s September came to a close, so did the third annual Hope Fest: Live from Harwood. Over 600 guests danced the night away at Happiest Hour to their favorite country hits by Ray Johnston Band and showstopping surprise headliner Wade Bowen.

The evening was an outstanding success.

Welcoming more guests and sponsors alike, this year’s Hope Fest set a new record. Raising over $260,000 through ticket sales, donations, and a raffle, proceeds benefitted four Texas nonprofits: Cornerstone Achievement Center, Connecting Points of Park Cities, The Huckleberry Foundation, and The Bowen Family Foundation. The impressive tally brings

Hope Fest’s total contributions to over $750,000 since its debut year in 2017.

Later in the evening, Hope Fest founders Katelyn and Oliver BarbierMueller took the stage to tell the story of Hope Fest’s beneficiaries.

A short film highlighting each of the nonprofits played as a beautiful reminder of what the whole night was really about. With emotions high and hopes even higher, the evening’s surprise headliner, Wade Bowen, took the show.

Throughout the night, guests purchased Hope Fest raffle tickets hoping to win some of the unbelievable prizes. The lucky few who won the night’s raffles took home coveted experiences ranging from a private culinary and sommelier experience by Dolce Riviera to an ultra luxe vacation stay in Cabo San Lucas.

Even as Wade Bowen played the last note on his encore, Hope Fest partygoers lingered at Happiest Hour cueing an after-party under the twinkling stars.

HARWOOD TRAILHEAD NOW OPEN Lace up and hit the trail. The Harwood Trailhead featuring easy access to the Katy Trail is now open. Located at the northern edge of the Harwood District, the entry of the Harwood Trailhead are just steps away from Bleu Ciel.

Harwood District becomes more walkable than ever with the opening of the new entrance. Once an abandoned railroad line, Katy Trail is now one of the most iconic destinations in Dallas. With over one million visitors every year, people from all walks of life enjoy the three-and-a-half mile stretch of beautiful scenery, well-maintained paths, and the splendor of the city. For residents, tenants, and visitors of the Harwood District, it’s even easier to bike, run, walk, or skate on the Katy Trail.

To celebrate the opening of the Harwood Trailhead, the Harwood District hosted ROGA — an event blending running with acro yoga — in partnership with Dallas Fitness Ambassadors and benefitting NAMI North Texas. More than 100 Dallasites attended, making the Trailhead's kick-off event an invigorating success.

AN INTIMATE CONVERSATION WITH KENGO KUMA Harwood International had the honor of hosting Kengo Kuma, his design partner Balazs Bognar, and HDF architects Jeff Smith and Steve Chandler for an intimate panel discussion moderated by Michael Friebele, architect with CallisonRTKL. The evening began with a tour of the Rolex Building. Kuma-san had not visited the building in its completed state, so it was his first time to see the twisty tower in all its detail. He toured the rooms, floors, and terraces that he designed and sketched in collaboration with the HDF team. He paused throughout the tour to inspect the details of the building, feel the materials used, and take in seeing his vision brought to life.

From there, the evening continued with a happy hour in the Mercat Bistro pergola.

Fellow architects and fans had the opportunity to speak to Kuma-san directly some even bringing copies of his book, “Architecture for Defeat” for him to sign.

Michael Friebele then guided a conversation with the four visionaries on the panel to dive deeper into the inspiration for the building, its challenges, and what makes the building so unique.

A key feature in the building is the open glass terrace on the top level. The space is private and is designated for Rolex associates. Bognar describes the space as an outdoor escape for those working in the building.

"The space added a very human approach to the ways we live our lives. It’s basic things such as natural light and so forth. But you can imagine these people probably want to take a break so we gave them their own place to hang out. But why not have it be outdoors? It’s basically a continuity of the nature we find on the ground lifted up a little bit and have them experienced that as their own as well."

Kuma-san adds that, “in the 20th century, the main goal is to expand and extend the footprint as much as we can, to invade nature. So instead we tried to bring nature into the building.”

And it was no different for the design of the new Rolex building. Its shifting and ascending square structure allow room on every level for tranquil gardens to blossom. And with its unique asymmetrical structure transforming the building at every angle, providing different views and perspectives depending on your viewpoint. It was also important that the building feel a part of its surroundings. For Kuma-san, community is another huge aspect of design.

He wanted to create a hub of importance and community around a space.

“The castle wall is a wall, but at the same time it is a part of earth, part of the land. Normally a vertical wall is just architecture, it is not belonging to earth.

