Welcome back to The Lamex for the first of two home games in four days as we move towards the latter part of a busy and, let’s be honest, frustrating month. But as we welcome the players, fans and officials of Wycombe Wanderers today, we still stand seventh in League One and only three points outside the play-off places. With fourteen games still to play and our manager Steve Evans having agreed an improved and extended contract, it is the perfect time to reflect on the journey we have been on since his arrival just under two years ago.

We had nine games to go when we travelled to Exeter City on March 26th for his first game. Fighting for our League Two survival once again, we lost that one and the next, but Steve and his team then delivered four wins from the final seven to take us comfortably to safety by Easter.

Since then, as you all know, a fantastic season

last year delivered automatic promotion plus a thrilling FA Cup run.

And with the support of Paul Raynor, Alex Revell and investment in a strengthened squad, Steve has delivered an upward momentum well into this season, with significantly higher attendances along the way.

So what happens next? Nobody knows, such is football.

But every one of the thousand Boro fans at Pride Park last Saturday, and those at home watching on iFollow, will know how far we have come for us to be bemoaning undeserved defeat at the hands of Derby County and a slip to seventh in mid-Feb.

We are amongst the giants on merit, whilst striving to further improve at every level – from Foundation to First Team.

So don’t stop believing. Get behind the team, tell your friends there’s something going on in SG2.

FIRST GAME? YEAR, SEASON?

First game we went to was a slow and cold 0-0 Stevenage v Leyton Orient on the 23/10/21 in the West stand which we have watched a few games in and more recently we have watched a couple of games from the North Stand behind the goal, Stevenage v Port Vale, ended 1-1, was a cup game and the last game we went to.

BEST MEMORY/MEMORIES OF SUPPORTING BORO?

Best memory was Stevenage v Lincoln 1-0 as it was the first time Charlie had seen them win a game as the games we had been going to before that had all been draws.

FAVOURITE ALL-TIME PLAYER (AND WHY)?

Fav all time player is Carl Piergianni, good strong solid centre back, great heading ability to clear or score goals. Good leadership skills on and off the pitch.

FAVOURITE CURRENT PLAYER (AND WHY)?

He is also the fav current player as he’s such a new supporter.

WHY DO YOU LOVE BORO?

Loves Borough because he plays for Stevenage Borough Juniors (Sporting) and lives in Stevenage.

FAVOURITE BORO SHIRT?

Favourite shirt is the current home kit shirt as it’s an unusual design. Although he likes the old red and white striped home kit as that’s what he plays in and can pretend he’s playing for the men’s team when he puts it on.

It’s a big day for our Boro mascot team as we have no less than five super supporters backing the team all the way.

First up we say hi to Isabel Gibbs, 8, who lives in Stevenage and attends Larwood School.

Isabel lists goalkeeping and tap dancing among her hobbies and Taye Ashby-Hammond is her favourite player.

Next we welcome Leo Murray and also say HAPPY BIRTHDAY to him as he will be 14 today!!!

Leo lives in Biggleswade and attends Stratton School in the town. He says playing football, football stats and playing FIFA are among his hobbies and Taye Ashby- Hammond is also his favourite Boro star. We also welcome Theo Bailey Williams, 8, who lives in Ware and attends St Catherine’s School in the town. Theo enjoys football, swimming and NFL and Jamie Reid is his favourite player. Graham Westley’s side hosted a Woking team that hadn’t won in the whole of February, suffering three straight 1-0 losses and causing relegation to loom large. Boro were piecing together an incredible winning run. They had won nine straight games in all competitions and hadn’t lost in 15, making it almost three months since fans had seen their team be defeated.

Despite being firm favourites for the game, Stevenage struggled to find a breakthrough. They had grown used to finding the back of the net, scoring 11 in their last three fixtures but chances were squandered.

At the beginning of the second half Woking started to pose a threat of their own with a

dangerous cross that eluded all of their attackers as their best opportunity of the game.

However, despite Woking coming close, it was Stevenage who broke the deadlock. The away defence dealt poorly with an aerial ball forward as the headed clearance was quickly punched behind the defence and into the path of Lee Boylan, who slotted the ball into the back of the net.

Much like Woking’s past three fixtures, they failed to reply after going a goal behind as Stevenage extended their winning run to ten games. It was a stretch of form that led the club to an impressive 5th place finish however it amounted to nothing in the end as Boro fell to defeat in the semi-finals of the play-offs.

