MARK BONNER ———— HEAD COACH ————

We start the six-game shoot-out today with a fixture against a club who will be looking to continue the success of recent seasons by landing a play-off position. With such an open league, there are few ‘dead’ games remaining with so many clubs having plenty to play for. We are fully aware of the challenge today’s game brings but also know that our form has been good and we have found an excellent level in recent weeks. We will work today to do the same again and as we approach the final stages of the season. We are taking each game as it comes and remaining level-headed and focused. I have mentioned before that I have great respect for Exeter City. They are regularly competitive at the top end of the division, and are in a constant cycle of developing players through the Academy and First Team, whilst also developing their stadium and training ground facilities each year. They are an excellent example for clubs at our level, and whilst their ownership model is different to most, they have a record of consistent success in the aforementioned areas. www.cambridge-united.co.uk

BROUGHT TO YOU BY

The Easter weekend was a successful one for us having taken four points from another tough two games. Morecambe are enjoying a strong season, and whilst a bit like us, they weren’t one of the fancied teams in the summer, their performances, results and consistency sees them being among the group of teams pushing for the top spots. We started really well and needed to further our lead in the first half, and whilst we found the second half a challenge, we deservedly took the three points. Monday was a real grind of a game against a team with big expectations and who had come off the back of a heavy defeat. It was no surprise how tough the game turned out, especially when the conditions and the pitch only added to the difficulty of the task. We fought hard, weren’t bullied, carried a threat and did enough to gain a vital point. With just three league fixtures remaining at the Abbey, we are hoping to deliver performances that reflect our best level in terms of quality, attitude and effort. I’m also challenging the players to keep embracing the situation and playing with the shackles off.■

Ian————Mather CEO ———— Welcome to our visitors from Exeter. We are now very much at the business end of the season. Both the U’s and the Grecians have a very credible shot at promotion and the game today will be a tough challenge for both teams. Inevitably, as we look forward to the last few games, and Covid infection rates fall, the question is asked increasingly – is there hope of fans being allowed back before the end of the season? There is a possibility there will be for limited crowds at the play-off semi-finals and final. The dates for your diary are Thursday 20 and Sunday 23 May. What is the likelihood of fans being allowed back for next season, starting on 7 August? There is complete unity across the EFL, Premier League and the FA that we really do need to get to the point where we can have unrestricted crowds and hospitality. Click here to read the open letter penned by sports organisations this week directly to politicians on this matter. The government understand the need to do this but in the end we will all be directed as to what we can do by Public Health officials. Some question the need for restrictions at all now but the fact remains that we are still at risk of a new wave of the virus. Even when the adult population has been vaccinated there remains a threat from new variants of Covid being introduced to the country which could undermine the good work done by vaccination. The next key step is the pilot events that are being held over the coming weeks to test whether mass events will have a significant effect on infection rates. These are likely to require testing before and after the event and possibly proof of vaccination. One key event to watch out for is the Snooker World Championship from 17 – 3 May. Currently the final may take place with a full capacity indoors. We should hope that the measures taken mean low, ideally zero, infection rates. What is likely to emerge is some requirement around Covid certification. This is probably the route to reducing, even eliminating, the need www.cambridge-united.co.uk

BROUGHT TO YOU BY

for social distancing which if imposed would limit our crowd to around 2,000. It is said such a system would be unfair. I think the unfairness can be dealt by the system that is used. What is being proposed at this stage (and this may change) is that there would be three ways to show it is safe to come to watch a match: 1. Show you have been vaccinated – unclear yet as to whether two jabs would be needed, or 2. You have had Covid in the last six months, or 3. You have had a negative Covid test within a certain time before the game. This proof of previous Covid infection or a negative test are measures to make the system fair to those who have not been vaccinated for whatever reason. Any system would need to be designed by government and be easy to follow. You can be sure that we will do all we can to get as many fans as we can back into the Abbey as soon as possible. In the meantime, please continue your support on iFollow and enjoy the game. ■

