ood afternoon and welcome to the players, and officials of Mansfield Town.

As we welcome Mansfield here today, we do so in the knowledge that our recent form has taken us up the league table as planned and we can start to organise ourselves for next season in the EFL. I’m not too pleased having to come from this position, as I don’t see survival in the EFL as success or what we should ever be about. We’ve been competitive for most of our 10 seasons in the EFL and it’s only in the last couple of seasons that we’ve really fell down on the job, as far as results go. I feel that’s behind us now and I’m comfortable that the current management team – which is the key element in results – are a great fit for our Club and share our ambitions. Our excellent recruitment in the last January window, putting the lads signed from the National League out on loan and replacing them with seasoned EFL lads, has proved the catalyst that started our run of form. It was disappointing to lose by the odd goal at Salford last Saturday, putting an end to our 12 game unbeaten run, but for the

next 5 games we have a great chance to plan for next season. We have a good idea of those lads in the existing squad we want to go again with us next season to drive for a top 3 finish and we have a list of players in each position that we want to add.

Against all of that, we have the uncertainty of income for next season – when will crowds come back? To what extent – 25%? 50%? will away fans be allowed back? To what extent?

Will sponsors come back to support us if crowds are restricted? Will our investments in Conferencing and Banqueting pay for themselves to create new income? All in all, we are in a difficult position – we want to invest to climb the leagues, but we want to be sure that we don’t put the Club in danger. All in all, we have to make the right decisions at the right times.

In front of a crowd of 2,410, it was Jefferson Louis who grabbed a decisive brace to steer the home side to the three point haul, with Michael Warner, Jon Nurse and Justin Gregory coming on as second half subs to see it through.

However a draw at home to York and then THAT disappointing defeat at Forest Green marked the end of Boro’s hopes, and the end of the first Graham Westley era.

HISTORY ON THIS DAY: 17 APRIL Now into the second half of April, one result is all it takes to make or break a season. In the hunt for promotion or the battle for survival, any points you gain (or drop) can seal the deal – or end all hopes. And that’s perhaps no more evident than on this date in 2010 when Boro’ travelled to Aggborough; the Blue Square Premier title within sight.

If destiny was going to take over, we didn’t have to wait long to find out; Charlie Griffin scoring within the first couple of minutes. Joel Byrom added a second goal in the second half to end a long 14-year wait – and take us into the Football League for the first time. For anyone ever associated with the club, 17 April 2010 is a date never to be forgotten.

Now, how do you follow that? The other 11 games that Boro’ have played on this date in history are little more than a footnote when up against such a historic, magical moment. And certainly the first seven fixtures on this day are giving us little to remember fondly; drawing two and losing five.

Since a 2-1 win over Crawley Town in 2006, Boro’ are unbeaten on 17 April.

Both that victory and the following year’s over Rushden & Diamonds kept our playoff hopes alive.

Ultimately, however, we’d miss out on the top five both times.

As a Football League club, we’ve played twice on this date. And, somehow, both involve Carlisle United.

In 2012, Boro’ kept pressing for the League One playoffs with a vital 1-0 win at home. Five years later, it was our turn to hit the road; the playoffs again in sight, albeit a division lower.

Our 1-1 draw seems like a reasonable enough point there. But it was actually

the third successive game that we failed to win. It was also the midpoint of a six-match winless streak that saw our promotion hopes evaporate; Boro’ going on to fall short of the top seven by three points. Ah well, we’ll always have 2010 and you can’t ever take that from us…

YOU AGAIN? MANSFIELD TOWN This season, it’s fair to say we’re a team that’s well-versed in the art of the goalless draw. So, what odds another one here; our previous two meetings with the Stags ending up 0-0 – including the reverse game in October.

Draws have become somewhat common between ourselves and the Stags in recent times. Three of our last five fixtures ended all square.

This compares with our first 11 encounters where there was always a winner one way or the other. And it was more likely to be them; Mansfield Town winning seven out of 16 meetings to date, while we’ve won six.

With last season ending prematurely for obvious reasons, you have to go back to December 2018(!) for the last time we welcomed the Stags to the Lamex.

however, is a repeat of that performance; our guests winning 3-1 after a shocking second-half collapse saw us surrender a first-half advantage.

In fact, our home record against the Stags needs a serious injection of good news.

Our 3-0 win in September 2014 is the last time we came out on top here. Up until that point, our home head-to-head had been perfect – three wins in three fixtures, scoring three goals in each. And it all started with a five-goal thriller back in October 2008.

Let’s hope we can rediscover the apparently lost art of defeating Mansfield Town on home turf in this latest meeting.

irstly, as always, good luck to the gaffer and his team in this afternoon’s EFL league 2 fixture. Hopefully we can continue our good form and finish the season as strongly as possible.

In recent weeks, we have narrowly lost 1-0 to Tottenham Hotspur and 2-0 against Manchester City. Both having world class training facilities and excellent sides. We also welcomed Leicester City to the Lamex Stadium where the Gaffer gave our academy lads the opportunity to play on the main pitch. We came away 2-1 winners after going a goal down. Alfie Williams and Dom Sadi scored for us. Dom was a trialist on the day before being offered a scholarship for seasons 2021-23. Dom is a ex West Ham United schoolboy who we are excited about.

The value in playing opposition of this calibre gives us all the opportunity to be tested against the best and it’s testament to our academy players for the performances and results. A number of years ago we would not have got these fixture and the scorelines could have been heavier. This shows how far we’ve come but also give us all even more ambition to progress further and ‘go again’.