A traditional castle wall in Japan is part of natural land and so it is very different than the effects of just a vertical concrete wall. Vertical concrete walls reject people but a natural stone castle wall is welcoming people. But it is still protecting the building. We used that wisdom for the building.”

The night’s intimate panel covered many topics, but chief among them was Kuma-san’s awe at what Dallas had become. “My first visit to Dallas was in 1985, when I was studying at Columbia. Then my second visit to Dallas was totally different, it looked different. People started to walk on the street and there were many shadows. Shadows were almost a theme of the space. I thought, why in 30 years was there such a big change that happened in Dallas?

How to create a new symbol for Dallas became a theme of our project. I think this is a very important project for American cities, because American cities used to be cities only used for cars but how can we change American cities. European streets are very intimate, very active. The Japanese culture is also very sustainable and intimate. How can we bring that kind of culture to American cities. We tried to show that kind of philosophy in that building.”

A shared vision for a better more walkable city brought Kengo Kuma and Harwood International together. The collaboration brought a new iconic building to Dallas and was another step to a more beautiful city. In 2019, the building won ENR's Best Office Project in the World, bringing the building to a national stage.

Athletes and spectators from all over the globe will experience Kengo Kuma’s iconic work at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic stadium.

HARWOOD OP-ED: THE SAMURAI COLLECTION

architecture that went into the construction of these helmets. One particular kabuto has an adornment that almost looks like dragonfly wings. The details in each piece of Japanese armor are unending and exquisite. Another style of helmet, called a jingasa, intrigued me because it was specifically constructed to wear while riding a horse. This floated my curiosity to wonder if horses wore protective gear.

As the door of The Ann & Gabriel Barbier-Mueller Museum: The Samurai Collection closed behind me, the world fell away. It's quieter than I thought it would be. I am enveloped in a sense of peace. The busy buzz of bustling street traffic fades away like a hollow echo and the city of Dallas feels distant.

Even though I did some research before visiting, I still had embedded notions of what I thought I would see at The Samurai Collection. If you’re anything like me, you think of the medieval era when pondering the history and concept of armor. Knights of the Round Table dawning chain mail suits and silver metal armor instantly come to mind. Samurai are very different.

At the entrance I am confronted by a mustachioed suit made of luxurious materials. Not only is its size surprising, everything about it is unique.This is not the suit of armor familiarly described in fairy tales or portrayed in medieval movies -- instead I am greeted by the intricate designs of samurai armor.

As I wander through the Museum I find favorite upon favorite. With every step, I discover another piece that stops me in my tracks. Full sets of armor incorporate both silk and iron. Breastplates are beautifully inlaid with silver and gold dragons surrounded by billowing clouds.

Overall, it’s the textures that really lure me in. This place reignites my childhood dream of becoming a fashion designer. My phone quickly fills with countless close-up photos of the different fabrics, leathers, and metals. My breath is taken away by every tiny detail.

As I turn the corner, I see a pair of samurai mounted on life-like horses that are mid-gallop. Seeing these warriors on horseback puts the experience of The Samurai Collection into clear perspective. Everything around me is both fierce and beautiful. I can easily visualize the battle field and these warriors charging toward me. If I was the enemy it’s likely the last thing I would ever see.

I snap out of this exhilarating daydream and the nagging question resurfaces, “Did these horses also have battle gear?”

I soon stumble upon a mask for horses! As a samurai, you could dress your horse with a mask, called a bamen, typically made from papiermâché to make him look like a dragon.

As I reach the end of my self-guided tour of the Museum, I take note of what I have seen during my visit. The juxtaposition of samurai weaponry, other ceremonial objects and armor is intriguing. I am awed by the artistic mastery surrounding me while also enjoying the humorous abstractions created by the makers of these objects. For example, a tiny gun on display along with a collection of arrowheads that look too beautiful to shoot. We Texans have a collective disdain for cicadas, and yet, these aggravating insects are immortalized in iron on a helmet.

I say my thanks to the friendly and knowledgeable Museum staff and exit this true hidden gem. Saint Ann Restaurant & Bar is located downstairs on the first floor of the historic St. Ann’s School building that houses The Ann & Gabriel Barbier-Mueller Museum: The Samurai Collection and the restaurant. I take a seat at the indoor bar and order a craft cocktail.

All of a sudden, it hits me. Just above me I was immersed in a completely different world, a calm reprieve from the evermoving Dallas day. The Samurai Collection is a place to take a breath, and take a closer look.

