MARK BONNER ———— HEAD COACH ———— We come into this afternoon after the disappointment of Tuesday night. I should make clear it’s a frustration with the result against Scunthorpe and the fact we came away with nothing from a game that being frank, we dominated in very much the way we had set out to do prior to kick off. The game plan, the way the players performed was exactly what we asked them to do. The statistics on the night reflected a high level of performance, as did the post-match comments of the opposing away Manager Neil Cox. On another day, we probably win that game comfortably given the control we had and the number of entries we made into the final third, where we had a high number of good quality of chances on goal or opportunities to create more chances on goal with an extra pass. But the matter of the fact is the result was a loss, in a game we should never in a million years lose. We all know that. But we also know there’s little use in dwelling on that or the points that could have been, other than to focus our attention on this next game making the necessary steps to give ourselves the best chance of taking the points that are still available to us. In the last two home games, we’ve lost narrowly in matches that we certainly shouldn’t have done. That’s frustrating because we’ve created enough chances in both of those games to earn a better points return. We’ve seen that done so well throughout this season from this team, who have found ways to churn out results in games that we’ve probably had less control over than in our previous two home games. So there’s area for improvement to show that ruthlessness in the moments where we’re on top of a game and convert the way we’re impacting a match positively onto the scoreline. We can remain confident that this is just a www.cambridge-united.co.uk

BROUGHT TO YOU BY

part of the natural swing and flow of a full Sky Bet League Two season, and we know this team is most certainly capable of scoring goals because we’ve seen them do it so regularly thus far. They are continuing to create chances, and therefore we can be confident that whilst you do that as a side, the ball will drop for you again for us to take advantage of those key moments in a game. The players in this team don’t like losing matches, there is hurt in the dressing room when they do. And angry players, eager to bounce back is never a bad thing when you’re asking them to bring an intensity every day to training and on a matchday. We are hopeful that reflects in our performance today against Walsall. United in Endeavour. ■

Ian Mather ———— CEO ———— Welcome to Walsall and their new Head Coach, Brian Dutton. It is good to see another talented young coach stepping up to the top job and I wish him well for the rest of the season, starting next week! As we can all see this season we have had, and will continue to have, some odd results. Clearly the one on Tuesday was tough to take as we enjoyed so much of the play. Sometimes the unexpected happens. I guess that is part of why we all love football. Time to move on and look forward. Looking forward is my theme for today, specifically in relation to our hopes for a new stadium and how we need to continue to look after the Abbey. There have been many false dawns on the road to a new home for the U’s. We are as keen as ever to build a new stadium. It would not only be a huge asset to help our club progress through the 21st century but it would be great for the city and wider region to have a substantial and sustainable multi-use site. For the moment the matter is out of our hands whilst the City and South Cambridgeshire Planning Authority consider what land, if any, is to be released from the Green Belt. The site for a new stadium is very much part of the plans being considered. As the May council elections get closer do ask candidates on your doorstep whether they will support the plan by Marshall for a development which would allow for our new stadium. Your voice matters in this. We expect the initial decision on which proposals are approved in the Autumn followed by further public consultation. I wish it could all happen sooner but we do not set the timetable. This is a huge decision for the area and it is right that it is done carefully. In the meantime, we must, and we will, maintain the Abbey. Some of the improvements we have made in the last year or so are easy to spot: Top of the list was tarmacking Cut Throat Lane. This was long overdue and has made a big difference to the approach to the ground. We now have a next www.cambridge-united.co.uk

home fixture board (organised by CUSP). Less obvious is the work done to repair faults on the roof of the Mead & Plant Stand. Next on the agenda is major renovation on our magnificent floodlight towers, the tallest in England I understand. This is due to start on 12 April and will be the most comprehensive maintenance work they will have undergone since 1981. In the summer the pitch will have a lot of work done on it to restore it to one of the best playing surfaces in the league. We are also looking at putting in place scoreboards by next season. We are planning for the future. For now, the focus is three points and an entertaining afternoon. Enjoy the game. ■

TODAY’S VISITORS ———— WALSALL FC ———— “A hard earned point, real men, rolling their sleeves up and fighting for the badge” – Walsall Manager Brian Dutton’s take on the midweek draw at Exeter – and in a way that’s been the Saddler’s season in a nutshell. Steady enough but unspectacular. There have been highlights of course – the 3-1 victory at Tranmere, the home win against Bolton, but the West Midlands side haven’t quite managed to put a sustained run together to challenge for the top seven. It was a similar story last term, the Saddlers finished the curtailed season comfortably

around mid-table, a long way clear of trouble, two places above the U’s but 11 points short of the coveted positions. A lack of clean sheets has been the problem of late, but with that particular demon put to rest on Tuesday night, Dutton’s side now have a platform from which to build.

