StudentsandteachersatCrestline ElementarySchoolwillfinishthe 2023-24academicyearinabrandnewbuilding.

Thefirstofficialdayinthenewly completedschoolbuildingwasMay 8.

The$36milliondollarprojectthat beganinOctober2022wascompletedjustaweekbeforebyBaileyHarris Construction.

Thenewschoolfeaturesroomto growwith65classroomsincluding apre-Kwing,alargersensoryroom andastormshelter.Itislocated besideCrestline’sexistingbuilding at600CrestlineDriveS.W.,onthe property’ssouthside.

CrestlineElementaryPrincipal KarissaLangsaidbetween725-750 studentsfrompre-kindergarten throughfourthgradeareexpectedto enrollthisfallatthe105,000-squarefootschool,whichhasamaximum capacityof1,000students.Theformerschoolis75,000squarefeet with41classroomsandwasnearing capacitywith600students.

SeveralagencieswereoutsideofHartselleonFriday afternoonrecoveringthe bodyofamantheMorgan CountySheriff’sOfficesaid waskilledinaplanecrash behindahouseafterflying outoftheHartselle-Morgan CountyRegionalAirport.

MorganCountyCoroner JeffChunnonFridayafternoonsaidthevictimwas 75-year-oldDouglasChapmanofDecatur. AccordingtotheSheriff’s Office,thecrashoccurred behindahouseattheend ofBeardRoad,locatedwest oftheairport.Chunnsaid thecrashoccurredabout300 feetintothewoodsbehind thehouse. ChunnsaidChapmanwas

greenpowerscars,additionalSTEM roomforcoding,andanewoutdoor classroomthatwillaccommodateour growingstudentpopulation,”Lang said.

“Theteacherslovetheirroomswith allthenewfurnitureandofcourse everyonelovestheexpansivecafeteria,beautifullibraryandawesome gym.”

Thenewbuildingwillconsolidate existing,overcrowdedpre-KprogramsatBarkleyBridgeElementary andF.E.BurlesonElementary.Lang saidteachersfromthoseprograms willalsomovetoCrestline.

HartselleCitySchoolspre-KPrincipalDenaMayfieldsaidhavingall pre-Kprogramsinoneschoolwill presentgreateropportunitiesfor collaborationamongstaff.Shesaid pre-KenrollmentinHartselle’sthree elementaryschoolstotals162students,butsheanticipatesanadditional20studentswillbythisfall.

Langsaidthepre-Kwingconsistsof 10classrooms,800squarefeeteach, andthey’llhave18studentsineach ofthem.

Langsaidthecarlineforthepre-K wingwillbeseparatedfromthemain carline,somethingshehopeswillcut

theonlyfatalityandtheonly individualontheplane.

MorganCountySheriff’s OfficespokespersonMike Swaffordsaiddeputies werenotifiedofthecrashat approximately9:10a.m.and thecrashhappenedshortly beforethat.Hesaidthepilot waspronounceddeadatthe scene.

Chunnwasonscenewith airportdirectorStoney Powellandanotherairport employee.HesaidtheFederalAviationAdministration andtheNationalTransportationSafetyBoard,who werealsoonsceneFriday, areinvestigatingthecrash.

downontrafficinfrontoftheschool. “Wearestillnotdoingdropoffin themorningslikeitwillbeinthefall. Aparkingloopandadditionalparkinglotforpre-Kandtigerteamswill beconstructedoncetheoldschool isdemolished,”shesaid.“Whenthis iscomplete,thiswillallowbusesto dropoffinthefront,pre-Kandtide studentstoenterthroughtheside entrancewiththeirownareaand dropoffforkindergartenthrough fourthgradestudentsintheback.We arecurrentlyutilizingthebackroad fordropoffanditisgreat,allowing morecarsinatonetime. A Somerville man was arrested during a traffic stop May 7 and charged with trafficking fentanyl, according to the Priceville Police Department.

The city of Hartselle is on track to collect $325,000 to $350,000 more in revenue than it had budgeted for this fiscal year based on midyear numbers, according to Mayor Randy Garrison.

The roughly 1% surplus over the fiscal year budget shows “people supporting the city and local businesses,”themayorsaid.

