Women Darren Marjoram

Firstly, and as always, all of us involved with the Women’s team would like to wish Mark and the lads the very best of luck for today’s game. Hopefully we can be celebrating again at full time! It has been a very up and down couple of weeks for us with a local derby win over Cambridge City followed by a poor performance and heavy defeat against Actonians. The important thing after that defeat was to ensure we bounced back quickly, and we worked hard in training to ensure that was possible. We then travelled to face Stevenage on Sunday after a good week of training and with a strong squad, although still with a few players missing through injury. The first half was very even with neither team looking particularly dangerous, but in the second half we showed the bravery and excitement of previous weeks and took the lead through a Laura Baker penalty after Emma Jenkins was fouled in the box. The sustained pressure was now mounting on Stevenage and keeper Te’a Oldroyd was at times keeping the hosts in the game. However, Laura Mitchell doubled the lead with a smart turn and finish after a good through ball from Baker, to give us a lead

which we never looked like giving up. A win and a clean sheet away from home is always a great result, but all credit to the players for the character they showed to bounce back from the previous game. Finally, a huge thanks to everyone who came to support, and in particular Paul Barry and Graham Daniels. Cambridge United really is one family and it’s something we are all privileged to be a part of. Up the U’s! ■