GALLERY NO. 704 WITH ARTIST UPRISING After the successful Bleu Mer: Mer Bleu event, Artist Uprising and Bleu Ciel partner again to deliver yet another enticing collaboration, Gallery No. 704.

The mission? To bring the best of the Dallas art scene into Dallas’ best Sky-Rise. Exclusive for residents and invited visitors of Bleu Ciel, Gallery No. 704 presents the unique opportunity for residents to discover the work of up-and-coming artists. Residents will be able to shop the art directly from this gallery and even customize a viewing in addition to commission new artworks.

In its first exhibition, the pop-up gallery features the work of several rotating Dallas-based artists including Dan Lam, Eddie Love, and Matthew Brinston. Dan Lam mesmerized the art world and Internet alike with her otherworldly alien-like sculptures. She launched onto the art scene amassing more than 65,000 followers on Instagram in just one year and gaining the attention of galleries all around the world. Her work has shown in galleries from Fort Worth to Sweden. Lam caught the eye of many celebrities including Miley Cyrus and Lily Aldridge. Made from polyurethane foam, acrylic paint, and epoxy resin these sculptures seem almost alive and are positively trippy and drippy.

Matthew Brinston is another featured artist in Bleu Ciel’s new pop-up gallery. At the age of 24, Brinston is already creating waves in the art world. Though he has found great success, it hasn’t been without a dash of adversity and stroke of good luck. Given a true second chance at life after a brush with death, Brinston now makes the most of it through gallery shows, a finished residency in France, and executing curious methods of sharing his works. An artist with a story, he delivers his message through his multimedia works that are nothing short of alluring to the viewer.

Eddie Love is a self-taught artist who explores and combines multiple styles into a cohesive brand all his own. His work at first glance can appear products of pure pop culture. However, upon closer examination, one finds a multitude of layered ideas, meanings, and counter cultural associations. His unique work has made it into the hands of celebrity collectors like Jay-Z in the headquarters for Roc Nation.

Now open, Gallery No. 704 is an awe-inspiring amenity at Bleu Ciel. Between shopping new artwork to commissioning a new favorite piece; there are so many opportunities to dip a toe into the Dallas art scene.

Nora Shields is the Director of Learning and Culture at Harwood Hospitality. The Hospitality team is currently 600+ people deep and growing as the Harwood team plans to double the number of hospitality concepts in the next two years. Nora is ensuring that the Hospitality team is taking service to the next level by developing a foundation of training and building an internal hospitality university.

Chris Hall joined Harwood International in 2014 and is the concierge for Harwood No. 6. Over the summer, Chris was elected as the concierge of the quarter. His positive attitude, attention to detail, and willingness to help everyone that comes through the door make him an exemplary associate.

What is the magic of Harwood Hospitality? What sets it apart?

The opportunity — Harwood has the comforts of a corporate environment, but the authenticity of working closely with someone who owns it. It feels a little more authentic. It’s really unique and you get to be a part of something so much bigger.

And of course, there’s the romantic story of Harwood. How Gabriel fell in love with Dallas and developed the District. He saw a vision and despite everybody telling him no, he kept going. Now look at Harwood, Uptown and the surrounding area — the growth is incredible. It’s really a story of perseverance.

What are you doing differently with the Harwood Hospitality training?

It's all about creating a culture. I like to describe it as a university. We want to give the proper training, education, and access to learning. Everything that you can do to advance yourself and your career. We definitely don't want anybody to leave, but if somebody were to leave, we would want that to seem like they came from like an esteemed college. Something like ‘Oh that person graduated from Harvard.’ ‘Oh, that manager came from a Harwood restaurant.’

What is next for Harwood?

Our next project is Harwood Arms and then we have several other concepts going La Rue Perdue. French for "The Lost Street," this alleyway between Harwood No. 10 and Harwood No. 4 will have several of our own concepts. It’s really going to feel like you’re not in Dallas anymore.

What is your favorite concept in the Harwood District? Favorite place around the District?

That’s like asking who your favorite child is. It really just depends. If I want to go out and have fun and dress up, I would go to Te Deseo. If I wanted to go and watch a really fun game, Happiest Hour. And Dolce or Mercat for a date night.

It really just depends.

What’s your favorite part about being a concierge at HI? My favorite part is seeing and engaging with the people. I work with a natural enjoyment, and that’s important to me. Talking with everyone that comes through is fun.

What does a typical day look like for you?

A typical day is maybe a hundred people come in through, with lots of questions and needing help. Listening and being empathetic in bad situations is important. You just keep a friendly smile and help them with that situation. As long as they're enjoying themselves and coming back, that's what we want.