TODAY’S VISITORS ———— EXETER CITY FC ———— Like a recurring episode of Bullseye, it’s been a case of “here’s what you could have won” for Exeter in recent years. Grecians fans must be sick to the back teeth of league two after multiple promotion challenges have ended in disappointment Three times in the last four seasons, the Devon Club have made the play-off final only to have their dreams dashed at the hands of Blackpool, Coventry and Northampton respectively the Cobblers were emphatic 4-0 winners at Wembley last season, condemning the Grecians to another campaign in the fourth tier.

With Exeter once again challenging for the top seven this term, their supporters could be forgiven for fearing the worst - but in this, the battiest of seasons, perhaps it’s wise not to bet against them ending their play-off hoodoo.

THE FORM

Matt Taylor’s side have hit a rocky patch in recent weeks, with just one win in the last six matches. Four of those games have ended in defeat, with the solitary success coming in the form of a 1-0 home win against Salford. It’d be dangerous to read too much in to CAMBRIDGE UNITED F.C. the recent run, though – the Grecians have notched 60 goals this season and are top of the scoring charts along with the U’s and a run of one defeat in eight matches through February and early March shows they are more than capable of hitting another purple patch. Much of their success this term has been built on their solid home form – they’ve notched ten wins at St James Park, but only five victories away from home – no team in the top ten has won fewer on the road.

www.cambridge-united.co.uk

Taylor featured over 150 times for the Grecians as a player having come through the nonleague ranks. He made his name as a defender having started his playing days in goal. Taylor helped Exeter to climb from the Conference to League One before moving on to feature for Clubs such as Cheltenham and Charlton. The 39 year old returned to Exeter as a defensive coach in 2016 before being promoted to manage the Under 23 team. He took over the first-team reigns in June 2018 following the departure of Paul Tisdale. His competitive managerial record with the Grecians reads: Played 151, Won 67, Drawn 40, Lost 44 ■

MEMORIES DOWN ———— CUT THROAT LANE ———— Afternoon, all. Still top of the league then after a very productive Easter weekend what with most results going our way too. Anybody nervous? Well there’s always the pub beer garden on Monday to take the edge off things! As the Conference era remains a blur I often think back at this point to the 1998/9 season and our last League promotion season. With six games left we still had to play Rochdale away with long trips to Darlington and Plymouth on the itinerary. As well of course as Posh hitting town before the end of the month. Those six games yielded just six points unfortunately although we were the first of 92 teams to clinch promotion that season, with a 2-0 win at Spotland on Tuesday 27 April. Cue “Shaggy is God” on return to the Abbey in the early hours of the Wednesday! The way we effectively gave up the title on the last day of the season to, whisper it, Brentford, still grates twenty two years later. I felt strongly we were the best side in that division (over 45 games!) which is why we must achieve that destiny this season. Anyway, back for a meander down Cut Throat Lane and it’s our favoured 1970/71 season again and 10 April 1971 (Easter Saturday) saw us host runaway leaders and, a few weeks later, champions in the form of the black and white striped half of Nottingham. We must have been looking for revenge that day for the Boxing Day massacre (well sort of, 4-1) which we had endured at Meadow Lane, as the U’s ran home winners 2-1 with goals from Hollett and Walker in front of 6,935, our second highest home gate of the season which included no doubt several migrating magpies. When you consider that the previous DAY we won at Southport, imagine that these days? Two games literally in 24 hours and we played again three days later! Anyway those four Easter points pretty much secured our not having to apply for rewww.cambridge-united.co.uk

election that season, finishing as we did in 20th spot, four points ahead of the trap door which that season included Lincoln (shucks) and the then Ironsides from the then Monmouthshire. Enjoy the programme attached and stay confident. Although I have just been reminded that on 10 April 1912 the Titanic set sail from Southampton…...tragic not least as they missed the formation of the greatest little football club in the world a few months later. Since 1912 - United in Endeavour! Bye for now. ■