Garrison recently gave council members his midyear budget review reflecting how much of the individual departmental budgets like police, fire and publicworkshadbeenspent midway through the fiscal year, which began Oct. 1 andendsSept.30.Garrison said that midyear expenditures have been 45.4% of the budgeted expenditures forthefullyear.

“This is not unusual,” Garrison said of the projected surplus,whichwillbeputin thegeneralfund.“Normally, the last few years we’ve had larger sales tax increases. We try to budget reasonably.Wedon’tdopie-in-thesky budgeting. We try to be very fiscally responsible

Priceville police said they stopped Alexander’s vehicle during a routine neighborhood patrol near East Upper River Road and Olde Dogwood Trail for a minor traffic violation at around 4:30 a.m. Court records show Alexander was charged with trafficking meth and trafficking fentanyl last year in Madison County. Those charges are currently pending consideration by a Madison County grand jury.

“We appreciate our folks supporting our local businesses, and I try to let people know how much I appreciate that,” the mayor said. “We’ve been able to do a lot of things in the past few years that we were not able to do before because of morerevenue.”

This includes replacing equipment in all departments in the past eight years, obtaining new police cars, ordering a third fire engine and buying vehicles for the Public Works Department,hesaid.

The COVID-19 epidemic also increased local revenue because more people were working from home and thus shopping locally, he said.

Thompson said he would like to see the additional money spent on the projects already in the planning stages: the new library or theneweventcenter.

“Maybe the leftover can be put on those two projects,” hesaid.

Hartselle students hold Good Character expo

Hartselle Junior High seventh graders came together this past week for a #GoodCharacters Expo to share powerful service projects with community members, mentors and peers.

After weeks in the American Character Program, learning about historical figures who transformed America, they were then challenged to begin transforming things themselves.

Speaking from their booths, students shared how they formed groups, identified problems, worked with local mentors and began taking action. In addition to civics and character learned in the program’s curriculum, they gained real-world practice in collaboration, service, empathy, compassion and communication.

“ItwasaproudmomentfortheLibertyLearning team as we saw first-hand how our third and fifth grade programs had paved the way for these middle schoolers to take ownership in their roles as citizens. Their ideas, ingenuity and determination showed us America’s future is in good hands,” Tricia Bobo said.

The immersive educational experience is made possible because generous local and state sponsors understand that these lessons must be taught despite time and budget constraints, she added.

Students use practical life skills at Morgan County 4-H competition

The sizzling of a prime rib steak on a cast iron skillet could be heard as Eva Elementary student Mason Walker flipped, seared and grilledittomedium-rareperfection, repeating a family tradition handed down from hisfatheratthe2024Morgan County 4H Round Up competitionheldMay1.

Walker was one of 150 studentsinMorganCountywho registered to compete in the competitionattheSparkman Civic Center in Hartselle, with20differenteventsranging from photography and interior design to culinary arts, woodworking and gardening.

Students competing in the chefeventhadtoprepareand cooktheirdishin15minutes orlessinfrontoftwojudges: Morgan County 4-H Agent Assistant Kathleen Woodside and Amy Shelton with the Morgan County Soil and WaterConservationDistrict.

“You’ve got one minute and 11 seconds left, do you want to go ahead and start slicing itup?”SheltonaskedWalker as he placed his steak onto a plate.

“I’m letting it rest,” replied Walker,afifth-gradestudent.

Walker seasoned his steak with garlic and pepper and saidheandhisfatherusually grillbeefontheirsmoker,but he prefers using a skillet. He is looking into the culinary fieldasafuturecareeroption.

“I can control the meat more on a cast iron than I can with a smoker,” Walker said.

In the next room, several students were competing in a bake-off where they made cupcakes, brownies

and intricate-looking cakes. They prepared two different bakedgoodsapieceandwere requiredtoprinttheirrecipes andnutritionalinformation.

The students had to bake their goods according to a theme and this year’s theme was carnival foods. Some of them were influenced by family recipes handed down fromgenerationspast.

Eva fifth grade student McKenzie Bailey baked popcorn cupcakes with mini marshmallows resembling popcorn.

