymeriad have been working with renowned author and playwright Manon Steffan Ross to write a Welsh and English one man play, that will tour secondary schools from 11th of October onwards. Hate crime can be so detrimental to young victims affecting their education, confidence and well-being. This play will see actor, Morgan Llywelyn Jones, play the role of three different people - the perpetrator, the one who ignores the crime, and the victim. It is hoped that the work will encourage further discussion and help raise awareness and understanding of the effects of hate crime within our communities. Dyfed-Powys Police School Beat Team will be providing workshops on Hate Crime to year 8 pupils following each performance with the aim of encouraging discussion around the topic of Hate Crime, which is of great relevance to the world today. www.dyfedpowys-pcc.org.uk

This National Hate Crime Awareness Week the Charter reaches it’s FIRST anniversary. The Hate Crime Charter sets out a number of rights for victims and witnesses of hate crime. Organisations large and small are invited to sign up to the Victim Support Hate Crime Charter. Those that sign up and take positive action to enact the charter and create a better environment for victims and witnesses of hate crime are awarded the Trustmark for display within the organisation and on promotional materials. Did you know that the Hate Crime Training & Engagement team are able to offer FREE training across Wales. Training topics include:

Hate Crime – An introduction to hate crime in modern Wales – what it is, who it affects, what’s the impact, what support is available and how can you access it or refer people. Approx 2 hours

Mate Crime – A short introduction to the complexities of mate crime, links with disability hate crime, research on vulnerable groups and safeguarding. Approx 1 hour.

Anti-Social Behaviour (ASB) related Hate Crime – This session explores ASB related hate crime, its victims and impacts and also shares good practice responses from across Wales. Approx 1 hour.

Know Your Rights – a community level session, this supports residents in local

communities to become aware of their rights as victims of hate crime, it introduces the Victims Code and explores different ways of reporting and accessing support.

"Put Yourself In Our Shoes"

Young People of TGP Cymru’s Refugee and Asylum Programme have produced a Video entitled “Put Yourself In Our Shoes ” with the message that learning early that diversity and difference should be understood, respected and celebrated the young people ask others in Wales to help stop discrimination and create sanctuaries where everyone can feel safe. Co-produced with Promo Cymru the video was made possible by an award from People’s Postcode Trust, a grantgiving charity funded by players of People’s Postcode Lottery. During Hate Crime Awareness Week, Migrants' Rights Network and Victim Support will be hosting a workshop on hate crime and about what your rights are as a migrant. Nancy's SUMMER WORK EXPERIENCE

Thank you for spending the summer with us Nancy, tell us about your work experience…. Over the summer I had opportunity to find out some more about Hate Crime and the work of the Hate Crime Team in Wales. I got to hear from people in the team about their work, observed a Mate Crime awareness training session, got an overview of how social media can be used (positively) and listened in to a phone call with the mum of a young person who was experiencing racist hate crime at school. I also did a transcript of a Good Practice Event recording which was good as I got to hear about a wide range of activity and some experiences/perspectives from a wide range of partners including community groups and the police. Before doing this work experience, I had a good awareness of racism and sexism from personal experience as a Black African/White young woman and some awareness of homophobia from things I had seen or heard from a good friend and social media but less awareness of hate crime in relation to other protected characteristics so it was good to hear more about the wide range of work. I observed a training session on Mate Crime with members of a disability group. Mate Crime happens when someone ‘befriends’ another person to exploit or abuse them which is horrible because this means there is a deliberate intention to get to know someone to treat them really badly or to gradually treat someone you have gotten to know as ‘less than’ over time. I had read about Gemma Hayter and found it really shocking that people could deliberately exploit and abuse/murder her while pretending to be her friend. Sometimes all disabled people are seen as ‘weak’ and easy targets but this is a stereotype and we should remember that every disabled person is an individual with their own identity, needs and desires. Having said that people with learning disabilities can be more vulnerable to mate crime especially if they have not been given the right sort of information/support around how to be alert and make safe relationships. In the training participants were encouraged to share their experiences and talk about the issues which was a good way to make sure they understood what mate crime is.

