Message
from the Artistic Director
Janek Schergen
Singapore Dance Theatre began its professional journey thirty years ago with a debut performance in June 1988 at the Victoria Theatre! To establish the company was a very visionary moment for Goh Soo Khim and Anthony Then, the co-founding Artistic Directors of the company. The concept of SDT was always to keep one foot in our heritage and tradition of classical ballet, and to match it equally with venturing forward into the world of neoclassical and contemporary choreography to balance our performances onstage. As such, we are celebrating what we envision as our “Diamonds and Pearls” anniversary year, as we represent both traditional and modern aspects in our nature.
I’ve hoped for a long time to bring Giselle to The Esplanade’s stage. It has such a meaningful and profound place in the history of both ballet and SDT. We will bring it to our audiences with all its depth, dramatic intensity, and memorable character to begin our season on the right note. June will bring back our ballet for children, Peter & Blue’s Forest Adventure, to introduce young audiences to the joy of dance. In July, we present our international repertory season with our 30th Anniversary Gala season at the Esplanade Theatre, comprising of Four ballets that showcase what is truly representative of our repertoire.
Ballet Under the Stars in September will give us a special treat with a whole weekend devoted to ballets by
Singaporean choreographer, ChooSan Goh. October welcomes our contemporary season, Passages, to the stage once again; it has become a cornerstone in our development as a dance company, and a forum to introduce some of the most beloved choreographers to the audiences. Our 30th Anniversary season will conclude at the Esplanade Theatre with the classical ballet masterpiece, Sleeping Beauty. It is considered to be an incomparable ballet in every measure, and we are proud that SDT possesses a production of such great authority and beauty.
One of the strongest parts of the mission of SDT has always been the development of new choreography, and to that end, we have premiered 28 world premieres and 18 company premieres and new productions in the last decade. Now it is time to reflect on these achievements, and bring back to our audiences all that is special in our extensive repertoire. At this momentous mark of our third decade, we have gained the skill and passion to bring our artistry to our audiences with the greatest of pleasure. The company was conceived to give our audiences memorable experiences and it continues till this day, with continues to be our heart and core mission. The spectacle and artistry of dance as an art form is there, timelessly, to create memories and enrich our lives.

INTRODUCING SEASON 2018
Diamonds and Pearls
Celebrating Traditional Choreography
Singapore Dance Theatre (SDT) celebrates its 30th Anniversary this year! Just as how Silver represents a 25th Anniversary, Pearl is the traditional symbolisation for a 30th Anniversary, and Diamond the modern symbol. As such we are inviting you to celebrate 30 years of traditional and modern choreography, and commemorate this joyous and memorable year with us as we bring to you the Diamonds and Pearls of our repertory!
Season 2018 will present the undeniable beauty of the old and thrilling splendour of the new, including some of the most established and treasured classical ballet gems like Giselle, Sleeping Beauty, and Rubies; as well as three premieres by various choreographers including Nils Christe, Timothy Harbour, and Timothy Rushton.
Through the past three decades, SDT’s repertoire has developed remarkably. With our heritage in traditional classical ballet remaining steadfast and unwavering, we are committed and deeply devoted to presenting brand new classical, neo-classical, and contemporary works by internationally renowned choreographers. We are dedicated to bring to you performances and celebrations that create cherished moments that will last you a lifetime.
thirty years of Traditional & Modern Choreography
Every creation is a tapestry of emotions and experiences, weaved to form a fleeting moment that ought to be experienced in awe and splendour. It is never quite the same, even when it’s performed again. Every performance is ever evolving – from the way the dancers move and feel, to how your heart melds with ours. Both dancer and audience mature over time, always encountering a perpetual sophistication in every choreography.
At SDT, we are ever diversifying and enlarging our capacity towards exploring greater forms of expression and creativity, and we believe that Season 2018 will be a poignant milestone year for all of us.
Celebrate our 30th Anniversary with us, and experience for yourself the ephemeral wonder of being in unison with the dancers for that singular moment, with our breaths held in and where our hearts connect.

The breath-taking yet heart-wrenching tale of romance and betrayal, Giselle is a ballet in two acts, featuring choreography by Jean Coralli and Jules Perrot, and staging with additional choreography by Janek Schergen and set to a memorable score by Adophe Adam. SDT first performed Giselle in 1999, and it remains to be one of the longest-standing and well-loved classics in the company’s history.

