would like to extend a warm Stevenage welcome to Michael and everyone connected with Grimsby Town Football Club today. Welcome. There are many qualities that are in the make-up of successful groups and I am a believer that a key point of difference for any group that wants to be successful is their ability to learn quicker than the opposition. Up until half time at Colchester I felt we had shown improvement from game-to-game, slowly learning what it is going to take for us to be successful. After conceding a minute after half-time, our levels in every area at Colchester weren’t good enough. Yes, there was a lack of confidence given the team hasn’t won for a long time but we have to be more resilient in every aspect. We weren’t and that hurt us all. Tuesday was the reaction we wanted. The players showed they have the ability to learn quickly and put in the lessons of an honest and long meeting on Monday. The performance from everyone on Tuesday was outstanding. It is the type of team that I firmly believe is in our DNA - young, athletic and hungry players supported by a spine of senior players leading the way. It was a thoroughly deserved win and a performance full of what we want to be as a team moving forward. We know we need to build on that performance and result today. Grimsby are an excellent team who have grown this season with some smart recruitment and excellent coaching. We know we will need to be at our best today to win. We must look to build on the positives from Tuesday and continue to show those

levels of energy, discipline, freshness and that mentality to fight for every ball. Today is also our annual Academy Day. I am looking forward to getting up to Shephalbury to watch the U18s before our match here at The Lamex Stadium. We have already seen a number of Academy players progress through to the senior squad this season, it is a real credit to Robbie and the team not only the high number of quality players we are producing but how they are all well rounded young men. It really is a fantastic programme right at the heart of our football club. I hope as many of you supporters can join me at the game this morning to support our young players. Thank you to the supporters who followed the team on Tuesday it was fantastic to see our fans behind the goal. Today is another big one and we need a real collective effort to get us over the line and up and running in the “W” column in the league. Let’s have all our focus on this match and doing all we can to get behind the players. www.stevenagefc.com | 5

A

warm welcome to the directors, officials, players and supporters of Grimsby Town. I hope you enjoy your stay with us and have a safe journey home. Our fine win at Wycombe on Tuesday night kicked the elephant out of the room – now we have our first win under our belt we can focus on the league. I can’t believe I’m saying that with the quality we have in our squad, but it has been a really bizarre start to a season. Not only did we have up to 10 senior players unavailable for certain games through injuries, having to play a 17-year-old and 18-year-old old pairing at centre back as our 4 centre halves were injured, but we were also without a physio and of course we brought the managers’ reign to an end, which is always difficult. The win at Wycombe showed what we are all about. The fighting spirit was back, the resilience was back and the quality was back. Things seem to be turning, we have a new physio starting on Monday and have strengthened the sports science department. Senior lads are coming back at the rate of one a week and I’d hope to see Joel Byrom back in the squad this weekend, leaving TVC, Charlie Lakin, Paul Digby, Danny Newton and Dean Parrett unavailable with Luther being 50/50 at the time of writing. That’s still a long list of players that you would expect to be in our 18 and arguably in our starting eleven, but it’s way better than it’s been. Injuries are part of the game though and one man’s disappointment is another’s opportunity. There can be no better example of this than Jason Cowley. He waited for his chance to grab a shirt and has recently scored 3 goals in 3 starts. Stevenage FC v Grimsby Town

Those that have spoken to Jason know this isn’t a surprise – his determination is as fierce as any I’ve seen and he’s totally focused on taking this chance and using it to make his life better. Others in the squad have this exact same opportunity – Charlie Carter has the chance to make a shirt his own before senior players return and turn the glimpses of fantastic talent we see into a resilient, professional level of performance that could change his life. Young Jamie Fielding did well on Tuesday night and if he’s selected this is another that can seize the opportunity to make an impact in professional football. All of these lads have been taken from non league in the summer and all of them have the stage now to become top pros. This is a huge game for us and the fans’ support will be crucial so let’s hear you cheer us on to another win. Enjoy the game. www.stevenagefc.com | 7

FROM THE

ARCHIVES

O

ur archive programme for this edition takes us all the way back to 1989 and a full 30 years ago when the boys of Broadhall Way were getting ready for the climb up the non league pyramid. In their second of three seasons in the Vauxhall Opel League Division Two North, Boro started well and with victory in this game, recorded four league successes in the first 7 matches. In a team which featured such names as Graham Cox, Paul Palma, Noel Blackwell and Gary Bambrick, it was a Dave Smith strike which went on to settle this clash between these two sides and see the home team move further up the league.

STEVENAGE FC

ACADEMY WELCOME TO TODAY’S GAME AGAINST GRIMSBY TOWN. These notes are coming from a different viewpoint from my last programme notes as a first team player. I joined the Academy as the U18 Coach in the summer following 13 successful years as a player and am very excited about the future and my involvement in influencing the young players’ development. I have found the transition from first team player to Academy coach a smooth process as all the staff, and players, have made me feel very welcome and I would like to thank them for this. The first few months have been challenging as working with Academy players you need to be very patient and understand all of their individual needs.