FROM THE SLO ———— DAVE MATTHEW-JONES ———— All parts of Cambridge United have come together to welcome our neighbours at the Cambridge Central Mosque in Mill Road. We have provided a number of gift packs in time for Ramadan which begins on Monday April 12th and continues until the 12th May. Cambridge Fans United have been working with Fans for Diversity a national project organised by the Football Supporters’ Association and Kick It Out. Fans for Diversity aims are to celebrate diversity in football to ensure all fans feel safe and welcome at the game, regardless of age, disability, gender, race, faith, sexual orientation or any other protected characteristic. CFU were able to be one of the supporter groups taking part in the national project celebrating Ramadan through our contacts at Fans For Diversity. The gifts included food items that can be used throughout the period, club calendars and footballs which were provided by the Cambridge United Community Trust. Cambridge United is a football club, it is also a community football club. It is really important that we build closer relationships with everyone locally. Football provides a unique opportunity to do this. Both football clubs and Mosques during the past year have been responsible for so much good work throughout their communities. We should be working and building on these foundations together. Nather Al-Khatib Cambs FA Board Director (IAG) said “It is a great opportunity to be engaging with the local community during Ramadan by Cambridge United and Fans for Diversity. I hope we can build on these positive steps to engage more communities in such a diverse city. Football is a great platform to bring people from all backgrounds together, and can be used to inspire the next generation. Anwar Uddin from Fans for Diversity said “I think it’s brilliant the club are working with the Fans for Diversity campaign to engage with the whole city. The Muslim community celebrate Ramadan this month and for the club to acknowledge and support that is testament www.cambridge-united.co.uk

to their work on inclusion. The club has a great history and a terrific fanbase and it’s important as many people in the city have an opportunity to be part of that and support their local football club.” The Cambridge Central Mosque was opened to the public in 2019. With its emphasis on sustainability and high reliance on green energy, the mosque is Europe’s first ecomosque. In addition to the mosque’s dedicated areas (ablution, teaching, children’s area, morgue), there is a café, teaching area and meeting rooms for use by the local Muslim and non-Muslim communities. It can accommodate up to 1000 worshippers. Shahida Rahman Trustee, Cambridge Central Mosque: “Cambridge Central Mosque were delighted to welcome everyone involved in the project celebrating diversity in football. On behalf of the Mosque I would like to thank those involved for the generous Ramadan packs that were presented to us. We hope to continue and expand our relationship with Cambridge United Football Club and our local community, for projects that will benefit the youth, both boys and girls in the future.” Take care, be loud, be proud and be United. Around the Division ———— LEAGUE TWO ROUND-UP ———— OWEN MIZON TAKES HIS LATEST LOOK ACROSS LEAGUE TWO Only Sky Bet League Two could conjure up a matchday where no side in the top six proves victorious and every side in the bottom six avoids defeat. With less than a month to go until we reach the finish line, crunch time commences. As ever, let’s digest the trials and tribulations of our 24 members. Paul Mullin’s 30th strike of the campaign for league leaders Cambridge United secured a hard-earned 1-1 draw over promotion rivals Tranmere Rovers at Prenton Park. Paul Lewis had originally given the hosts an early lead, but the U’s clawed one back to stretch their unbeaten run to five games and go seven points clear of 4th. Despite winning just one in six, Keith Hill’s side retain 3rd with the sole aim of staying there. With two contrasting objectives at stake, the shares were spoiled at Blundell Park as Grimsby Town battled out a 1-1 draw against Cheltenham Town. Lenell John-Lewis opened the scoring on the 8th minute, before being cancelled out by Will Boyle later on in the first half. The Robins remain a healthy 2nd, whereas the Mariners are seven points adrift at the basement in spite of their eight-game unbeaten run. Remarkably, seven of those have been ties. A second-half finish from Nicky Maynard proved the difference as Newport County edged out Bolton Wanderers 1-0 in south Wales, dismantling the visitors’ 14-game unbeaten run in the process. The crucial three points ensures the Exiles occupy the final playoff spot with a three-point cushion, whereas the Trotters are 4th, with goal difference separating them from the automatic promotion spots. Morecambe missed the opportunity of breaking into the top three as they were held 1-1 by Southend United. Timothee Dieng gave the visitors a significant opener, but they were