“Experiencing the arts can never start too early, and an appreciation of movement, music, and spectacle can lead us into wonderful realms of possibility.” – Janek Schergen (Artistic Director, Singapore Dance Theatre)
In 2010, Janek Schergen choreographed a three-part ballet series, Peter & Blue, as a performance solely dedicated to family with young children. It is an hour-long ballet specially created for the wee ones, and this year’s Peter & Blue’s Forest Adventure will feature a live narration that engages with the children.
Interweaving the magic of fairy-tale and delightful dancing and meaningful morals, this children’s production tells the story of the ever-inquisitive trio – Peter, his dog, Blue, and his cat, Calico. The trio embark on yet another magical adventure, ending off with a blast at a huge birthday celebration! Children will get to meet with the dancers and take photos with them after each performance.

Students will also get to watch excerpts from the SDT’s theatrical repertoire, as well as understand the differences between classical and contemporary dance.

Dance Spectrum is a new installment to compliment Introduction to Ballet. Participants will be brought to the next level of dance appreciation as well as learn about the development of dance styles. Students will be treated with excerpts from the SDT’s repertoires. Audience etiquette is an important part of any performance and participants will be introduced to the finer aspects.

Ambassador’s Circle 2018
SDT celebrates 30 years in existence in 2018. From a dream shared by our two founders, Mdm Goh Soo Khim and Anthony Then to establish Singapore’s very own national dance company and starting out with 7 dancers, the company has evolved and grown into an internationally recognised and respected professional dance company, performing a balanced repertoire of classical and contemporary works.
About Ambassador’s Circle 2018
In celebration of the 30th Anniversary, Ambassador’s Circle 2018 seeks to acquire the 30th Anniversary Gala programme that will be performed in July 2018; consisting of a mixture of company and world premieres by distinguished choreographers Nils Christe and Timothy Habour, as well as works by the legendary Choo-San Goh. Each choreographer brings a distinct style and flavour that represents Singapore Dance Theatre as a whole and this evening has been carefully planned out to showcase the versatility of SDT.
To date, SDT has added over 80 world premieres since 1988. This would not be possible without the kind support that many individuals and organisations have contributed towards this achievement. Since SDT’s inception, it is important for the company to establish a unique repertoire, representing the company’s distinctive abilities.
SDT invites you to kindly be part of Ambassador’s Circle 2018 in celebrating this milestone with us. Your contribution to Ambassador’s Circle not only assists SDT in building our artistic repertoire, but also seeks to develop a new generation of loyal audiences. Through your kind support, SDT will be able to continue to grow and progress for future generations of dancers-to-be and loyal audience members to be proud of.
Join us in celebrating our 30 years of the best in dance, and in the continuous growth with SDT.
The 30th Anniversary Gala
The 30th Anniversary Gala will stage two new works and two works by Choo-San Goh; Double Contrasts and Configurations pas de deux. The company premiere of SYNC by Nils Christe will be accompanied by a world premiere by Timothy Harbour, specifically created to showcase the dancers of SDT. Due to the long standing relationship between SDT and the two choreographers,it has resulted in them creating world premiere ballets for us, using the strength of the company as an inspiration. Timothy Harbour, Resident Choreographer of the Australian Ballet, recently choreographed Another Energy for SDT in 2016 which was his first work for SDT. Nils Christe choreographed Organ Concerto especially for SDT in 2012, and the acquisition of Fearful Symmetries and Symphony in Three Movements were made possible through the support of Ambassador’s Circle 2011 and 2016.

