WHY WE DO IT
As HHD is in the process of growth inside German society, we believe we can’t go forward without knowing our past. By collecting missing information on the generation in the 1930s we hope to tell the full story of our members.

HISTORY PROJEC
WHO WE ARE
“Hashomer Hatzair Deutschland” (HHD) is the international, left Jewish youth association in Germany that promotes social justice and dialogue through non-formal educational tools. It was re-established in Berlin 10 years ago, more than 70 years after it was prohibited. We, as a youth movement, believe in the principle of youth autonomy, and our activities are planned and carried by the young people themselves.
HASHOMER HATZAIR’S HISTORY PROJECT
Hashomer Hatzair was active in several cities in Germany until 1939. In 2022, we are celebrating the anniversary of our reestablishment by bringing together the new, young generation of our association in a search for traces and memories of the earlier generation of Hashomer Hatzair. The search is taking us back to Berlin in the 1930s to discover the untold stories and forgotten fates of the members of our organisation whose existence was so abruptly ended by Nazism.
sembling of existing information, and search for new ones. A research delegation to Israel visited archives and families of former members in March 2022.
We have discovered so far
At least 5 HHD members were part of the resistance group Herbert-Baum-Gruppe
Locations of the different “Kenim” (activity centers)
A youth Communa (shared housing project) in Berlin
Families of our former members, for longer lasting direct contact
Previously undiscovered and unprocessed documents, personal items and photos.
NEXT STEPS
Following a research phase, which includes mapping the lives and fate of the members of HHD in the 1930s, we are aiming to create several projects.
First is an internal digital library, to allow us to work on intergenerational exchange over years.
Second, to design educational materials for working with children and youth on lives of German Jews before the Holocaust. These materials will be made accessible for partner organisations.
Thirdly, to commemorate the memory of our members through public projects and events, including the creation of a tour on Hashomer Hatzair in Berlin.
