ood afternoon and welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Colchester United. Our first home game of the decade I hope will be remembered for a win. We’ve not had many of those this season and if we can start scoring goals we can change that. Too many times now I’ve come away from a game angry and frustrated that the opposition scored in extra time. But if we’d scored a few goals during those games it wouldn’t be of any relevance. Our problem hasn’t been defending, our problem has been our inability to score and to change that we need to change some fundamentals. Support at home has always been important too and this Stevenage FC v Colchester United
is when our core supporter base can help. This is when we all need to work harder to get people to games and anyone reading this can help by fighting for our club and coming to games to support the lads. As you can see, we’re slowly increasing the north stand capacity and I hope all those that have used the new stand so far are pleased with the better facilities available. Work on the bar area continues and we expect to be close to opening by the end of the month. Back to the match - we will strengthen in this window and we will get out of this position and lay a foundation for next season. Your support will be invaluable. Enjoy the game! www.stevenagefc.com | 7

t was 20 years ago, almost to the day, when Rushden & Diamonds came to play. And what a mixed season we’d already had. New boss Richard Hill started with 6 straight wins but a slump in form saw him lose his job as Boro’s new chairman Phil Wallace eased into his role. Boro had lost 2-1 just a week earlier in the reverse fixture and couldn’t get revenge here as they were held to the draw.

ON THIS DAY Saturday January 4, 1997 Stevenage 0 Birmingham 2 What a day! With snow on the ground Boro made their first foray into the FA Cup Third round with a ‘home’ tie at St Andrews. The reigning Conference champs were in the thick of another season of promise but this was to be their first major disappointment of the campaign, Sodje, Hayles et al tried their best in front of a 15,000 crowd but the Blues proved just too good. ACADEMY
W
ith the scholars returning from their short Christmas break and the schoolboys enjoying a longer than usual break it was good to get some downtime for the staff and have them back ready and refreshed for the second half of the season. This is the time of season where eyes start to turn more diligently, if thats possible, on the future of our 2nd year scholars. Without the luxury of an U23 squad we have to make early decisions on scholars who, in most instances, are still nowhere near their full potential. With 3 x 2nd year scholars already awarded young professional contracts in a normal season you would think that we would be done however we have, we believe, a really good crop of young players and we need to make sure we make the right decisions on all our scholars. Players all have different routes to get to their final destination and no two journeys are the same. Some will be kept in the building and developed within our environment and some will go out on loan to gain some senior experience.
Stevenage FC v Colchester United
Loans are always particularly difficult as we have to make sure everything fits the player in question. It’s not just about getting senior match experience, it’s making sure the team suits the player, the coaching and managing staff understand what the player needs to get out of the loan and also we have to understand what the club we loan to are wanting. Currently we have both Jamie Jellis and Joe Leslie out on loan, at Hitchin and Biggleswade FC respectively and both are doing great at the moment. Having clubs local also helps in terms of getting to watch the boys play and over the next few weeks we hope to get one or two more boys out on loan to further their football education and experience before making final decisions. All of these type of events are part and parcel of the Academy life and something we have really improved on over the past few seasons and hopefully we can continue to produce players for the 1st team on a regular basis Happy New Year!

FOUNDATION
appy New Year to you all and on behalf of the Foundation I’d like to wish you the very best for 2020 and beyond. A new year will always bring a level of optimism and the Foundation is no different, with new plans, ideas, projects and initiatives to bring to our community. One key thing for us is to continue to establish ourselves as a charitable organisation, improving awareness of our work and the offer that we provide to the community utilising the power of the football club and EFL’s brand. Over the course of this year you’ll start to see more stories about the people that have attended one of our sessions or projects as well as the staff that deliver them, to give you an idea of the impact we are having on our community as well as potentially making you aware of ways in which you might be able to get involved with us or support us in other ways. In 2020 we are looking to increase awareness of our work with the launch of a new promotional video, including shorter videos linked to specific sessions and projects like Active Tots, Walking Football, PL Kicks, NCS and some of our schools’ work. We’ve been delighted to be working with local video production company Hitchin TV on this and are very excited to show you the finished article. We will also be continuing to deliver big events this year with the ever popular Golf Day returning later in the year as well as the Ken Headington Memorial Cup, our walking football tournament held in memory of our former Foundation coach and lynchpin of local football in and around Stevenage. Dates for both of these events will be announced soon. This coming Tuesday, Marriotts School Stevenage FC v Colchester United
will be heading to Luton to represent the Foundation and Club at the regional playoff for the EFL Trust Utilita Girls’ Cup with a place in the next round up for grabs. This competition is a great opportunity for young players and the chance to play in the final at Wembley Stadium is something we hope to achieve this year. Our schools’ work remains a fundamental part of what we do here at the Foundation, and we are aiming to increase the number of schools that we have developed partnerships within the coming months. Already at 26 primary schools, all of whom are able to access exclusive ticket offers for the new North Stand, and you would have seen more and more first team players getting out to our sessions and projects to inspire participants and learn more about what we do as a charity. Over the coming match days you’ll hear more from the rest of the team about their work, and in the meantime if you’d like to know more about what Stevenage FC Foundation does as the official charity of Stevenage Football Club then please head over to our website – www.stevenagefcfoundation.com