ON THIS DAY: 24 FEBRUARY

It all starts to get a little more intense at this stage of the season; the pressure mounts and the fixtures come thick and fast. On 24 February, Boro’ have turned out on 11 previous occasions – with varying degrees of success. Overall, you’re looking at six wins (more than half) and just two defeats… or three, if you count what happened today in 1982.

Now 42 years ago, we assume the United Counties League Knockout Cup is the one and the same we lifted as part of a league and cup double in the 1980-1 season. If so, our defence of that cup crown would come to an end at the quarter final stage today in 1982; Irchester Eastfield (then a division below us) dumping us out on penalties after extra time. It’s not all doom and gloom though; not when there are six wins from 11 to look back on. Our two most recent wins on this date are biggies too – even if they’re now 14 and 15 years ago respectively.

On 24 February 2010, Mark Roberts bagged the only goal as we won 1-0 at Wrexham –three huge points towards our title hopes and the first of eight straight league wins. We won’t say no to that sort of run now, thanks. Meanwhile, we had Lee Boylan to thank for the goal that settled affairs at home to Woking one year beforehand on 24 February 2009. Fun fact – we haven’t played the Cards in a competitive fixture since. Just once have we played on this date in the Football League era. But it was a 2-0 loss at Notts County four years ago – so we’re not going to dwell on that. One thing that you can take away with you for now. Apart from that defeat against Irchester Eastfield in 1982, Boro’ are unbeaten at home on this date. And we see no reason why that has to change…

we’ve been across to their place – as we did earlier this season – on eight occasions. We have a fair few Football League Trophy fixtures to thank for that. One quirk of our current record is that both sides currently boast a better record on the road. In the past nine here, we have won three and lost four. At their place, we’ve won four and lost three from eight. Boro’ can, however, address the imbalance here… if we manage to complete a league double over the Buckinghamshire side for the first time.

Just over seven years ago now, Boro’ registered our biggest-ever victory against Wycombe Wanderers – although we’ve since equalled with the same score in our 2022-3 Football League Trophy group stage victory. On this occasion in 2017, however, the stakes were perhaps a little higher. Our visitors were chasing promotion, while we were on the fringes of the playoff picture. By the end of the game, however, we’d done our cause no harm at all.

Steven Schumacher put us in front on 25 minutes when Matt Godden helped on Jobi McAnuff’s cross. We then went in at the break with a bigger lead after Godden bagged an eighth goal in as many games from the penalty spot in first half stoppage time. And it didn’t take long into the second half to seal the points; Tom Pett adding a third only four minutes after the interval. It left us four points behind the Chairboys, who dropped out of the playoff places on goal difference.

To play today?: Saxon Earley was the subject of much speculation at the end of the most recent transfer window. How much of it was true to say that he was linked with us is one for the people close to the situation. What we do know for definite is that our for-mer left-sided loanee chose the Chairboys to see out the remainder of this campaign. Elsewhere, Nick Freeman lines up in Boro’ colours against his former employers today.

Best of the Rest: An interesting and eclectic mix of players have represented both ourselves and the Chairboys over the years. Welcome back to the Lamex for this afternoon’s fixture and as always good luck to the Gaffer and troops in this encounter v Wycombe.

I would like to start by congratulating Ronnie Henry and the U18’s on successfully getting into Merit League 1. This morning, we hosted Leyton Orient in our last league encounter before we embark on a new season! Nick Mountford was also ever present with the U18 before his departure last week and deserve lots of credit, a determined, methodical, and ever reliable during his time with us. He joined in January 2023 full time and worked tirelessly with Ronnie to ensure we drove standards and there is no doubt the pair produced some enjoyable moments! He has departed to join Tottenham Hotspurs in the youth development phase. I would like to thank Nick for his 5-year service and wish him every success.

We are still in the process of recruiting a full time Head of Coaching. It’s vital we bring the right person in, and the delay is because we just haven’t found that person yet. We are also expanding our recruitment team with the introduction of a full time Head of Recruitment who will be tasked with finding the best local

talent to take us forward.