JACK SMITH “I joined as an U16 player and had lots of great experiences. I have worked with some great people including Alex and Ronnie and I would like to thank them for my opportunity and I am looking forward to the future”. Working with Alex Revell has made things a lot easier as we both know what it takes to become a professional footballer along with the guidance of Academy Manager Robbie O’Keefe and Stevenage FC v Grimsby Town

LUIS FERNANDEZ “I joined as an U13 player and from the day I came into the club I felt very welcomed and I knew it was the place where I wanted to stay for a long while. I knew there was a secure pathway through the system if I gave it my all”. Head of Coaching Stephen Payne. Our objective is to produce footballers for the first team, ahead of results in the Youth Alliance League, which sometimes can be difficult as I have come from an environment when winning is a must. The players are learning every day and improving. Two players that have made the step up to the first team so far this season are Luis Fernandez and Jack Smith who have taken it in their stride and have both made League appearances. This is their first step to becoming a Professional Footballer but they still have a long way to go. I think the future is bright for the Academy and I am looking forward to being a part of it as long as possible and continue to see Academy graduates progress into the first team or that step further to the Premier League. I hope you enjoy the game and please get behind the lads!!

STEVENAGE FC WOMEN 1 PETERBOROUGH WOMEN 2 WOMEN’S FA CUP On Sunday we hosted Peterborough Women in the FA Cup, a competition which everyone wants to do well in. Indeed we started the game on the front foot, creating several chances, but we were just unable to make one of them count. As often happens in these situations we were then punished for not taking our chances and conceded against the run of play. At half-time we went in 1-0 down and were ruing the chances which we had missed, we understood that we just needed to be patient and a little more clinical. The second half was similar to the first in that we couldn’t quite put the finishing touches on our attacking play in the final third. But just as it appeared that we wouldn’t get back into the game Cara Breckenridge found the bottom corner with a very good strike to draw us level. Unfortunately we couldn’t push on to get another and Peterborough got their second with about 15 mins to go to seal the win. This was a tough result to take, but congratulations to Peterborough on the win. We regroup and go again. Stevenage FC v Grimsby Town

SUPPORTERS ASSOCIATION

LATEST NEWS WELCOME This afternoon we are delighted to welcome the team, officials, fans and supporters from Grimsby. The Mariners Trust has recently been very active in the Fans for Diversity initiative. Their efforts have not gone unrecognised and the Mariners were recently nominated for an FSA award for League 2 – along with supporters’ groups representing Tranmere Rovers, Lincoln City and Port Vale. As the Boro’s delegate to the FSA, it has been my pleasure to know Grimsby’s fans’ champion Kristine Green, whose efforts in getting the best deal for supporters of ALL clubs is unsurpassed. The Mariners are most fortunate to have such an enthusiastic and competent individual in their midst.

FOOTBALL SUPPORTERS’ ASSOCIATION (FSA) The FSA has commented on the recent publication by the Home Office regarding football-related arrests and banning orders. It was pleased to note that footballrelated arrests recorded across the 201819 season demonstrated a 10% decrease on the previous season. Football-related arrests are now at record lows, with just 3.3 arrests per 100,000 spectators – comparing very favourably to other large-scale public events. “It’s reassuring to see this long-term downward trend continue,” says the FSA’s Amanda Jacks. “These figures show what match-going supporters know instinctively – that the overwhelming majority of games pass without significant incident.” Poignantly, it was League 2 which Stevenage FC v Grimsby Town

achieved the best improvement, with a 56% reduction in incidents (120) compared to the previous season (214).

As at August 2019: 1,771 football banning orders in force Of which 31% (549) issued in 2018/19

Almost all football banning orders were issued to males (1,765).

Steady decline in football banning orders in force since 2011.

18-34s were the age group with the highest number of football banning orders.

19% (+89) increase in new football banning orders imposed.

SA COMMITTEE MEETING The next meeting of the Supporters’ Association committee is scheduled for this coming Thursday (17th). If you have anything that you wish to have raised at this meeting, then don’t hesitate to contact a committee member (who can be found all around the stadium on match days – just ask) or contact the SA via email at mervyn@sfcsa.co.uk

WELCOME

JAMES MCKEOWN

WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT OUR OPPOSITION‌ Grimsby are now into their fourth season in Sky Bet League Two, after they defeated fellow League rivals Forest Green Rovers 3-1 in the 2016 National League Play-Off Final. On their return, the club finished in a respectable 14th place with 61 points but were almost relegated in the 2017/18 season when they picked up ten points in their final four games to stay up.

ETHAN ROBSON

LATEST FORM‌ The Mariners have had a strong start to their campaign, and currently occupy 9th spot with five wins and three draws in their 12 games. They have been inconsistent of late with just two wins in their last six games, including a 7-1 hammering away at Chelsea in the Carabao Cup. One of those wins did include a 3-1 away victory against promotion hopefuls Exeter City, but they were unable to back that result up at home to Mansfield, when the away side brought misery to Blundell Park as Krystian Pearce scored a 96th minute winner.

JAMES HANSON

STAR MAN‌ Experienced striker James Hanson was nominated the League Two Player of the Month in August after bagging five goals and creating three assists for The Mariners. The 31-yearold signed a two-year deal at the club this season after leaving AFC Wimbledon in the league above He started his professional career at Bradford City and scored over 70 goals for the club; was a part of their famous 2013 League Cup run that ended with a 5-0 defeat against Swansea City in the final. Hanson picked a League One winners medal whilst at Sheffield United in 2016/17 but only lasted another season at Brammall Lane before being let go on a free transfer.

MICHAEL JOLLEY

THE GAFFER‌ After a 20-game winless run, Michael Jolley replaced Russell Slade as manager in March 2018 and had 10 games to keep the Club in League Two. Grimsby went on to pick up 15 points and finished five points above the relegation zone in 18th. Jolley did not have an eventful playing career in which he played for Cambridge University. Before taking the Grimsby job, he was appointed head coach of AFC Eskilstuna who were bottom of the Swedish League and was unable to keep the team in the top flight. He has also managed Stirling University, Scotland Universities Team and Burnley U23