pegged back by Cole Stockton ten minutes after the interval. A point apiece moves the Shrimps to 5th and bridges the deficit to 5 points from 22nd for the troubled Shrimpers. Forest Green Rovers were consigned to a fourth defeat in five as Salford City recorded a 0-2 victory at the New Lawn courtesy of an Ian Henderson brace. Slumped in 6th, Mark Cooper’s men have a five-point advantage over 8th and know a win today could see them climb as high as 3rd. For the Ammies, a first win in seven moves them to 11th. This afternoon’s visitors Exeter City arrive to CB5 on the back of an uninspiring stalemate over Mansfield Town at St James Park. With just the solitary win in six, the division’s jointtop goalscorers are 8th with three points separating them from the coveted top 7. Where the Stags are concerned, they’re winless in seven and loom in 19th. If it wasn’t for their resurgent January form, they’d be in real trouble. Carlisle United secured a third successive win and clean sheet as they boosted their play-off hopes by beating Scunthorpe United 2-0 at Brunton Park. Jon Mellish netted twice in as many minutes to move Chris Beech’s men to 9th and within three points of the play-offs in what is a congested area of the table. It was a first loss in six for the Iron, but on the other hand they’ve won one in eight, they occupy 18th. Level on points and a place behind the Cumbrians are a spirited Leyton Orient, who earned a goalless draw over Walsall to extend their unbeaten run to seven games. The Saddlers, on the other hand, are in 20th and struggling under Brian Dutton. Since Boxing Day, they’ve recorded one win in 20. Almost 50% of their matches this season has resulted in draws, so you can make the case they’ve been resolute more often than not. CAMBRIDGE UNITED F.C. V EXETER CITY FC

25 Stevenage now haven’t tasted defeat in 12 after sharing a 1-1 draw with Bradford City at the Lamex Stadium. The hosts drew first blood through Luke Norris on 15, but a Clayton Donaldson equaliser ensured the Bantams remained a place and two points ahead of Boro in 12th. The goals were flowing at the Broadfield Stadium as Oldham Athletic strolled to a 1-4 victory against a depleted Crawley Town. A Conor McAleny double and a sweet finish from Cameron Borthwick-Jackson raced the visitors into a three-goal salvo, before a James Tilley consolation for the hosts was capped off by a Dylan Bahamboula finish in the dying embers. Winless in six, the Red Devils are 14th, four points ahead of Oldham in 17th. Port Vale recorded a fifth straight league win for the first time since 2010 as they defeated

Harrogate Town 0-2. In the first EFL match refereed by a woman, Rebecca Welch, the Valiants wrapped up maximum points with second-half goals from David Worrall and Kurtis Guthrie to send Darrell Clarke’s side up to 15th, leapfrogging the Sulphurites who are a place and a point behind after four losses in five. Substitute Tom Beadling helped rescue a 1-1 draw at the death for Barrow against fellow strugglers Colchester United, who looked destined for victory after Callum Harriott’s opener. The table makes for intriguing reading, the Bluebirds are 21st, six points afloat with two precious games in hand. The situation is more dire for the U’s, they’re winless in nine and do not boast an advantage over their rivals. The five-point cushion is welcoming, but that could all change as the late-season momentum starts to kick in. ■

