BARNEY HURIWAKA It takes a lot to scare Barney Huriwaka. Barney, 81, was woken in the early hours of the morning in January 2010 by an intruder smashing windows in his Flaxmere home. The random attack left every pane of glass in the house shattered - but Barney refused to be driven out of his home. Friends and whanau rallied to support him and find him a place in a retirement village, but he wouldn’t go. “I said I’m not going. I’m sticking right here,” he said. “This is where my kids grew up. It’ll take more than that to chase me out.”

FLAXMERE LIBRARY As part of Hastings District Council Libraries, Flaxmere Library has been a popular hub in the local community since it was built in 1986. Its librarians, ( from left) Judith McKinnon, Esther Curtis, April Harward and Laurens Jeffrey, are ready to help with a huge range of services, from research and children’s activities to helping readers finding exciting new authors. These days the library is abuzz with people getting online at the busy internet café, and staff are only too happy to help customers make the most of their time on the net, whether they are looking for jobs or researching their family tree. The library is also a welcoming space for community groups or friends meeting up and exchanging news. “It’s a place where people can walk in and feel comfortable,” April says. Flaxmere’s librarians are keen to make the library vibrant and relevant for the 21st century and the changing ways we share information.

LES HOKIANGA AND HIKOI 4 LIFE TEAM When Les Hokianga, pictured with John Taiti, left, and Paul Taiti, centre, started the Hikoi 4 Life programme, he took on a big task. The 17 participants were all obese, some weighing up to 200kg. The programme developed as part of his third-year studies at EIT was based on healthy lifestyle changes, good nutrition and fun exercise, developed specifically for Maori and Pacific people. Les and his group achieved remarkable goals: like cycling almost 300km from Hastings to Wellington to present the programme to Associate Health Minister Tariana Turia, to show how the programme was changing lives for the better. Now Les has funding to continue the programme, with the original participants who are acting as mentors. He’s also continuing his own journey to better health, competing in IronMaori in 2011.

MATIU LOVE Matiu Love was just 17 years old when he enlisted in the Maori Battalion. He sailed to Europe a baby, and came back a man, he says. “We grew up real quick once we got our first taste of action. We went over there for a good time and we certainly grew up.” He left without telling his grandfather, fearful he wouldn’t let him go. He phoned home during a stopover in Australia, and was told ‘you’ve gone that far you may as well keep going’. He returned from the war and went to work at the Whakatu meatworks. Now a resident at Swansea Village, he’s lived for more than 70 years in Hawke’s Bay.

PHIL AND ROS HORAN Phil and Ros Horan have been associated with Te Whare Aroha O Nga Mokopuna Early Childhood Centre for more than 20 years. Ros has been supervisor since 1991, and Phil joined the staff as administrator in 2009. Children are their focus: they enjoy sharing each child’s experience as they develop at the centre. They see their role as not just caring for children, but as an extension of the whole whanau - and now, and after two decades of helping young minds to grow, they are caring for a second generation of children at the centre.

RORY MCCALLUM Rory immigrated with his wife and baby son from the UK in 1997. Since then his family has grown to five children, and his parents joined them six years ago. “Family are of huge importance,” he says. At 16, Rory joined the Royal Marine Commandos, whose ethos is determination, courage, humility, loyalty and a sense of humour under adversity. “I continue to work hard to live life within the Commando doctrine, and I do have a strong belief that I can make a difference,” Rory says. In Flaxmere, he’s done just that. As the Flaxmere Community Centre manager, with a meagre operational budget, he raised funds to equip the centre with a quality gym and an impressive climbing wall. He has also spent the past eight years working with troubled youth. “I believe in the huge potential that exists in them. We may not be able to conquer all their problems, but it’s never too late to make a difference.”

STIRLING AND LISA HALBERT Stirling and Lisa Halbert have spent more than 20 years working for the community, and the past 10 years with Camberley-based community development service Te Ora Hou, contracted to implement the Camberley community plan. The couple - who have six children and nine grandchildren of their own - have committed themselves to making the community a safer and more vibrant place for all families. Lisa says the pay-off is seeing families change for the better. “The biggest thing is being able to help families and see them taking a pathway that’s so much more positive and uplifting.”

ZACK MAKAORE A tireless and committed community worker, Zack has been working closely with whanau and their tamariki for nearly 20 years. Zack founded the Te Taitimu Trust, which works with low-income whanau, and introduced other creative and innovative projects to support youth in Flaxmere and the wider Hastings community. Among the successful programmes introduced was the healthy lifestyle initiative Maraestyles, including a duathlon and Ki-O-Rahi tournament. Zack says he most enjoys the positive energy he gets from youth/rangatahi, and building future leaders.

U-TURN TRUST Trustees

Message from the trustees It’s been a busy twelve months since you received our last calendar and we hope you enjoy the new version for 2012 with its useful additions. Tracee Te Huia has joined our Trust and we thank Vicki Bostock for her tremendous contribution over the last two years, her passion and commitment to the people and especially the garden is greatly valued. So many things have happened at the Marae, in the garden and the community and especially with the MAC sport club that it is impossible to report on all within this small space. Suffice to say Flaxmere is on a roll, thanks to the huge contribution from a great group of people who care. Henare and Pam continue to do their work and cast their spell of love and commitment as the journey continues and our trust supports them as best we can. A big thanks to all of you who have contributed your time, energy and support as we couldn’t do it without you. The U-Turn Trustees