I did some social media training and learnt about using Canva and making Instagram posts to get information out to a wide range of people. I think the use of social media is good because it can reach people who wouldn’t necessarily think Hate Crime would be anything to do with them. One of the issues raised in the Good Practice event was how to get everyone involved in conversations and to see that we all have a responsibility to treat everyone with respect. There is a lot of work going on to raise awareness of hate crime (the number of people being trained has increased hugely during the pandemic as it can be easier to join zoom sessions) and get more people to report hate crime but it would be better if it can be prevented. I really liked the work that is happening in schools to raise awareness and develop Hate Crime Champions as it is essential that children grow up feeling confident about talking about issues and develop positive perspectives rather than being influenced by negative stereotypes/views. I think schools can and should do more to facilitate these conversations and provide positive inputs as well as challenge people who hold negative views and deal effectively with people who perpetrate hate crimes. I listened in to one phone call to the mum of a young person who had been called racist names in school over a long period of time and heard her frustration because school hadn’t done anything to respond effectively and this was having a huge impact on her daughter. It was good that she had reported it and wanted the support of the Hate Crime team to help her challenge the school as this should have a positive outcome for the young person and hopefully raise awareness at that school. I would encourage everyone to get involved in helpful conversations about Hate Crime and get support as the Hate Crime team and their partners can actively deal with issues and help to bring about positive changes for the future.

National Hate Crime Awareness this year is between October 9th and 16th. We have been made aware by members of an increase of hate crime aimed at Disabled People, with members reporting negative experiences including being harassed for wearing a lanyard to show mask exemption.

Gwent Police will also be attending our Disabled People Hate Crime event on October 14th at 10am. They will be talking about the process if you do/ did decide to report a hate crime to police.

Conversations with children and young people affected by hate crime in Wales

In 2019, the Welsh Government’s Equality Team initiated research on children and young people (CYP) (11–16 years old) affected by hate crime in Wales. The first phase of this research focused on mapping and describing the current provision and the support in place for young people affected by hate crime and hate incidents in Wales. Based on the learning and knowledge of the first phase, the second phase of this project focused on conversations with young people about hate crime. It aimed to provide a snapshot of the knowledge and awareness of hate crime and hate incidents and support provision, better understand the perspective of current provision and explore barriers to engagement with support services. The research also aimed to provide recommendations on how to improve the engagement of, and support for, CYP affected by hate crime in Wales.

The West Gwent Community Cohesion Officer is collaborating with Gwent Dragons to promote HCAW during their home match on 15th. This includes match day program information, tannoy announcements, HCAW banner picture with players before kick off. We are also circulating beer mats to all affiliated rugby clubs across the region. The beer mats contain the dragons equality logo and the hashtags #RugbyForAll #RugbyAgainstRugby #HateHurtsWales The team have also allocated funding to 5 third sector organisations and will be supporting them to deliver their activities: ·Cwmbran Centre For Young People ·BGFM radio which includes VS interview ·MenterCaerfilli ·Torfaen Gypsy and Traveller association ·CRAI Scouts For more information, please contact Michael.morgan@torfaen.gov.uk

Good Practice in Hate Crime

Following the successful ‘Good Practice in Hate Crime’ event held in July 2021, the team is in the process of drawing together good practice from across Wales from Hate Crime Leaders and organisations and community groups that signed up to the Hate Crime Charter, and beyond.

Coming Up... Thinking Together Forum

Join the North East Wales Regional Cohesion Team for Thinking Together 2021 – an interactive forum to share ideas and resources for hate crime prevention in Wrexham, Flintshire and Denbighshire. Thinking Together recognises that hate crime prevention begins by nurturing an inclusive understanding of diversity, and by building resilience against harmful misconceptions and misinformation. This forum provides an opportunity for our team and our network of community partners and service providers to share how we are collectively working towards those goals – what’s going well; what we need to change; and what new approaches we can take to make our communities safer. South Wales Police

17th October 2021. South Wales Police will be sharing HC awareness messages at the Swansea v Cardiff Game. Hate Crime messages will appear on the big screens and inside the programmes.

Dyfed Powys Police

Victim Support are working with School Police Officer Geraint Skyrme and Gwernyfed School to develop champions within the school. Gwernyfed will be one of the first schools to sign up to the Hate Crime Charters. Pupils within the school will then become ambassadors for fairness and equality through a peer trained system.