S
ince being involved in women’s football for the last two years I’ve seen a massive growth in all aspects of the game. Things such as TV coverage, female players becoming full time players and most important of all the participation of younger girls getting involved has been huge. It goes from strength to strength, but there is still so much more to come and so much more that can be done. For us, Stevenage FC Women as a club, are trying to get things in place not just for the present players, but also the future players of the game. The Stevenage FC Foundation now have a Girls GDC set up, recently they had a Utilita Cup which see 13 teams from local schools playing in a competition at the Academy, over 90 girls were in attendance for this. It’s definitely going in the right direction but at the level we are at in the WNL it’s the financial side of things that can be the downfall of some clubs. Everyone at Stevenage FC Women coach or staff wise are all voluntary and the players are having to pay to play. There is a huge market for Women’s football at the minute and it’s being taken to the next level at the higher standards, but I feel there is huge opportunities still to promote and really push the lowers league levels and grassroots side of the game on. I look to even more progress in 2020 and thank you all for your current support.

SUPPORTERS ASSOCIATION
LATEST NEWS WELCOME
DAVE CURRY
Happy New Year to all our readers. This afternoon we welcome the fans and supporters of Colchester United here at The Lamex. The Colchester United Supporters’ Association (CUSA) were formed in 2005 and it gives me great pleasure to welcome their chairman, Jon Burns and his committee comprising Malcolm Cole, Michael Heaps and Jackie Anderson, to our little corner of Hertfordshire.
The Supporters’ Association also mourn the passing of Dave Curry. Dave was an ardent Boro fan and sold match-day programmes in the stadium for very many years. Our thoughts and prayers go out the friends and families of both Billy and Dave at this sad time.
The membership of our Supporters’ Association currently numbers just over 500. Imagine how astounded I was to see the membership of Colchester United’s in the accompanying archive photo which appears on CUSA’s website. An incredible 16,728. I don’t know when the photograph was taken (obviously way before the Health & Safety at Work Act came into being) but what a fantastic artefact to illustrate times gone by.
BILLY BANNISTER It is with deep sadness that we learn of the recent passing of Billy Bannister. Billy played for Stevenage Town and went on to coach the Stevenage Borough junior sides during the 1980’s and 1990’s. Billy’s funeral was at St Joseph’s church last Monday and I hope to compose a more comprehensive obituary in our forthcoming programme for the fixture v. Port Vale. Stevenage FC v Colchester United

WELCOME
Under former manager Phil Parkinson, the team were promoted to the Championship for the first time in their history after finishing in second place on 79 points in 2006, three points above Brentford. The following year, Colchester finished in their highest league position in their history in 10th place. This season, the U’s turned into Premier League giant killers after defying the odds and reaching the Carabao Cup Quarter-Finals by knocking out Tottenham Hotspur and Crystal Palace on penalties, before being beaten by Manchester United at Old Trafford.
LATEST FORM… THE BASICS… The U’s are now into their fourth season in Sky Bet League Two following their relegation in 2016 where the Club returned to the Division for the first time in 13 years.
32 | www.stevenagefc.com
The U’s look set for a Play-Off finish having not been able to break into the top seven since their return. The team had to wait until their fifth game in the league until they picked up their first win against Northampton (1-0).
Stevenage FC v Colchester United
TOM EASTMAN
Since then, they have only lost another three games – with their last defeat coming in October when they lost 1-0 at home to relegation threatened Morecambe. In their last game, Colchester started the New year with a frustrating 1-1 draw at home to Crawley as captain Luke Prosser put through his own goal as three points slipped out of their hands.
STAR MAN… Tom Eastman has been a fan favourite at the JobServe Community Stadium since joining from rivals Ipswich Town on a free transfer in 2011. The centre-back has been ever present in defence for the Club with over 300 appearances, with this season being no different having played every game in League Two so far – scoring two goals – including one in the reverse fixture in October against Stevenage.
The 28-year-old has won various individual accolades whilst at the Club after picking up the 2010/11 Young Player of the Season and Player of the Season in 2013/14, 2014/15 and 2017/18
JOHN MCGREAL
THE GAFFER… John McGreal was appointed Head Coach after taking over from Kevin Keen following their relegation from League One in 2016. In his first managerial role, McGreal joined Colchester in 2009 as the academy’s Professional Development Coach and would go onto be the Club’s Under 18s Manager and led the side to the Football league Youth South East Title and Youth Alliance Cup. The former Defender started his career as Tranmere Rovers and went onto to play for Ipswich, before finishing his career at Burnley where he hung up his boots in 2007. by Taylor Catton Stevenage FC v Colchester United