Hot———— offAndrewthe Habbin Stephen ———— TO ACHIEVE STYLE, BEGIN BY AFFECTING NONE I’m not sure that I will ever forgive the Grecians for the defeat they inflicted on us in the Wembley Playoff Final of 2008. No doubt the memory of a dire game was made worse by the taunting of their fans after the game and by the fact they were promoted again the following season. We were so much better than them and yet Rob Edwards’ goal put them back into the league while we struggled in the conference for what seemed an eternity. Some managers talk about fine margins and this was a wonderful example of the concept. Defeat at Wembley always feels terrible but when we were there twice and won twice, all the pain went away. And we won the first ever playoff final at the real Wembley too. A day which I think will never be bettered in my career as a U’s fan. Exeter have long been associated with style, playing good football and, for twelve years, managed by the King of Cool, Paul Tisdale. They have played entertaining attacking football and have often unearthed outstanding players such as Ollie Watkins who has now played international football. It can be done. Having spent three years in league one, Exeter have teased their fans by appearing in playoff finals in 2017, 2018 and 2020. Indeed they are sitting on the edge of the playoffs this season. Talk to their fans about their chances and they are as pessimistic as they were in 2008. They were so convinced that they would lose that many of them chose to stay at home! Exeter is a long way from anywhere and it’s the place where you would expect to see our most loyal fans; Chris Vessey, Andy Weston and the late Keith Hood. It is a great place to stay and to be a tourist in, despite the language barrier. Many of the locals would not be out of place www.cambridge-united.co.uk

amongst the cast of Treasure Island but they are extremely friendly and knowledgeable about the game. Anyway, it’s our turn for glory this season. Now that we are able to put out our first choice team, we are a match for anyone. We are resilient too. We were so good in the early part of the game at Tranmere that I was stunned by the unexpectedness of their goal. I am almost as amazed by the fact that they still had 11 men on the pitch by the end. Paul Lewis seems devoid of sense and yet again weak refereeing meant that our superior skill was offset by a team keen to test the laws as well as his patience. It makes it harder for skillful teams to escape this league but I am sure that we will. The prophets of doom seem to have become very quiet now. We can’t expect to win every game but we have a good chance of finishing as Champions. If we don’t, it will have been a wonderful season anyway. Our team have shown just how much can be achieved by sticking together and working for each other. They are an example to us all. United in Endeavour. ■

HELPING FAMILIES ENJOY FOOTBALL AT HOME The ‘homemade waste pipe goal’. Waste pipes, push-fit knuckle bends and some barrier fencing. It doesn’t seem like much, but sometimes it’s all you need to transform your garden into a proper footy pitch.

Everyone loses when you step on the track

Cambridge United want our fans, families and friends to stay safe, so we are supporting the You Vs Train campaign. We are sharing the message that young people need to stay off the tracks. 8 young people have died in the last two years after trespassing on the railway. PLEASE don’t be next. Visit youvstrain.co.uk for more information and help us keep our fans safe.

EVERYONE KNOWS THEIR CLUB COLOURS... DON’T THEY? NORMAL VISION

Approximately one in 12 men inherit colour blindness. It’s carried on the X-chromosome, so only one in 200 women inherit the condition. It can be a real issue in football, whether you’re watching, playing, managing or officiating. Imagine not being able to tell the difference between kit colours, and how that would affect your enjoyment of watching the game – either live or on TV. There are three types of colour blindness – and myriad colour combinations which cause problems. The common perception that colour-blind people only confuse reds and greens is a myth.

COLOUR-BLIND SIMULATION (PROTANOPIA)

The FA has been working closely with UEFA and specialist organisation Colour Blind Awareness to highlight the issue. The intention is to positively influence decision-makers at every level of the game and improve the experience of colour-blind people – whatever their involvement in football. This work has seen the production of a comprehensive guidance booklet. You can read and download it at TheFA.com/colourblindness And please visit the Colour Blind Awareness website: colourblindawareness.org for ways you can help maximise awareness.

Together, let’s make sure football’s future is FOR ALL.
