Hartselle students earn spots in All-State Band

In recent district band auditions, three students in Hartselle demonstrated exceptional musical abilities, earning placements in esteemed ensembles. Elijah Gosnell, an 8th grader, Josie Rhone and Benjamin Marin, both sophomores, have each achieved recognition for their dedication and skill in their respective instruments.

Gosnell has secured a position in the Junior High White Band, showcasing proficiency in the French Horn. Rhone has attained the third chair in the High School White Band, demonstrating excellence in flute and piccolo performance Marin has achieved first chair in the district’s premier ensemble, the Red Band, for the second consecutive year, displaying exceptional talent in percussion.

The audition process for the All-State Bands is rigorous and demanding, according to Hartselle High School band director Randall Key.

“Wind instruments undergo a demanding audition procedure, which entails mastering 12 major scales, two minor scales and the chromatic scale. Successful completion of these scales grants students the opportunity to audition with two etudes—one technical

Hartselle students chosen to attend Girls State

Two Hartselle students will represent the school at Troy University this summer at the 82nd American Legion Auxiliary Girls State.

Mary Frances Itsede and Katie Sloan, both rising seniors at Hartselle High School, will participate in the week-long, fun-filled, hands-on learning opportunity for some of the best and brightest young women in the State of Alabama.

Girls State is sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) and is a premier youth leader-

ship program which offers a one-of-a-kind experience to its delegates.

The 2024 Session of ALA Alabama Girls State will take place June 2-7 at Troy.

During the American Legion Auxiliary Alabama Girls State program, delegates will have the opportunity to learn about local and state government through a variety of speakers, workshops and sessions.

High school students who have completed their junior year are competitively selected and sponsored by American Legion Auxiliary units for this program, where they learn

about the political process by electing officials for all levels of state government and actively running a mock government. The participants are assigned to mock cities and either the “Federalist Party” or “Nationalist Party.”

Assistance from dedicated ALA volunteers ensures the program’s nonpartisan governmental, patriotic and civic objectives are carried out through interactive learning Though the week is filled with many learning opportunities, there is always time for fun and the formation of longterm friendships.

and the other lyrical—followed by a sight-reading segment,” Key said. “Percussion instrument auditionees must also tackle the same scale requirements as wind instruments on a mallet instrument, in addition to performing an etude and sight-reading Moreover, they must demonstrate proficiency in rudiments on the snare drum and exhibit timpani tuning skills, alongside an etude and sight-reading Those chosen

for All-State will audition again for chair placement within their respective bands through another audition process. Key said participation in the All-State Bands offers students opportunities for recognition and advancement in their musical pursuits Colleges and universities often seek out participants, offering scholarships as acknowledgment of their talent and dedication.

New categories in this year’s Biggest Catch competition

Special to the Enquirer

The Alabama 4-H BIGGEST Catch contest is back for another year with some new competition categories.

Emily Nichols, an Alabama Cooperative Extension System 4-H natural resources specialist, said she is excited to add new components to this year’s competition.

“This is our fifth year to offer this contest, and there is more that we want youth and their families to discover,” Nichols said. “I’m thrilled to incorporate new categories that encourage young people to explore as many public water bodies as possible and gain exposure and familiarity with as many different fish as possible. I want people to get to know the special aquatic resources that we have in our state.

This fishing and fish art competition is May 24 through June 3 All Ala-

bama youth ages 9 to 18 are invited to participate There is no prior 4-H experience required to join in on the fun. Contest categories Unlike traditional fishing competitions, the 4-H BIGGEST Catch is completely virtual. This year, there are four main categories: Big ge st Catch, Biggest Variety of Fish Species, Biggest Variety of Public Water and Biggest Fish Art. In the Biggest Catch category, the name says it all. The goal is to reel in the biggest fish in one or more fish categories. These include bass, sunfish (bream), catfish and crappie.

In the Biggest Variety of Fish Species competition, size is not the objective. Participants are out to catch as many different species of bass, catfish, crappie and sunfish (bream) as they can.

One of the new categories this year is the Biggest Va rie ty of Public Water This encourages participants to catch a fish in as many public water bodies as possible. This new addition pushes youth to experience the wonderful fishing resources in their area and beyond.

“Because this contest allows kids to choose where they go fishing, it is a great opportunity

to explore fishing across the state,” Nichols said. “Whether that is in statemanaged public fishing lakes, state parks, rivers or creeks, this part of the contest helps kids learn more about different bodies of water.”

The Biggest Fish Art is another new category, which encourages youth to let their inner artist shine Whether it is through drawing, sketching or painting, the goal is to portray a bass, catfish, crappie or sunfish (bream) species that is listed on the 4-H BIGGEST Catch web page.

Fishing Contest rules

To enter the three fishing categories, participants must catch a fish in Alabama waters between May 24 and June 3. To be eligible, contestants must catch and land their fish without any help. After making the catch, contes-

tants must include a photograph of the fish along with the submission.

“The photograph must include the kid and their fish, the contest code AL4H24 and the total length (inches) of the fish,” Nichols said. “Participants can write this information on a piece of paper and hold it up in the photograph or they can write it on their hand.”

Submit contest entries online at aub.

ie/4HBig ge st Catch24. This portal opens May 24 at 8 a.m. and closes June 3 at 8 p.m.

Fish Art Contest rules

Participants in the fish art contest must also submit entries between May 24 at 8 a.m. and June 3 at 8 p.m. Each entry must include a picture of the youth’s drawing, sketch or painting This artwork must be done without the help of others.