As always there have been difficult decisions to make with other players who have not been offered a professional contract but the lads not offered will be offered further opportunities within the club and we will do our very best to support them during there next steps.

STEVENAGE FC WOMEN APPOINT KARL DAVY AS NEW FIRST TEAM MANAGER

S

tevenage FC Women are delighted to confirm the appointment of Karl Davy as the new first team manager.

Karl leaves his former post as manager of Charlton Women’s U21s team to take over from Mark Dicker who resigned earlier this year.

During his time at Charlton, Karl oversaw the rebuild of the U21s at the Club, creating a squad that, until the season was curtailed, were unbeaten.

Karl previously spent time at Lewes FC in the women’s pathway, as well as a period in charge of the Sussex FA Women’s Representative team.

‘We’re delighted to have appointed Karl as the Stevenage Women first team manager,” said Dani Toyn, Stevenage FC Women General Manager. “Karl stood out during a competitive interview process as someone who we believed had a clear plan for the future, a wealth of knowledge within the women’s game and a desire to

be involved with Stevenage FC Women.

“Karl’s appointment is the first step in a new chapter for us and we’re really confident that Karl’s aspirations for the club align with those of the Foundation and are thoroughly looking forward to working with him to push this club forward.”

WELCOME CLUB MATTERS The Mansfield Town we know today trace their founding to 1897, although their Field Mill ground is now the oldest venue in the Football League hosting football, dating to 1861.

At that stage it hosted various local clubs and sports including cricket and cycle racing.

As a non-league club the Stags took up residency at the ground (currently named the One Call Stadium) in 1921 and following

a powerful spell in non-league and some FA Cup success they were elected to the Football League Division Three South in 1931.

There was to be little movement until 1960 when the Stags were relegated to the new Division Four. They hit the headlines in 1969 when a 3-0 win over West Ham saw them reach the FA Cup quarter-finals before losing to eventual runners-up Leicester City.

The 1976-77 season saw Mansfield storm to the title in the third tier and the following campaign was their only season to date in the second tier. Although they finished one from bottom and were relegated, they enjoyed home and away draws with Spurs.

a penalty shoot-out at Wembley after their success over Bristol City following a 1-1 draw in the Football League Trophy.

The Stags were a yo-yo side in the bottom two divisions until poor ownership eventually saw them lose their 77-year football League status in 2008. After five seasons in the non league wilderness they made a dramatic return. Mid-table in January 2013, they lost 2-1 to Liverpool in the FA Cup to a controversial Luis Suarez goal, before winning 20 of their last 24 league games to secure top spot.

Since their promotion Mansfield have played in the fourth tier.

THE BOSS Nigel Clough took over in November 2020 after spells in charge of Derby County, Sheffield United and Burton Albion.

As a player, he made over 300 appearances for Nottingham Forest, becoming the second highest scorer in Forest’s history, before moving to Liverpool in 1993. He was also with Manchester City and Burton Albion as a player, and earned 14 caps for England.

His managerial career started with non-league Burton Albion in 1998 and the Brewers were on course to earn promotion to the Football League for the first time in their history in the 2008/09 season, as Clough led them to the top of the Conference table. He moved to Championship outfit Derby County in 2009, leaving a table-topping Burton side who would eventually go on to secure their Football League status in that season.

Clough finished 14th in his first full term at the Rams and in 2011/12, he led them to their best start to a season in 106 years, as they began their campaign with four victories from four.

He joined Sheffield United in 2013, and they ended the campaign seventh in League One and also became the first third-tier side to reach the semi-finals of the FA Cup since 2001.

Clough returned to Burton Albion in 2015, guiding the Brewers to the Championship for the first time in their history.

WATCH OUT FOR - JAMES PERCH Former Premier League footballer James Perch signed a one-year contract at One Call Stadium in August 2020.

Mansfield-born, Perch has amassed over 500 career appearances, the 34-year-old starting his career at Nottingham Forest, where he enjoyed promotion from League One in 2008, and made over 200 appearances before signing for Newcastle United in July 2010, for a fee believed to be £1.5 million.

The versatile player made 80 appearances for the Toon before switching to Wigan Athletic in July 2013 and helping the club to an FA Cup semi-final in his first season as well as scoring in the Latics’ Championship play-off semi-final second leg against QPR. Perch enjoyed three seasons in the Championship at Loftus Road and signed for Scunthorpe United in 2018.

FOOTBALL’S MAGNA CARTA The National Football Museum in Manchester has announced its reopening date on May 27th. To celebrate both the reopening and its 20th anniversary, the museum plans to display the Football Association’s most treasured artifact – The very first handwritten Laws of the Game.

Drafted in 1863, the tome contains the very first laws of football – the origins of the global sport played and watched by millions of fans today. It is the most significant book related to football. In a sense, the ‘Magna Carta’ of the beautiful game.

ARTEFACT For the last home game (v. Bradford) you may recall I published a copy of an old Stevenage programme depicting a match against Spurs.

A consequence of this article prompted a long-time Boro fan to get in touch with me to inform that he was the proud owner of that very programme. Moreover, he corrected me, citing that the match actually took place in 1947, not 1945 as I had mistakenly depicted.

Several years ago, this same fan also donated his Boro scrap-books to the archive, for which I was most grateful to receive and will reiterate again so today. In his email to me, he also sent me the image of another old programme. This one is Hertford v.

Stevenage, dated 1923.

It goes without saying that I was absolutely delighted to see such an ancient memento, and to know that it is in the safe care of an enthusiastic collector.

Stevenage won this Amateur Cup game 2-1 with a goal apiece from Watson and Jones.