THE FORM

Walsall have built a reputation as draw specialists this term. 14 times in the league this season, the Saddlers have ended the game all square, no team in the division has CAMBRIDGE UNITED F.C. V WALSALL F.C.

9 shared the points on more occasions. Tuesday’s stalemate at Exeter ended a sequence of back to back defeats, and secured a first clean sheet since November 3rd after a run of 21 league matches without one. The bigger picture is just one win in 12 matches, that victory coming at Port Vale in January, five of those 12 games ended all square. Away from home, Walsall have managed just three victories, with those wins coming at Tranmere, Oldham and Port Vale, with the Saddlers scoring three goals on each occasion. Overall, their league record this season reads: Played 31, Won 8, Drawn 14, and Lost 9.

THE MANAGER – BRIAN DUTTON

Dutton was promoted to the role of Head Coach last month following the departure

of Darrell Clarke to Port Vale. The 35 year old had worked as Clarke’s assistant at former Club Bristol Rovers, before both men made the move to the Banks’s Stadium. Dutton is embarking on his first senior Head Coach role following a long playing career. The 35 year old was a versatile defender, who could play in a number of other positions and had a brief spell at the Abbey in the early 2000’s. He went on to represent, among others, Weymouth, Eastleigh, Salisbury and Harrogate Town. His competitive record since taking the Saddlers hotseat reads: Played 5, Won 0, Drawn 2, Lost 3■

HARRISON DUNK ———— PLAYER INTERVIEW ———— You just don’t teach an old Dunk new tricks! United’s longest serving current player, Harrison Dunk, is determined to round off a consistent TENTH season in amber and black positively. The U’s veteran is enjoying his most reliable run in the side for many a season - set to make his 40th appearance of 20/21 this afternoon – and proving to be a real stalwart at left back for Mark Bonner’s familiar back four. Dunk says he’s revelled in the opportunity to shake off recent injury laden seasons and is hopeful of contributing his best performances right through to May. “I really want to finish the season strongly,” he said. “I’ve had some injury issues over the past years at the Club that have killed my season a little bit. I was a bit in and out of the side, and on the bench because of those setbacks. “That’s not been the case this year I feel I’ve had a good run. I hope that’s showed up in my performances and I want carry that on.” Dunk doesn’t hide away from the fact Tuesday’s home loss to Scunthorpe stung in the home dressing room post-match, given the way the U’s dominated the match in so many areas, but he’s quick to point out the side know how to move on and have efficiently refocused. “We were obviously very disappointed, but we can’t dwell on it. It’s quickly been about how we can rebound. On another night we could have scored two or three goals and would have become quite an easy match, but it wasn’t to be and that game is done now. “There are still a lot of games to go before the end of the season, and we won’t know for certain exactly the importance of each result until the end of the season. “I’m sure there will be more results like that (Tuesday’s defeat to Scunthorpe) before the end of the season, just as other teams around us will drop points. That’s just going to happen, and it’s going to come down to who can get their consistency until the end of the season.” The defeat to the Iron knocked United off www.cambridge-united.co.uk

League Two’s top spot for the first time since mid-January, but Dunk feels it’s wasted energy for the team to concern themselves with League positioning at the current time. With an unrelenting fixture schedule and plenty of action before the business end of the campaign comes to a close, the 30-year old says the U’s must only attend to putting further points on the board on a game to game basis and letting the table take care of itself. “We’ve still got to play all the bigger teams around us still, so there’s a long way to go and it’s in our own hands in that regard. “We’ve got games Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday. It’s relentless, but it’s relentless for everyone so all you can do is keep going and keep putting as many points on the board. And where we end up is where we end up. “Nobody expects us to be up there, so we don’t feel the pressure to win the League or anything like that because on paper we probably shouldn’t. We expected the table to change and it will do again before the end of the season. We just have to carry on as we have been doing and hope we end the season well.”■

MEMORIES DOWN ———— CUT THROAT LANE ———— Good afternoon everybody and particularly our visitors from the old saddle-making town of Walsall. Been a while I suspect since a saddle was assembled in or anywhere near the town, the leather symbol disappeared from the club’s badge a long while ago but, thankfully, the nickname remains. And if my memory serves me correctly I was once served the finest pint of Mild ever imbibed in that town, again I suspect if it’s still around then it is not what it was. I stand to be corrected though...