About Singapore Dance Theatre
Singapore Dance Theatre (SDT) was founded in 1988 by Goh Soo Khim and Anthony Then. The Company has since developed into Singapore’s premier professional dance company comprising of 32 Company dancers plus apprentices. In 2002, SDT was honoured with the opportunity to grace the official opening of the Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay with the opening performance of Boi Sakti’s Reminiscing the Moon
More than a decade on, SDT continues to have the privilege of performing in a world-class performing arts venue, exhilarating audiences with a myriad of repertoires. In the course of each year, the Company performs six seasons annually, with three full ballet performances at the stage of Esplanade Theatre. The highlights of the Company’s performance season each year include the widely popular outdoor dance event – Ballet Under the Stars at the Fort Canning Park, two full length classics, and also Masterpiece in Motion which brings together three works of the finest international choreography, as well as Passages Contemporary Season.
The Company’s repertoire ranges from classical to contemporary ballet, from renowned choreographers like Choo-San Goh, George Balanchine, Stanton Welch, Xing Liang, Val Caniparoli, Graham Lustig, David Dawson, Jorma Elo, Edmund Stripe, Kinsun Chan, Edwaard Liang, Nils Christe, Toru Shimazaki, Christina Chan and Timothy Harbour.
In 2008, Janek Schergen was appointed Artistic Director of SDT. Under his leadership, the Company has made new achievements in the international and Singapore dance arena. In the last ten years, the Company has added 28 world premieres and 18 company premieres and new productions to the repertoire, in addition to numerous revivals of the existing Company’s repertoire. Janek is also the Artistic Director of the Choo-San Goh & H. Robert Magee Foundation which oversees the licensing and production of Choo-San Goh’s ballets and the annual Choo-San Goh Awards for Choreography.
In 2013, SDT moved to a new premise in Bugis+ with four state-of-the-art studios. Additionally, the Company will be enhancing efforts in education and outreach, bringing the appreciation of dance to a wider audience in Singapore.
International Touring
Singapore Dance Theatre has captivated audiences in Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Switzerland, Cambodia, Hong Kong, China, Australia, France, United States and London. The Company has taken part and has performed in numerous international festivals and events, such as Le Temps d’Aimer la Danse a Biarritz in France, Mexico’s Festival Internacional Cervantino, Chang Mu Arts Festival in Korea, Philippines Festival of Dance, and was part of the Victorian Arts Centre’s Made to Move subscription series. SDT tours Kuala Lumpur and Penang annually, and has seen a growth in its dedicated support to the company. Through the invitation of Sadlers Wells, SDT has also performed at London’s Singapore season at the Peacock Theatre. Seen to be a little Asiatic gem, “the Company’s strength lies in a seamless transition between strong classical technique and contemporary movement.” said Graham Watts of Ballet. Co magazine. Stephanie Burridge of Ballet Dance (UK) highlighted that “The Company is versatile, talented and disciplined… the breadth of the repertoire takes them internationally beyond Singapore’s shores but their sensibility is undeniably Asian; underpinned by a strong local foothold and empathy.”
Arts Education Programme and Outreach
Singapore Dance Theatre has been a recipient of the National Arts Council's Major Grant since 2000. As a major grant recipient from the Singapore government and in keeping with SDT’s commitment to bring the finest in dance to the public audience, on-going Education and Outreach programmes such as Dance Appreciation Series (jointly presented with Esplanade Co.) and One @ the Ballet (a monthly in-studio presentation) are organised to provide people with the opportunity to appreciate dance. SDT has also created the Scholars Programme which is designed to be a pre-professional training programme or student dancers who are seriously interested in the pursuit of a professional dance career. SDT also offers special courses for non-dancers and adult students. These efforts aim to make dance more accessible to the masses. SDT hopes to spread the beauty, passion and discipline of dance to as many people as possible, and place Singapore in the minds of international dance aficionados.

Coppélia
16 – 19 March 2017
Esplanade Theatre
The most whimsical and enchanting ballet of all-time, Coppélia is a joyous ballet that radiates revelry and merriment throughout the theatre, from the stage to your very own seats.
Based on a story by E.T.A. Hoffmann, this three-act ballet tells the light-hearted story of the mysterious Dr Coppélius who owns a beautiful life-sized mechanical doll, Coppélia. A village youth named Franz, betrothed to the beautiful Swanilda becomes infatuated with Coppélia, not knowing that she is just a doll. The magic and fun begins when Swanilda disguised as Coppélia springs to life!
With original choreography by Arthur St. Léon, Coppélia is staged with additional choreography by Janek Schergen. Be enthralled by this magical production that is set to music by Léo Delibes.
Peter & Blue’s Birthday Party
8 – 11 June 2017
Esplanade Theatre Studio
“Peter & Blue was inspired by stories I knew as a child. Experiencing the arts can never start too early, and an appreciation of movement, music, and spectacle can lead us into wonderful realms of possibility.”
– Janek Schergen (Artistic Director, Singapore Dance Theatre)
Peter & Blue’s Birthday Party is an hour-long ballet specially created for the wee ones, and it featured live narration that engaged with the children. Interweaving the magic of fairy-tale and meaningful morals, this children’s production tells the story of the everinquisitive trio Peter, his dog, Blue, and his cat, Calico. The trio embark on yet another magical adventure, ending off with a blast at a huge birthday celebration!
