Welcome From The Director Dear colleagues, friends, students and visitors, My name is James Robson, the James C. Kralik and Yunli Lou Professor of East Asian Languages and Civilizations and the Victor and William Fung Director of the Harvard University Asia Center. Normally at this time of year the Asia Center would be welcoming all of our visiting scholars, fellows, and associates in person. These are, however, anything but normal times. With the depopulation of the Harvard University campus in March, everyone’s lives have been impacted in significant ways. In the face of all of these challenges, however, the Asia Center remains committed to facilitating the cross-cultural study of Asia at Harvard University. Our programs have traditionally aimed to foster research and bring people together to discuss the interconnected histories of the region and the significant issues facing Asia today. Although we are unable to bring people together in person, we have transitioned to offering an array of new virtual initiatives that we invite you to explore on the Asia Center website. Despite the challenges this year, we see this moment as one that also presents certain opportunities. Rather than merely react to the new realities of the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on the mission of the Asia Center, we are exploring ways to innovate and expand the Asia Center’s connections to the wider world through our online programming. The Asia Center continues to have close collaborative relationships with other Harvard Asiarelated institutes focused on a single country or region in Asia, including the Fairbank Center for Continues on next page

Welcome From The Director

Chinese Studies; the Reischauer Institute of Japanese Studies; the Korea Institute; the Lakshmi Mittal and Family South Asia Institute; East Asian Legal Studies; and the Weatherhead Center’s Program on U.S.-Japan Relations. We look forward to working together with all the Asia-related centers to organize and co-sponsor conferences, seminars, and workshops, and we welcome all our visitors to attend and participate in these events (even if they are necessarily virtual events at this time). In order to better understand the mission and accomplishments of the Asia Center, please visit https://asiacenter.harvard.edu, where you will find resources for staying informed of the Asia Center’s activities, programs, and opportunities. You can also subscribe to the weekly Asia Bulletin and the Asia Center This Week newsletter via the homepage. We wish everyone a productive 2020-2021. With all best wishes,

James Robson Victor and William Fung Director, Harvard University Asia Center James C. Kralik and Yunli Lou Professor of East Asian Languages and Civilizations, Harvard University