Describe yourself in three words.

Friendly, serious, and curious.

What are you most proud of, personally or professionally?

Personally, I like my self-drive and I like my ambition outside of work. My drive is to continue maintaining the life that I have. I have a lifestyle of, you know, coming from a different country and seeing different things. So, I appreciate the smaller things in life and I'm happy with where I'm at right now.

What would you recommend to Harwood District visitors? And do you have a favorite place around the district?

Lunch or breakfast at Marie Gabrielle Restaurant and Gardens.

I really, really, enjoy just sitting outside there and having a meal.

What does the Harwood concierge motto “Lead, Train, Achieve” mean to you?

To me personally, I feel that I already am that, I feel like that's my life and it resonates with me. I have a keyword that was from my background growing up in islands: Satisfy. I know how to satisfy. I believe within myself, and what they're trying to say is to be a leader, be a strong person, you know, do what's expected of you and more. Lead, Train, Achieve helps communicate that standard to new people who come in.

Rachel Groff is the Tenant Relations Manager for Harwood District. Her prime responsibility is ensuring all tenants in Harwood have a seamless experience and feel connected to the neighborhood.

Phil Hughes is the Harwood International Concierge for Harwood No. 3 and Harwood No. 4 for the last two years.

This year, he was elected as the Concierge of the Quarter in the fall. He continues to lead those around him with his work ethic and integrity.

What do you do as a Tenant Relations Manager?

The position stemmed from a desire to connect more with our tenants. We have over 85 companies that employ over 4,000 people - how do we make sure everyone is getting everything they need? We wanted to help them experience all the things that Harwood has to offer. Instead of just connecting with them when rent is due or there’s a problem with a door, we wanted a more established relationship. In tandem with that, we strive to surprise and delight our tenants with events and amenities and then help them incorporate everything we have into what they may need in their office. And then I handle all holiday things, which is huge amenity as well.

Harwood around the holidays shines! You are involved with all the decor?

This will be my fourth year running the holiday program in Harwood and every year we do something a little bit different.

It’s so fun to make these plans and see them come to life. It takes months!

Months?!

Oh yeah. First, we establish what we want to do with the District and then get a few bids for the project. Lights started going up in September - you don’t realize how large the District truly is until you are counting light strands. This year will be even more special as we have two new buildings - Harwood No. 10 and Citymark to incorporate. So it's a lot, but it's really pretty.

So what does a typical day look like for you?

(Rachel laughs) Is there a typical day?

There is not a typical day. As much as I like structure, I like how I get to wear many hats throughout the day. I get to work and connect with so many departments and personalities. Today, for instance, I got an email from a property manager with an idea about beehives so we are exploring that. And then I meet with a few of the tenants one-on-one each week just to check-in and see how things are going. This week I’m also building out our next tenant questionnaire - this goes out to all our tenants and helps me know what amenities to focus on and help the hospitality team know what tenants are interested in.

Tell me a bit about your job. What does a typical day look like for you?

Really there's no typical day. It’s just a mix of different things.

I mean, the word concierge meaning simply that you know we're here for service. We accommodate the needs of the tenants and those that are here visiting. We make sure they know what’s available for them with Harwood.

It’s concierge, but there’s that other word behind it - security.

We really are security for the district as well. And so we have kind of a twofold title.

What is your background in? How did you get started at Harwood?

My background is in law enforcement. I kind of semi-retired for a while and then decided I wanted to get back into something that I'm familiar with. This lead me right to Harwood and I've been here ever since.

What is your favorite part about working for Harwood?

I love working with Harwood, it’s a great company. It provides a lot of opportunity and advancement. They treat their employees above and beyond. And in turn, we want to do right by Harwood. In the concierge security department, we have a saying: Lead Train Achieve. And I like to add to that, by simply saying ‘it's what we do.’

Describe yourself in 3 words.

Honest, professional, and funny. I know a lot of people look at me and are like, "No I don't think so." But, I have what would be more considered to be a drier sense of humor. So, they just got to get to know me, you know.

And do you have a favorite place around the district?

Saint Ann is my favorite, the food is really great. I used to work right above it in The Samurai Collection and ate there way too much!

Do you have a favorite spot around the Harwood District?

Oh, that’s tough - I love all of them depending on my mood! I think Mercat is probably my favorite - we office above and I feel like I know that team so well. But then I love the atmosphere at Dolce Riviera and can’t get enough of the food at Te Deseo!