THE OLD CUT THROAT LANE MEANDER TODAY REVEALS AN INTERESTING FIXTURE PLAYED OUT ON 6 MARCH 1990 AND THE ‘STONES FROM KENT WERE IN TOWN Starting to pen these notes before the Scunny game I was hoping that “we are still top of the league then” would be a given but not so. The mini Tuesday curse has struck again. I hear sales of worry beads have increased again in Barnwell, Romsey and outlying villages. Fear not, and stay together in endeavour. The old Cut Throat Lane meander today reveals an interesting fixture played out on 6 March 1990 and the ‘Stones from Kent were in town. Little did we know it but this was actually the footballing equivalent of “hors d’oeuvres” and the main course and dessert were to follow in May in the form of the renownedly ‘dreaded’ promotion playoffs, and the dessert didn’t even take place in Maidstone! We won the March portion 2-0 in front of 4,464 (oh for a crowd) with goals from Dublin, both in the first half. Suite (sic). That evening’s programme is included today for your delectation, note the cover price of 80p, that’s well over £3 in today’s money. A quick glance at the lineups reveals a certain Steve Butler (bless) and www.cambridge-united.co.uk

Ken Charlery (non-bless) in the Kent side’s forward line. Having drawn away in the previous September and knocked them out of the League Cup over two legs early doors we have never lost against Maidstone... that is an indelible fact as that dire Sunday afternoon in the FA Cup back in December 1986 has been wiped from all statistics and records relating in any way to CUFC. In fact it was probably Carlisle or Colchester involved. In other news, on this day in 1836 the Battle of the Alamo took place. Let’s hope Davy Crockett is wearing a Saddlers’ shirt this afternoon! Enjoy the game and stay safe. Bye for now. ■

CFU CORNER ———— Ben Phillips ———— I would like to start today’s article by talking about how important buying your ifollow pass is to watch the U’s in action this season. While it’s not how we would all like to watch Mark Bonner’s side in action, I do feel it has being a godsend for fans with us not being able to attend matches in person. Our fans should be praised massively for the support you have all shown throughout the season in buying a match pass and backing the boys on the pitch. Keep buying your Ifollow match passes and get behind the U’s, your support is massively appreciated by everyone at Cambridge United. The revenue generated by Ifollow match passes is crucial for football league clubs in the current climate and has helped them make up some of the deficit lost from normal match day revenue. The pandemic has had severe impacts on football clubs though and there will be a lot of clubs, especially at grassroots and nonleague level who will be struggling financially from the current situation in the pandemic. With the government’s latest announcement and Boris Johnson’s roadmap plan on restrictions being lifted, we can now see some form of light at the end of the tunnel on what has being a difficult period for everyone. Sadly though it looks increasingly likely that we will not see fans attending fixtures for the rest of the current football season. The Abbey isn’t the same without fans on a match day, matches being played in empty stadiums is a strange feeling and big loss. Everybody at CFU is looking forward to the new season already and the welcoming return of fans and the abbey stadium coming alive and a hive of activity once more on a match day. We are pleased to inform you that we are working on a number of exciting changes that will enhance the match day experience and benefit the U’s fans for the new season.

www.cambridge-united.co.uk

We are excited to announce that through Cambridge United Lottery, which is attached and works closely with CFU we will soon be arranging the installation of some new scoreboards within the Abbey stadium at the Newmarket Road end & the South stand sections of the ground. This has been funded by the Cambridge United Lottery, a weekly lottery prize draw where fans can sign up and win cash prizes. In return for the money raised from Lottery members playing, it’s reinvested into the football club to help fund improvements for fans around the stadium & to fund initiatives within the local abbey ward area. They have contributed significant contributions to the football club and funded a host of different things now. Cambridge United Lottery would like to achieve funding for even further projects & the more members we have sign up to play, the more projects we can fund to help enhance the match day experience. If you fancy a flutter then find out more details on how to sign up and play here; www.cufclottery.co.uk Members of the CFU Committee are also working hard closely with Ian Mather and local authorities & Police to see about the possibility of having alcohol sold within the north terrace, (NRE) on a match day and hope to get their proposal approved by the authorities in time for welcoming new fans back for next season. We are also exploring & working with the football club on making provisions for an area of seating for the elderly and vulnerable who would like to attend the Abbey on a match day. We hope to bring more news on these projects and others soon. As a supporters trust I would like fans & our current members to know that we are being proactive and are actively looking to make changes for fans and the wider community. ■ United in Endeavour