On the loan front, I have been delighted with the way Louis Henry has performed at Potters Bar Town FC. A first year who is playing regular football at Step 3 is always an encouraging sign. He has now been extended until the end of the season. Kymani Skyers continues to impress at Biggleswade FC, Noah Mosanya at Arlesey Town and Theo Alexandrou has also extended his loan with St Ives Town FC until the end of the season.

This half term has seen Louis Hrebeniak and Chris Barell provided more games for our pathway players all aiming to be the best they can be and hopefully progress through the club ranks. Josh C-Stevens, Ashley Taylor and Nosh Newman had a busy week as they recruit for our Education Development Programme 2024 intake.

Ninety minutes could not separate the two sides from Hertfordshire contesting one of the semi finals in the County Plate, leaving kicks from the penalty mark to determine the first finalist. A brace from Amana Oguntuga saw Boro come from behind twice to goals by Sherrie Evans and Billie Curtis requiring twelve penalties to be taken before the game could be decided thanks to a save from goalkeeper Lucy Fox.

Stevenage started reasonably, but it was the Saints who took the lead first. It took just ten minutes for Evans to meet a corner with her head and fire the visitors into ecstasy. Of course, this was only the beginning of a most dramatic showpiece.

Ella Mercer, captain for the day, stepped into the role brilliantly, with everything good about the Boro’ attack running through her. Her vision and range of passing was sublime, yet her shooting also required stopping, which is just what Laura Tyrrell did with a smart save to her right after a rocket from Mercer.

With half an hour passing by, Boro’ continued to pressure and after a few more minutes, they

deservedly drew level. Chloe Gregory, a regular goalscorer of late, instead helped to set up the goal with exceptional determination down the left flank. Her run allowed her to pull the ball back to Remi Martin who sent the ball towards the far post where Oguntuga was on hand to poke the ball home.

Within sixty seconds, Stevenage thought they were ahead as Martin sent Stephanie Fausse through on goal. She defeated Tyrrell by deftly lifting the ball over the oncoming ‘keeper, but she had not defeated the linesman’s flag, much to the chagrin of the watching Boro’ faithful. Martin and Mercer both had efforts that were repelled by Tyrrelland the only incident of note as the half drew to a close was a booking for the captain, Mercer, following a challenge by the St Margaretsbury box.

The next quarter of action saw a dip in play with neither side really threatening as both sides looked to see who would blink first. Sophie Jones found herself in the book for a late challenge, but with fifteen minutes remaining, the tie caught fire again. Curtis it was who broke clear into the box to fire the ball past Fox and put the Saints ahead, with one foot in the final. However, this Boro’ side has been unbeaten in 2024 and have shown a knack of never knowing when they are beaten. Fausse was first to test the mettle of the visitors with a close range effort that was scooped onto

the bar. Boro’ pressed and pressed and within two minutes had levelled again. It was Fausse again who explored the left flank. She found her opening and sent the ball high into the box, Tyrrell got fingertips to it, but could not stop the ball from landing at the feet of Oguntuga. Tyrrell threw herself bravely at the ball, but the Boro’ forward narrowly beat her to it to slam the ball home.

Stevenage had their tails up and worked hard to force an opening, but none appeared. Despite seven minutes of time added on, the game went to penalties, with extra time not played as usual in the County competitions.

Paige Pryor – a former Boro’ player - was first to step up and fire the ball past Fox’s fingertips. Despite the Boro’ stopper guessing the right way. Ella Mercer was next and she saw her effort hit the elbow of Tyrrell before hitting her back and rolling in. Boro’ survived the scare with a scoreline level.

Kally-Ann Westgarth took the third penalty which again brushed the fingertips of Fox before finding the back of the net while Fausse sent Tyrrell the wrong way. Amber Strows took probably the best penalty of the shootout as it cannoned off the inside of the post leaving Fox standing as she admired the unsavable penalty. Martin sent hers the same way, but low and Tyrrell couldn’t get down to stop it.

With six penalties taken the pressure began to ramp up. Evans saw her penalty squeeze in under Fox’s outstretched left hand, while Ella Hayes challenged Strows for penalty of the shootout with a strike that hit the underside of the bar before landing in the goal. Kat Martin was next up and her effort sent Fox the wrong way – Boro’ had to score.

Katie Boyle, who saw a penalty missed in a previous season – courageously stepped up before putting those demons to bed with a well taken penalty that left Tyrrell stranded. Hannah Fowler was the first to take a sudden death penalty and it was then that Fox was finally able to get strong contact and keep the ball out of the goal as she dived to her left.