“For this contest, we want the kids to portray one of the fish species that is listed under our official contest categories, which are bass, catfish, crappie and sunfish (bream),” Nichols said. “We can’t wait to see the beautiful artwork that the participants come up with this year.”

There is a separate online submission link for the fish art contest. Submit contest entries at aub. ie/4HBiggestCatchArt.

lem or something to do with baseball. One of his favorite sayings was thatthe ‘cream always rises to the top.

Theirony of Booth’s death during the statebaseball championship week is not lostonthose who knewhim.

“This week is whathe looked forwardtoevery year,” former longtime Hartselle assistant coach JerryChilders said. “It breaks my heart that he won’t be with his team.”

“I know he was so proud of this team,”Hartselle coach JakeMiles said. “Hewould tell them to playashard

as you can, always compete and never give up. ”

MasonBoothhad made planstotakehis father to Jacksonville this past week to watchthe Tigers playin the championship series

“I know that he wouldnot wantanybody to feel sorry for him,”Mason said.“He would want them to go support his baseball team.”

Thestoryof howBoothgot theopportunitytobecome abaseballcoaching legend is almostasamazingashis program’ssuccess

During hisdaysasa high school student,Booth stood just5-foot-4 and didn’t playany sports. When he returned as ateacher he had grown to 6-foot-1. Basket-

ball was his firstlove. He along with other faculty members wouldmeetfor nightsofpick-up games at school.

“Mydad could actually dunk abasketball,”Mason Booth said.

Baseball gotBooth’sinterestin1988 when Hartselle was looking for anew leader for its program. Booth had an interestbecause Mason andhis friends had recently won twoyouth baseball statechampionships with his father serving as head coach.

It was Hartselle principal J.P. Cain who convinced Booth to be the next baseball coach.

“I said Iwould tryitfor two years,” Booth said in 2022. “I wanted away to getout, if it didn’t work. But Iknew it would workout. There

was justtoo much talent for us nottobegood. When we went27-4inour second season,Iwas hooked.”

ThelateClif Knight covered everyhappening in Hartselle formanyyears with theHartselle Enquirer He was therewhen Booth’s classroom expanded to includethe baseball field. In 2022 when Boothwas inducted into the Morgan CountySports Hall of Fame, he shared his memories.

“CoachBoothwas already well established as amath teacher,” Knight said. “When he took over thebaseball program, Idon’t think anyonedoubted he would be a success.

“It’sjustthatnoone could see far enough down the road to see justhow successfulthe baseball program would become. He’s always

been ahead of the curve when it comes to coaching baseball in Alabama.”

Booth’s coaching method wasmuchlikehis math teaching method. It was practice, practice, practice untilthe problem canbe solved correctlyeverytime.

It’s the same method for an algebraproblem and a groundball to an infielder Practiceuntil you can just about do it in your sleep.

It can be demanding and time-consuming,but the successspeaks for itself

“CoachBooth reallydeveloped the‘processfor success’long beforeCoach (Nick) Saban ever came to Alabama,”Knight said. “It starts with theyouth camps. He can measuretalent in kids when they areyoung

Theprogram’s success has

attracted alot of talent. He’s rode agood horse for along time.”

Booth’s firstteam in 1988 went 23-10but missed the playoffs. Only one team from eachareaadvancedto the playoffs in those days. Four losses to Athensthat season denied theTigers a playoffberth

Thenextyear theTigers made their firstplayoff appearanceunder Booth with a27-3recordbut lostin thefirstround to Haleyville.

“A week earlier, wehad beatGrissom, thedefending 6A statechampions,”Mason Booth said. “Wewerecocky going to Haleyville andgot beat8-3. That’s when the first-roundplayoffswere justone game.

“Thatlossmotivated us for thenextyear, and we won our firststate championship. That’s whatgot it started.”

Between 1990 and 2000, Hartselle won six state championships and finished second twice. After the2013 statechampionship, there was an eight-year streak of no appearances in thestate championship round.

In 2000, Booth added JerryChilders to his coaching staff. Childers had been thehead coachatBrewer for six years.

“Coachtold me that he thought he had maybe three moreyears in him to coach and wanted me to be there to replacehim,”Childers said. “Twentyyears later,I retired and he was still going strong.”

Hartselle’s 2022 state championship team was one of its mostdominant teams.

TheTigers swept through all five playoffrounds without aloss.

Thepushfor excellencehas seta standardfor Hartselle CitySchools in athletics and academics. BeforeBooth’s baseball program won its firststate championshipin 1990, Hartselle hadthree statechampionships. They werefromboys basketball in 1971 and girlsbasketball in 1984and 1985

Sincethe baseball program’s firstthree state championships, Hartselle haswon 15 otherstate championships in seven sports.

“People used to call Hartselle afootball town or maybeeven abasketball town,”Knight said. “Coach Booth changed thatwith baseball. Hartselle is now known as asports town that loves to win statechampionships.”

LeeHall played on Hartselle’s 1999 statechampionshipteam. He hasbeen aHartselle baseball assistant coachfor 19 years.

“Coachwas asuper motivator.Hejustwanted the bestversion of youeach day,”Hall said.

“Hetaught alot of people how to work hard.”

Thehardworkproduced a lot of baseball playerswho moved on to playincollegeand even on theprofessional level. Thehardwork alsoworkedinacademics with Hartselle producing wave after wave of young engineers.

“Dad was ahead of his time in pushing students to go into STEM programs,” MasonBooth said.“He reallyencouragedfemales to enter thedifferent fields.Theyweresuccessful because he prepared them well.”

Alot of those engineers returned to settle in Hartselle, whichhas now lostone of its top