Around the Division ———— LEAGUE TWO ROUND-UP ———— OWEN MIZON TAKES HIS LATEST LOOK ACROSS LEAGUE TWO Cheltenham Town capitalised on their promotion rivals’ misfortunes by entering pole position with a 1-0 win over Southend United at Whaddon Road. Conor Thomas converted from the spot just after the break to seal a third consecutive win for the Robins, who once again proved astute defensively and are clearly demonstrating title credentials. Despite defeat, the Shrimpers are two points afloat in 22nd in what looks set to be a battle between three for the drop. Cambridge United were on the receiving end of a smash-and-grab victory at the Abbey Stadium as a late Alfie Beestin strike separated the sides in a 0-1 Scunthorpe United success. The U’s had enjoyed a plethora of opportunities throughout the encounter, but it was the Iron who proved clinical as they returned to winning ways and climbed to 18th. Consecutive losses on home soil sees Mark Bonner’s men slip to 2nd, but with plenty to play for in their remaining 13 matches. A brace from Danny Newton helped set a resurgent Stevenage side on their way to stunning promotion-chasing Forest Green Rovers 3-0 on Tuesday evening. Boro were two goals to the good at half-time thanks to Newton’s strikes, before Elliott List put the game to bed on 64 to send Alex Revell’s side 16th, 12 points clear of trouble and five unbeaten. Rovers, on the other hand, occupy the final automatic promotion spot. Level on points and a place behind are Tranmere Rovers, who recorded their third win on the bounce with a 1-0 success over Newport County. Liam Feeney drilled home the only goal of the game after seven minutes, before Rovers showed tenacity and persistence to see out the encounter and earn an eighth win in ten. The Exiles obtain

8th and the solitary point from the playoffs, despite winning just twice since 12th December. Morecambe continue to defy the odds in 5th after overcoming Crawley Town 3-1 at the Mazuma Stadium. An early Cole Stockton strike for the Shrimps was soon cancelled out by a cool Ashley Nadesan finish, before a second-half brace from Carlos Mendes Gomes helped the hosts see out a tricky tie assuringly and sink the Red Devils to 14th. Bolton Wanderers continued their emphatic form after overpowering ten-man Oldham Athletic 0-2 at Boundary Park, their sixth win on the trot. An own goal from Harry Clarke set Ian Evatt’s men on their way, before the hosts were reduced to 10 men nine minutes later via a poor Kyle Jameson challenge. The advantage was doubled through Eoin Doyle on the 40th minute, cannoning his 13th of the campaign. The voyage into the top three continues for the Trotters, they now occupy 6th. Whereas the Latics, who have won just 25% of their home games, are 17th. Salford City remain unbeaten at the Peninsula Stadium this season after Ian Henderson’s header at the end of the first half secured a first win in four as the Ammies overcame Port Vale 1-0. Richie Wellens’ side make up the last of the play-off pack, whereas the Valiants are languishing in 21st, 8 points clear of the drop. Exeter City and Walsall shared the spoils in a St James Park stalemate on Tuesday evening. The Grecians, who lacked a cutting edge, are situated in 9th and have a couple of pivotal games in hand. Today’s visitors the Saddlers, who remained stubborn to ensure the clean sheet, are 15th but winless in six. A rampant Bradford City moved to 10th and within three points of the play-offs after edging out Mansfield Town 1-0 to stretch CAMBRIDGE UNITED F.C. V WALSALL F.C.

25 their winning run to five matches. Danny Rowe bagged the decider at Valley Parade, firing home from close range just after the half an hour mark. A fourth loss in five for Nigel Clough’s Stags puts them 19th, but just a point from 15th. Harrogate Town secured three consecutive wins for the second time this season as a late Jack Muldoon strike sunk fellow promoted side Barrow 0-1 to send the Sulphurites up to a commendable 11th. It’s proven a tricky first season back for the Bluebirds, nonetheless, they’ve lost five of their last six and are located in 23rd. 2 points are required to escape, with the Cumbrian side boasting a healthier goal difference and two games in hand. Colchester United came from behind to acquire a first win in fifteen matches, compiling further misery on Carlisle United in the process

with a 2-1 win at the JobServe Community Stadium. Jon Mellish had originally handed the travellers a 29th minute lead, but a quickfire brace from Callum Harriott midway through the second period gave interim coach Wayne Brown a morale-boosting win as they lie in 20th. Chris Beech will no doubt be frustrated by the Cumbrian’s recent form. They’re without a win in six, losing five of those and are 12th. They do of course have several games in hand, which now have increased importance. The Jobi McAnuff era got off to the perfect start as Leyton Orient travelled home from Blundell Park with a 0-1 win over basement side Grimsby Town. Substitute Dan Happe came off the bench to settle the contest and gain a first win since January 16th for the O’s, who sit content in 13th. With one win in 12, the Mariners are four points from safety. ■