WHAT'S NEW AT TE DESEO With Bon Appetit naming Dallas the 2019 Restaurant City of the Year, the spotlight is shining bright on the Dallas restaurant scene. Discerning diners crave it all -- delicious food, strong cocktails, photo-worthy environments, and a memorable experience that piques curiosity and wonder.

Since its highly anticipated opening in August, Te Deseo quickly became one of the city's top drinking and dining destinations. The Dallas Morning News describes Te Deseo as a “stunner on the outside…[and] on the inside too.” “It doesn’t even look like you’re in Dallas anymore,” wrote Paper City. THE DEFINED DISH BRINGS HOME COOKING TO SKY-RISE Alex Snodgrass of The Defined Dish (@thedefineddish) is collaborating with Bleu Ciel this season. Follow along on Instagram as she experiences Dallas' best Sky-Rise for the latest on her experience in resort-style living.

How are you and your family liking Bleu Ciel?

We absolutely love it. The girls love the greeting from the concierge team when they come home - they feel like celebrities living this Eloise-style life. We had just visited New York City and read Eloise at the Plaza before moving in, so they basically think we are in Manhattan now.

And the pups?

Salsa is just loving the Katy Trail. The direct access can't be beat! And they're getting used to seeing so many other dogs on the Trail and in the building. It's all so exciting for them.

How are you liking the amenities?

Right when we moved in the weather was still warm, so we were also able to use the pool quite a bit and that's definitely been super fun. Now we hot tub every once in a while. Clayton has been loving the spa as well; I think he goes down there almost everyday.

What's the best part of living closer to Dallas?

We are able to decide last minute, "Hey, let's go out to dinner!" Whereas before we would have to drive a while. Now everything is so much closer.

We're able to explore areas and try new restaurants that we'd always wanted to. We tried out Te Deseo the other night and it was unlike anything we've ever experienced in the city!

What will you miss the most after leaving Bleu Ciel?

The people in the lobby! They're so warm and friendly! And also the views - the girls love seeing the colors of the buildings.

3 DAYS. 2 FLOORS. 1 GAME. AND OVER 6,000 FOOTBALL FANS AT HAPPIEST HOUR.

The biggest rivalry game of the year deserved more than just 4 hours of game watching attention so we decided to ramp it up to three days of celebration. We kicked off TX OU weekend the best way football fans know how - tailgating. Fans from all over Texas and Oklahoma drove miles to Happiest Hour to start their celebration as early as possible.

Even though the pre-party lasted all night, TX OU devoted fans were up and ready to watch the annual Red River Rivalry game right when our doors opened Saturday morning at 9 a.m. Both floors of Happiest Hour were flooded by a sea of orange and red as fans devoured our Team Happytizers and large scale drinks while cheering on their team on over 30 tvs and one giant jumbo tron. Not to mention fans were treated to an amazing musical line-up of three djs and four live bands which played throughout the weekend, so if you weren't honed in on the game you had plenty of other entertainment to distract you from the score board. It is safe to say that every single angle of both the game and Happiest Hour was covered with anything you could possibly need.

Who ever said all good things must come to an end clearly has never spent a Rivalry Weekend at Harwood’s favorite sports bar. After the last whistle was blown and OU took home bragging rights, Happiest Hour got everyone together to host a recovery brunch. They couldn’t leave things on uneasy terms so they made sure to serve up all the brunch favorites including their special Manmosas and the Struggle Bus. It was a weekend filled with fans, food, and over 98,000 ounces of beer. In the end, it didn’t matter whether you were celebrating your win or defending your loss - everyone could agree that Happiest Hour was the place to be to watch the game.

Bleu Ciel features a new pair of Model Homes, each a unique and carefully curated take by Dallas-based designers - Art of Living MODERN and William D. Scott.

Art of Living MODERN was selected to furnish one of the two featured homes. Complete furnishings make the place come alive, allowing you a sneak peek at the full potential of your own Bleu Ciel residence.

Owner and founder, Cheryl Parsa, desires to create spaces that are warm, inviting, but also make you feel like a better version of yourself. When consulting with a new client, instead of asking about their style and color preferences, Parsa digs deeper to ask who they are and what they want to feel.

Art of Living MODERN’s philosophy of “conscious simplicity and sophistication” is beautifully conveyed in this 2,728 square foot model home at Bleu Ciel. According to the designer, “layering different hues of the same shade to provide sophisticated contrast while keeping an understated feel.”

Contemporary shapes, intricate details, and velvety textures beckon a visitor’s attention giving each room memorable character.