That left Oguntuga. She made no mistake as she sent the ball low into the net and Boro’ into the final where they will face either Colney Heath or Letchworth Garden City Eagles.

In support of National Storytelling Week, we want to inspire children up to 12 years old to get creative and write a short story about the adventures of Boro Bear. Joe Jacobson

Club captain Jacobson is now in his ninth season at Adams Park, earning cult hero status throughout his time with the club due to his setpiece prowess.

The former Wales U21 skipper made his move to Wycombe in June 2014 after spending the majority of his youth career with hometown club Cardiff City.

He began his EFL career at Bristol Rovers, where he won Supporters’ Young Player of the Year, achieved promotion and reached an FA Cup

Quarter Final. He then moved on to Oldham, Accrington Stanley and Shrewsbury. Named as Shrewsbury’s Player of the Year in 2013/14, he then penned a deal at Adams Park, instantly catching the eye of fans and management alike with his set-piece prowess, notably his free-kick in the Chairboys’ play-off final at Wembley. Jacobson has established himself as the firstchoice left-back, finishing both the 2018/19 and 2019/20 seasons as leading goal scorer in all competitions, winning the League One PFA Fans’ Player of the Season in the latter. He scored a particularly memorable hat-trick against Lincoln City, scoring from a free kick and directly from two corners. His knack for goalscoring helped Wycombe reach the Championship, notching a penalty and an assist in the play-off campaign.

The Welshman continued to play a key part in the Chairboys squad, scoring four goals and assisting six during the Championship season, performing particularly effectively after the switch to a back three in the latter stages of the campaign, and remained an integral part of the defence in the 2021/22 campaign.

“OWWSA ‘bout that then”. The Chairboys are here this afternoon and on behalf of the Stevenage Supporters’ Association, I offer them the warmest of welcomes to our part of Hertfordshire. The “Official Wycombe Wanderers Supporters Association” (that’s OWWSA to you) is the main representative body of the fans and supporters of Wycombe Wanderers FC. OWWSA is ably chaired by Alan Hodgson, who in turn is supported by his trusty board, comprising: Michelle Phillips, Louise Stone, Sue McCloud, Margaret Hodgson, Rena Fontalski, Julie Haywood, Steve Phelps and Dave Goulding.

ADAM ANKERS

The Chairboys were saddened by the recent passing of 17 year old Adam Ankers. Adam was a huge Wycombe fan and suffered a cardiac arrest at a recent Under 19’s game. In honour of the youngster, the club renamed their stadium for last Saturday’s home game against Oxford Utd, from Adams Park to Adam’s Park as a gesture of respect.

PROUD BORO AT PRIDE PARK

Truly amazing support from the Stevenage fans at Derby County last Saturday. Three SA bus loads helped convey over 1,000 Boro supporters to help swell the total attendance at Pride Park to over 27,000, Incredible atmosphere and a great day out for everyone – but for Louie Sibley’s 90th minute winner for The Rams. Broke our hearts. One of the nicest, safest and friendliest stadiums I have personally been to – Pride Park in Derby.

INTER-CITY BORO

On Saturday March 2nd, we’re on the road again and this time our destination is Lincoln. Yep, we’re off to the LNER Stadium – or “Sinny Bank” as I remember it.

Who of you can remember the magical year of 1998, when in January, Stevenage held the mighty Newcastle United to a draw in the FA Cup at Broadhall Way to earn a replay at St James’s Park. Then, in December (the following season) we went to Sincil Bank in Lincoln, full of expectation, only to lose 4-1 in the 2nd round of the FA Cup. I digress.

The cost is £25 for members and £30 for non-members with a 10:00am departure from Stevenage.

Advance warning for Tuesday March 12th, when Stevenage are away to Peterborough. Buses to “The Posh” for this game depart The Lamex at 5:00pm and cost for a member is £20 whilst non-members pay £25.

FOOTBALL SUPPORTERS’ ASSOCIATION

The FSA has recently partnered with key rail industry stakeholders the Rail Delivery Group (RDG) to help them understand the issues that football match goers face when travelling by rail throughout the season. You can find the survey here. Although it has an away fan focus, the FSA would also appreciate home supporters who travel long distances to fill this in too.
