We return to the Abbey this week for a double home game week, before spending next week on the road at Bolton and Oldham. Following a long away day on Saturday, we are bang in the middle of a busy and intense period of games which is the same for everyone. Whilst we remain a couple of games ahead of most in the league, those games won’t be played until the end of March or April, so for us, it is in our hands to stay in the position we are. This is a big task for us but one we are going to attack and enjoy. Saturday was a physically demanding game due to the playing surface and the size of Vale Park. The delayed kick off was due to our late arrival after encountering an accident on the M6. This made it a longer trip than we hoped for but couldn’t be helped. We didn’t start as convincingly as we would have liked and Callum kept us level with a key save in the early stages. However, as we settled into the game and Port Vale’s fast start decreased, we were able to get a little more control and found ourselves in some good positions. A flurry of set plays came close to opening the scoring. As is often the case, a new manager drove the team to run hard and constantly put the ball back on top of us, making it an end to end www.cambridge-united.co.uk

game and hard for us to sustain the attacks. In the moments we worked the ball well, we looked a real threat and wore them down. The back four were never off the hook and the midfield boys had to put a serious physical shift in. Liam and Joe gave us good strength and stability making a solid impact as you would expect and Liam’s goal was a super hit. In the end we think three points from the past week is a fair return and a good one. No doubt we will require everyone’s contribution over the coming weeks as the games continue to come at us quickly, but there’s no doubt that the players want to be playing right now and the momentum we have, we want to maintain. Today will be a tough game. Scunthorpe have made big improvements from the early stages of the season and now have more experience in the team. We will need to be energetic and hard working as ever to compete in the game and then hope to bring enough quality to get on top of the game. At this time of year, you have to keep finding a way, and we continue to rotate the team, we hope to keep finding winning formulas and performances. ■

Welcome to Scunthorpe and a particularly warm welcome to George Taft who returns to the Abbey after leaving in the summer. Apart from Liam O’Neil smashing a superb 25yard goal on Saturday one other football story caught my eye this weekend. This is the idea of Old Firm rivals Celtic and Rangers entering B teams into the Scottish League 2. They will offer financial compensation to the clubs in the league and would also guarantee to buy hundreds of tickets for away games. The only reason Scottish League 2 clubs would agree to this is because they need the money. That need is a symptom of the unsustainable way football is financed, with costs for nearly all clubs being far in excess of income. It was also reported last week that one club in League 1 have lost £700,000 per month, each month, for the last 10 years. Wages have been £106 for every £100 of revenue over that period. They are not alone in running up such losses. In the Championship the losses get bigger. So, could B teams be the solution to funding the lower leagues in the future? Absolutely not. If they are introduced in Scotland one result will be clubs pay out more in player wages. There will then be a knock on effect into the rest of the Scottish football pyramid as clubs pay inflated wages in order to compete. Eventually www.cambridge-united.co.uk

some clubs will be forced out of the league. There is a better way. Last summer Leagues 1 and 2 in the EFL agreed on salary caps which brought real hope that football could start to address the gap created by ever increasing player costs which outstrip the income clubs can generate. That was bitterly opposed by the PFA and, as a result of their legal challenge, the salary cap has had to be abandoned. So, it is back to the drawing board for the EFL. It is to be hoped that some form of effective control on player wages can be found. In the long term this is the route to sustainable football which will be good for all, including the players. Returning to today, we now have 14 games left this season. No one can predict where any team in the top half of the league will end up. What is now proving easier to predict is that it is increasingly likely that we will have fans back at the Abbey next season. We are though adopting a cautious approach in relation to putting season tickets on sale. Last year fans bought season tickets with no clear idea of when they would be able to watch a game. When they go on sale this year there should be far greater certainty. We will announce when they are to go on sale in good time. For now, please get your iFollow pass and enjoy the game. ■

TODAY’S VISITORS ———— SCUNTHORPE UNITED ———— The emotional rollercoaster of lower league football isn’t for the faint-hearted, and Scunthorpe fans have plenty of recent experience of the white knuckle ride. The Iron were serious contenders for promotion to the championship as recently as 2018, but play-off defeat was the catalyst for a downturn which has seen the North Lincolnshire side drop anchor in in the lower reaches of the fourth tier. A quick return to League One following relegation was never on the cards as the Iron stuttered to 20th place last term before the season was curtailed due to the pandemic. A sluggish start to this season hinted at another battle to avoid the drop, but Neil

Cox’s side recovered admirably with a winning run in January and February - they’re currently nine points above the relegation zone.

THE FORM

Four league wins on the bounce early in 2021 provided some much needed confidence following a run of five defeats in six. Crucially, three of those victories came against other sides struggling towards the foot of the table – Grimsby, Colchester and Port Vale. The winning run was ended at Bolton last Tuesday before another reverse at the weekend, this time at the hands of Cheltenham. Away from home, it’s been feast or famine for CAMBRIDGE UNITED F.C. 9 the Iron this season. They’re yet to draw away in the league and have won five and lost nine of their games on the road. Their standout performance of the season came at Harrogate back in December where they recorded an impressive 5-2 victory.