“This was my great-grandmother’s recipe before she passed away,” Bailey said. “Thesecretisjustonecupof sprinkles.”

Bailey also baked a chocolatechipcookiecakeshesaid she made from her mother’s recipe.

“We love baking these for birthdays,butit’susuallybigger,” Bailey said. “My secret ingredient for that is one freshfarmegg.”

James Harton, a fourthgrade student at F.E. Burleson Elementary School, baked some fudge brownies and banana bread cupcakes. He used butter, chocolate, sugar, milk, vanilla and salt tomaketheicingonthecupcakes.

“That was my great-grandmother Dykstra’s recipe,” Hartonsaidofthecupcakes.

In the interior design competition, students had to design a fictional room of their choosing. Crestline Elementary fourth graders Ellie Houser and Rowe Swafford designedababy’snurseryand postedimagesoftheirideaon acardboardcutout.

“It’s for a baby girl’s nursery, so we went with pink,” Housersaid.

Gardeners excited for first hydrangea blooms in two years

All across Alabama, gardeners are eagerlywaitingtoseehydrangeasin full bloom. This year’s bloom will be something that gardeners have not witnessed in a few years. MalloryKelley,anAlabamaCooperative Extension System home grounds regionalagent,saidithasbeentwo years since the old southern varieties of Hydrangea macrophylla have bloomed with their pink, blue and even purple shades of color. However,thesecolorswillsoonreturnto Alabamalandscapes.

“IntheSouth,twoyearscanseem like an eternity for this southern landscape favorite,” Kelley said. “LastMarch,rightbeforewewould haveseentinyflowersstarttoform, the state had a bitter blast of cold

“You could never prune hydrangeas, and they would still flower butataslowerrate,andoftentimes the blooms are much smaller,” Kelley said. “If your hydrangeas are bloomingfinethisseason,youmay wonder why pruning is necessary.

“If you wait until winter when theyaredormant,youwillbepruning away the buds,” Kelley said. “This removes where the flowers wouldbloomthenextspring.”

“Sometimes, hydrangeas can get some winter damage to tissue that did not have a chance to harden off before winter temperatures arrived,”Kelleysaid.“Youwillneed toremovethistissueaswell.”

After pruning all the dead material, mophead and oakleaf hydrangeas require no further mainte-

plasma. Each eruption — known as a coronal mass ejection — can contain billions of tons of plasma and magnetic field from the sun’s outer atmosphere, or corona.

Theflaresseemtobeassociated with a sunspot that’s 16 times the diameter of Earth,accordingtoNOAA. It’s all part of the solar activity that’s ramping up as the sun approaches the

nanceuntiltheyfinishfloweringin early summer. Then, prune them back to a manageable size at the branch junctions or simply clip off thespentbloomafewinchesbelow it.Ifgardenersspotanewforming bud while pruning, make sure to clipjustabovethisbloom.

“It isn’t likely that you will make a huge mistake when pruning hydrangeas,” Kelley said. “Don’t be afraidtoprunebecauseitwillstimulatenewgrowthandnewflowers.” If the hydrangea seems to be struggling,theissuemaybedeeper than pruning. The issues could be associatedwithimproperwatering, lack of cleanup at the soil level or insufficientmorningsun.

When in doubt about the right time to prune, Kelley said to rememberit’ssafetoprunehydrangeas of any variety immediately afterthebloomsarespent.

The10inducteesinclude Lorenzo“Sonny”Jackson, thefirstcompetitiveswimmereveramongtheHallof Fame’s247inductees.

“It’sagreatfeelingtobe thefirstatanything,”Jacksonsaid.

In1970,Jacksonwasthe firstBlackmantoever competeintheAlabama HighSchoolAthleticAssociationstateswimmeet.

“Thishonorisalittle sweetandsour,”Jackson said.“Alotofpeopledidn’t havetheexposuretoswimminglikeIdid.”

Saturday’sinduction includedDavidChairs,who turns93inJune.Chairsis theHallofFame’soldest everinductee.Hegoesin foracareerinbaseballasa playerandasanumpirein baseballandsoftballthat lastedover70years.