Hot off the Habbin ———— Andrew Stephen ———— THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE PERFORMANCE, APART FROM THROWING AWAY THE GAME GLENN HODDLE

I don’t often agree with the eccentric Mr Hoddle. He certainly wasn’t very complimentary about us when we demolished his fancied Swindon Town team some years ago. For all that, he was a wonderful player in the days when Spurs played attractive and compelling football and his comment above could have been made about our last home game. There is not much between many of the teams in our league and most games are a battle. Despite that, we outplayed Scunthorpe and, on chances, should have won comfortably. Any long term football fan knows that sometimes things don’t go your way. Scunthorpe never looked like scoring but did. We all know that winning away when you don’t deserve it is one of the great pleasures of football. I love it when we win like that. Do I think that our promotion push is over? Certainly not. A couple of poor results don’t ruin what is turning into a very good side. I am no tactician but I do know that our front two, effective as they are, are not blessed with blistering pace. I think we miss Hannant when he is injured or out of form. The thought of him and Dunk and, sometimes, a third pacy winger is one to bother any defence. Our forwards missed a few on Tuesday but they don’t often. Creating chances is a guarantee that we will win most matches. It is strange how pessimistic fans are. I wonder if they are gnashing their teeth at chequebook wonders FGR or primitive Newport. I imagine so. To say that we can’t play without Wes, the Boat or anyone else is insulting to the other players. We generally have a strong bench now and a couple of www.cambridge-united.co.uk

youngsters champing at the bit. I hope we see Worman and Simper soon but I am getting ahead of myself. The point is that the club are financially sound, we have a great manager and a team to be proud of. Apart from that, everything is awful. At least when we’re struggling, we can listen to Jonno and Doug coming up with new ways of saying that it’s not going well or endless variations thereof. And so Walsall, who I remember from their Fellowes Park days. They remain the Saddlers, a profession once common in that part of Birmingham apparently. Now it’s all motorways and IKEA but the accents and traditions have not changed. I have a bit of a soft spot for them. Alan Buckley was one of the most cultured players I have ever seen at any level. Mr Entertainment, alias Richard Money, managed there and Dave Serella, another seriously good player, I knew from my schooldays. They are a bit of a sleeping giant who seem to draw a lot of their matches this season. Like most opponents, they will be tough to beat but it’s time to get back on track now. Earlier this season we were being told that we only played well on iFollow. This Saturday we will and capricious fortune will smile on us once again!■

HELPING FAMILIES ENJOY FOOTBALL AT HOME The ‘homemade waste pipe goal’. Waste pipes, push-fit knuckle bends and some barrier fencing. It doesn’t seem like much, but sometimes it’s all you need to transform your garden into a proper footy pitch.

Everyone loses when you step on the track

Cambridge United want our fans, families and friends to stay safe, so we are supporting the You Vs Train campaign. We are sharing the message that young people need to stay off the tracks. 8 young people have died in the last two years after trespassing on the railway. PLEASE don’t be next. Visit youvstrain.co.uk for more information and help us keep our fans safe.

EVERYONE KNOWS THEIR CLUB COLOURS... DON’T THEY? NORMAL VISION

Approximately one in 12 men inherit colour blindness. It’s carried on the X-chromosome, so only one in 200 women inherit the condition. It can be a real issue in football, whether you’re watching, playing, managing or officiating. Imagine not being able to tell the difference between kit colours, and how that would affect your enjoyment of watching the game – either live or on TV. There are three types of colour blindness – and myriad colour combinations which cause problems. The common perception that colour-blind people only confuse reds and greens is a myth.

COLOUR-BLIND SIMULATION (PROTANOPIA)

The FA has been working closely with UEFA and specialist organisation Colour Blind Awareness to highlight the issue. The intention is to positively influence decision-makers at every level of the game and improve the experience of colour-blind people – whatever their involvement in football. This work has seen the production of a comprehensive guidance booklet. You can read and download it at TheFA.com/colourblindness And please visit the Colour Blind Awareness website: colourblindawareness.org for ways you can help maximise awareness.

Together, let’s make sure football’s future is FOR ALL.