THE MANAGER – NEIL COX

Cox enjoyed a stellar playing career as a defender, starting out with Scunthorpe before going on to make over 600 career appearances for Clubs such as Aston Villa, Bolton and Watford where he played over 200 times scoring 21 goals. He hung up his boots in 2012 before taking up the managerial reigns at Leek Town before a 6 year stint as assistant boss at AFC Wimbledon. A spell as assistant manager at Notts County followed before the Iron came calling in August, taking Cox back to his home town Club. His competitive record since taking over at Glanford Park reads: Played 34, Won 11, Drawn 3, Lost 20■

COMMUNITY TRUST ——— United For Cambridge Sleepout! ——— A virtual sleep-out is seeking to raise money for Wintercomfort and Cambridge United Community Trust. Thirty-five people took part last February at the Abbey Stadium to raise awareness of homelessness and valuable funds for the charities. With restrictions caused by the pandemic, this year’s event on Friday, March 26 invites the community to create their own sleep-out experience at home. It could be a garden, terrace, garage or kitchen floor, as long as it is safe and legal, and a virtual quiz, bedtime story broadcast, competitions and live link-ups with special guests will be held. All proceeds raised will be shared between the Community Trust and Wintercomfort. Simon Wall, the Community Trust’s Communities manager, said: “Despite the fact we’re sleeping apart, this event is all about uniting people with a common cause. It’s time to tackle homelessness and this event is a fun, unique and crafty way to do this. “Each year we do this, people get up in the morning, knowing that through having given up their bed for one night, they have made a real difference to their local community.” Melody Brooker, fundraising and communications manager for Wintercomfort, said: “For many people in Cambridge, finding a safe and dry place to sleep is a nightly challenge. Your participation in this

CFU CORNER ———— Ben Phillips ———— It is with great sadness that we have learnt of the tragic death of another lifelong U’s fan, Ian shaw. Ian was known to many, having stood in the Newmarket Road End for over 30 years, and in the Habbin stand before that. He attended the games with his friend Noel Young and made a devotee of at least one of his sons, Elliott. Ian’s sharp wit and affability earned him many life-long friends and acquaintances at United. He wasn’t just a passive supporter but used his professional influence to sponsor matches & was a regular poster on the supporters’ forums. Ian was a passionate supporter of the club and will be interred there on Saturday May 22nd, 2021 when a memorial will be held for all those who would like to commemorate his life. The pandemic has been a difficult time for many and has removed many of the outlets people need to balance their stressful lives. The football club already does a lot of great work at ensuring it is a mental health friendly football club, through arranging initiatives and campaigns to encourage fans of the club to speak out & seek appropriate help and support if needed. CFU as a supporter’s trust has being working with the football club on helping with a number of mental health initiatives for supporters. We have recently signed up for the football supporters’ federations latest mental health scheme called #Terracetalks which encourages all football fans to have honest and open conversations about mental health and offers advice on mental health support services. CFU is working with former U’s player Liam Hughes, who has faced his own mental health battles off the pitch in supplying mental health talk workshops to fans and the wider community, through Liam’s company called WAND. As an organisation we have already delivered a mental health workshop talk to youngsters with Liam at Cambridge Regional college sixth form, which proved a success and beneficial to those youngsters who attended. We have also created a new link www.cambridge-united.co.uk

recently in the community with the YMCA Hostel in Cambridge, where through the power of talking about football & people’s own experiences, we are helping people with mental health difficulties. Cambridge United Community Trust have launched some great initiatives within the community. The club’s disability officer, Phil Mullen runs specific mental health football sessions for fans and people in the community who may want some support. The weekly dropin sessions run on a Wednesday morning from 10-11am and it is a great opportunity to safely meet up, exercise, chat and support new and old. It also gives people another opportunity to seek advice and chat about issues they maybe experiencing. Around the Division ———— LEAGUE TWO ROUND-UP ———— OWEN MIZON TAKES HIS LATEST LOOK ACROSS LEAGUE TWO A late wonder strike from Liam O’Neil ensured that Cambridge United remain the cream of the crop in League Two as Mark Bonner’s men overcame Port Vale 0-1. In a tricky encounter where both sides cancelled each other out impeccably, it was one moment of magic from the substitute on the 85th minute whose 30yard piledriver separated the sides and helped retain the U’s one-point cushion at the top. For Darrell Clarke, who still awaits a first win at the helm, his side slip to 20th and are without victory in four. Forest Green Rovers recovered from their shock midweek defeat to Southend United with a comprehensive 3-0 victory over a lacklustre Colchester United at the New Lawn. A quickfire Jamille Matt brace, his tally now reading 14, put the hosts in the driving seat. Despite being reduced to ten men after Ebou Adams was sent off just before half-time, Mark Cooper’s men strolled the encounter in the second half and forced an own goal from Brendan Sarpong-Wiredu to wrap up the scoring and remain 2nd. The U’s, who parted ways with Steve Ball days before the match, haven’t tasted victory since the 8th December and have recorded just one away success all season, loom in 21st. Football in Gloucestershire is in good hands to say the least, with Cheltenham Town a point behind in 3rd after recording a 0-2 success over Scunthorpe United. The damage was done in the first half when goals from Sam Smith and Callum Wright, as well as some inspired Josh Griffiths saves between the sticks, recorded consecutive wins and clean sheets and consigned tonight’s visitors to 19th, who’ll be eager to return to their previous sublime form. EVERYONE KNOWS THEIR CLUB COLOURS... DON’T THEY? NORMAL VISION

Approximately one in 12 men inherit colour blindness. It’s carried on the X-chromosome, so only one in 200 women inherit the condition. It can be a real issue in football, whether you’re watching, playing, managing or officiating. Imagine not being able to tell the difference between kit colours, and how that would affect your enjoyment of watching the game – either live or on TV. There are three types of colour blindness – and myriad colour combinations which cause problems. The common perception that colour-blind people only confuse reds and greens is a myth.

COLOUR-BLIND SIMULATION (PROTANOPIA)

The FA has been working closely with UEFA and specialist organisation Colour Blind Awareness to highlight the issue. The intention is to positively influence decision-makers at every level of the game and improve the experience of colour-blind people – whatever their involvement in football. This work has seen the production of a comprehensive guidance booklet.
